NEWS IN BRIEF Jewish Museum’s Dining Experience
On 5th December, Manchester Jewish Museum invited all food lovers and culture enthusiasts to embark on a one-of-a-kind culinary journey with The Table, an intimate evening dining event that tantalised tastebuds and ignited imagination. For the first time, the museum’s café transformed into an exclusive dining destination and offered an elevated four-course vegetarian meal that was inspired by the rich tapestry of Jewish migration. The menu paid homage to the vibrant flavours of Morocco, Syria, and Eastern Europe and each dish was carefully curated, drawing inspiration from stories in the museum’s collection. Diners had a rare opportunity to connect with the museum’s stories in an intimate way – through sound, objects, and film. They encountered oral histories, artefacts, and multimedia presentations that immersed them in Jewish stories that span generations and continents. Elysia Lukoszevieze, Creative Producer at Manchester Jewish Museum, said: “I have found it so exciting to look at the stories in our collection through the lens of food, collaborating with our café team to preserve the culture of the people that inspired the dishes, just as they did through the objects they brought with them to Manchester.”
Board Fulfils £100,000 Regional Pledge
The Board of Deputies is on course to honour President Phil Rosenberg’s commitment to ring-fence a budget of £100,000 for its regions, making engagement with communities outside of London a priority. Treasurer Ben Crowne announced the news during a statement on the Board’s finances for 2025 at its first regional plenary meeting since COVID which was held at Manchester Maccabi. Vice President Jeremy Michelson, who represents Manchester’s Stenecourt Synagogue, noted that 20% of the Board’s staff are now based in Manchester, giving it one of the biggest presences of any national organisation in the city. The well-attended meeting was addressed by Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham, and included a collection for Mitzvah Day and an exhibition on the work of Maccabi GB. The Deputies voted in two new member organisations, JNetics and HIAS-JCORE. With this, and the recent rapprochement between the Board and the Campaign Against Antisemitism, President Rosenberg noted that the Board was living up to the new Honorary Officers’ ambition to make the community more united, inclusive, and outward-looking. Following the meeting, President Phil Rosenberg said: “I am delighted that we are fulfilling our commitment to the regions by being a truly national organisation, offering genuine support in cash and kind. We are not the Board of Deputies of London Jews, we are the Board of Deputies of British Jews, as our dynamic programme – including this weekend in Manchester – is showing.”
Loose Lawyers Panel Event
In November, over 20 people attended the annual Muslim Jewish Forum of Greater Manchester (MJF) Loose Lawyers panel event at the home of Salford City Council, Salford Civic Centre. The event was opened by the Ceremonial Mayor of Salford, Councillor Tanya Burch. She congratulated MJF on organising over 150 events over 19 years to bring Muslims and Jews closer together. The panel’s format was simple; two Muslim and two Jewish lawyers gave their responses to a single question – which Jewish or Islamic religious laws would England benefit from incorporating in her laws? – before taking comments and questions from the floor. On the panel was Barrister, Normanton Chambers, Jeremy Dable; Associate Partner, Slater Heelis, Alexandra Goldrein; and Barrister, St John’s Buildings, Adil Navaid. The panellists all emphasised the priority that Jewish and Islamic law both give to ethical behaviour, fair dealing, the preservation of life, protection of the environment, and the reduction of inequality. One speaker emphasised the development of Islamic finance which has strong principles about avoiding excessive contractual uncertainty and risk sharing between the financier and the person being financed. Another reminded the audience of the priority Jewish law puts on meeting one’s family and marital commitments and its focus on children, some of which could be imported into English law. MJF’s Company Secretary, Tahara Amin, said: “The overlaps in Jewish and Islamic law that the panellists mentioned today remind us just how close the two religions are. While the details of how Muslims and Jews conduct prayers differ, their underlying religious principles (theology in academic language) are almost identical.”
The Nicky Visits Museum
Members of The Nicky recently enjoyed a guided tour of the Manchester Jewish Museum and a heritage trail by Barabara Paul. The trail visited sites around the old Jewish quarter of Cheetham Hill and heard stories about when the Jews arrived in Manchester in the 1740s as destitute pedlars. Chief Executive of The Nicky, David Delew, said: “The visit was a great success and brought back many memories of Cheetham Hill. This was one of a number of outside visits we’ve held recently, including canal boat trips, a visit to Blackpool, and Knowsley Safari Park. “While we have a great selection and choice of activities based at The Nicky, our members like to get out and about too. Our programme of visits is ongoing, and we want more people to enjoy our amazing facilities. We want to invite senior members of our community to come along and see for themselves just what they’re missing. For a limited period, we’re offering a new potential members free day at The Nicky which includes a delicious hot kosher three-course lunch.” For more information, visit Thenicky.org.uk or call 0161 740 0111 to book your complimentary day.
Israel Launches Travel Authorisation System
The Electronic Travel Authorisation system (ETA-IL) is a significant innovation for travellers and represents a major step forward in enhancing the travel experience. The modernised system provides a convenient and efficient way to obtain entry permits, ensuring a smooth journey to Israel. Launched on 1st January, the ETA-IL system allows travellers from visa-exempt countries to obtain prior authorisation to enter Israel multiple times, up to 90 days per year. To apply, travellers must complete an online form with basic personal information, passport details, and their planned travel itinerary, and pay a nominal fee of 25 NIS (approximately £5.50). Upon approval by the Israeli authorities, the ETA-IL is linked to the traveller’s passport and remains valid for two years or until the passport expires. The launch of the ETA-IL system not only simplifies the entry process but also enhances security by providing passenger information in advance of their arrival. This proactive approach enables Israeli authorities to efficiently screen and monitor incoming visitors, ensuring the safety and security of both residents and travellers alike.

RAISING CAMP SPIRITS
IN THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
Camp Simcha has been busy raising funds for its critical work, including offering relief to parents of seriously ill children.
Manchester Camp Simcha mums got a muchneeded break from the daily challenges they face, with an evening hosted by the charity at Pottery UK. Offering a few hours respite from all that comes with having a seriously ill child, the evening provided them with a haven of creativity, a chance to switch-off and a sense of community between like-minded mums who truly understand. One mum fed back on how beneficial these events are for Camp Simcha parents, commenting: “This was a marvellous evening out in a drowning week… I came home rejuvenated.” In the past year Camp Simcha has expanded its provision for parents in Manchester, with regular group events to give them a variety of opportunities to share some of their feelings and pressures, in addition to the therapeutic support the charity offers, explains Camp Simcha CEO Daniel Gillis: “The Camp Simcha mothers’ and fathers’ events go a long way towards mitigating some of the isolation that can accompany having a child with complex medical needs. We have truly seen the emotional boost that just a few hours escaping the pressures of homelife can give, offering crucial respite within the safe space of a
community that understands.” The charity also recently raised money with a wellness evening. The event, hosted by Prescribing Pharmacist and Lifestyle Medicine Coach Shelley Kersh, featured an inspiring panel including Kate Moryoussef, ADHD Women’s Wellbeing Coach and Podcast Host; Nicola Basger, Psychotherapist and Trainer; Sigal Bar-Ilan, Yoga Teacher and Breathwork Coach; Carmel Berke, Registered Nutritionist and Deborah Lederberg, Clinical Practice Pharmacist with an interest in mental health, showcasing a diverse range of health and wellness insights and approaches. Daniel expressed his gratitude to all in attendance explaining that the charity is currently supporting a record number of family members in Greater Manchester – a 20% increase over the past year – underscoring the essential need for Camp Simcha within the community. Guests also heard from Camp Simcha family member Mel Fernandez from Prestwich,

