NYSID’S MISSION:
Advancing employment and other opportunities for individuals with disabilities and qualified veterans.
Dear Member Agencies and Corporate Partners: Rewarding employment helps shape our lives, create security and form relationships. It is the driving force of NYSID’s annual “Outstanding Performer” recognition program. We proudly introduce the 50 Outstanding Performers who personify NYSID’s impact in this 20th year. From 33 inaugural nominees in 2004 to more than 1,000 New Yorkers recognized over 20 years, the individual accomplishment of being named an Outstanding Performer endures. Common themes of independence, growth and pride in performance flow throughout the profiles of the distinguished NYSID Class of 2023 Outstanding Performers. Just as outstanding are the Member Agencies which have nominated deserving individuals over 20 years. Their commitment to the NYSID awards program is appreciated and recognized throughout these pages. We congratulate the 2023 Outstanding Performers and extend best wishes for their continued achievements.

Sandra Becker Liberty Arc • Amsterdam/Montgomery County Sandra (Sandy) Becker has been an employee at Liberty Enterprises for nearly 30 years. Sandy is the mother of three and grandmother of two, and has worked most of her adult life. Today she lives in her own apartment her with cat, Secret. Sandy performs a variety of jobs within production and assembly at Liberty Enterprises, with a focus on janitorial, office and GOJO/Purell offerings, as well as private contract packaging. She is a takecharge person, who works hard from the moment she arrives to work. She is methodical and provides natural support and direction to her co-workers and even her supervisor when needed. Sandy is willing to lend a helping hand at any time. She is welcoming to new employees and is a strong mentor, taking them under her wing and training them on the products. She keeps an eye on them to ensure they are not having any difficulties, to help them problem solve and to stay on pace. Sandy has worked for other employers and understands that it’s difficult to start work in a new place and that ultimately, you must love where and who you work with. A nurturer, she sits with new employees during breaks and lunches, until they feel more relaxed and part of the team. Danielle, the newest employee, shared that she feels like she is part of the “cool kids,” and is happy Sandy has been so friendly to her. Sandy is often referred to by her co-workers as “mother hen” because she looks out for others. Co-workers often rely on Sandy for personal advice because she shows that she cares for them as a person first. Along with willing to do anything to help out, Sandy enjoys taking on and mastering new jobs. She figured out how to program scales in the razor department, replace packing tape on the case sealer, and troubleshoot quality control concerns that may surface. There isn’t a job she can’t handle. Many people refer to Sandy as a work horse: she would work until after hours if she was allowed to. Sandy does not call out sick, and reports to the production floor on time, if not early, and ready to work. Four of Sandy’s co-workers requested that she be recognized for her great work ethic, her amazing attitude and her incredible personality. Her personal growth goal is to improve her memory skills, but from Liberty Arc’s perspective she is perfect.
My dream job would be…
...staying with Liberty Enterprises and retiring.

Kevin Brown Janitronics, Inc. • Albany/Albany County Kevin is small in stature, but has a big heart, big winning personality, and big devotion to his job and fellow employees. He is also a big asset to the Janitronics team at the O.D. Heck Office for People With Developmental Disabilities work site. Kevin was born with a physical disability of his right hand, having to learn to do a lot of things with his left hand. Other students bullied him for this obvious disability. He struggled academically and felt teachers pushed him along without appropriate services. He consequently dropped out of school without graduating. Kevin’s life spiraled after leaving school, as he became, and was addicted to crack for decades. He was evicted from several places and became homeless, committing crimes to feed his addiction. Depressed, he was hospitalized for his mental health as well. Nearly 40 years later, he chose to get clean, thanks to his faith in God and the love of his children. The City Mission in Schenectady welcomed Kevin into its program, allowing him to meet others who shared similar choices and experiences to his. Kevin met a woman he said was like a mother to him. Although this friend recently passed away, he is grateful for the time they spent together. This relationship helped him to realize how much he enjoyed helping others in need. Getting clean led Kevin to the next positive step: employment at Janitronics on NYSID contracts. He has been successfully employed part-time for more than two years. Kevin loves the work and his supervisor, Mike. He feels that Mike supports him every day and is a positive role model. Kevin looks forward to going to work and seeing his co-workers who are like a family to him. “I feel with my hard work, I make the environment clean and pleasant, which is important,” he shared. Kevin has come a long way from bullying and homelessness, to a place of stability and respect. “I had some unfortunate things happen to me, but they have made me stronger. They have made me realize what is important in this life,” he said. He feels that faith in God, loving his family and working hard are all important. He hopes for his children to realize the importance of these things, especially working hard to make a good life. He also hopes that in sharing his story, it will give others inspiration to realize it is never too late to turn your life around.
If I didn’t have this job… ...I would be homeless. If not for this job, I would not be able to focus on living a healthy lifestyle and I would probably be broken down.

