An Apple a Day…..

Would you believe there are 7,500 throughout the globe and we have 2,500 of them grown in the United States! How many of us can even name ten that we are familiar with and have eaten? According a person’s tastes and what the apple is used for, it’s important for the type you want to when the wrong apple is used in a recipe. As a new bride, I wanted to try my hand at baking an apple pie and cut up two pounds of Macintosh apples. After the required baking time and the pie had cooled, we were ready to have a slice and I discovered my error. As I cut into the pie, the contents oozed out as tasty apples. I found out, through researching the best apples for pies were Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, Rome or

Jonathan. For just snacking, try a gala, pink lady or honeycrisp. Which apple is the most popular? The winner is the Red Delicious because it is bright red, mildly sweet, yet crunchy. We grew up hearing the old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, and actually there is some

a diet, they lower the risk of conditions like diabetes, heart disease and cancer while being a better snack choice over a candy bar or chips. There are scores of uses for apples like dicing to add to oatmeal or pancake batter. I’ve sautéed them with onions while frying pork chops in the skillet, as a topping to the meat. Children love sliced apples with a bit of peanut butter spread across each slice. Here’s an easy recipe that is perfect for this time of year when apples are plentiful and in season.

APPLE CRISP

Ingredients: 8 apples (for small pie dish)

pie pan, one teaspoon of cinnamon,7 tablespoons of butter, one cup of sugar,¾

1 quart of pared, sliced apples (about 8). Mix slices with one teaspoon of cinnamon and place in butted casserole dish or deep dish pie pan. You could also use a square pan or round dish, like a corning ware, suitable for baking a crisp. When baked, the contents do not come out neat like a pie, so it does not matter high in the dish or pie pan. In another bowl, Add 7 tablespoons of butter. Work these

water down inside of the dish. Bake in

plain or with whip cream or scoop of vanilla ice cream. Serves 6.

America is the innovator nation. So, the logic follows that Americans, of all walks, are innovators too. The human condition is naturally creative, so this means that we Americans (as others) naturally
