Hello NYSEF Community, The temperature is dropping and snow has already begun to accumulate in the mountains of New York. Our FIS alpine athletes just left for Copper, Colorado to prepare for their December races while the rest of the teams plan and prepare for their first days on snow. It’s no secret that sound preparation drives successful outcomes. Oftentimes preparation can be hard and lined with hurdles that take time to conquer. It can wear one down both physically and emotionally to utter exhaustion. Athletes with tenacity are often those that make big moves in results and climb atop the podium. Take the recent proposal on this year’s NYS ballot, ‘Prop 1’. As an initiative that has been discussed for decades, it was finally proposed in March 2023. Its passage seemed like an unachievable feat needing to pass multiple legislative sessions and the 2025 general election. Prop 1 passed earlier this week. The team that prepared and lobbied for what they believe should be proud of their accomplishment. 2025 Lake Placid Hall of Fame inductee and longtime NYSEF ski jumping coach, Larry Stone, is no stranger to the importance of tenacity. Whether it’s the multiple Olympians he has helped develop or the youngest newcomers to the small hills at the Olympic Jumping Complex, it takes courage, determination and grit to succeed. Congrats, coach Larry! With the season quickly approaching, let’s all ensure that we’re ready to overcome the inevitable challenges that we’ll face in sport this winter. The outcome will be worth the work. Don’t forget to SAVE THE DATE for the Chairman’s Holiday Party on December 27, 2025 in Lake Placid. We’d love to see you all there. Think SNOW,

NYSEF Belleayre Kicks Off the Preseason with Team Dryland Sessions

As summer turned to fall, NYSEF at Belleayre gathered athletes and families for a series of open dryland training sessions during the region’s fall festival weekends. These sessions marked the start of the preseason and gave athletes the opportunity to reconnect, build fitness, and strengthen team bonds before the snow flies. Athletes from all age groups participated in hikes to the top of DOT, incorporating visualization exercises, team-building challenges, and highintensity interval training (HIIT) along the way. Many athletes also completed their first motion analysis of the season, providing valuable insights to guide their preseason work in strength, endurance, and agility. Over the past few seasons, one of NYSEF Belleayre’s core goals has been to prioritize team fitness and community connection. These dryland sessions are not only a way to prepare physically for the winter ahead, but also to build camaraderie across age groups and families. 6
As the team looks ahead to the coming weeks, excitement is building for the first flakes in the Catskills and the official start of another great ski season!

With perfect fall weather and strong participation at both our Belleayre and Piermont hikes, the energy and enthusiasm were high. Athletes and coaches alike left inspired and motivated — ready to take their hard work from the trails to the snow!

NYSEF/Northwood Prep Project Recap: Valle Nevado, Chile This September, NYSEF and Northwood School athletes and staff traveled to Valle Nevado, Chile for the annual prep period, held from September 22 to October 6, 2025. Led by coaches Seppi Stiegler and Jeremy Transue, along with assistant coaches Colden Mrak, Dave Wenn, Mike Gilbert, and Northwood’s Raychel West, the group settled into Hotel Puerta del Sol for two weeks of world-class training and learning. Over 11 productive days on snow, athletes focused on free-skiing fundamentals and technical progression in GS and SL, capping off the camp with standout performances at the Chilean National Slalom Races. Marie Jeanne Cazes claimed an impressive 2nd place finish, while Lola Ferrilo, Maika Beaudoin, and Hudson Marshall all achieved their first FIS Slalom results. Consistent firm snow, sunny skies, and exceptional training lanes made for near-perfect conditions. 8
The schedule blended athletic and academic excellence. Each afternoon, student-athletes participated in structured study halls, ensuring they stayed current with coursework. Teachers collaborated by preparing custom packets and group-oriented lessons, encouraging both independence and teamwork. Many students also coordinated video calls with teachers back home to review material, maintain accountability, and stay connected to their academic responsibilities. Raychel West of Northwood School praised the students’ focus and discipline: “I’m proud of how the students stayed focused. Their schedules are jampacked, and learning material independently isn’t easy. However, the athletes are held to a high standard… This accountability helps create a seamless transition back to classes.”