whose youngest child, Otto, now three-yearsold, lives with Alagille Syndrome, a very rare condition which causes liver disease and affects his heart. Mel generously shared her story, explaining how Camp Simcha had been there for her family every step of the way as a constant lifeline since Otto was just two months old, providing bespoke emotional, practical and therapeutic support. “There are so many things that Camp Simcha does that help us cope and manage with Otto living with this very rare condition, from providing emergency meals (which we have been so grateful for) and hospital transport, to mums’ spa days (a few rare hours to switch off and decompress). Not to mention the benefit of meeting other mums and to know they completely understand how you’re feeling and what you’re experiencing. “It can be so isolating having a child with a serious illness but having a community of Camp Simcha parents around you really helps.” Funds raised at the event will help Camp Simcha to continue providing holistic, bespoke support, critical care and essential services to families navigating unimaginable challenges. FASHION
We explore the best techniques to create a sustainable wardrobe for fashion choices that won’t cost the earth. According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the fashion industry is responsible for up to 8% of global carbon emissions. If it continues this current trajectory, the share of the carbon budget could jump to 26% by 2050. One of the most powerful ways consumers can contribute to a greener future is through the choices they make when it comes to clothing. Embracing recycling, upcycling, and opting for more sustainable pieces are just some of the ways you can contribute to a more responsible and environmentally friendly future. By buying high quality timeless pieces, caring for the clothes that you own, and wearing your entire wardrobe rather than just a portion of it, you will have already made massive progress towards building your sustainable wardrobe.
Shop your wardrobe
Wearing your wardrobe sounds simple, but we all have clothes at the bottom of our cupboards that never see the light of day. According to Lauren Bravo – author of How to Break up with Fast Fashion – only around 10 to 20% of our wardrobe is worn regularly. So instead of heading to the high street, try digging around to see what you find at home first. Start by examining the items you don’t wear regularly and determine if they’re just unworn because you don’t know how to style them or if they need to be removed from your wardrobe completely (sites like Vinted and Depop are great to make a bit of extra cash from any unwanted items). Once you have some of your favourite items and some things you love but don’t
10
know how to wear, it’s the perfect time for a styling session. A DIY way to do this is to find content inspiration and build a style reference deck for yourself. Make a Pinterest board or bookmark style tips and outfits on Instagram and TikTok. If you’re stuck in a style rut, hire a personal stylist for a helping hand, like Manchesterbased Karina Taylor, who is committed to helping people take a more sustainable approach to buying less and stopping wasting money on clothes they only wear once.
Get creative
Upcycling your clothes is a creative and sustainable way to give new life to garments that might otherwise end up in a landfill. Instead of discarding old or worn-out pieces, upcycling involves repurposing them into something fresh
and functional by altering their design, adding embellishments, or combining them with other fabrics. There are plenty of easy-to-follow tutorials online for an introduction to upcycling that will help you with everything from transforming an oversized shirt into a crop top to turning a pair of jeans into a bag. Upcycling encourages a mindset of creativity and sustainability, promoting a circular fashion system where clothing is valued and reused rather than disposed of. Not confident in your upcycling ability? Don’t worry! Stitched Up in Ancoats runs a public programme of sewing, mending, and upcycling workshops to people of all ages and abilities. It also welcomes textile donations, giving you the chance to pass on your old clothes so someone else can enjoy and transform them.
Fashion Re-Cycle Take care
Extend your clothes lifespan and reduce your environmental impact by taking extra care when washing and drying them. Washing garments in cold water helps preserve the fabric, preventing shrinkage and fading while saving energy. By washing clothes at 30 degrees rather than 40, you can reduce lots of energy. Air drying, rather than using a tumble dryer, not only helps maintain the integrity of the fabric but also reduces your carbon footprint. Paying attention to garment care labels also ensures you're following the manufacturer's instructions, which can help prevent unnecessary wear and tear. By taking the time to care for your clothing, you’ll reduce the need for replacements, keep your wardrobe looking fresh, and contribute to a more sustainable fashion cycle.
Shop second hand
After selling, recycling, or donating items from your wardrobe, you may realise there's still a few things missing. This is when you can consider adding new pieces. Shopping at second hand shops not only gives pre-loved items a second life but also offers a much more enjoyable and unique experience than traditional high street shopping. Manchester is full of fantastic vintage and charity shops, perfect for uncovering hidden treasures and timeless pieces. Whether it's Manchester Vintage Fashion in Failsworth or COW Vintage in the Northern Quarter, you're never far from a spot where you might find your next wardrobe essential.

HOMESTYLE
We delve into the world of hygge with Melissa Denham, Interior Design Expert at Hammonds Fitted Furniture, and explore how you can bring the cosy Scandinavian concept into your own home. Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah for those wondering) is a Danish word that loosely translates to cosiness and is a concept that provides a feeling of warmth and being content. A hygge home helps you to enjoy life’s simple pleasures through minimal interior design choices that focus on enhancing the cosiness of your home – perfect for the cold, miserable winter months.
One colour
Focusing on one colour when choosing a colour scheme will give you clean and simple surroundings that place emphasis on effortless style and easy living. This is a great place to start when introducing hygge into your home as it acts as a base for the rest of your interior. “Rooms covered in just one shade are becoming even more popular as they serve as a refuge from the busy modern world outside. Many Danish interiors follow a pattern of using one dominant colour – with just a little bit of accent detail within the room – throughout their living space. This colour is typically one from a neutral or pastel colour palette, with sage, beige, and putty being popular shades. A monochrome interior can give a space a calming, positive energy.”
quickly following suit – it’s now easier than ever before to incorporate sustainability into your home. “With the discussion about environmentally friendly design and minimal impact on the planet having gone on for a very long time in Scandinavia, many British designers are now also taking sustainability to the next level here. Think recycled wooden floors, hessian place mats, jute rugs, and bamboo kitchen shelves. These are all things that look visually attractive but are also minimally processed to reduce damage to the environment. Incorporating natural light into interior spaces can also reduce the need for artificial lighting and improve energy-efficiency. So, consider the positioning of windows and skylights when it comes to placing furniture and fittings.”
Snake plant | Soto Gardens | £12
If you don’t have green fingers and often kill your houseplants, a snake plant is the perfect choice for you as it requires very little maintenance. It will bring the outdoors inside and connect you to nature from the comfort of your own home. Sotogardens.com
Contrast old and new
Danish interior design often incorporates a mix of vintage and modern elements, creating a unique and eclectic look that’s easy to replicate.
Seaspray organic oval jute rug | Braided Rug Company | from £40
Jute is well known for being highly durable, easy to maintain, and sustainable. This one from Braided Rug Company keeps to the neutral vibes of hygge, with a subtle pop of colour. Braided-rug.co.uk
“Keeping artisanal techniques alive is important to traditional Danish craftspeople, and there’s a good chance that buying vintage Danish-style furniture could land you with some high-quality pieces that can be easily upcycled. When combined with a few of the convenient features found in a modern interior, the results can be both beautiful and functional.”
Bring the outdoors in Beige 07 | Lick | £45
Beige 07 is a mid-beige with warm white and yellow undertones that’s the perfect hygge colour. It’s a rich and optimistic colour that brings a touch of golden hour into your space, making it feel comforting and warm. Lick.com
Aim for sustainability
Sustainability has been a key aspect of Danish interior design for some time, and the UK is
12
Even though a neutral or monochrome colour scheme is a defining feature of a hygge home, unexpected colours can be used to mix things up. “Houseplants add a vibrant pop of green into a kitchen; they play a significant role in a hygge lifestyle. Lush greenery not only splashes colour into a minimal kitchen but also contributes to that sense of calm and zen by connecting with nature and blurring the lines between the indoors and outdoors.”

IN THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
On Wednesdays, Heathlands Villagers have been receiving some special visits from King David Primary School. Nick Burgess and Elaine Conolly from Heathlands Village’s activity team have been meeting the children at the main entrance and giving them a tour of our communal areas to start off each session. Many of the children are amazed to see Heathlands Village has its very own shul, shop, and hairdressers! In a tradition that has been cherished for years, Year Five children come each week on their lunch break to chat with residents (with their lunch boxes in tow). Each week, a different group visits the Activity Centre, ensuring that all the children in the year get a chance to participate. The children love asking questions, and the atmosphere is always heartwarming; seeing the generations mix is truly priceless. Tenants love the event, with one describing it as the highlight of their week and another saying: “It brings so much joy and it's so special that the children give up their lunch breaks to come and talk to us.” Raphi Bloom, The Fed’s Director of Fundraising, Marketing, and Communication, said: “We are so grateful for these wonderful interactions that bring so much joy to both the children and our residents and want to say a huge thank you to King David Primary School.” In November, the children of The Fed’s Big Birthday Appeal Committee members spent the afternoon creating cards for the patients at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH), which will be delivered alongside the gifts as part of The Fed’s Chanukah-mas Toy Drive. The children also had the chance to visit the fundraising office and see the wonderful presents that have been bought by The Fed's generous donors. The toy drive brought in over 450 presents totalling £5,000! These gifts were specially selected for children with additional needs who attend The Fed’s Project Smile and Christmas presents for patients on two wards at the RMCH. All the toys were selected either by The Fed’s social work team – so they are relevant to Project Smile clients – or suggested by the RMCH for their range of patients. These presents were wrapped by the Chanukah Maccabees – the Bar and Bat Mitzvah Programme participants. Natasha Harries, The Fed’s Community Fundraiser and Events Planner, who has been

championing the Chanukah-mas Toy Drive explained: “It was such a lovely event, and we have also been overwhelmed by the amazing response and everyone’s generosity with the toy drive.” Following the 86th anniversary of Kristallnacht in November, nine My Voice Holocaust Survivor Storytellers, their families, and the families of Storyteller Survivors who are no longer with us, gathered to announce the new educational partnership between My Voice and Manchester University. Also present were Manchester Metro Mayor, Andy Burnham; John Rylands Library Director Professor, Chris Pressler; Manchester University Vice Chancellor, Duncan Ivison; Fed Honorary Patron, Mark Adlestone OBE; My Voice project volunteers, educational partners, and colleagues from The Fed. The event was also held to present additional My Voice books to the library and celebrate the publication of the first 29 My Voice books in both paperback and eBook format by Manchester University Press. Manchester Metro Mayor Andy Burnham praised both The Fed's My Voice project and the John Rylands Library for their new partnership and emphasised what a huge contribution it would make to Holocaust education across the North West.
The audience heard from 100-year-old survivor Marianne Phillips, who recounted her own experience of Kristallnacht, and conveyed how much fulfilment she gets from telling her story and having her My Voice book used in schools across the North West. Sarah Fearne, the Head of History at Marple Hall High in Stockport, explained how she has re-written the Holocaust curriculum to integrate five of the My Voice Storybooks and
the powerful impact it has had on hundreds of students. Professor Chris Pressler spoke emotionally and eloquently about why this partnership means so much to him and how fitting it is that the My Voice project – which is about books – has found a partner in the John Rylands Library. These thoughts were echoed by Manchester University Vice Chancellor Duncan Ivison.