Lenny Campbell The Arc Erie County New York • Williamsville/Erie County Life is full of twists and turns, and this rang true for Lenny Campbell who experienced his fair share of challenging turns and personal battles to overcome. Lenny was referred to The Arc Erie County New York through a partnership with Buffalo Treatment Courts in 2019. He began as a contract cleaner and was taking the right path for recovery. Lenny showed he was dedicated to his work and provided high-quality cleaning standards for customers. Soon after starting the job, life unfortunately twisted again, and Lenny had to face another personal conflict. However, not long after his fight for recovery, he came back to his supervisor asking for another chance. Management supervised him closely and soon realized Lenny’s full potential. He showed the same determination as he had before and was eager to learn more. He was assigned to various work sites, and was introduced to other janitorial work assignments, with a focus on floor and carpet care. Management identified Lenny as someone with an outstanding work ethic. He listened and retained the training provided to him and put his new skills to work quickly and efficiently. Pamela LaMancuso from Buffalo Treatment Courts stated, “We are proud of the accomplishments Lenny has made for not only himself, but for his family. Lenny has found the right ‘people,’ in the right ‘places’ to do the right ‘things’ and we know he will continue to succeed.” With the trust of management came more opportunities for Lenny. In the Spring of 2022, he was promoted to contract crew chief, overseeing the mobile crews. Lenny, along with a contract cleaner, would maintain assigned sites. During quality checks, customers raved over his superior skills and their satisfaction with The Arc Erie’s services. Lenny has since been promoted and oversees all specialty care janitorial services, providing quality care to his assigned sites. He trains new staff and has the patience and diligence to complete any job given to him. He takes great pride in his sites and ensures that customers’ expectations are met. When Lenny is needed, he answers the call. His growth and maturity over the past couple of years has been nothing but extraordinary. Lenny’s accomplishments and continued path to success are to be congratulated.

Pam Carlson Rehabilitation Support Services • Altamont/Albany County Over the past nine years, Pam has worked at Hudson Valley Community College’s Smart Tech campus, doing a wonderful job keeping the facility clean, tidy and sanitized. Not only is Pam reliable, she is personable and has a great rapport with both the students and the faculty at the school. Pam keeps the inside building spotless, but is also responsible for outdoor seasonal tasks such as mowing grass and clearing snow from the sidewalks, which could be a thankless task in the harsh upstate New York winters. Whatever she does, Pam takes on all the various facets of her job with a great spirit and a willingness to make a difference. The Dean of the school has repeatedly sung her praises telling Rehabilitation Support Services (RSS) what an asset she is to the team. Pam is invested in where she works. As an example, the school holds various charitable events throughout the year, including a 5k run. Pam took the initiative to post signs about the event throughout the campus, and even hung signs along the roadway to the school, hoping to increase participation in the run. A positive attitude and flexibility set Pam apart. When needed to cover for her co-workers at different job sites, she does so willingly, whether it’s the train station in Saratoga or Adirondack Community College in Wilton, or anywhere else she is asked to go. She easily finds the location and gets the job done, often providing suggestions for process improvements and better efficiency. In her downtime, Pam likes to go camping with her family and enjoys traveling to Maine’s seacoast on vacation. Providing for her family is the motivating force behind her diligent work ethic. Pam stated that one of the reasons she likes working for RSS is because she feels appreciated. The many ways she lifts the spirits of those around her is why the RSS organization and its customers value Pam.

Don Caza Mountain Lake Services • Port Henry/Essex County At a recent Essex Industries team meeting, the atmosphere was heavy with concern over increasing orders challenged by increasing staffing needs. Sitting quietly among the group, listening intently, Don Caza spoke: “People need to step up. That’s all there is to it. We have to do the job.” Don’s words have always been taken to heart by everyone at the production facility. With 37 years of work clocked in at Essex Industries, working in most areas of the plant, Don’s mandate becomes gospel. Operations Manager Michael Bigelow states that Don, in many ways, has taken on an informal supervisory and morale-boosting role in the Molder Room. Mike adds, “Don also loves the camera. Whenever there are photos to be taken of employees of the month or special work achievements, you may just spot Don in the picture congratulating that person. In Don’s case, he really is happy for the person singled out and wants to add to the congratulatory spirit by being there.” Plant Manager Preston Mitchell speaks of Don’s careful, precise work. “With some of our employees, as they age, the quality of work sometimes begins to slip. Not with Don. He is one of our finest quality control employees here.” There is also this common feeling among the managers that Don is always ready to jump in and help out. Senior Foreman of the Molder Room, Doug Bishop, finds Don to be indispensable. Currently working the chop saw for picnic table assembly, Don knows every machine in that room, is a diligent worker, and takes a lead role in making sure the job is done, and done right. On the home front, Don moved to the Birchwood House in Ticonderoga in January 2023. Having lived most of his life with the agency in Elizabethtown and Westport, Don has found himself in a new environment with some new roommates he is still getting to know. Assistant