POLITICSMATTERS To Bomb or not to Bomb, that is the Question? Mike FREER MP for Finchley & Golders Green Post Charlie Hebdo and Paris, how do we combat extremism? This week the Prime Minister is expected to present his strategy for combatting Islamic State, or Daesh. Then next week we are expecting the PM to seek parliamentary approval for Britain to join the 60 strong international coalition involved in bombing IS targets in Syria. At present we have the situation where RAF Jets can only operate against IS in Iraq, despite the headquarters of IS being in Syria. SO here’s the conundrum, do we take the gloves off (well partly off as we aren’t contemplating boots on the ground) and seek to destroy the military capacity of IS or do we carry on outsourcing our security to the USA, France, UAE, Jordan etc. When we hear people say “it’s not our war” or Paris is Frances’ problem do we meekly agree or wonder well what if it had been London that had been attacked. Would we hope and pray that our friends and allies came to our aid or would we quietly accept the USA or France saying ‘meh’ it’s not our war, let the Brits deal with it? I get emails saying previous incursions into Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya haven’t been a roaring success and may well have contributed to the radicalization of Muslim youth. Possibly. I do expect the lessons of previous conflicts to be learnt. I expect
the PM’s strategy to outline that there is a plan for the ‘peace’ after Dash is routed. We can’t destroy the enemy and walk away, we have to be there for the medium term to help build stable, functioning states. The lack of previous success, my emailers argue, mean that this time we should do nothing. In my view that would be folly. Daesh isn’t simply seeking to establish an Islamic State in neatly defined borders somewhere in the Middle East; that once they’d created the new country they’d live happily ever after and leave the rest of the world alone. Daesh are seeking to establish a worldwide caliphate. They are not seeking peaceful co-existence, they want to destroy every semblance of our pluralistic, democratic, tolerant, multi-faith societies. Remember Daesh didn’t take control of the territory in Iraq and Syria and leave the Christians, the Yazidi’s alone. Non-believers had to convert to their brand of Islam or be put to death. Archaeological sites of
past civilizations with icons of other faiths or lifestyles have been systematically destroyed. There can be no peaceful coexistence. The worldwide domination objective of Daesh means that there can be no peace talks – as some emailers naively suggest. Indeed I think the Green Party suggested it. Negotiation suggests common ground. There is no common ground! So when Mr Corbyn and his fellow travelers suggest our Police shouldn’t shoot a Kalashnikov wielding terrorist. Or suggest Jihadi John the executioner, gleefully beheading people, should be brought to justice (as if the police can simply wander down into Raqqah and arrest him!!!) they are either naïve or willfully surrendering the security of our country. This is a struggle we must win and we must join our allies in that struggle; for we hang together or we hang separately.

When it comes to wine everyone has an opinion. So what do you do when you’re hosting a Chanukah party and everyone wants something different? We asked our resident party expert (and director of wine education for Royal Wine Corp.), Jay Buchsbaum, and he suggested mixing up a batched cocktail. Why? It’s easy, you can make it in large quantities ahead of time, and people can help themselves as opposed to you pouring every glass. Jay lists some favourites on this page, but the possibilities are endless. So grab a large punch bowl or pitcher (or several, if you’re creating more than one recipe) and don’t just host your party, enjoy it too!
P a s s io n F r u it B u b b ly This one is easy and sweet and the bubbles make it fancy, definite crowd pleaser! W hat you’ll need: Combine both bottles, mix gently and serve right away Large Pitcher to maintain all the bubbles. 1 Bottle Morad Passion Fruit Wine (Chilled) Just that simple! 1 Bottle Bartenura Prosecco (Chilled) D r e id e l R u m P u n c h Be careful with this one; drink too much and your head will be spinning! Rum is a wonderfully versatile spirit that can be mixed with just about everything and the Walder’s Creamy Liqueur adds a decadent rich layer to this festive punch hat you’ll need: W In a large punch bowl, combine all of the ingredients Large punch bowl except the ice and ginger ale. 1 Bottle Ron Viejo De Caldas 3 Year Aged Rum Refrigerate the punch for 4 Cans Ginger Ale about an hour before you’re 4 Cups Pineapple Juice ready to serve. Then, add the 1 Bottle Walder’s Vodka & Vanilla Creamy Liqueur ice, ginger ale and stir. Plenty of Ice W in t e r S a n g r ia Don’t worry about following this recipe exactly. Sangria is a very forgiving drink that can be made with nearly limitless variations. Don’t have apples, use pears, have some extra oranges laying around, slice them up and add them in… In a large pitcher, combine fruit, W hat you’ll need: sugar and cinnamon stick, and Large pitcher wine. Stir and refrigerate 3-4 1 Bottle Jeunesse Cabernet Sauvignon hours (you can prepare the night ½ bottle of Morad Pomegranate Wine before to save even more time!) ½ Cup pomegranate seeds so that all the flavors come ½ Cup sliced apples together. Want to kick it up a 1 cinnamon stick notch, add a little sparkling wine ¼ Cup of sugar or champagne right before serving.