Now, swiping profiles on a dating app, she suddenly sees his face and her world explodes all over again. Josh's reappearance will force her to dive back into the mystery surrounding her father’s murder and uncover long-buried secrets from her past. Severance | Apple TV | 17th January
The Bright Side: Why Optimists Have the Power to Change the World | Sumit Paul-Choudhury | 2nd January Blow away those January blues with this uplifting book by astrophysicist turned journalist Sumit Paul-Choudhury. The Bright Side makes a transformative new argument – that optimism is not only the natural state of humanity, but an essential one. Its benefits manifest through our everyday lives and will play a critical role in overcoming the challenges of the 21st century. Sumit offers suggestions on what it really takes to be an optimist today and provides a powerful manifesto for hope and a much-needed new perspective on our prospects. He shows how we can find a path to the bright side, even when the future seems dark.
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy In cinemas 14th February
Severance is back for its highly anticipated second series that will see Mark Scout (Adam Scott) leading a team at Lumon Industries, whose employees have undergone a severance procedure which surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment is called into question as Mark finds himself at the centre of an unravelling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work. In season two, Mark and his friends learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a path of woe.
Saturday Night In cinemas 31st January At 11.30pm on 11th October 1975, a troupe of young comedians and writers changed television – and culture – forever. Saturday Night is based on the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first ever broadcast of Saturday Night Live. Expect a film full of humour, chaos, and the magic of the revolution that almost didn’t happen because of an evening filled with mishaps and a cast and crew that were struggling to cooperate.

Everyone’s favourite romcom heroine, Bridget Jones, returns for a fourth instalment of the hugely popular film series. Mad About the Boy follows Bridget (Renée Zellweger) as she tries to navigate life, love, and motherhood after being widowed after her husband Mark Darcy was killed on a humanitarian mission in the Sudan. On her return to work, she tries out dating apps and is pursued by a dreamy and enthusiastic younger man (Leo Woodall). Juggling work, home, and romance as well as grappling with the judgement of the perfect mums at school will make for another hilarious yet heartwarming Bridget Jones film.

Your Health and Wellbeing Guide for 2025 Starts Here
Start the new year fresh with our guide to cutting out the drinks for Dry January. As the confetti settles from your New Year’s bash, many of us are waking up with a sore head, wondering why we keep doing this to ourselves… Enter Dry January, the month-long challenge where folks everywhere are swapping cocktails for mocktails, and the results are downright dazzling. So, let’s dive into the health benefits and tips for making this month not just bearable, but a load of fun. Ever noticed how a little too much wine can leave you feeling foggy? Ditching the drinks helps clear that mental haze. Many people report increased focus, sharper thinking. Not to mention, alcohol is a depressant. By ditching the booze, you can expect a mood boost that’ll make you feel like you’re on cloud nine. Say goodbye to restless nights! While you might feel sleepy after a glass or two, alcohol can disrupt your sleep cycle, giving lower quality sleep, and making it hard to stay knocked out. By cutting it out, you’ll find yourself snoozing more soundly. That means more energy for those dreary January mornings. Your skin will also thank you. Alcohol dehydrates and can lead to breakouts. By giving your body a break, you’ll notice a radiant glow and maybe even a few compliments on your fresh-faced beauty. Not to mention, those hidden calories in high sugars beers, wines, and cocktails can add
22
up pretty fast. With Dry January, you might just shed a few stone without even trying. Let’s talk money! Cutting out those expensive drinks can save you a small fortune. Use that extra cash to treat yourself to something special. Now, you might be wondering how to cruise through this month without feeling like you’re missing out. Fear not! Here’s how to make Dry January fun and fabulous:
and challenges. Join a community online or in your area to share experiences, tips, and cheer each other on.
Get creative
Keep your calendar packed with fun activities, whether it’s trying out a new fitness class, volunteering, or exploring local attractions. The more you stay engaged, the less you’ll miss the booze!
Who says you can’t still enjoy a fun drink? Mix up some sparkling water with fresh fruits, herbs, or a splash of your favourite juice. Think of it as a party in a glass – without the hangover!
Avoid temptation
Keep the fun rolling by planning activities that don’t revolve around drinking. Game nights, movie marathons, or even a dance-off can fill your social calendar with excitement!
Strength in numbers
Team up with friends who want to join the Dry January journey. You can motivate each other, swap mocktail recipes, and create a support system that makes it easier to stick to your goals. The internet is buzzing with Dry January groups
Set small goals
Take it one step at a time. Instead of looking at the whole month, focus on one week at a time. Celebrate your mini victories, and reward yourself with non-alcoholic treats!
Stay busy
So there you have it! Dry January isn’t just about saying no to alcohol; it’s a chance to embrace a healthier, happier you. With a little creativity and a positive mindset, you’ll be strutting through this month with a smile and maybe even a new habit that lasts beyond January. Carmel gives us her six tips for creating healthy, well-balanced eating habits…
Eat Better, Live Better Israel born Clinical Nutritionist Carmel Berke shares her top tips for building sustainable, healthy eating habits for optimum wellbeing. January is a time that many use for reflection on how to live a healthier and more vibrant life. Eating well is essential for maintaining good health, boosting energy, and improving overall wellbeing. A balanced diet that’s rich in nutrients helps our bodies function at their best, supports immune health, and reduces the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. The food choices we make directly impact our physical and mental health, influencing everything from mood to concentration. Clinical Nutritionist Carmel Berke was born in Israel and grew up in Finland: “I suppose my love for food and nutrition came from the stark contrast between the two countries and what was on offer from a food point of view. I went from a Mediterranean country to a Scandinavian one, where they didn't have the same kind of fruit, vegetables, and exotic food that I was used to. “This went further when I went back to Israel at 19 and joined the army; there you’re really pushed to the limits with sometimes
24
quite poor nutrition. We relied on box meals and tinned food that were very high calorie but lacked in fresh ingredients and certain vitamins and minerals. I’d say that’s where my obsession with clinical nutrition began as I started to get an idea of exactly what the body needs for optimum functioning.” After finishing her stint in the army, Carmel moved to the UK, completed a Human Nutrition degree, and began to work with Age UK Salford: “I became responsible for a new programme that raises awareness of older people's malnutrition risk and to bust some of the myths like older people are supposed to be thinner, more frail, and smaller – that isn’t the case!” A subject that Carmel is particularly passionate about is debunking myths: “I’ve really taken it upon myself to call out ridiculous myths that are all over social media about quick fixes and fad diets. I break down the science behind them to get a better understanding, and they simply don’t work.”
1. Eat regularly
“Eating regularly helps your body use carbohydrates, fat, and protein to fuel your body more efficiently.”
2. Include all food groups
“Different food groups contribute differently to the body. You have carbohydrates which come with a lot of vitamins that are really important for the body such as vitamin C and B. Protein keeps us strong and our muscles working properly, and all of our organs are made of protein so it’s needed. And finally, fats, many people are scared of fats but they hold a lot of fat soluble vitamins and if we don’t have enough in our diet, a lot of what we eat will not get absorbed in the same way.”
3. Drink more water
“Many people simply don’t drink enough! A lot of times when people think they’re hungry, they’re actually just thirsty. If you know you’ve eaten enough and still feel hungry, try drinking water and some of that hunger will most likely disappear.”
4. Eat consciously
“Understand what the purpose is of your eating habits. Are you eating because you’re hungry or for another reason? Maybe because you’re bored or feeling sad. People associate certain emotions with food and my advice is to just take yourself away from the situation.”
5. Avoid quick fixes
“I’d definitely avoid any fad diets or anything that’s advertised as a diet. I don’t like the term diet as it tends to have a beginning and an end; what you actually want to end up with is a really sound eating plan that lasts.”
6. Be mindful about supplements “Unless you’ve got a health condition that requires you to take supplements, a lot of them aren’t necessarily going to give you what you want them to give. There’s very little scientific backing to any of them! The only recommendation that the Department of Health has made in terms of supplements is that everyone living in the UK should take vitamin D, due to the lack of sunlight. Everything else should come from the food you eat.”