House Manager Jodi Connors describes Don’s recreational interests as “enjoying fishing and basketball. Don has been to a hockey game, wrestling match, and most recently, a fishing tournament.” Jodi states that he is also an avid shopper. Community connections and involvement will continue to be a work in progress in his new environment. Steady and sure-handed, meticulous and careful, confident and supportive; all of these attributes describe Don Caza. Don has become one of those veteran workers who people seek out and rely on. Beginning employment at Essex Industries at the age of 20, Don’s quiet, even-tempered ways have been a source of stability in a world where solid and Being nominated for dependable employees are in high demand. Donald Christensen The Arc Ontario • Canandaigua/Ontario County Don’s employment success began 15 years ago when he was hired as a custodian for Spot On Cleaning Company, the Arc Ontario’s cleaning business. From the outset, he displayed a remarkable eagerness to learn, and excelled in various aspects of cleaning, including carpet cleaning, waxing and stripping floors. Don’s dedication and expertise led him to undertake project work on all contracts requiring waxing and stripping, often during after-hours. He also willingly trained his co-workers in these techniques, further enhancing the capabilities of the team. Don’s contributions extend beyond his technical skills. He serves as a role model for the custodial team, who look up to him for guidance. His unwavering commitment to excellence has played a pivotal role in maintaining the high standards that ensure customer satisfaction. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, he took on the responsibility of a crew chief for Spot On’s Geneva crew, where he remains to this day. Despite the increased responsibilities, Don continues to undertake project work, showcasing his versatility and dedication. Not only is Don highly skilled, but he is also characterized by his mild-mannered demeanor. He consistently displays a strong work ethic and willingly assists others whenever the need arises, particularly during times when crews are understaffed. Don seldom misses work, taking great pride in delivering exceptional results for Spot On. His positive attitude and enthusiasm make him a true asset to our team, and he genuinely enjoys coming to work every day. In light of Don’s outstanding contributions and remarkable qualities, The Arc Ontario endorses him for this well-deserved recognition. Jared Dapp SecureScan • Albany/Albany County Jared Dapp has been a dedicated and highly valued member of the SecureScan team since 2013. Throughout his tenure, Jared has proven to be a self-starter who demonstrates a strong work ethic and a positive attitude in everything he does. Born and raised in Texas, Jared eventually moved to the Capital District. His educational journey took a little detour as he left school early, but his determination never waned. Having overcome a debilitating alcohol addiction at a young age, Jared went on to earn his GED, but continued to struggle to find a job due to gaps in employment and the criminal history that often comes with substance abuse. With help from his counselors at Altamont House and Northeast Career Planning at Unity House, Jared was given an opportunity to interview for an entry-level position in SecureScan’s scanning department, where he excelled at teaching and training, and eventually became manager of operations for the entire department. For the past three years, Jared has operated SecureScan’s mobile shredding truck, serving as a representative for the company throughout the Capital Region. His honesty, dependability and hardworking nature make him a perfect fit for the role, where he takes great pride in providing a quality service to customers. When Jared isn’t out on the road, he uses skills learned from his father, as well as from YouTube, to make repairs around the office and to keep the equipment running smoothly. Having reached 10 years of sobriety, Jared says his job at SecureScan has helped him stay focused and centered, attributing at least part of his success to a consistent schedule and the satisfaction that comes from a hard day’s work. “Every day I get satisfaction from working hard and performing a valuable service for our customers,” he said. Jared’s excellence doesn’t stop at the end of his shift. Outside of work, Jared lives independently, dedicating much of his time and resources to taking care of his father who is currently struggling with health-related issues. In his free time, Jared enjoys camping and hiking with his dog, and is currently building a cabin on his family’s property near Saratoga. When informed about his nomination for NYSID’s 20th award year, Jared was humble and grateful. His nomination serves as recognition for how far he has come. Northeast Career Planning at Unity House has been an invaluable pillar of support for him at work. Jared expressed his heartfelt thanks to Brendan Bush and Valerie Carley, and everyone at Unity House, who are always ready to extend their My paycheck helps me to… assistance whenever he needs it. ...stay independent and help my family. Stephen Discavage The Arc Wayne • Newark/Wayne County Stephen Discavage has worked as a janitor on a NYSID contract since February 2020, coming in every day with a positive attitude and eager to do his job. Stephen has a section of a building assigned to him and independently completes all the janitorial tasks with good work quality. He likes his job because of the calm atmosphere, the paid time off that allows him to spend time with his family, and that he is helping to keep people healthier by providing a clean environment for them. Stephen came to the Arc Wayne in November 2009, and immediately began intensive training to prepare him for work. For the first few years, he worked through Key Industries at various production opportunities, including electronics assembly and various valve assemblies. He also tried out janitorial work; collecting trash and recycling, cleaning bathrooms, and learning to use a floor scrubber. Through