Coach Seppi Stiegler commended the group’s professionalism and commitment. “Well done to our skiers and thank you to our staff of coaches for providing a professional training environment.”
Beyond academics, athletes engaged in daily dryland sessions, including mobility, core, agility, and recovery work, as well as individual video analysis and evening goal-setting meetings. The result was a balanced environment where both athletic and academic growth flourished.

“The FIS teams were back saying ‘Chao!’ in Chile for two awesome weeks of training! The gym is great and all, but we were definitely excited to be back on snow! Bright blue skies, lots of open space, and many lane options make Valle Nevado hard to beat for a fun and productive fall training” said Men’s Assistant Coach Colden Mrak. Women’s Assistant Coach Mike Gilbert highlighted the group’s cohesion and adaptability: “The group came together quickly to have a very productive prep period. They managed the altitude, snow conditions, and weather like pros. I’m super excited about the season and looking forward to working with this energetic group of young ladies.” Dave Wenn, also on the women’s coaching staff, added “Once again Valle Nevado provides an excellent training venue. Frozen early morning snow, a variety of training venues, and many days of sunshine give the athletes a great opportunity to jump-start their competitive season. I really appreciated the focus and energy the athletes brought every day, and their willingness to engage in the process of being a better ski racer.”

Flaming Leaves Fest A High-Flying Fall Finale in Lake Placid

The vibrant colors of autumn framed a weekend of world-class competition as the 2025 Flaming Leaves Festival returned to Lake Placid’s Olympic Jumping Complex on November 18th and 19th. This year’s event doubled as the U.S. National Championships for both USA Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined USA, drawing the nation’s best athletes alongside several of Canada’s rising stars. Families, fans, and community members gathered under clear skies to enjoy two days of elite competition, youth jumping, and festival fun — complete with live music, gondola rides, food trucks, and family activities. The festival opened Saturday with perfect crisp fall weather, though strong winds caused periodic delays in jumping. All eyes were on the HS128 large hill, where the nation’s best jumpers battled for national titles. On the women’s side, Annika Belshaw continued her reign at the top of U.S. Ski Jumping, soaring to her ninth U.S. National Championship. Fourteen-year-old Caroline Chor, who trained with NYSEF and Coach Colin Delaney throughout the summer, stunned the field by earning her first national podium, finishing second ahead of veteran Paige Jones in third, and laying down the longest jump of the day at 115.5 meters in round 1.

The day also featured the first half of the Nordic Combined competition, as athletes completed their jumping rounds before moving to Mount Van Hoevenberg for the roller-skiing segment. NYSEF alum and former world champion Tara Geraghty-Moats made a triumphant return to the sport, winning the women’s event with an impressive ski performance. Alexa Brabec finished second and Annika Malacinski third. On the men’s side, Ben Loomis and Stephen Schumann went head-to-head for the top spot, with Carter Brubaker holding strong for third.

In the men’s large hill competition, Jason Colby captured his first career national title with a powerful performance on the HS128. NYSEF’s Tate Frantz secured second place, while Andrew Urlaub rounded out the podium in third. Additional strong NYSEF results came from Eli Larkin (10th), Mitchel Penning (11th), and Max Fey (15th).
The afternoon saw a small-hill competition for youth and developmental athletes on the HS10, HS20, and K48 jumps, where NYSEF’s youngest ski jumpers showcased their summer’s hard work. The girls’ HS10/U10 category saw a complete NYSEF sweep, with Nadia Geil taking first, followed by Isabelle Szczech and Adalina Weibrecht. On the boys’ side, Wyeth Taylor of SWSA earned the win ahead of NYSEF’s Phoenix Cook and Frank Politi. In the girls’ HS20/U12 division, Catherine Chor of Ford Sayre — inspired by her older sister Caroline’s performances on the HS128 — took top honors, with Weibrecht and Geil again landing on the podium in second and third. The boys’ HS20/U12 title went to Wyeth Taylor, followed by Caleb Bodwell of SWSA in second and Frank Politi in third. NYSEF’s Greg Bertasso earned third in the open boys’ HS20, while Paisley Raincourt placed second in the girls’ K48/U16 event. The open K48 girls’ category was won by NYSEF’s Islay Sheil.