Wel l Beat the Blues With Blue Monday approaching on 20th January, we look at some of the best ways to look after your mental health and wellbeing this new year. The festive period and the following weeks can be a tough time for many reasons. Whether it’s dealing with loneliness and grief or the pressure to create the ‘perfect’ holiday experience, these feelings can be heightened during a time that’s centred around family and togetherness. This paired with the pressure of getting swept up in new year’s resolutions can mean January is a difficult time for a lot of people. To start 2025 on a positive note, we’ve crafted a guide of simple, more unconventional resolutions designed to nurture your mental wellbeing and promote a healthier outlook for the year ahead. The concept of Blue Monday was first coined in 2004 by psychologist Cliff Arnall who came up with a ‘formula’ for the January blues that took into account seven variables that affect us in January such as low motivational levels, debt, and the weather to create a date for the so-called most depressing day of the year. It was later revealed that this was a part of a marketing ploy by Sky Travel to encourage people to book their summer holidays. Arnall has since confessed that the formula is essentially pseudoscience and urges people to refute the whole notion of Blue Monday. Despite this, it has become a yearly event often designed to promote wellness products and trivialise what can be a period of hardship for those feeling most vulnerable. But it’s not all doom and gloom, as following these simple steps this new year will not only give you a more positive outlook, but also help to apply healthy habits into your everyday life.
January / February 2025
Get talking
Break it up
Sleep soundly
Be mindful
They say a problem shared is a problem halved, so one of the best ways to deal with periods of feeling low is to reach out and connect with others. Although it may be hard at first, finding time to share your feelings with friends and family will improve feelings of loneliness and form deeper connections with those you care about the most. Arrange a call, walk, coffee date, or even trip to the shops with someone once every couple of weeks to enhance your connections and get you talking. Establishing a consistent sleep routine is essential for improving brain performance, mood, and overall mental and physical health. Prioritising a good sleep schedule can lead to numerous benefits that positively impact your daily life. Sleep consistency boosts cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and problemsolving skills, so as your brain becomes more well-rested, you’ll be more productive and creative throughout the day. A sleep schedule will make you better equipped to handle the challenges and pressures that may arise in everyday life and you’re less likely to be affected by minor irritations or setbacks, allowing you to maintain a more positive outlook.
While new year’s resolutions can have positive effects, the pressure of trying to keep them up can be draining and damaging if they fail. Combat this by breaking up your resolutions to monthly ones; simple rules with a smaller commitment time frame allows for faster iteration and continuous success. If you’re successful one month, roll it over to the next one – but if not, that’s okay! An example of this is picking up a new skill or hobby, a month is a perfect time frame to evaluate. Mindfulness is a technique in which you focus on being intensely aware of what you’re feeling in the moment that can involve breathing methods, positive affirmations, and meditation. Mindfulness can help you become more self-aware, feel calmer, and help you cope with difficult thoughts. An easy introduction to the concept is journalling. The beauty of journalling is that there are no rules, and you can tailor it to your own preferences. You could create a gratitude journal where each day you write down a few things to help appreciate the small things in life that often go unnoticed. If you’re looking for a creative approach, doodling and mindfulness colouring are two useful techniques for a super simple distraction from everyday life.

groceries, picking up children, or carrying heavy furniture, increased strength from resistance training enhances everyday tasks.” One of the most significant advantages of weight training is its ability to improve and maintain muscle mass, which becomes increasingly important as we age. As people get older, muscle mass naturally decreases, leading to a loss of strength and mobility. For older adults, this can result in a higher risk of falls and injuries, particularly when stepping off curbs or navigating stairs. Steve points out that resistance training helps combat this age-related decline in strength: “If people continue weight training, they’ll maintain more muscle mass, which means more strength and less risk of injury later in life.”

We find out why resistance training – exercising with weights – is overtaking cardio as the go-to exercise for fitness fanatics to stay in shape.
Weight and See
In recent years, weight training has become increasingly popular, especially among those looking to improve their overall health and fitness. Once seen as something reserved for bodybuilders or elite athletes, the exercise, more commonly referred to as resistance training, is now recognised for its numerous benefits across all age groups and fitness levels Historically, cardio exercises like running, cycling, and swimming have been the go-to workouts for fitness enthusiasts, especially those aiming to lose weight or improve endurance. However, there has been a notable shift in recent years, with more people turning to weight or resistance training for its multifaceted benefits. Personal trainer Steve Chambers, based at Ultimate Power Gym, believes resistance training is gaining traction due to benefits on both the body and the mind. According to Steve, one of the major advantages of resistance training is its versatility: “Depending on the type of weight training you do, you can tweak the benefits,” he explains. For example, higher rep ranges with lighter weights can help improve endurance, while lower reps with heavier weights focus more on strength. Regardless of the approach, weight training also improves overall appearance by building lean muscle mass.” The benefits extend far beyond just aesthetics though, the impact of resistance training on bone density, ligaments, and tendons are often overlooked when people think about weightlifting: “There’s never going to be a scenario in life where being slightly stronger is not useful. Whether it’s lifting

for improving power, which is often one of the first things people lose as they age: “Weight training requires an element of power, as you’re moving weights quickly depending on the lift. By engaging in weight training, individuals can preserve and even increase their power, ensuring they stay functional and strong throughout their lives.” It’s also good news for those who are trying to lose weight. Building muscle through resistance training has the added benefit of boosting metabolism. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn at rest so you can afford to eat a little more: “Having more muscle mass means you can burn more calories even when you’re not working out.” While resistance training offers numerous benefits, it’s not without its complexities. Proper technique is essential for avoiding injury, and for those new to lifting, it’s important to start slowly and learn the correct form. To minimise risk and maximise results, Steve recommends that beginners seek guidance from a personal trainer, especially when starting out: “Going to the gym and doing something is always going to be better than doing nothing, but knowing that what you’re doing is actually relevant to your goals will save you time and frustration.” Whether your goal is to improve strength, enhance endurance, or simply look and feel better, weight training offers a host of benefits, both physical and mental.
In fact, research supports the notion that older adults who engage in resistance training have a reduced risk of falls and a higher quality of life due to their preserved strength and mobility. With more muscle mass, individuals are better equipped to handle physical challenges and remain active, reducing the chances of frailty and the associated health problems that often come with aging. Steve also emphasises that resistance training offers more than just physical benefits; it’s also crucial

We guide you through the best techniques for achieving flawless gel manicures at home, along with top tips for maintaining strong, healthy nails — whether you prefer salon treatments or DIY.
Failure to prepare
Who says you need to visit a salon to enjoy the look and feel of professional gel nails? With the right tools and techniques (and a bit of patience!) you can achieve flawless, long-lasting results from the comfort of your own home with our must-know tips and tricks. If an at home manicure isn’t your bag and the salon is your happy place, take a look at our aftercare guide. Beautiful nails aren’t just about aesthetics, they also need to be strong and healthy; we’ll be sharing advice for maintaining nail health so you can keep your glossy, sleek manicure long after your appointment has ended.
As arguably the most important step of your at home manicure, your prep time should take up at least a third of your whole nail session. Start by pushing back your cuticles with a cuticle pusher and scrape the dead cuticle off the nail plate. The second step is to buff the nail with a buffer so that the polish will last longer by ensuring it has something to stick to. Applying gel to a rough surface that has been buffed will reduce the likelihood of chipping or peeling. Finally, and most importantly, you need to remove all the dust and debris that’s been created during the first two prep steps. Soak a cotton pad in acetone and apply it to the nail to dehydrate it and achieve dry, oil-free base ready for painting.

Healt You’ll need to apply a layer of gel base coat before getting to the gel polish, otherwise it won’t adhere to your nail bed. It’s important to keep this as a thin layer as if it’s too thick, it will struggle to cure under the UV/LED lamp. Once the prep and base coat are complete, the fun can begin! Remember to keep the polish layers thin, and don’t worry if it goes wrong; the beauty of using gel polish is that if you mess up and apply too much, you can simply remove the whole layer and start again. Work out what technique works best for you, whether it’s to paint the entire hand before curing it under a lamp, or painting and curing each nail individually. Regardless of when you choose to cure your nails, you should cure based on the amount of time specified by your lamp. 30 to 60 seconds is usually the recommended amount of time. Once your base coat and colour are applied and cured, apply a thin layer of gel top coat and carefully seal the tips. This helps to protect your manicure and ensures the edges are covered to prevent lifting and chipping.

Less is more
Whether you’ve done your own nails or are just back from the salon, aftercare is for anyone and everyone – it’s almost as important as the manicure process itself! Hydration is key; apply a cuticle oil and hand cream as least twice a day to get back the moisture lost from using acetone and alcohol, to stimulate growth, and prevent lifting. Hot water, detergent, and chemicals are a recipe for disaster when it comes to longlasting manicures due to their harshness that can dry out and weaken the nail. Make sure to wear gloves when doing the washing up, cleaning, or gardening to ensure your nails are protected. Your nails are not designed to be a substitute for tools, especially not your freshly painted set. Everyday objects like paperclips or coins can be used to open cans and bottles with ease or try using elastic bands for gripping instead of your nails. And last – but certainly not least – don’t pick off your manicure! It can be tempting once you see signs of chipping but picking at gel polish can take off layers of your actual nail with it, leaving them weak and frayed at the tip. When removing gel properly, it should just crumble off, you shouldn’t need to forcefully scrape it off; do this safely and carefully with a gel polish remover or acetone.