these experiences, he gained the ability to earn a paycheck. In 2014, Stephen was offered the opportunity to work on a NYSID contract at the Finger Lakes DDSO. He was enthusiastic as it gave him a pay increase and paid time off. He gained independence by being responsible for the cleaning area assigned to him, and he learned to improve his work and to spot quality issues on his own. This gave Stephen the incentive to apply for a job in the community, and in 2015, he began a job stocking shelves at Walmart. Due to circumstances beyond his control, he was unable to work again until 2016, returning to Key Industries doing offsite production. He was offered a full-time janitorial position at one business, but was unable to pursue it because of transportation issues. A janitorial job on a NYSID contract opened up in 2020, and Stephen was happy to have this opportunity again. Stephen was married in September 2013, and he and his wife have a son who is now 8 years old. He is a devoted father and loves spending time with his family. They enjoy going to the movies and playing video games together, and are huge wrestling fans. They also like to go on vacation. Marc Donnelly Arc Herkimer • Herkimer/Herkimer County Marc joined Herkimer Industries more than two years ago when the team took on a new food contract. He quickly learned the various drink mix recipes and became an integral part of launching this new collaboration. Marc is an eager, fun, easygoing young man who is willing to lend a hand and learn new things. Supervisors were quick to realize his capabilities. A year after joining Herkimer Industries, Marc was assigned to important production items sold to New York State customers. He now works on Stop the Bleed kits for several State clients, HAIX boots for the State Police and others, and completes the pick-and-pack for NYS Department of Transportation, as well as Thruway Rain Gear orders. Independence is important to Marc. He uses his paycheck to pay rent and live self-sufficiently. “It feels good not having to ask people for money,” he said. Although Marc’s potential has yet to be fully realized, his continued success will be a pleasure to assist.

Robert Flaherty Imaging & Microfilm Access, Inc. • Bohemia/Nassau County Every now and then, an employee comes along who makes you wish you had 10 of them. Rob Flaherty is one such employee. Rob joined Imaging & Microfilm Access (IMA) in 2019 through a referral from Maryhaven Center of Hope. He was hired as a document preparation clerk and has excelled in this detail-oriented, repetitive-task position. Rob takes pride in every job he performs, thinking ahead and anticipating problems so he can take corrective action. Rob’s work ethic is second to none. He takes public transportation to work and is never late. He does not take days off, even in extreme weather. He is conscientious and meticulous about all he does, from the mundane cleaning of his workstation to the more complex identifying and preparing of records for other processes. Rob is always willing to help others, from carrying heavy boxes to answering questions about work to offering suggestions on how to better accomplish tasks. There has never been an assignment that Rob hasn’t taken on with enthusiasm and a congenial attitude. He takes it upon himself to do tasks that are not specifically assigned to him, but that he knows need to be done. Rob asks questions if unsure of something, and often shares his knowledge with other employees, enabling the production floor to run more smoothly. When the company finds itself in the unfortunate position of having to temporarily lay off employees, Rob is one of the last to go and one of the first to be recalled. His job coach shares that Rob loves his job and eagerly looks forward to receiving the call to return. Hearing that an employee so enjoys their job is refreshing and is reflected in Rob’s performance. Rob has made important and valuable contributions to the work environment in the time he has been with IMA. His level of maturity and positive outlook gain him more difficult and detailed projects, which he readily accepts. During her 23 years of employment, she has developed and mastered the skillset needed to succeed as a mail clerk, where she is responsible for prepping and processing mailings for the State of New York and other NYSID contract work. Her job requires attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to do these things within tight time constraints. Christina is a consummate professional and a great co-worker. Her work attendance is exemplary and she rarely misses a day. She is always on time and responds well to instructions given to her. Over the years, Christina has earned the respect of her supervisors, colleagues and support staff, who praise her pleasant demeanor and unwavering willingness to help out as much as she can. Although she was unable to work for an extended period, she wasted no time getting back into the swing of things once she was able to return. During the pandemic, Christina continued to work actively with support staff to preserve and improve her job skills, and stay prepared to return to work. She also mentored those of her peers interested in obtaining meaningful employment. Further testament to Christina’s adaptability is her willingness to do tasks that are usually outside her normal routine. For example, she has been called upon to work on the mail-sorting machine, which involves non-stop focus and movement to pull from a machine that sorts mail at an extremely high rate per minute. Christina resides in a Center residence in Delmar. When she is not working, she attends the Center’s without-walls program, which gives her the opportunity to remain active, explore her community, and spend time with her friends. One of her housemates works with her on the mail fulfillment team, and they have a close relationship both at home and at work. Christina also enjoys spending quality time with her nieces and nephews. She relishes the benefits of having steady employment and takes immense pride in being able to maintain an independent and fulfilling lifestyle.