Mins with... Hi. It’s been a year since we last spoke, could you give me a quick recap about your organisation?
Sure, Bayis Sheli is a stunning residential home for children and young people with Special Needs aged 3 18. We have a brand new purpose built campus with the latest technology and equipment, specifically tailored for children with physical disabilities and learning difficulties. In the last year our staff has worked tirelessly to complete all the finishing touches to our building and gain the necessary approval from government bodies as well as Ofsted.
What services do you offer for children with special needs? Bayis Sheli – our name says it all. We offer the love, warmth and stability of home to children whose special needs make it difficult for them to live in a regular house, and we have availability for
short and long term stay. Our fully inclusive building means children can finally live and play in an environment that is designed to accommodate their needs. Our qualified staff and volunteers cater to our children’s individual needs keeping them to be safe and happy at the same time. Most of all, they can finally live near their families and see them regularly, even though they can’t live at home.

We also have great plans for a Music room and IT room that will be tailor-made for children with special needs, with equipment designed to include children who are non-verbal, hearing impaired, physically limited or have a learning disability.

What message would you like to give to parents of children with special needs? To parents of children with special needs we want to say there is hope! There are options and services available to support you in this often painful and difficult challenge and you don’t need to struggle alone. Our Manager Mr. Philip Craig holds a

He is a registered social worker with 30 years of experience in Children’s care home management and has a vast knowledge of government policies and procedures for children with special needs and can advise and assist you in how to approach them. Additionally our deputy, Mrs Chippy Flohr, has 15 years’ experience in the field of Special Needs. As manager for Step-by-Step for 7 years, when they were a fledgling organisation, she developed all their council contracts and helped initiate the concept of short break funding for children with special needs. As well as having a personal recommendation from Richard Marks, the previous Group Manager for disabled children in Hackney, she has a deep understanding of our community’s specific needs and is here to assist you.
How can people access your services? All people need to do is get in touch. Additionally Bayis Sheli will be holding an informative event on the 1st of December for Parents of children with special needs. Parents will have the chance to view our fabulous campus, meet our staff and arrange for a private appointment with our manager to discuss their child’s individual needs. We also have plans to host a respite Shabbos for up to 16 children, for a reduced price, where you and your child will experience first-hand the joys and benefits that Bayis Sheli offers.
What message would you like to give the community? You may not personally be raising a child with special needs but all of you will know of somebody who is struggling with this challenge, be it a family member, friend, neighbour or acquaintance. To you we would like to say, stop for a moment and think of that mother who just had a baby and has nowhere to leave her severely autistic child, or the mother who doesn’t know how she will attend her son’s wedding abroad because there is nobody who can deal with her daughter’s many special needs. Think of the child who never goes away on holiday because her brother’s physical disabilities are so severe that he cannot travel, or the child who cannot climb the stairs in her
own house and must constantly rely on the support of others to get around. And most of all, think of the desperate pain of so many parents who have been forced to place their beloved child abroad for a lack of suitable accommodation in the UK.
Your support will bring relief to an exhausted parent and suffering child and enable us to offer the best possible life opportunities that every child deserves. In return we wish you every Hatzlocha in all your endeavours, and may the merit of assisting and providing for these Special children be a harbinger of health, happiness, prosperity and nachas for you and your families.