Professional Hypnotherapist and Mindset Coach, Yocheved Levin, talks through the benefits of hypnotherapy and how it works. The fear itself is not the issue, rather the false triggers, just like the way an allergic reaction works. The fact that your body is fighting a perceived danger is good but because the “danger” is not a threat, the reaction is self-destructive and this is essentially what happens with anxiety, panic attacks, and fears. Thinking back to ancient times when encounters in the wild were a part of everyday life, it is clear how essential fear is. It allows your body to think and run faster, making you more effective in avoiding danger. Through hypnotherapy the trigger is removed so thereby removing the ‘threat’, in other words hypnotherapy allows your mind to reassess what is a real danger. By neutralising the emotional reaction both parts of your mind can work more cooperatively.
ing be
As a Professional Hypnotherapist and Mindset Coach, I am often asked how hypnotherapy works especially in such a short time frame. In order to understand hypnotherapy let’s first understand a little about how your mind processes emotional experiences and how hypnotherapy has the potential to help you, as well as the science behind hypnosis.
Pathway To Healing
Understanding hypnotherapy
The human mind consists of both the conscious and subconscious components. In a healthy mind they work alongside each other and can be thought of as logic and emotion. The conscious mind controls the logical/ analytical part of you that tries to see reason in chaos. Hypnosis works with the subconscious component as it is here that 90% of your memories are stored, including associated emotions. Each experience creates an emotion and when this is an unpleasant emotion your body naturally sends signals to the subconscious and marks it as ‘danger’. Your mind will
forever protect you from feeling that way again with various defence mechanisms, which will sometimes only come in to play years after to the original trigger. This is how disorders such as anxiety, panic attacks, OCD or other fear based issues can occur and develop over time. It is simply your mind raising awareness of the “danger” and attempting to protect you from what is seen as a threat. Protection from danger is a vital part of your mind’s function.
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis provides an increased state of awareness, whereby the mind is relaxed, focused, and more open to suggestion. Clients describe it as a very calming,
positive experience and say that hypnosis helps them address situations that would otherwise be too painful to deal with. They describe feeling so much lighter and the ability to discover solutions they would never have consciously become aware of. The brain communicates with electrical pulses sent between masses of neurons within the brain, the frequency of these pulses are measured in Hertz (cycles per second) and
alter according to the brain’s activity. Gamma, the fastest state, is above 30Hz this state used for high levels of concentration. The Beta state (12 to 30 Hz) is the most common waking state, and is the state used when alert and processing information. This is when analysing and problem solving occur. It is this state in which anxiety exists. The Alpha state, (seven to 12 Hz) is a more relaxed state and starts to link the conscious to the subconscious. In this state more mental clarity and awareness is found. The Theta state, (four to seven Hz) is the state where daydreaming occurs, and it is now that the subconscious mind becomes highly accessible and suggestive. This is when profound learning and healing takes place. The Delta state (0.1 to four Hz) is the deep sleep state. Hypnotherapy works with the Alpha and Theta states, feeling similar to the moments before sleep, when your mind and body are deeply relaxed.
Is hypnotherapy safe?
Hypnosis is perfectly safe and the state in which hypnosis occurs is part of the process of falling asleep. Throughout the day people drift between the different states, daydreaming being a common example of this. During hypnosis you are fully in control, revealing as little or as much as you wish to. It is a wonderful state to be in as it brings clarity, peace of mind and enables the release of pain without re-living it. The process of hypnotherapy rids your mind of unhealthy thoughts and emotions and reinstating inner peace. As a result clients experience noticeable relief after already the first session. Many clients undergo lifetime transformations in a short period of time, check out client’s feedback at Trancework. co.uk/testimonials Yocheved Levin is a Sleep, Trauma, Anxiety and Bereavement Specialist, fully qualified and experienced Hypnotherapist and NLP/Mindset Coach working locally and internationally changing lives. INTERVIEW
On the Frontline Chief Executive of Magen David Adom, Daniel Burger, explains the charity’s work and his connections to the organisation.
PHOTO: DAVID COLE
Magen David Adom (MDA) – which translates to the red Star of David – is Israel's national emergency medical, disaster, ambulance, and blood bank service which has been running for over 70 years. MDA UK was established primarily to assist MDA in Israel. However, the UK sector also gives aid to other equivalent organisations around the world, providing urgent medical care to civilians irrespective of their nationality, religion, ethnic origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, or political affiliation. Chief Executive of MDA UK, Daniel Burger, has been in the role for 13 years: “I began my career in retail which was the first time in my life that I’d experienced antisemitism. It was clear to me that because I was Jewish, I wasn’t going to progress. “I then moved my way into the non-profit world. I’d been involved through friends and was on committees but at first, I didn’t want to get into it as a career. I went from Norwood – a children and families service charity – and then moved to Jewish Child’s Day. From there I was asked to come to MDA. “Coincidentally, I was going to Israel for my cousin’s wedding at the time when I was asked. I didn’t know much about MDA so I thought it’d be a good opportunity to spend some time on the ground with the crews and meet people so I can form a decision of whether it’s for me or not; and it was!” Daniel’s connection to the charity runs deeper than most: “We were going through our archives in a recent office move and I was looking at some photos from the 1960s. I turned the page and staring at me was a man that looked just like my grandfather! Sure enough, it was a man called Henry Burger who was my great uncle and the picture was of him and his wife who had dedicated an ambulance in memory of their son, Gerald, who was killed in a car accident.”
January / February 2025
DANIEL'S GREAT UNCLE, HENRY BURGER, AND HIS WIFE.
MDA is a multi-faceted charity, with many different roles: “Firstly, MDA is the national medical emergency service in Israel, the ambulances are the first responders and they’re the government mandated emergency service. There are also its blood services. MDA is responsible for 98% of Israel’s blood supplies and 100% of the IDF’s blood supplies.” “And thirdly, since 2006, MDA has been a member of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). This is particularly significant because for decades, MDA wanted to be part of the IFRC as it has been on the world stage saving lives for many years. The reason it didn’t join is partly because of itself, it didn’t want to accept the label of the inverted red cross flag, it wanted the red Star of David to be another protected emblem. Chair of the governing body of the Red Cross, Dr Mohammed Al-Hadid, adopted the red Star of David to be a protected emblem that’s recognised under international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions.”
MDA’s blood work in Israel has been more important than ever since October 7th 2023: “We’ve just been involved in building a new $120 million underground blood centre, it’s the worlds most protected blood centre and the core of the building can withstand direct hits from ballistic missiles. Ironically, it opened and became fully functioning on 9th October. It’s been about 20 years in conversation and about five years in building. The opening date had been in the diary for two years, and after the massacre there were questions about whether it should still be opened. Professor Shinar, Director of MDA’s Blood Services Division, said that if ever there was a time to move from an above ground, unprotected blood centre, to a below ground, protected centre, it’s now!” “We’ve lost 36 of our own medics since the conflict began, some of which were brutally murdered on October 7th. That was a very difficult day for MDA, hearing that three of our own had been murdered in their ambulances going to save lives was incredibly tough. What we weren’t prepared for was the outpouring of financial support that we received after October 7th, that’s what’s been so remarkable. It’s testament to the amazing, life-saving work of those in the field. Hearing about the love and support for MDA and Israel really is not something that we take for granted.” Donating money to MDA isn’t the only way to help the charity: “The types of blood in that part of the world are incredibly rare. Matchmaker of Capital: How Maxim Cohen is Fueling Growth in the UK From funding solutions to international investment, award-winning finance specialist Maxim Cohen explains how he helps clients, lenders, and investors manage the flow of capital in the UK. While the UK often underestimates itself, the reality is clear: internationally, it is seen as a safe haven. The country’s stable, predictable economy and resilient property market make it a magnet for capital — particularly from Israeli investors who view the UK as a strong and accessible opportunity just “around the corner.” Through his businesses, The UK Adviser, The UK Lender, and The UK Investor, Maxim Cohen is playing a key role in managing this capital flow. Whether helping clients access the funding they need, supporting lenders with funding lines, or guiding investors toward real estate, equity, or debt-financing opportunities, Maxim is bridging the gaps that fuel growth across the economy.
Meeting growing demand for capital The UK is experiencing significant demand for funding and investment, particularly across three areas:
1. Real estate investments
The UK property market remains highly attractive for international investors, offering transparency, legal protections, and strong long-term value. Maxim, through The UK Investor, connects investors—particularly from Israel—with residential, commercial, and mixed-use developments that deliver returns while contributing to the UK economy by improving housing supply, creating jobs, and boosting infrastructure.
2. Equity investments
For UK businesses, access to equity investment is a game-changer. From start-ups looking to scale to established enterprises driving innovation, Maxim helps channel international capital into businesses with high potential. This investment not only unlocks growth but also creates a ripple effect of job creation, innovation, and economic benefits.
3. Debt Financing
With businesses and landlords seeking short-term funding to support growth or secure assets, the demand for flexible finance solutions has surged. Through The UK Lender, Maxim provides short-term lending
38
options, ensuring businesses and landlords access the capital they need to thrive.
The role of The UK Adviser, The UK Lender, and The UK Investor
Together, Maxim’s platforms form a complete ecosystem that meets the needs of borrowers, lenders, and investors:
The UK Adviser
A mortgage and finance brokerage that helps clients access tailored funding solutions. Whether for property purchases, debt consolidation, or business growth, The UK Adviser guides clients through complex lending markets to secure the funding they need.
The UK Lender
A specialist short-term lender that supports landlords and businesses with the capital they require. From bridging loans to funding for property portfolios, The UK Lender ensures businesses can access flexible, short-term finance when timing is critical.
The UK Investor
A platform that channels international capital into the UK. The UK Investor focuses on three key areas: • Real Estate Investments: High-potential residential, commercial, and mixed-use properties. • Equity Investments: Growth opportunities in UK businesses. • Debt Financing: Supporting UK lenders with funding lines to meet growing demand.
Connecting the dots: managing the flow of capital Maxim’s role is to bring together the three key stakeholders in the capital ecosystem:
Clients: accessing capital
For businesses, landlords, and individuals, Maxim ensures the funding they need — whether short-term lending, mortgages, or finance for expansion — is accessible, tailored, and delivered efficiently.
Lenders: supporting funding-lines requirements
By connecting UK lenders with international capital through The UK Investor, Maxim helps lenders meet rising demand for finance and strengthens their ability to serve businesses and property owners.
Investors: unlocking opportunities For Israeli and international investors, the UK is seen as stable, transparent, and geographically convenient. Maxim guides these investors toward opportunities that deliver strong returns while supporting UK economic growth.
Why the UK remains a prime destination for investment
Despite domestic challenges, the UK stands out internationally for its predictability, legal protections, and resilience. Compared to other global markets, it remains a trusted environment for investors looking for longterm, secure opportunities. Israeli investors, in particular, are increasingly drawn to the UK. The country’s strong cultural and economic ties, combined with its proximity, make it an accessible and attractive destination for investment. Through The UK Investor, Maxim ensures this capital is deployed into high-value opportunities that benefit investors and strengthen the UK economy.
A strategic vision for growth
Maxim Cohen’s ability to connect borrowers, lenders, and investors comes from a unique understanding of all sides of the capital equation. Through The UK Adviser, The UK Lender, and The UK Investor, he is building an ecosystem that fuels growth, drives investment, and supports businesses and individuals across the UK. Whether you’re seeking funding, looking to lend, or exploring investment opportunities, Maxim ensures your goals are met with the right solutions at the right time. NATIONAL SPOUSES DAY
Phil Geller, Chair of the Manchester Jewish Housing Association, gives us all the details on theour association’s proposed with and its your Read six tips for keeping themerger love going Liverpool counterpart. marriage strong, in honour of National Spouses Day
1 2 3
Marriage is a bit like a garden. At first, it's full of fresh blooms, excitement, and adventure. But over time, the initial thrill can settle into something a little more routine. Life’s busyness, work pressures, and family commitments can all cause that spark you once had to dim – or even fizzle out. However, don’t fret! National Spouses’ Day on 26th January is the perfect excuse to breathe some fresh life into your marriage and keep the love, laughter, and connection going strong. So, how do you keep that flame burning brightly even when you’ve been together for years? Here are six fun and simple ways to do just that.
1. Make time for each other
Modern life is packed with distractions – managing careers, social lives, and family responsibilities can leave you with little time to spend with your partner. And before you know it, your relationship might begin to feel more like a comfortable routine than a passionate partnership. To keep the spark alive, it’s essential to make time for each other, no matter how busy life gets. Set up a regular date night every week, away from these other responsibilities. Whether it's dinner at home, a walk in the park, or a cheeky Netflix binge, it’s the quality of time you spend together that matters. Just remember – no phones allowed! Put away the screens, so you can connect properly. You don’t need a fancy night out to make it special. Sometimes, just being in each other’s company with no distractions can be more romantic than a candlelit dinner at a five-star restaurant.
2. Create shared and separate interests
Having hobbies in common is a brilliant way to stay connected with your spouse. It’s an opportunity to bond over something you both enjoy, whether it’s cooking, hiking, or playing board games. Taking up something new together can also inject some fun into your routine – couples' cooking classes, pottery workshops, or even learning a new language are great ideas. You’ll not only have fun but also get to experience something new as a team. That said, it’s also important to have separate interests. Spending too much time together, without any room for individual activities, can create tension. So, go ahead and indulge in your own passions, too. Giving each other space allows both of you to grow as individuals, which ultimately strengthens your relationship.
3. Vocalise your appreciation
4 5 6
It’s easy to take each other for granted after years of marriage. But don’t forget the power of a simple “thank you” or a heartfelt compliment. Acknowledging the little things your partner does can have a big impact. Whether it’s thanking them for making the dinner or telling them you love the way they laugh, these small acts of appreciation will remind you both of what you cherish about each other. A little praise goes a long way in keeping the connection strong.
4. Make an effort to impress
Just because you've been married for years doesn't mean you should stop trying to impress each other. The excitement of those first dates may be a distant memory, but there are plenty of ways to reignite that sense of curiosity and admiration. Leave little notes, surprise them with a thoughtful gesture, or dress up just for them. Whether it’s a spontaneous weekend getaway or a candlelit dinner at home, make sure you're still finding ways to show you care.
5. Be adventurous
When was the last time you did something completely out of the ordinary together? Being adventurous doesn't mean you have to go skydiving or book an impromptu trip to a far-flung destination (though that could be fun!). It could be something as simple as trying a new restaurant, taking a different route home from work, or even experimenting with a new hobby. Changing things up every now and then will keep the excitement flowing and help remind you why you fell in love in the first place.
6. Keep communicating
Last but definitely not least, communication is the cornerstone of any successful marriage. Make sure you’re both feeling heard and understood. It’s easy to get stuck in the cycle of daily routines, but checking in with each other, talking about your feelings, and discussing your dreams (even the silly ones) will keep your connection strong. Sometimes, just sitting down and having a good chat can make all the difference in keeping that emotional spark alive.