Ramon Hunt The Corporate Source • Garden City/Nassau County Hundreds of people come through the doors of the Human Resources Administration (HRA) building in lower Manhattan every day. Keeping this space clean is not an easy task, but an important part of the daily life of Ramon Hunt. Each day, Ramon travels by subway from his home in Brooklyn into Manhattan to be a part of The Corporate Source (TCS) cleaning team who ensure that the building is spotless. According to his supervisor, Anthony, Ramon is a reliable and conscientious employee, and he’s glad to have him on his team. Ramon started with TCS in November 2012 after participating in the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities’ Employment Training Program (ETP). He was hired to work at a preschool where TCS had a commercial cleaning contract, and learned the job tasks with significant support from job coaches and supervisors. It wasn’t always smooth sailing, as Ramon had to work through issues with transportation and issues outside of the job. Over time, with hard work and the support of his TCS managers, Ramon’s work tolerance and skills increased along with his ability to perform work independently. He made slow, steady and consistent progress that ultimately led to him being named the lead janitor. Like many other job sites, Ramon’s place of employment was closed due to COVID in March 2020. When TCS began offering state-of-the art disinfecting and high-touch cleaning services that were critical during the pandemic, Ramon joined this team of essential workers. He worked throughout the pandemic and learned new skills, followed vital safety measures, and worked collaboratively with his co-workers. Because of his high level of motivation and dependability, Ramon was selected for a full-time janitorial position at the HRA building where he works today. Ramon is extremely proud to be a TCS employee and you can clearly see the pride that he takes in his work. Not only does he take ownership of the janitorial work that he is responsible for today, he expresses a willingness to keep learning new skills to take on more responsibility in the future. The sky is the limit for Ramon. He appreciates the financial freedom that comes from working and enjoys being able to go to the movies and bowling, play basketball, and go to the beach to relax with his friends. When Joel first began the new job, he was nervous, as he had never worked in a warehouse environment before. This nervousness subsided quickly, as he began to distinguish himself as one of the most dedicated workers at the facility. Joel is active, reliable and present in all of his duties, staying organized and tidy as he goes through his day. While sometimes requiring retraining in order for an idea or concept to stick, Joel takes correction and constructive criticism well and looks to improve in the few areas in which he struggles. Hunter Mason The Arc of Madison Cortland • Oneida/Madison County Hunter joined the Arc of Madison Cortland team more than two years ago, quickly acclimating to the Integrated Business Center while also enrolled in pre-vocational services. He is a scheduled young man who speaks what is on his mind and likes a regimented routine. Hunter started out working as a packer on the retail food storage lines and the burner assembly lines. As his confidence increased, so did his productivity, accuracy and involvement. While discussing his productivity with a co-worker, his friend suggested that the next day, Hunter should try to beat his previous daily productivity numbers. Once the challenge was set, Hunter quickly began beating his and everyone else’s numbers from the previous day. His peers soon wanted in on the challenge, and Hunter blossomed. Next, Hunter took on the NYSID margarine cup packing operation. Although it involved some training to get his accuracy to the required standard, he met that challenge, too. Hunter’s love of art, a talent that he rarely shares with others, landed him on the NYSID NYS police car graphics contract. Creating the gold prism letters, numbers and emblems for the trooper vehicles is very rewarding to him. To weed the letters and numbers without ripping them takes some serious skill. Hunter acquired this ability and is now an experienced part of that team. Hunter is a man with a plan. Working with the pre-vocational team, he is focused on improving his social skills and concentrating on attaining his ultimate dream job: working as a custodian at the Vernon Verona Sherrill Central School. Stephen Nocerito AHRC Nassau • Glen Head/Nassau County Beginning in February 2023, Stephen, or Steve as he prefers to be called, has been a porter at the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the NYS Department of Labor (DOL). While relatively new to this role, Steve approaches his job with zeal and fervor. Being part of a superb team who all take pride in helping one another, he has emerged as a leader who takes initiative and has quickly become an integral part of his crew. He enjoys quietly helping others when needed, and does so without seeking recognition. Steve works five evenings a week. He has stellar attendance and is never tardy. Steve is instrumental in setting up his team with equipment and supplies before they join him, and in putting them away once the rest of his team has gone home. His evenings begin at the DOL, where he eagerly cleans bathrooms, disinfects surfaces, mops floors, tidies staff-gathering areas, and empties the trash. Steve understands the importance of completing these tasks wholly and accurately, and has developed a system to ensure that he is meticulous. The second part of his shift is at the DMV, a vast space encompassing many workstations, bathrooms, break areas, garbage cans, and a sea of flooring all requiring comprehensive attention to detail. Within this immense space it would be easy to overlook something, but Steve enjoys the challenge and employs his system of cleaning to assure full