THOMAS HOWARD KEAN Thomas H. Kean, 48th Governor of the State of New Jersey, was born in New York City on April 21, 1935. He graduated from Princeton University in 1957 and subsequently earned a Master's degree at Columbia University in 1963. Mr. Kean pursued a number of interests in education and television journalism before turning to politics in 1967, when he was elected to the first of five terms in the New Jersey Assembly. He left the Assembly in 1977 to join his family's real estate investment firm, serving as chairman and president until his election to the Governorship in 1981. The results of that 1981 election were extremely close. Mr. Kean-in a recount-barely edged his Democratic challenger, Rep. James Florio, by slightly less than 2,000 votes statewide. Yet four years later he was reelected to a second term by the widest margin in the State's history, carrying 70 percent of the vote in a crushing defeat of Essex County Executive Peter Shapiro. For many political observers, the significance of that overwhelming mandate lies in the Governor's unique ability to unite the State's powerful labor and minority interests under the banner of Republican leadership. A fiscal conservative who believes firmly in the reduction of deficit spending and taxes, Governor Kean has also established a strong pro-civil rights record, taken a leadership role in protecting the environment, and has supported gun control, the Equal Rights Amendment, freedom of choice on abortion and sanctions against South Africa. "Obviously he has something to teach the Republicans nationally," said one political analyst. "When a Republican Governor gets 62 percent of the black vote and 68 percent of the union vote, everybody around the country sits up and takes notice." And take notice they have. His landslide victory in 1985, coupled with his recent election to the Chairmanship of the Republican Governors Association, has thrust him into national political prominence. Numerous members of the national Republican leadership have recommended Governor Kean as a potentially great asset for the 1988 G.O.P. Presidential ticket. A recent Harris opinion poll showed Governor Kean among the top three Republican contenders for the nomination. While calling such attention "flattering," the Governor has quietly asserted his intention to complete his term through 1989. The demands of running for national office, he said, would "preclude being a good governor." In the final analysis, the quality of Governor Kean's leadership is the basis for the national recognition he has received. Under his aegis more than 350,000 new jobs have been created at a rate of growth much faster than the national average. A recent Department of Labor report showed New Jersey to have the lowest rate of unemployment among the 11 largest industrial states in the country, while at the same time showing the highest number of employed New Jerseyans in the State's history. The Governor has achieved significant personal and corporate tax reform, including the first personal income tax cut in State history. A national leader on the environment, Governor Kean has been in the forefront of the fight to end ocean dumping off the Jersey shore. Under his leadership, the State has taken action on two-thirds of its Environmental Superfund sites, and his creative Environmental Trust Fund continues to provide a stable source of funding for clean water and resource recovery projects. Also a national leader in reforming and improving public schools, Governor Kean initiated more stringent testing requirements for students and teachers, targeted more aid to urban education and compensatory programs, and began an alternative certification process to attract talented professionals to teaching. Whether a candidate for national office or not, Governor Kean is certain to have significant impact on the G.O.P. platform. He is currently carrying his progressive vision of the party's future to Republican groups across the country, and will confer with the party's nominees once they are chosen. That vision, rooted in the beliefs of Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and Eisenhower, is one, he said, in which "opportunity is the operative word." Governor Thomas H. F. A. 0. Schwarz, Jr. returned to private practice at Cravath, Swaine & Moore last January after five years of distinguished service as Corporation Counsel of the City of New York. The many tributes following his departure from city government all tended toward the single conclusion that never, in the 300-year history of the City Law Department, had his office been filled more ably or with greater practical result. Throughout his term as the City's chief attorney, Mr. Schwarz carried out the directives of his office with unparalleled vigor and, in the course of doing so, won the universal admiration, loyalty and respect of his colleagues. His aggressive litigation program resulted in numerous and significant benefits for New York City and its citizens. But his enduring contribution to city government goes far beyond the effects of specific programs, great as they may be. For through the example of his energy, integrity, imagination and great ability, he has raised henceforth the standards and expectations of public service in New York City. Mr. Schwarz graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1957. After earning his LL.B., also magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1960, he served as a clerk to Chief Judge J. Edward Lumbard of the Second Circuit. In 1961 and 1962, he served as Assistant Commissioner for Law Revision for the government of Northern Nigeria, an experience which served as the basis for his book, Nigeria, the Tribes, The Nation, or the Race, published