BETTER TOGETHER
Phil Geller, Chair of the Manchester Jewish Housing Association, gives us all the details on the association’s proposed merger with its Liverpool counterpart.
In an exciting development for the community, the Manchester Jewish Housing Association (MJHA) and the Liverpool Jewish Housing Association (LJHA) have proposed plans to merge, with the goal of creating a more robust and unified organisation that can better serve the evolving housing needs of the community. This merger is expected to take place in early 2025 and will result in the formation of the North West Jewish Housing Association. Both MJHA and LJHA share a rich history, having been established to address the housing and welfare needs of Jewish communities in their respective cities. Their commitment to providing quality housing and support services, particularly to older members of the community, has been a central tenet of their operations. Over the years, the organisations have worked independently yet collaboratively with local authorities, health providers, and other stakeholders to create sustainable housing solutions and promote the wellbeing of their residents. Phil Geller, Chair of the MJHA, expressed enthusiasm about the merger, highlighting the significant benefits it will bring to both the Liverpool and Manchester Jewish communities: “Both organisations come from similar backgrounds, and we’ve always worked together in various capacities. This merger just makes sense. The combined entity will have a greater capacity to face regulatory challenges, adapt
42
to changing housing needs, and amplify its voice within both the Jewish and housing sectors.” One of the primary motivations behind the merger is to ensure that the new organisation will be better equipped to navigate the regulatory landscape, which is becoming increasingly complex. As a larger organisation, they will have more influence in policy discussions and will be able to deliver more robust services for their communities. The merger will also allow the two organisations to share resources and expertise, enhancing operational efficiency and providing a better overall service. The new organisation, North West Jewish Housing Association, will not only focus on maintaining the high standards of service both MJHA and LJHA have set over the years but will also be in a stronger position to address the changing demographic and housing needs of the Jewish community. This includes increasing the availability of affordable housing and offering support for individuals with varying levels of need, from young people to those requiring specialised care.
Both organisations come from similar backgrounds, and we’ve always worked together in various capacities. One of the key areas the merged organisation aims to improve is its outreach to the community: “We’ve already seen a significant increase in demand for housing services, and this merger will help us meet those needs,” said Phil. “The organisation will be better placed to offer a wider range of services, such as signposting people to appropriate housing and providing specialised housing for those with learning difficulties, affordability issues, and those fleeing domestic abuse.” Additionally, the merger will enable the organisation to explore more ambitious projects, such as building new housing and securing government funding for large-scale developments. While these initiatives will take time to materialise, the merger will
IN THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
give the combined organisation the weight and resources needed to pursue these opportunities more effectively. Current tenants of both associations needn’t worry, as the services provided will continue uninterrupted: “There will be no immediate changes to how services are delivered. Tenants will continue to have the same contacts and support they’ve always had. The only noticeable change will be the new name and branding, with the offices in both cities remaining open to ensure continued local presence. Importantly, staff from both organisations will remain in place, and the focus will be on enhancing services, not reducing them.”
This merger will allow us to do more, do better, and make a real difference to people’s lives. The merger proposal has been met with a largely positive response from both communities. While there is always some apprehension about change, especially when it involves a trusted institution, the consultation process has reassured residents that the merger will not negatively impact their services. Phil noted that tenants were most concerned with practical issues such as rent collection and communication channels, and the organisation is working hard to ensure a smooth transition. The collaboration, set to be finalised soon, represents an exciting new chapter for Jewish housing. The combined organisation will be better placed to tackle the housing challenges faced by Jewish communities in Liverpool, Manchester, and beyond, and the new North West Jewish Housing Association will continue to build on the legacy of both organisations, providing highquality housing and support services that meet the evolving needs of the community. Phil added: “We want to be the go-to place for anyone in the Jewish community who has housing needs, no matter how they identify. This merger will allow us to do more, do better, and make a real difference to people’s lives.” Mjha.org.uk