completion. Steve tends to each task enthusiastically, often willing to do jobs that are less preferred by his colleagues. He has the ability to find joy in everything he does and often sees the “bright side” in the humblest of tasks. Steve’s team has taken to him completely. Teammates and management speak enthusiastically of him, and the feeling is mutual. There is a warmth and trust that was established quickly, and Steve is part of a very reliable team. Being recognized in any capacity will undoubtedly make Steve feel humble and shy. The hope is that such recognition will reinforce what he is told often, that he is an essential member of a team that serves a vital role in the community. Steve’s success as a part of a team of porters, and as an individual who desires to grow increasingly independent, is just one building block in what is destined to be a growing tower of achievement. Steve’s triumphs are an indication of the vital and reciprocal relationship between a person who desires to be a vital member of his community through competitive employment and with NYSID, contractors and vendors, community-based organizations, and employers. Steve serves as an example of the potential that exists within all of our communities to gainfully employ those who are able, willing and excellent. Logan was diagnosed with Dystonia, a form of Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy, at age 3. He had difficulties with balance, walking and fine motor skills. Involuntary muscle contractions and irregular posture caused persistent pain and fatigue, affected his speech, and created cognitive delays. Logan’s incredible resilience and fighter’s determination were shaped from getting up from every single fall. Growing up, Logan faced unkind words, stares and bullying, but was determined to prove doubters wrong. Logan was awarded an IEP diploma in 2007 and stayed on at BOCES until he turned 21. At the typical age of independence, he struggled with the 24/7 emotionally draining nature of his Dystonia, and faced an uncertain future. In 2009, Logan enrolled in Day Habilitation Services at the Arc Steuben. He worked diligently on the soft skills necessary for employment: communication, collaboration, self-awareness, and problem-solving, and on the skills required on the various assembly and packaging contracts. He was proud of his paycheck, but dreamed of the ultimate level of independence – his driver’s license. According to Logan, “People thought it wouldn’t be possible, so I had to convince everyone that it was.” After working with a rahabilitation driving specialist over three years, he received his license, the proudest day of his life. Logan saved his earnings and purchased a Ford Taurus equipped with adaptive hand controls. Driving increased his mobility, boosted his self-confidence, and proved doubters wrong. Logan was next hired at Arc Steuben’s Business Operations in 2018. Initially shy and reserved, his skills increased and his friendships deepened as his self-confidence improved. In August 2021, historic flash flooding destroyed his family home and his beloved car. But as Logan had done before, he dusted himself off, salvaged the adaptive hand controls, and purchased another vehicle. In 2022, Logan was promoted to the Arc Allegany-Steuben’s screen-printing/embroidery operation, Stitched INK. He works in the package per person operation, folding and packing. Logan is immensely proud of the role he plays in creating apparel for NYS Parks and Recreation and other government customers. He is respected by his peers for his positivity, sense of humor and work ethic. Business Operations Manager Rebecca Schutt said, “Logan brings a constant positive attitude and energy. He shows If I didn’t have this job… respect and appreciation to his co-workers, contributing to a more positive workplace environment.” ...I would be unable to afford my car. Christian Toledo The Arc Greater Hudson Valley • Monticello/Sullivan County Christian was referred by ACCES-VR to the Arc Greater Hudson Valley’s Supported Employment division in April 2003. At that time, he had few transferable work skills and was characterized by a tendency to give up when tasks became difficult. Nonetheless, Christian began on the Forever Green Lawn Crew, and worked on both the lawn crew and Dustbusters Cleaning Crew in 2005. He has worked exclusively on the cleaning crew for the past 17 years, during which time he has overcome many challenges that sometimes hinder other individuals from achieving success in employment. Christian experienced ups and downs acclimating to the cleaning crew, but has matured into a team player. His job coach describes him as a reliable worker who rarely takes time off and has a positive attitude, presenting a good role model for his co-workers. Christian initially struggled with using his personal cell phone at work, often stopping to play games instead of working. Another is his improved attendance, which was once so poor that he was in danger of losing his job. Christian has improved to the point where he willingly steps up and assumes extra shifts when needed. The third area where he has shown tremendous growth is his attitude and treatment of his co-workers. He now laughs and jokes with them instead of being surly, sullen and short-tempered. Christian recently assisted at a non-NYSID site he had worked at years before. The staff there remembered him fondly and were extremely happy to see him. This is but one example of the impact Christian has on members of the community. Christian was born in Argentina and came to this country at a young age. Edward Warner MOZAIC • Waterloo/Seneca County Ed began working for MOZAIC as a member of the mobile production crew for a local manufacturing company performing assembly and degreasing in August 2001. Ed eventually wanted to try something new and transferred to MOZAIC’s manufacturing site, Finger Lakes Textiles, in 2016. He quickly learned the ins and outs of trimming fleece and