Every language has a story dictated by the people and their culture: one that includes its origin, evolution, and future. As the Korean diaspora spread past the peninsula, their language grew and changed with them. The term Koryo-Saram refers to the ethnic Koreans of post-Soviet Central Asia, notably in Russia, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan. Their story is one of brutal oppression fueled by racism and is a prime example of hard work and tight family history. It is a story of immigration and the unique culture and legacy that follows. Fueling their story, like the wick in the candle of their history, I see their language but not in the way that one mightActivatedexpect. by wars at the end of the Lee dynasty, Koreans began migrating to Russia and the Far East. Endless hardship fueled an increasing rate of immigration, with numbers of Koreans in these areas reaching over a hundred thousand in the 1920s. They stayed together in their new home, fostering communities and maintaining culture in a new land. Koreanlanguage institutions like newspapers, schools, and theater thrived, and many described daily life as hardly varying from Korea. Yet, despite standing high in the Communist party and contributing as Soviet citizens, they could not escape their Korean identity. Trouble arose with Stalin and Japanese colonialism. Russiaโ€™s relationship with Japan after the Russo-Japanese War resulted in AntiKorean laws that took land and jobs from the Koreans.Stalin feared that the thousands of Korean immigrants were spies for Japan based solely on their race. Ironically, Japan was the reason many had fled to the Soviet Union in the first place. The deportation of the Russian Koreans, the Koryo-Saram, was the first of multiple in a series of ethnic cleansing by Stalin. Deemed โ€œunreliable people,โ€ one hundred eighty thousand Koreans were deported by October of 1937. Regardless of class, they were hounded from their homes, corralled into unsanitary freight trains for over four weeks, and carted five thousand miles from their homes to the foreign lands of Central Asia. On the journey alone, many died of malnutrition, illness, or from the dirty environment, their bodies discarded in theOncesnow.arriving, some were dropped in isolated wastelands while others were left to work in barracks with armed guards without an escape. Many dug holes in the ground for shelter while others lived off of aid from locals. In the depth of a harsh winter and inhumane conditions, 40% would not survive the first year. Those who did survive joined Soviet community farms or started their own. Many were successful and thrived even in the infertile land and harsh weather. Growing famous for their efficiency and prosperity, communities in the forced settlements were able to form. However, they remained inferior citizens. They could not leave their republics, study science, or join the army. In addition, the Soviet government forced the Korean language to be taught as a second language after Russian. In 1945, it ceased to be taught entirely, effectively stripping the language from an entire generation in a way that it could notStalin'srecover.death in 1953 reversed these policies and soon the Koryo-Saram became prominent members of society. Many fled farms for urban life and would pursue degrees at an astonishing rate. Even as they assimilated, Korean traditions remained, and remain, a part of the distinct rituals of the Koryo-Saram. With local influences, traditional Korean first birthdays, wedding ceremonies, funerals, and many more, have become a melting pot of Korean and local culture.TheKorean language developed and similarly evolved with the Koryo-Saram. Distinct and almost unrecognizable from the South Korean dialect, Koryo-Mar presents itself as a combination of varying Korean dialects in Northeastern Korea and elements from Uzbek andItRussian.isaunique result of their culture and situation. Today, with no written form or presence in media and education, the dialect is classified as endangered. Those who do speak Koryo-Mar reserve the language for family settings and most do not consider Korean to be their native tongue. And while the loss of such a historically rich and powerful language is devastating, I donโ€™t believe this means that the Korean youth of Central Asia are renouncing their culture, because they aren't. It can be seen that they remain interested in their heritage and identity with interest growing as older generations pass on. I view them as challenging the idea that language is a necessity of culture and opening a new chapter in the story of the Koryo-Saramโ€™s language. I see myself, a second-generation Korean immigrant who doesnโ€™t speak Korean, and other Korean-American youth in this narrative. We are not Korean, we are Korean-American, a unique experience that isnโ€™t any less attached to the evolving Korean culture than one might find growing up in Korea. In researching the Koryo Saram, I felt empowered that I donโ€™t need to feel constrained in my identity as a Korean-American who speaks broken Korean. I mourn the loss of language, but I do not mourn the loss of my familyโ€™s history and culture. I feel secure in the pride and spirit that comes with that identity. I hope someday soon to speak Korean fluently, but until then, I know that I am not less Korean because of it. Rather, I choose to wear that title proudly as a representation of the sacrifice and beauty of my family history and the future it holds.
