Carterton Plumbers has been getting Wairarapa residents out of the shit for 60 years, since old-timers Brian Allen and David Skeet first established the company back in October 1964. There have been very few staff changes over the decades although, by 1970, David had moved on and Paul Garrett had come on board as Brian’s apprentice. Sadly, Brian passed away earlier this year. In 2024, Paul is still going strong in the business alongside his plumber son Ben Garrett (aka Ben the Boss) who has been on board since 1997, truck operator Glenn, apprentice and “young fella” Blake, and Ben’s wife Tash who’s in charge of admin and is the company’s showerdome guru.
Plumbing is a sector with ever-changing markets and demands, combined with constant innovation. In the midst of all that change, both Paul and Ben attribute Carterton Plumbers’ lasting nature to reliable old fashioned principles: dependable customerfocused service, versatility and willingness to help, quality materials, and with every job done with pride by highly trained and expert staff. “From Cape Palliser to Pahiatua,” Ben says, “we are Wairarapa’s go-to plumbers for rural plumbing. We do it all and it’s often urgent.”
Carterton Plumbers plan, install and service rainwater harvesting systems, septic tanks and other wastewater disposal systems, pumps, filters, pipes, and fittings. Ben says that lifestyle block owners are the company’s biggest customer segment, with farmers not far behind. “We operate in a niche market in Wairarapa,” Ben says. “We’re unique, for example, in our ability to service and look after wastewater systems. Knowing that, other plumbers even direct those jobs our way.”