For NYSEF’s youth program, these results marked a celebratory conclusion to the summer and fall training season. Coach Kaileigh Moore praised the team’s development:

Sunday’s competition brought new challenges as swirling winds on the knoll forced officials to shorten the event to a single round on the HS100. Despite the conditions, athletes showcased resilience and composure. In the women’s ski jumping championship, Alexa Brabec claimed the national title, followed by Paige Jones in second and Caroline Chor once again on the podium in third — her second national podium of the weekend. For the men, NYSEF Alum Tate Frantz delivered a commanding performance to earn the win and his third U.S. National Championship title, with Jason Colby taking second and Andrew Urlaub finishing third.

“I’m so proud of this group of athletes and how hard they have worked all summer. I’ve seen incredible progress, and it’s been amazing to watch these young kids work their way from the 10, to the 20, to the 48 with confidence and determination. Not only did the kids have a ton of fun competing, but they got to show off their progress to the crowds and take some hardware home as well!”
In Nordic Combined, Tara Geraghty-Moats once again displayed her trademark speed and endurance, winning the women’s event for the second consecutive day. Alexa Brabec and Caroline Chor followed closely behind. On the men’s side, Carter Brubaker took the victory, with Ben Loomis in second and Erik Lynch finishing third.

Beyond the competition, the Flaming Leaves Festival once again proved why it is one of Lake Placid’s most cherished fall traditions. Families rode the gondola for panoramic views of the High Peaks, children enjoyed facepainting and games in the kids zone, and local food trucks and live music filled the venue with energy. Crowds packed the stands and cheered from the landing hill, with many spectators following the Nordic Combined action over to Mount Van Hoevenberg to catch the roller-skiing races amid the brilliant fall foliage. With large crowds, ideal weather, and performances that highlighted the depth of U.S. ski jumping and Nordic Combined talent, the 2025 Flaming Leaves Festival marked a fitting close to the summer and fall jumping season. For NYSEF athletes, it was both a celebration of progress and a launchpad toward winter — as many now prepare to compete internationally and continue their build-up to the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Italy.

Utah Altitude Project & International Team Trials

We were granted amazing fall weather during our time out West; think cold and crisp mornings, and then hitting 70+ degrees with full sun by midday -- what a treat! Following the races, we hiked up Mt. Timpanogos and found ourselves in feet of snow. It was amazing to see our first snowfall and got us itching for the winter season! Some highlights of the camp include: movie nights as a team, trying our hand at tennis (we're going to stick to biathlon), mingling with our friends from other teams, and Coach Maddie giving everybody a felt animal based on their personality. Although none of our NYSEF athletes qualified for International Competition for trimester one (roughly mid November - end of December), athletes will still have the opportunity to qualify for World Cup/IBU Cup teams in mid-December -- so that is what our Pro athletes are focusing on at the moment. Abby (PG) is focusing on qualifying for the Youth/Junior World Championship team, and those trials races are at the end of December here in Lake Placid! Now that we're back home, we are getting in our final training preparations before the race season kicks off the first weekend of December in Craftsbury, VT. NYSEF’s Pro/PG Biathlon teams headed to Midway, Utah this October for twoweeks of altitude training, wrapping up with the Schutzenski Fall Biathlon Festival & International Team Trials. The team had a great training block in the Wasatch Mountains where we rollerskied many miles, shot hundreds of rounds, hiked and trail ran through various terrains, and played many hours of Settlers of Catan!
A New Addition Lands at Gore

Annually NYSEF is supported by donors, foundations, and grants that allow us to provide athletes with the support they need to chase their dreams. This support can also allow us to make needed capital upgrades. In the North Creek Region we have been supported by the Community Fund for the Greater Gore Region and a recipient of a Town of Johnsburg occupancy tax grant. This support is a testament to positive regional impact of our programming and also a major key to our efforts. The Community Fund for the Greater Gore Region has supported NYSEF annually for a number of years with the intention of providing scholarship dollars to a local athlete that participates in our programming. As cost of sport increases this is essential for us to help mitigate it for local families. We are incredibly grateful for the work the Community Fund does and appreciate their support of our efforts. The “Gore Shed Project” began in earnest with an application to the Town of Johnsburg’s occupancy tax grant program. NYSEF was awarded a significant portion of the funds required to make this project a reality. Working closely with Rich Burnley to identify a need at Gore for increased storage space to alleviate pressure on the training center for events and other times of high use, the value of a shed quickly became apparent. 20

The 14 x 36 shed will provide an additional 504 and square feet of storage space at Gore and is complete with heat and electric. We are particularly grateful for our partnership with ORDA and Gore Mountain General Manager Bone Bayse’s support of this project by clearing and leveling a pad and pulling electric to it. We’re excited to have a new addition for Gore and look forward to continuing to work with partners throughout the Gore region to help support the work we do at Gore. Thank you to the Town of Johnsburg for supporting this project and recognizing our work as an economic driver in the community.

