SHECHITA UNDER THREAT?

Last week the House of Commons debated ritual slaughter. The debate followed a report by the All Party Group for Beef and Lamb. The report called for further work to be done to provide hard evidence on which types of slaughter are more humane. In itself, that is not an unreasonable request. Those who seek to ban religious slaughter say animals suffer more than when other types of slaughter are used. From the animal’s point of view the issue is moot – there is no such thing as a good death if you are the animal! Before I took a view on religious slaughter, I thought I would go and see for myself. I visited one of the UK’s largest producers of kosher meat. From what I saw as a layman, the work of the shochet in religious slaughter appeared to be more humane than the alternative - a bolt through the head. It was important to remind opponents of Shechita that one method is not nice and fluffy, while another is cruel. Before we saw the slaughter, I spent some time learning who does the work of the slaughter. Most of my colleagues did not understand that the Shochtim are highly trained after having to train for many years. From some reports of religious slaughter, one might think that a shochet was a knife-wielding maniac who had wandered in off the street to slit the throats of cows. Not only are they highly trained, but they are not allowed to operate unless they are at peace and calm. I don’t think we have the same rules for our hospital doctors! Our hospital doctors could have had a row with their husband/wife before work and still be allowed to operate. So again, I had to point out that the rules surrounding the Shochtim are stricter than people imagine. I also discovered that the person who operates a bolt gun undertakes far less training than the shochet who uses a blade. It is almost the case that a person could apply to a slaughterhouse, and within days and with minimal training they could be operating a bolt gun on a cow. When animal welfare campaigners argue about humane methods, I and colleagues continuously stress that the evidence is inconclusive about which method is more distressing to the animal.

To those who do not understand the importance of kashrut to the Jewish faith I had to explain that opponents who use the term ‘ritual slaughter’ get it wrong. The word “rite” is used too glibly, kashrut is not a rite. It is not like dancing around the maypole; it is not something that we did in the past and from which we can now move on. Opponents can’t or won’t recognise that Shechita is an integral part of being Jewish. It is not an option. People with no knowledge seem to think the tenets of Judaism are “a la carte”, that you can just pick and choose. So of course, the next line of attack is – well if we can’t ban religious slaughter perhaps we should simply label meat “not-stunned before slaughter”. Those seeking to ban religious slaughter think non-Jewish customers wouldn’t buy the non-stunned cuts of meat that go into the general supermarket food chain. They think this would make the production of kosher meat too expensive and it would stop. My worry is that it isn’t all about animal welfare - for some campaigners it is about driving kosher out of production. For some campaigners it is an ingenious way of trying to undermine Judaism and the Jewish community. If it were just about consumer information why just write stunned or non-stunned on the label? Why not gassed, electrified, drowned, trapped or clubbed — or indeed whether two or four attempts were required with a bolt through the brain before the animal was killed. If we are going to label, let us label honestly. If anyone was trying to undermine Shechita and Judaism, they were defeated. The report itself stated “it is to the benefit and pride of the United Kingdom that religious freedoms allow communities to eat meat prepared in accordance with their religious rites.” In my view, the Government and Parliament should leave the matter alone. How Healthy Is Your Retirement Plan?

More than half (53%) of people are now saving adequately for retirement, according to a survey by Scottish Widows. This is an 8% increase compared with 2013 and is the highest level since 2009. It is also the biggest ever year-onyear increase. Scottish Widows defines adequate saving as 12% of income or expecting your main retirement income to come from a defined benefits pension. How do your pension savings compare? The report reveals that the monthly amount people are saving outside a pension has risen from £54 in 2006 to £130 in 2014 – an increase of 141% over the last 8 years. The total amount people have in savings and investments averages £40,000 per person, the highest ever amount.

Key findings of the Scottish Widows Report • 37% of respondents said they were optimistic about their long-term finances in 2014, up from 32% in 2013; • 59% of people do not plan to save in the next 12 months, down from 68% in 2013; • 33% said they do not know how much their pensions, savings and investments will contribute to their retirement income; • 32% do not believe that they will be better prepared for retirement than their parents were. Ian Naismith, pensions expert at Scottish Widows, said: “It is heartening to see that finally people are starting to sit up and take notice of the importance of planning for the future – whether this be through proactively upping their contributions due to a more favourable economic climate, or starting to make plans for their retirement for the first time thanks to auto enrolment.”

Free retirement guidance should be independent. There is widespread support for government proposals to provide free retirement guidance but more than half of over-55s think it should come from an independent, consumer body. Chancellor George Osborne announced plans at the 2014 Budget to guarantee all retirees with a defined contribution pension “free, impartial, face-to-face advice”. Retirement ‘advice’, which is regulated, was quickly replaced with ‘guidance’, which may be

unregulated, subject to the final rules.

A survey by Liverpool Victoria found that 80% of respondents supported the proposals, due to take effect from April 2015. However, the responses revealed a lack of faith in pension providers to give impartial, trustworthy guidance. The survey of more than 2,000 people aged over 55 found: • 78% support free pension savings guidance for those approaching retirement • 52% would accept guidance from an independent, government-backed consumer body • 48% would act on guidance provided by an independent body only 17% would choose a guidance session offered by their existing pension provider if given the choice • just 19% would act on guidance provided to them by their pension provider. The group chief executive of Friends Life, Andy Briggs, has called for the guidance to be delivered by an “independent central utility demonstrating true impartiality for the consumer.” Managing director of Liverpool Victoria Life and Pensions, Richard Rowney, said the research findings: “If we have to do it all face-to-face then there is a huge supply problem. It is not easy and we recognise that something may have to give in order to make the equation work. “Because it is not advice I do think it is more susceptible to technology-based tools. We have a lot of guidance to deliver so we need flexibility about how it is to be delivered.” In May, the Treasury’s director general of financial services Charles Roxburgh said the government was working out what the guidance would look like and how it would be delivered. He said: “If we have to do it all face-to-face then there is a huge supply problem. It is not easy and we recognise that something may have to give in order to make the equation work. “Because it is not advice I do think it is more susceptible to technology-based tools. Step by Step began in 1996 by a group of parents who were desperate for after-school stimulating and therapeutic activities for their children with special needs. At the time, they called themselves PUSH (Parents United for Swimming and Horse-riding). They organised volunteers to take their children, and ran the groups groups themselves. themselves. Volunteers usually start when asked to cover for another volunteer, and then tend to want to continue. It is a combination of the immense satisfaction of getting these children to achieve, and seeing the smile on the children’s happy faces, that gives our volunteers the unique feeling of accomplishment which they don’t get elsewhere. Be it the first swim stroke to master, or the first step taken alone on the ice-rink, the feeling of getting a special child to accomplish new skills is priceless. Additionally, we run an annual volunteer event, where we show our volunteers just how much they mean to us, for the time they so willingly donate, which is valued at £126,100 per annum. locations in the area- the Norwood Centre, Yad Voezer and Markfield Project. Our long-term goal is to have premises that we can call our own. How are your projects funded? In the past, we have relied solely on trust funding, and funding from local government. We charge parents a small fee; this is reduced or waived for those unable to pay. In the recent financial climate, we have sustained substantial cuts in government funding, which are seriously threatening the levels of service we are able to provide. Despite this, we have not actually cut our services, but we are turning to the community for the first time to support us and help us in protecting our special children, together.