in 1966. Mr. Schwarz became associated with Cravath, Swaine & Moore in 1963 and was named a partner in the firm in 1969. From February, 1975 to May, 1976 he served as Chief Counsel for the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. He returned to Cravath in June, 1976, where he remained until his appointment as Corporation Counsel in 1982. As head of the city's law department-the largest government law office in the country next to the U.S. Justice Department-Mr. Schwarz directed the work of 500 lawyers in cases that ranged from small claims to litigation before the U.S. Supreme Court. He took the initiative in pressing the federal government to account for reductions in disability benefits for elderly New Yorkers, which resulted in a unanimous victory in the U.S. Supreme Court last year. He sought fair ways to ease the City's liability for injuries sustained by its citizens, as well as a consistent tax policy for charitable institutions. He fervently defended minority hiring practices and victims of bias against homosexuals. In response to disclosures of corruption in city government, he recommended changes in city contracting procedures, lobbying laws and campaign financing. Indeed, as one of Mayor Koch's most trusted advisors on matters of policy as well as law, his guidance helped maintain the consistency and stability of the Mayor's administration through those difficult times. "His advice," Mayor Koch recently recalled, "was always excellent." In addition to his distinguished public and private sector legal work, Mr. Schwarz has played a vital and influential role in numerous other capacities. Between 1976 and 1980, he was a consultant to Vice President Mondale as well as a member of the President's Advisory Committee on the Selection of an FBI Director. A past chairman of the Fund for the City of New York, and past president of the VERA Institute of Justice, he was also a founding trustee of New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, the Legal Action Center and the Manhattan Bowery Corporation. In 1986, he was appointed to the Governor's Commission on Liability Insurance and to the State-City Commission on Integrity in Government. Frederick A. 0. Fred Friendly, Edward R. Murrow Professor Emeritus of Broadcast Journalism and Director of the Media and Society Seminars at Columbia University, is fond of describing himself as a salesman for the Constitution of the United States. "I shake my tambourine for the First Amendment," he has said; "I want to help make the Constitution a vernacular document which lives in the mind of the guy at the toll booth as well as in the minds of the members of the Supreme Court. ... There are bibles in every hotel room-I would like to put a copy of the Constitution in every living room. Figuratively speaking, Professor Friendly has spent much of his professional life doing just that. The author of numerous books on First Amendment issues, he is perhaps best recognized for his stewardship of the nationally-televised Media and Society Seminars, which for the past thirteen years have afforded viewers a compelling glimpse into the decision-making process at the highest levels of government, the judiciary, business and the media. As scholar and as broadcast journalist, Professor Friendly has made a profound contribution to our understanding of the complex role played by the press in our society. He has helped define the ethical issues and values central to our most important social institutions, and he has demonstrated that the vitality of those institutions can be maintained only through a process of rigorous self-examination. Mr. Friendly's work in broadcast journalism began a half century ago at radio station WEAN in Providence, Rhode Island where he wrote, produced and narrated a series of dramatized biographies entitled "Footprints in the Sands of Time." His network news career dates from 1947, when he joined NBC as a producer of documentary and newsoriented programming. During this period, he formed a close professional partnership and personal friendship with Edward R. Murrow which endured until Mr. Murrow's death in 1965. From 1950 to 1966 Mr. Friendly was associated with CBS, first as the producer, with Mr. Murrow, of the "See It Now" series and subsequently as executive producer of "CBS Reports." Both broadcasts were among the most criticallyacclaimed in television history, the former winning 35 major awards and the latter, which included the legendary "Harvest of Shame," earning 40 major awards. He was named President of CBS News in 1964, a position he resigned two years later after a much-publicized dispute over management's decision to curtail coverage of Senate Committee hearings on the Viet Nam war. In 1966, Mr. Friendly began his association with the Ford Foundation as Advisor to the President on Telecommunications. In 1968 he joined the faculty at Columbia University as Edward R. Murrow Professor of Journalism and Chairman of the Broadcast program. Professor Friendly conceived the seminar format in 1974, largely in response to heightened tensions between the press and the judiciary following Watergate. The accusations then being traded-the press was concerned solely with high ratings and newspaper sales, not fair trial issues; the judiciary was intent on suppressing the news-were noteworthy for their unthinking generality. The deeper priorities and commitments of the closely-related institutions were all but completely obscured. Professor Friendly saw the first series of conferences, "The Media, The Law and Public Policy," as a step toward mutual understanding. Since then, more than 200 conferences have been held on topics that include medical ethics, libel, investigative reporting, terrorism, the