Devo Summer Recap

Our development (DEVO) crew had an incredible summer filled with new teammates, lots of energy, growth, and teamwork! The athletes’ development on rollerskis was truly the standout of the summer season. With the support of our community, we were able to purchase a new youth rollerski fleet, providing properly sized equipment that gave athletes confidence and comfort during each session, while also enabling coaching staff to deliver specifically focused tactical and technical cross-country ski training. This was an ambitious step for our team, as rollerskiing requires exceptional self-awareness, balance, and control, along with a strong understanding of road safety and the ability to anticipate and react to potential hazards. Our team rose to the challenge with impressive maturity, demonstrating focus and responsibility throughout the summer. To cap off their summer training, several DEVO athletes participated in the Climb to the Castle (C2C) short course, the longest running rollerski race in the country up Whiteface Mountain that celebrates effort, perseverance, and reinforces a full load of summer training. Nine of the fifteen participants in the short course were members of our youth development team.

Some of our most memorable sessions this summer were our group hikes, often ending with a refreshing swim at a local “secret” spot. These moments captured the balance of training and fun that defines our DEVO program — developing endurance and camaraderie while enjoying one of the most diverse summer training locations, our backyard of the Adirondack Park!

A strong showing, and a clear reflection of how hard these athletes have been working, how fast they are becoming, and the potential they hold as a rising team in the East. The event gave our youngest skiers a chance to experience race-day excitement while sharing the road with elite athletes from all over the east! Specifically, our national team members (Jessie Diggins, Julia Kern and Ben Ogden) toed the line and skied beside our team. Our log of Vermont Cabot “Chasing the Cheese” was awarded to our youngest competitor, Lewis Hann, who completed the climb in a blistering 46 minutes!

To wrap up the summer, I’d encourage you to reach out to one of our athletes and ask about their favorite session. I can’t answer for them directly, but I have a feeling the highlight might have been our final evening hike up Roostercomb which was complete with a sunset summit celebration of homemade grilled cheese sandwiches shared with coaches Chris Rose and Scotty McClelland. A special thank you always goes out to all of our parents, coaches, and community partners who made this season possible. Your flexibility and enthusiasm continue to shape the success of our program and the growth of our development team. Special recognition to High Peaks Cyclery, the Saranac Lake Marina, Paul Smith’s College, and “Friends of NYSEF” for supporting C2C 2025! As the leaves turn our athletes are encouraged to stay active by running, biking, hiking, and enjoying fall school sports. Several of our development athletes are participating in school fall sports including some fast cross-country running! They are completing courses at blistering speeds across the region and it’s been exciting to see their strength, consistency, and team spirit carry seamlessly from the ski trails to the running trails this season. 24

This sale gives back directly to our program, so please try to make this a priority. Lake Placid Hall of Fame: Larry Stone

Born in Connecticut, Larry Stone grew up in the Litchfield Hills town of Salisbury, a hub for ski jumping thanks to its strong Norwegian community. Inspired by local Olympic ski jumper Roy Sherwood, Larry was introduced to Lake Placid at a young age, where he trained under Art Tokle and legendary coach Johnny Viscome. During this time, he began competing alongside Jay Rand Jr., a partnership that continues today as the two, along with Colin Delaney, coach the Lake Placid junior ski jumping program. Larry attended Hotchkiss School and went on to ski competitively for Williams College. After graduation, he moved to Lake Placid, where he taught at Northwood School and coached ski jumping and cross-country skiing. In 1988, he became head of the NYSEF Ski Jumping/Nordic Combined program, later serving as a U.S. Ski Team coach through the 1990s. Olympic Champion Bill Demong emerged from this era, as did trailblazing ski jumper Lindsey Van. Larry played a pivotal role in advancing women’s ski jumping, leading the first U.S. Women’s Team at the 2009 World Championships in Liberec, where Van claimed gold, and coaching the first American women to participate in Ski Flying at Vikersund, Norway, in 2004. Larry’s contributions have been recognized with multiple national awards, including Ski Jumping/Nordic Combined Development Coach of the Year (2005, 2025) and International Jumping Coach of the Year (1991). Now living in Jay, N.Y., Larry remains deeply involved in the sport. His passion for skiing continues through his daughters, Molly, a jumper, and Belle, an alpine racer.