Israeli Breast Cancer Treatment Goes Global

A representative of the hotel said: “We are delighted to welcome Roy Avidor as the new General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Herzliya! “Roy brings over a decade of leadership in the international hospitality industry, with a proven track record of operational excellence.” “Most recently, Roy served as Director of Operations at the Sheraton Grand Tel Aviv, where he oversaw daily operations across multiple departments, always ensuring the highest standards of service. IceCure Medical, a Caesarea developer of minimally-invasive cryoablation technology that destroys tumors by freezing as an alternative to surgical tumor removal, announced that data from its ICE3 trial of ProSense treatment in early-stage breast cancer were presented at the Radiological Society of North America's 2024 Annual Meeting on 5th December in Chicago. Dr. Kenneth Tomkovich, Co-Principal Investigator of the ICE3 trial, said: “The significance of the ICE3 results in the field of radiology, especially among breast radiologists, cannot be overstated. As the largest study of its kind, ICE3 provides crucial data that can support the shift towards the deescalation of breast cancer care with cryoablation as a less invasive procedure, enabling the cohort of patients included in ICE3 to have a safe and effective option to surgical lumpectomy." The findings presented included: • The overall five-year recurrence rate of 3.7% in combination with adjuvant endocrine therapy and 4.3% in the eligible ICE3 trial population is similar to reported recurrence rates for the current standard of care, surgical lumpectomy. • Substantial benefits, as compared to surgery, include performance in an outpatient setting using local anaesthesia, the only reported adverse events being minor in severity, and 100% patient satisfaction with cosmetic outcomes. • Results of the ICE3 trial suggest that cryoablation for small low-risk breast cancers is a safe and effective primary treatment option alternative to surgical lumpectomy. • Sentinel lymph node biopsy is likely not required in this cohort of patients.

New UK-Israel Trade Head
From the everyday to the some day
Matan Safran recently replaced Ofer Fohrer as the Minister for Economic Affairs, Head of the Economic & Trade Mission to the UK. Speaking at Mind the Tech: London 2024 shortly after his appointment, Matan said: “As the Israeli Economic & Trade Mission to the UK, we are here to support you in realizing your goals in this vibrant market. We are here so to assist Israeli and British companies to come together through business and investment scouting, market research, incoming and our going delegations, business events and much much more. With a passionate and dedicated local team, backed by our partners both here in the UK and in Israel, we are determined to strengthen the economic ties between our nations and push them to new frontiers, despite the obstacles we face. “The Israel-UK economic relationship is stronger than it seems on the outside, reflecting both nations' commitment to growth and innovation. In 2023, bilateral trade between Israel and the United Kingdom reached approximately £8.1 billion, a figure that we aspire to grow yet again. The UK was, that year, before the war, Israel’s third-largest export market, with exports to the UK covering sectors such as pharmaceuticals, technology, defence, and food products.”

BUSINESS INTERVIEW
Future Thinking Fresh off the back of LinkyThinks winning a spot on Tech Climbers’ 2024 Ones to Watch list, we speak to Co-Founder and CEO, Dan Rosenberg. Founded in Manchester, LinkyThinks is an education resource platform designed to make children love learning, feel more confident, attach self-esteem to different parts of their learning experience, and build on skills to navigate the world more freely. Jewish brothers Dan and Alexander Rosenberg developed LinkyThinks’ first tech product in 2023 to support primary school teachers and parents to teach children life skills alongside what is typically taught in schools. Dan tells us: “We identified that one of the biggest issues with the Western education system is that we teach children how to pass exams but not how to navigate life. It means that the modern children who are growing up on screens – rather than interacting with human beings – have atrophying critical thinking, communication, social, and emotional skills. We found a way to teach those skills at the same time as creative writing, comprehension, vocabulary building, and other English language and literacy skills. Since launching in January 2024, it’s been used by thousands of teachers and tens of thousands of parents all over the English-speaking world to build skills to help them thrive, not only in the classroom but at home as well.” Tech Climbers’ Ones to Watch list showcases the top performing product led technology businesses across the UK and shines a light on the up-and-coming businesses with bags of potential on track for future success. In December, LinkyThinks was awarded with a place on Greater Manchester’s list: “We’re not even a year into our tech journey and we’ve been listed on one of the country’s greatest and most prolific tech related company lists. It’s like
46
the Forbes 30 Under 30 for tech businesses, so it's huge for us!” The feedback from parents and teachers has been overwhelmingly positive, Dan tells us about one particular testimonial he received from a user of LinkyThinks: “A little girl called Aliyah really struggled socially during COVID. When lockdown was lifted, she had anxiety and couldn't leave the house. She wasn't thriving at school or at home, and her parents and the teachers were really concerned for her mental health. Her parents found LinkyThinks and enrolled her in some of her some of our confidence and critical thinking classes. And by the end of the course, she felt far more confident as she'd faced her fears and no longer
We’re not even a year into our tech journey and we’ve been listed on one of the country’s greatest and most prolific tech related company lists. felt the anxiety that she felt about leaving the house or spending time with friends. She’s now 13 and is thriving socially and academically and building friendships; but most importantly, her parents say that she's a happier person. Ultimately, that's what we try and do.” Dan believes that teaching children nonacademic skills can reveal untapped potential. LinkyThinks’ helps to do this by providing children with confidence and communication workshops, physical learning resources, inperson workshops and classes, and educational videos and tutorials: “Children can leave formal
schooling with good grades, but if they don't know how to look another person in the eye, how to hold a conversation, or communicate themselves effectively, they're not going to have access to the opportunities that they could have.” Teaching these life skills is acknowledged in educational settings, but Dan feels they’re often put on the backseat due to ease and convenience: “It is possible to teach children these skills in school, but it’s difficult and we typically avoid difficult things in society. You can pass over so many aspects of education to technology these days, but that doesn’t use personal engagement. Children aren’t learning these skills as much at home anymore, because they're spending more time on games, screens, and apps – which leads to unanticipated issues. My children’s generation could spend their entire life on an iPad screen and have no interest in going outside whereas when I was their age, I learnt so many skills just by being outside with my friends. “There are many companies that make a lot of money teaching transferable job relevant skills to adults, because the skills gap between school and work is huge. At LinkyThinks, we figured we can address a huge proportion of that by teaching those skills to seven- to 11-yearolds.” Whether it’s preparing your child for entrance exams such as the 11+, or you’re just looking for a way to teach your children valuable life skills, visit the LinkyThinks website to see how it can help you! DANCING STRICTLY EVENTS
Fancy Footwork ABIGAIL LYONS
Manchester Maccabi’s annual Dancing Strictly event was another resounding success. In November, a dazzling and fun-filled evening took place at The Stoller Hall to raise money for Jewish charities across the region. The annual event, Dancing Strictly, was an overwhelming success and raised nearly £45,000 for nine local Jewish charities, supporting the vital work these organisations do for the community. Charities benefitting included MDA UK, CTS, The Friendship Circle, Chai Cancer Care, JWA, The Focus Foundation, UJIA, and Manchester Maccabi. In what is currently a challenging time for the community, Dancing Strictly served as a powerful reminder of how important it is to come together, support one another, and celebrate the talents and strengths
of everyone involved. The event created camaraderie and an electric atmosphere on the night. Abigal Lyons was crowned the audience vote winner for her dance on behalf of The Friendship Circle and Emily Aronson, who danced for Chair Cancer Care, was chosen as the judge vote winner. With such a strong annual turnout and continued support, the show will continue to be a staple in the community diary for many years to come. Admissions are already open for those that are interested in taking part in 2025. Email Vikki@manchestermaccabi.org.uk for more information.