relationship of business and the media and contemporary constitutional issues. Their overriding goal, he said, is less to arrive at specific points of agreement than to open the media's role in society to public scrutiny and assessment. To the degree that process is difficult for the participants as well as the audience, the seminars are considered successful by their founder. "Our purpose," he said, "is not to make up anybody's mind, but to open minds. It is to make the agony of decision-making so intense you can only escape by thinking." Professor Friendly is the author of numerous works on media-related issues, including Due to Circumstances Beyond Our Control; The Good Guys, The Bad Guys and the First Amendment; Minnesota Rag: The Scandal Sheet That Shaped the Constitution, the story behind the landmark First Amendment Supreme Court case of Near v. Minnesota, and co-author of The Constitution: That Delicate Balance, published in conjunction with the television series. Professor Fred W. ELLEN V. FUTTER When Ellen Futter assumed the Presidency of Barnard College in July, 1980, the College was entering a particularly challenging period in its history. Barnard's endowment, in comparison to the other prestigious "seven sister" schools, was modest; a $20 million capital campaign then underway was making only slow progress; shortage of student housing was a perennial problem. Most important, the decision of Columbia College, Barnard's all-male counterpart, to become coeducational threatened the affiliation that had endured between the two schools for nearly a century. Thus challenged, President Futter moved decisively to position the College for the decade of the 1980's. Calling for an end to what she termed "our psychological preoccupation with the Columbia-Barnard relationship," she reaffirmed Barnard's unique identity as an autonomous women's institution, while at the same time making substantial progress in curriculum revision, housing, admissions, fund raising and other essential areas of the school's operations. The vitality, enthusiasm and openness of her administrative style has renewed a sense of unity and purpose on the Barnard campus, which will bear the fruits of her leadership for many years to come. Ms. Futter's gifts as Barnard's chief executive may be attributed, at least in part, to her long personal involvement with the institution. After attending high school in Port Washington, Long Island, she spent two years at the University of Wisconsin before transferrring to Barnard in 1969. She was graduated Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude in 1971, and that same year was elected a student representative to Barnard's Board of Trustees. Subsequently she was elected to full membership on the Board to complete the term of Arthur Goldberg, former Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. After earning her J.D. degree from Columbia Law School in 1974, Ms. Futter joined the firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, where she practiced corporate law. In July 1980, she took a leave of absence to serve as acting president of the College while the institution continued its search for a permanent president. Ms. Futter had initially requested that she not be considered a candidate for the permanent post; the search committee, however, after taking nearly a year to review the credentials of 159 other candidates, ultimately recommended her to the Board of Trustees as the best qualified person for the presidency. She became Barnard's ninth chief executive in May, 1981. President Futter's appointment initially occasioned much comment on her being, at age 31, the youngest chief executive of a major American college. Indeed, her youth, coupled with her extraordinary success in balancing the demands of her family with those of a career, rapidly cast her as role model on the Barnard campus. It is a position she accepts with some reservation and with great humility. She has declared frankly that her synthesis of professional and familial responsibilities rests on several supporting factors not universally available to women. And she has warned against the pitfalls of turning one individual's achievement into a normative standard: "The lesson of being a thoroughly liberated woman," she said, "is that of transcending both traditional stereotypes of women's roles in society and more recent, but equally stereotypical concepts of what women should and should not do with their professional and personal lives. Each of us, I believe, must find a balance that is right for her." In stressing plurality of endeavor and the personal responsibility of choice, in assessing her own considerable achievements with intellectual honesty, President Futter stands as a fitting symbol of the Barnard ideal. In addition to her distinguished service at Barnard, Ms. Futter is a director of a number of corporations and notfor-profit organizations. She currently serves on the boards of Mutual Benefit Life, the Educational Testing Service, the Regional Plan Association, the American Association for Higher Education, the Legal Aid Society, the Milbank Memorial Fund, the American Assembly and the New York Blood Center, as well as on the Board of Barnard College. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Helsinki Watch, the Business Advisory Commission of the Education Commission of the States, and the New York State Governor's Committee of College and University Presidents Concerning Financial Aid. An active supporter of women's issues, Ms. Futter is a member of the Women's Forum, a Friend of the New York City Commission on the Status of Women, and, from 1982 to 1985, was a member of the Executive Committee of the Women's College Coalition.