Congratulations to NYSEF’s Larry Stone, who this past week was inducted into the Lake Placid Hall of Fame!
News from Northwood School October was a busy month at Northwood. From October 19–22, a committee from the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) visited campus as part of Northwood’s 10-year reaccreditation process. The committee, made up of school leaders from across the state, reviewed our programs and operations to ensure we continue to meet the standards set by NYSAIS and the New York State Board of Regents. This process helps confirm that Northwood is providing a strong and accountable educational experience for all students.

Later in the month, Northwood hosted the first College Admissions “Peak at Northwood” event on October 23–24, welcoming admission officers from Colgate University, Cornell University, Queen’s University, St. Lawrence University, and Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Over two days, the group attended classes, heard from student panels, and toured campus facilities to learn more about our programs, including Peak Pathways, LEAP, Advanced STEM and Humanities Research, and Adventure Sports. The admission officers also had the opportunity to visit our athletic venues across Lake Placid, including the Olympic Ski Jumping Complex, Mt Van Hoevenberg as well as the Olympic Center. The month ended with First Quarter Grades being released on October 28, marking the halfway point of the semester. To close out October, the Student Council hosted a fun Halloween week with a Haunted Classroom Building and Halloween Dance on October 30, followed by the Halloween Costume Contest on October 31, giving students the chance to show off their creativity and school spirit.

Northwood School is a coeducational, independent boarding school in Lake Placid, New York offering a trimester-based college preparatory curriculum for students in grades 9 through 12, plus a post-graduate year. NYSEF Staff Attends Eastern Region Coaches Symposium The US Ski and Snowboard Eastern Region Coaches Symposium took place on the weekend of October 18th and 19th at the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center. The symposium was an excellent way to kick off the season and refocus on our goals as coaches. The presentations offered valuable insights across many areas of the sport, and the opportunity to discuss these topics with coaches from other mountains made the experience even more meaningful. The boot fitting session with Matt Schiller of Park City Boot Room was a highlight, and it was great to see so many coaches from across the state engaged and eager to learn. The event reinforced our shared commitment to continuous improvement and collaboration for the benefit of our athletes. Taylor Feldeisen, NYSEF’s Head U16 Alpine coach at Gore Mountain had lots to say about the excitement of the atmosphere provided:

Also in attendance was Belleayre’s Kate McKenna Pavese. “The eastern region coaches symposium was such a great way to get back into the mindset of ski season! It was really valuable to be able to learn from all the different presenters, but also to spend time with coaches from the other mountains and actually discuss the topics that were being presented. I think when we’re able to share these topics and discuss this information together we actually learn more through perspective and interpretation than just the presentation! I thought it was really awesome how many coaches from New York and NYSEF specifically were present and looking to learn more. It definitely showed me that our community of coaches are all dedicated to getting better for the athletes, collaborating as a team, and bringing the latest insights from the sport to every level. I can’t wait to apply some of the things we learned to not only my coaching this year, but to our over overall program!” said Kate.

“It was awesome to kick start the season in a room full of coaches of so many different backgrounds from across the east. The speakers did a great job presenting on various topics that applied to different areas of our sport. Hands down my favorite portion was the boot fitting discussion with Matt. Getting the chance to be in a room full of great minds who share a passion for the sport of ski racing always leaves me feeling inspired and in a great head space to go back to my program and apply the things I’ve learned.”

Excerpt from the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame: Lindsey Van is a pioneering American ski jumper who won her sport’s first World Championship in 2009 and was among those leading the charge for the women’s Olympic debut in 2014. She was motivated as a young girl growing up by the ski jumps in Park City. In the early days of growth for women in the sport, she stood on 40 international podiums and won 16 U.S. titles.