wool for government orders, becoming passionate about his job and proud of his performance. Ed is a hard-working employee, who when asked to change jobs or assist with anything, jumps into action. Finger Lakes Textiles added heavy-duty tools to its NYSID product offerings in 2021: a square-point and round-point shovel, an ice/floor scraper, a leaf rake and a bow rake, a snow pusher, and a snow shovel. These tools were unlike anything Finger Lakes Textiles had ever assembled before, which meant employees needed to be willing to learn new skills to complete the orders. The call went out for those who might be interested in assembling tools, and Ed immediately expressed interest in learning the job. He truly loves to learn and build his skill repertoire. Ed easily mastered the assembly steps for all seven tools, learning to operate the drill and rivet machine, where to place the NYSID/ agency product identification label, and how to properly package the tools for direct shipment. He can single-handedly make the tools from start to finish, and he does it all with a smile. When Ed is not working on NYSID tools, he sets hems for Army fleece caps using a rotating jig to set an even 4-inch hem, ultimately producing 1,000 hems per day. Ed is a great example to showcase because he is dependable, has excellent communication skills, works well with all employees and management, and is always willing to take on any challenge that is presented to him. Working at Finger Lakes Textiles is rewarding to him, and bringing home a steady paycheck allows him to be an integral part of his community. Chris has been with us for decades and we always had him doing something he was good at and comfortable with. We never thought of changing up something that was clearly working well. We were overwhelmed and excited about how well Chris adapted. He has 100% opened up, something we weren’t even sure he was capable of. Now he talks all the time. He found his voice.” Chris started working three hours a day, two days a week for the DOT, quickly adding days and contracts. He now works six-hour shifts many nights a week at five different locations, and is always willing to take on more. He works on a team of three, and with a team leader, and wouldn’t have it any other way. “Many times, crew members want to graduate on to their own site which they manage alone, but Chris wants to stay with a team. He’s thriving,” said Jim. Chris lived with his parents until they passed away. In 2012, he got his own apartment. Having his job through Arc’s Contract Services helps him remain independent so he can continue to live a productive life. He likes visiting with his siblings, reading magazines, and staying active by taking walks and going to the gym. He has taken cruises to Jamaica’s Coco Cay and Cozumel, Mexico. He says his dream job would be incorporating the If I didn’t have this job… things he is good at with the things he likes to do, ...I would be bored. such as cleaning the equipment at the gym or I like to stay busy. doing laundry on a cruise ship, as long as he is working with a team.

Karen Whitney Lifetime Assistance • Rochester/Monroe County Karen Whitney can be described by a quote from Susan B. Anthony: “Independence is Happiness.” When Karen was asked how it felt to be nominated as a NYSID Outstanding Performer for a second time, she replied, “I’m really happy and proud to have earned it.” She also said that her late parents are looking down on her and they would be proud, too. When asked what her dream job would be, Karen didn’t miss a beat: “This is my dream job. I want to work here until I retire.” Karen has been a document destruction technician for Classified Scanning and Shredding at Lifetime Assistance since 2009. What makes her happy about her job? “Being a team player, we do important things. Everyone pulls together and we all do our part. My favorite jobs are washing totes, shredding on the line, and sorting through boxes,” she said. Karen also enjoys delivering packages throughout the building. Karen said it was hard at first to break down completed boxes and sort through binders, as she was born with some physical limitations affecting her range of motion and the use of her right arm and hand. She said that tying bale is still hard for her, but she tries. Independence can be described as personal growth. There are two areas where Karen has made large improvements over the years. First, with occupational therapy assistance, she gained techniques to help utilize her arm and hand, whether sorting material on the conveyor belt or working on binders. She now gets her uniform shirt on by herself. Second, Karen has increased her range of motion and uses both arms and hands to better complete tasks. Karen said that if she didn’t have this job, she would never have gotten to practice using her arm and hand every day. She is also proud that when she visits family, she can now help fold the laundry and get the dishes out of the dishwasher. The second area of personal growth for Karen was to be able to problem solve and be involved in decision-making. She shared that sometimes things happened that would trouble her throughout the day, but now she has the confidence to talk things out and find a solution. Karen loves to get a paycheck for all her hard work. She feels like a professional woman and dresses the part, along with getting her hair done and buying nice clothes and jewelry. Karen said it helps her to look and feel her best. Being nominated for this She helps buy groceries, pays for events she attends, award makes me feel… purchases gifts for her family, and contributes to her savings. Karen said that during COVID-19, she knew how it ...happy and proud. I’m part of a workforce felt not to have a job. At Classified Shredding, she belongs that does good. to a team, has many friends, and is part of the workforce. I love that I have this job. Karen helps her community by recycling materials every day, another source of pride.

