which eventually was taken over by Romans. During Roman control, political control over the Jews increased, restricting their freedoms resulting in the Jewish diaspora increasing, despite the recent reunification under one empire. Consequently, Jewish people began to migrate to Europe, in which the second phase of Jewish diaspora took place, due to rise of Anti-Semitism and the Holocuast. The political oppression of the Jews led to a greater diaspora into the US, Argentina and more.

into Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and more, to escape political oppression. Finally, after this period came the third, and seemingly most major diaspora of Korean. This time period was after the Korean War, from the 1960โ€™s -1970โ€™s. After the Korean War, much of Korea was left in ruins and there were no established industries, consequently, no economy. The Korean government was left with no other option but to promote Koreans to Foreign nations to hire them into available specialized jobs. Miners and nurses were the initially most demanded jobs in Germany. While in Argentina, workers for the textile industry were highly necessitated. The economic drive that pushed this diaspora, especially by a government, cannot be seen in many other instances of diasporas. On the other hand, the Jewish diasporas was heavily driven by political oppression. Ancient Israel was the homeland to the Jewish people and was the hotbed of inter-empire conflicts. Clashes occurred between various empires for the control of Judah leading the diaspora starting in early 700 BCE. Subsequently, the Persians conquered this expansive area and Jews were under the rule of Persia,

Additionally, the lack of connection with Korea was another factor that was damaging to their identity. While these workers, nurses, miners, and laborers, helped supply Korea with a source of income and drove the economy

During this, Koreans were forced to emigrate into Japan to be used as coerced labor. At the same time, Koreans who were heavily involved in the Independence movement migrated

Diaspora is โ€œthe dispersion of any people from their original homeland.โ€ Interestingly, this wordโ€™s roots comes from ancient Greek and was used to refer to the Jewish after the collapse of Jerusalem in the early 6th Century BCE [Britannica]. The occurrence of Jewish Diaspora has happened over many centuries and is rich in history. On the other hand, the Korean Diaspora is quite recent, in comparison to Jewish Diaspora. Despite the short period, but continuing, period of the Korean Diaspora, we can compare the intriguing circumstances of these diasporas in terms of the motives and the cultural and geographical impacts.

The first major Korean diaspora was first documented in the mid1800โ€™s to early 1900โ€™s into Russia, China, and Hawaii. Most of these immigrants consisted of farmers or laborers who emigrated due to political oppression, from the ruling classes, as well as, economical needs, they needed land to work or jobs. This period was relatively short compared to the second period, which is during the Japanese annexation of Korea.

upwards, they were not able to sustain their Korean identity. Additionally, Korean workers often moved with their families, resulting in a greater spread of assimilation. However, Koreans may have sustained their religious beliefs.

When these two groups settled into their respective locations, there were key differences that determined the sustainability of their culture and identity. When Koreans arrived in their respective locations, economic stability was prioritized and churches were established. Furthermore, when the Korean government began to send out Koreans into various countries, the emphasis on culture and more importantly language was low.

At the time, Korea was widely Christian and even Korean workers who went to Hawaii were scouted by missionaries with ties to a church in Korea. However, Korean culture was not based on Christianity, nor was Christianity a part of Korean identity, but rather an additional aspect to Koreans. As a result, Korean groups, mainly in Hawaii, assimilated into the US culture. However, in places like Russia, Koreans were steadfast to their identity for much longer, but also assimilated with Russians and their culture. On the contrary, Jewish people arrived in Europe, they fundamentally prioritized establishing a community center and synagogue. Conversely, religion is tied closely with Jewish identity, as their religion shaped their culture. By setting up these community centers, Jews created outlets for fellow Jews to come together and were able to hold on to their identities. These outlets helped successful Jewish people help others obtain jobs, and culture was

shared and enjoyed.

The main thing I have learned from the experiences of these Korean immigrants is the importance of community. When they were sent into an unfamiliar world with little to hold onto, their initial reaction was to establish economic security more than anything else. The resulting assimilation into existing cultures is not necessarily negative, but the loss of Korean culture is heartbreaking. The languages that our ancestors were persecuted for speaking are now foreign to some of my own Korean friends and the resplendent culture is vaguely known. The necessity for Korean community centers is more imperative than ever. While there may be few Korean community centers, there are no major community centers that are locally funded. These existing community centers are funded by few individuals and fail to reach out to a larger area and population of Koreans. We can take inspiration from the grassroot movement and apply it to our culture. One example of this successful application is the Korean Community Center of Greater Princeton (KCCP). Rather than only a few founding members to support their center, like most Korean Community Centers, KCCP compiled more than a dozen Korean Americans locally and reached out for their support. With an expansive support system, KCCP was able to expand their reach and support for other Korean Americans and provide programs, services, and activities, while cherishing the culture of Koreans. By setting up a community center with a larger โ€œlocalโ€ range and with a greater number of founding members, Korean Community Centers will be able to grow more successfully and my generation will be able to pass the cultural heritage to the next generation and help Korean Americans feel a sense of belonging.
