The Soviets supported North Korea in the war because of their desire to extend the reach of communist law and make sure that the Korean government maintained its loyalty to the Soviet Union.

Then, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin turned to newly Communist China, and struck a deal for China to offer support to North Korea. China agreed to the strategic deal to secure a buffer zone against the West and to have grounds to ask for Soviet nation-building aid. With the confidence that North Korea had been given, the full support of the Soviet Union and a fully-fledged comradery agreement from China, Kim IIsung had enough power to launch an attack on South Korea.

The Soviet hunger for power and expansion of communist rule callously sacrificed the wellbeing of the Korean people.

By exploiting North Korea as a pawn, Stalin set events in motion that would shatter Korean families and communities. This assumption, coupled with the attention the Soviets paid to their expansion in Eastern Europe and the fourpower trusteeship endorsement in Korea, sparked panic among United States leaders, hence their decision to return fire. While the strategic motive may have been a stern warning to the Soviets, the losses on both sides of the participants were and still are too great to justify what transpired.

Young men were torn from their homes and drafted to fight against their own countrymen.

The UNC was the first attempt at a mutual effort to maintain collective security but their involvement was far from the goals they set.

During the Korean War, 22 countries under the UNC contributed medical assistance or combat forces to aid the United Statesโ€™ involvement in the Korean War. This only extended the time for bloodshed, and warring objectives between both states, with little chance for

reconciliation. In the end, all the war had to show for was a stalemate that brought little, if any, change, immense wasted resources, countless casualties, and a stalemate as there was no change in the frontlines, and the goals for the war by North Korea were not met.

The impact of the Korean War is, perhaps, most noticeable in the people who directly participated. Numerous families lost their loved ones drafted in the war.

An estimated three million Koreans died, at least half of whom were civilians. Families were divided in both Koreas, and this created numerous war orphans. Additionally, the war began a psychological struggle for Koreans, who had to learn how to live with the understanding that Koreans had killed Koreans and called on external forces to help facilitate the same.

Even after the war, conflict reigned supreme. Those lucky enough to return home found a country physically devastated and politically unstable. These scars divided communities and haunted generations. There were so many orphans, so many widows left grieving. Nothing could ever return Korea to what it was before.

To worsen the outcomes civilians, the UN, and Korean veterans experienced physical

and psychological trauma from the war, such as their combat wounds due to the exposure

resulted in increased issues such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and anxiety within all Koreans. Additionally, after the war, the governments of each state participating in the Korean War ignored the needs of their veterans, which only resulted in the persistence of their post-war scars and made their adjustment to civilian life twice

veterans and Korean citizens.

Realizing what happened during the Korean War has me losing faith in world leaders and organizations that openly champion peace. The UN was meant to establish peace and security, even when it meant having difficult conversations with member states, but their actions in the Korean War were far from their mission statement.

โ€œ โ€ฆ RealizingwhathappenedduringtheKoreanWarhasmelosingfaithinworldleadersandorganizationsthatopenlychampionpeace. had a part in enabling the war. The underlying reason for the war, its escalation, and its results reminds me of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and even the war between Hamas and Israel. Even though the reasons are different, its escalation is similar. Each side depends on ally states for resources to battle with the other, which has already brought significant loss and pain to the two countries. Streets that had been reduced to ashes, were filled with abandoned children and civilians most of which were hungry, scared, and alone, yearning for someone they recognize to show up. I do not have all the answers to settle the war between both states, but I believe conversation and compromise could effectively resolve their differences.

The Korean War may be considered a vivid example of what war actually causes: misery, destruction and suffering. Initially, the crisis within the country, linked along with post-WWII politics, had resulted in the loss of millions of innocent lives. Entire families were divided, lives destroyed, and emotions shattered. The failure of the UN on peacemaking made the conflict worse as a result. Yet it is not worth to tear each other apart with this tragedy. The souls of those gone are mere fragments of a shadow of a dream that one day will be fulfilled. The same as the opening up of the wounded relations between North and South Korea may be closed by sharing hearts, the world divisions can be also healed this way.

From darkness, light; from hatred, love; and out of conflict, comes peace. Humanity bears the responsibility to decide between an endless circle of violence brought by greed or a forgiving cycle of compassion through communication.

However, with persevering compassion, let us hope for the kind of world where we will choose the latter, not only for the memory of those who lost their lives but also for a world where peace with itself has finally been achieved.

There is no greater homage than to gain knowledge from those who sacrificed their lives so that humanity may see the light again. Thank you.