Holly Worden Arc Otsego • Oneonta/Otsego County “Good morning, Sunshine!” A chipper cadence and a gleaming smile accompany this daily greeting when Holly enters the building, and her infectiously positive attitude never slows down. According to John Dabulewicz, a vocational counselor who works with Holly in the site-based prevocational training program at Creekside Industries where she has worked for the past 15 years, Holly’s stand-out attribute is “her consistently pleasant attitude.” John added, “And her fellow trainees really like her and enjoy spending time with her.” It’s not difficult to see why. Holly is always quick to find a compliment to give to everyone she comes across, whether it’s something they are wearing or simply their smile. Former Vocational Services Manager Sharon Maggio added, “Holly takes an interest in those around her, often asking how they’re doing or if she can help in any way. Holly doesn’t hesitate to offer assistance to her co-trainees or take on additional tasks for the good of the team,” another reason Holly is so well-liked by her peers and supervisors alike. Beyond her irresistible personality lies an indomitable work ethic. Holly is a valued member of the NYSID contract team at Creekside Industries because of her flexibility, hard work, and attention to detail. According to her supervisor, Terry Murray, Holly excels at running the machines that seal the packages of adult briefs processed in her area. Terry explained that Holly is also excellent at accurate counting and labeling, essential tasks for fulfilling customer orders. Holly is also known to double-check her work for accuracy, asking for feedback from her supervisor if she’s unsure. When asked what Terry enjoys most about having Holly on her team, she said emphatically, “Everything! I like everything about her. She makes the day go faster.” On a personal level, Holly plays just as hard as she works. She is known for her love of line dancing and horseback riding, which she does as often as she can. Her job at Creekside means she gets to do some of the things she enjoys most, like dining out and going dancing. Holly cannot imagine her life without the productivity and camaraderie she experiences as part of the Creekside team. One of the many people who recognize what participating in the NYSID contracts at Creekside has done for Holly is Sharon Maggio, who has worked with her for almost as long as she has been in the program. “Holly has worked so hard at becoming her own advocate. Developing her own voice over the past couple of years has been If I didn’t have this job… difficult for her because she lacked confidence in her ...I would be sad and upset. own ability to determine what her life should be. But now she truly understands and recognizes her own value and potential.” When asked how she feels about being nominated for this award, Holly jumped up and down, and exclaimed while clapping “Really excited!”

Elisabeth Yong Goodwill Industries of Greater NY/Northern NJ • Brooklyn/Kings County Elisabeth took the initial steps to employment success in 2019 through a collaboration between GoodTemps, Goodwill’s non-profit staffing agency, and the Henry Street Settlement, one of Goodwill’s community placement partners. Up until then, she struggled to work more than one day a week, doubting her ability to hold a full-time job and live independently like her peers. Elisabeth’s previous work attempts were unfulfilling and did not last long. Although she was interested in clerical administrative opportunities, she lacked appropriate skills for competitive employment. She nervously signed on for training and employment assistance with the Henry Street Settlement, a social assistance program which has served individuals and families since 1893. With the support of her counselors, Elisabeth enrolled in the Unlimited Training Program sponsored by the NYS Education Department’s Office of Adult Career and Continuing Education, designed to train and place individuals with chronic mental health conditions into meaningful employment. This provided her with the appropriate skills and confidence needed for referral to GoodTemps, further developing her skills in an environment accepting and supportive of her disability. “Before coming to GoodTemps, I doubted my skills and energy to be employed full-time. GoodTemps proved me wrong,” she said. Elisabeth registered with GoodTemps in June 2020 with a goal to obtain routine, meticulous computer-based work. Her initial temporary office assignment was extended on three occasions, during which time she learned to handle a high workload and manage different databases. She was responsive, professional, eager, and patient, good qualities in today’s workforce. Due to her good performance, GoodTemps placed Elisabeth in data entry positions with the NYS Department of Health and the NYC Department of Education. From there, she landed a permanent position with Elderplan, a non-profit health organization which provides Medicare Advantage and long-term care plans to New Yorkers. “I knew I liked to enter data accurately in computer systems, as it allowed me to focus and feel accomplished,” Elisabeth said. “I did not know there were jobs like data entry clerks that companies need. I am really glad that GoodTemps assisted me,” she said. With the support of both GoodTemps and Henry Street Settlement, Elisabeth overcame the impact and Being nominated for this stigma of her disability to lead a fulfilling life. Susan Yule The Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter • Utica/Oneida County Susan strives for quality work, often helping co-workers who may be struggling. She has found success working for Progress Industries of The Arc, Oneida-Lewis for the past 13 years, and is an old pro. She is willing to try any job offered to her and puts her all into learning each one. Susan’s smile is contagious, frequently leaving her co-workers wondering what to expect of the day. She is very sociable, with many friends she enjoys talking and laughing with throughout her workday. Susan likes her work area to be organized and run smoothly, all great qualities of an exemplary employee. There have been times when she has struggled with who she is, what level of support she needs, and establishing trusting relationships. For the past 12 months, Susan has also focused on boosting her coping skills, allowing her to be comfortable in her own skin, which has changed her mindset while at work. Susan often works on the more complex jobs that many of her co-workers often find too challenging to succeed, which gives her great confidence in her abilities. One of those jobs is the NYSID soap contract. Susan has commented on how she loves the smell, and knowing it’s a higher-paying job motivates her when that contract is running. “I have worked very hard over the last year to change things in my life for the better, so when I was nominated (for this award) I was happy and excited,” she said. “I don’t want to know what life would be like if I didn’t have this job,” Susan said. Through meaningful employment and her drive to succeed, she lives independently, pays her own bills, and understands that when she has the opportunity to work in a higherpaying job, it’s extra money for her to buy the things she may normally pass on due to her budget. There is no doubt Susan accepts who she is and allows the support necessary into her life to be successful and happy at work and in her community.
I like my job because… ...it gives me a sense of accomplishment to be at my job this long.