Performance Review Elaine Bermitz reports back from the UK Jewish Film Festival, reviewing The Performance, starring Jeremy Piven and Robert Carlyle.
48
Based on a short story by Arthur Miller which struck a tragic chord with the director's mother, The Performance was a fabulous way to end this year's UK Jewish Film Festival. Shown at HOME, the most accessible venue for Manchester film festival fans, the film tells the story of a shabby dance company whose director (Jeremy Piven) takes to Europe hoping to make a fortune from tap, the new British dance craze. Their dreams come true when a benefactor appears, offering to take them to Germany to perform for a very special guest. This tight little film shows how the Jewish leader wrestles with his conscience, along with the other members of the group. When the money and acclaim become
more tempting and more widespread, the transformation between poor but honest and rich but compromised has its effect on all five of the main members of the group and is powerful on all levels, emotional mental and visceral. The last few scenes are as grim as any film set in pre-Holocaust Berlin might be. If you missed it then it’s worth the effort of finding this film when it appears online, via the Jewishfilm.org site, but I hope it gets a long run at the independent film festivals worldwide beforehand, if only to see Robert Carlyle's standout performance as the terrifying Nazi, and the way the tap dance morphs into something altogether more sinister.

INTERVIEW
Donkey’s Years
MELISSA SORRELL, MAX GOLDBERG AND RICHARD KNIGHT.
Director of Our Neighbour’s Ass, Max Goldberg, tells us about his comedy-drama film which follows a widow and a bothersome donkey.
January / February 2025
Our Neighbour’s Ass is a short film, co-written and directed by Max Goldberg, that sees a widow left with the responsibility of caring for her late husband’s donkey, who comes up against her neighbours’ frustrations as the donkey becomes a local nuisance. The film has just been announced as the winner of the Young Jury Award for Best Short Film 2024 at the UK Jewish Film Festival and will be shown at Hyde Park Picture House on 3rd December. Leeds-based Max has worked in the film and television industry for eight years, with dreams of furthering his career into directing: “I’ve worked with pretty much all the major broadcaster and streaming sites as an assistant director, but I’ve always had aspirations to direct my own stuff. I’ve won the UK Jewish Film Short Doc Fund twice and worked my way up the ladder to be able to direct my first scripted piece with Our Neighbour’s Ass.” Together with Richard Knight, Max wrote the script for the film: “Richard came with the first draft – it came from his personal life and experiences – and then we developed it together. I wrote some dialogue and scenes to inject some Jewishness into it, to make sure that it was all authentic, and that it felt real. It’s a film about loss, grief, and loneliness that has a beautiful balance of comedy and pathos, so it’s still entertaining while tackling some of the harder subjects.” The crew behind Our Neighbour’s Ass were passionate about keeping the filming Yorkshire based: “We shot it at the end of June over four days, mainly in Alwoodley. We also filmed at UHC cemetery, Etz Chaim Synagogue, and in Cleethorpes, we really wanted to keep everything in Yorkshire. I like to describe it as a British Yorkshire Jewish film.” Dame Maureen Lipman plays the starring role in the film, which came about from a personal approach by Max and his producer, Melissa Sorrell: “We were invited to a gala to announce ourselves as the winners of the Pears
Short Film Fund and we knew that she’d be there. We pitched it to her in our Q&A and she was very responsive to it, which was really exciting. Once the gala had ended, Melissa had wandered off and came back 10 minutes later arm in arm with Maureen, and the rest is history!” Maureen wasn’t the only star of Our Neighbour’s Ass; Max tells us why the phrase ‘never work with animals’ wasn’t true with Maureen’s co-star, George the donkey: “With my previous history of working in film and TV, I managed to hire the amazing team of animal handlers – First Choice Animals – from All Creatures Great and Small to supply us with the donkey. George played the starring role as Pablo, and he was unbelievably well-behaved. He would bray at times, but it was more cute than a hindrance, and he was definitely driven by food!” On 11th November at the UK Jewish Film Festival in London, Our Neighbour’s Ass had its world premiere: “It was received well; the laughs and applauses were in the right places. Everyone said they loved the film and their feedback was positive, which is always reassuring! We also had some surprise guests; comedians David Mitchell and David Baddiel were there with their respective partners. Baddiel came up to me and said he loved the film, that was amazing.” Our Neighbour’s Ass has a Crowdfunder page to raise funds to pay for the postproduction crew and raise money for film festival submissions, with incentives such as film posters and masterclasses available for those that are able to support. ADVICE
LEGAL
Navigating Inheritance Tax Shake-Up
With Lauren Clyne, Partner, Tax & Estate Planning at Kuits Solicitors To say that the 2024 UK Autumn Budget has shaken things up with some major updates to Inheritance Tax (IHT) is an understatement! Let’s take a closer look at the key changes and what they mean for you, your families, and your businesses: Taxation of inherited pensions Under current legislation, any unused pension upon a pension holder’s death is not subject to IHT. This means that you can nominate who can benefit from your pension on your death without it suffering IHT. Starting in April 2027, unused pension funds will face IHT. On top of that, beneficiaries inheriting pensions from a deceased who was aged over 75 will continue to pay income tax on withdrawals. The combination could mean an eye-watering
effective tax rate of 67% or more. If you don’t think you’ll need all your pension, gifting funds during your lifetime could reduce IHT exposure – but be prepared for income tax implications. Business Relief adjustments Big changes are coming for Business Relief, which currently allows 100% IHT relief on qualifying business assets. From April 2026, this full relief will apply only to the first £1 million of business assets. Anything above that will get a reduced 50% relief. This shift might mean that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) which includes family-owned businesses will now have to pay IHT on the value of the business passing on death to the next generation at a rate of 20% above £1 million. Changes to AIM and unlisted shares Shares listed on the AIM and other unlisted markets will see their IHT relief cut from 100% to 50%. For investors, this makes estate planning with AIM shares less tax-efficient particularly when these types of shares will not have the benefit of the £1 million allowance
and will instead be subject to a straight 20% tax. Exploring other options to make use of the £1 million allowance will be essential. New Residence-Based IHT rules From April 2025, the IHT system will move to a residence-based approach, leaving the old domicile-based rules behind. This change means that long-term UK residents will see their nonUK assets brought into the IHT fold. Offshore trusts won’t escape scrutiny either, increasing potential tax liabilities on international holdings. What does this all mean? These updates underline the importance of careful and proactive estate planning. From freezing thresholds to new tax rules on pensions and international assets, the changes are complex and far-reaching. Tailored advice from a legal expert can help you navigate these waters, minimising liabilities and safeguarding family wealth. If you want to make sure that your family do not suffer as a result of these new changes, then doing nothing is no longer an option. Kuits.com

NATIONAL DRINK WINE DAY
Wine and Dine Kosher wine expert, Gabriel Geller, shines a light on the best French wines available at Kedem Europe this National Drink Wine Day (18th February). Though we know that ancient wine production originated in regions like Israel and Georgia, the contemporary form of this craft was largely developed in France, alongside neighbouring countries such as Italy and Spain. This craft was refined in the medieval era by monks who mastered vine cultivation and winemaking, primarily for religious purposes. These practices later transitioned into a scientific approach, with the French setting many cultural and scientific standards that now define global winemaking. French winemaking is a reflection of the unique cultures and traditions of its diverse regions, from Bordeaux to Burgundy to the Rhône Valley. Each region contributes distinct methods and flavours, rooted in local terroir and heritage, making wine a key aspect of French culture. Santé – which translates to health in French – is equivalent to ‘cheers’ or ‘l'chaim’. This expression is a wish for good health and happiness, epitomising the French appreciation for good wine, fine food, and pleasant company. As far as wine is concerned, there is clearly a consensus between French and Jewish culture! This term also aptly describes the daily consumption of wine in France, traditionally viewed as part of a healthy lifestyle. While opinions in the scientific and healthcare communities may vary, Gabriel believes that life's pleasures, like wine, should be enjoyed in moderation, with a focus on quality. Here he prescribes some of the best Kosher choices for this year’s National Drink Wine Day. Santé, l’chaim!
Champagne Barons de Rothschild | Rosé Brut | Non-vintage
This Champagne producer is a joint venture of the three branches of the Rothschild family from the famed Châteaux Lafite, Clarke, and Mouton-Rothschild. This beautiful, elegant Champagne exemplifies the kind of wine that results from combining so much knowledge, passion, and uncompromising standards. With notes of freshly picked strawberries, sour cherries, vanilla, and a hint of freshly baked sourdough bread, this luxurious sparkling wine will elevate any meal or joyous occasion.
Koenig | Gewürztraminer | 2022
From the Alsace region – which focuses mostly on white varieties – this is a wine that represents the viticulture of the area quite well, and the pricing is also quite attractive. This aromatic white wine features intense notes of lychee, rose petals, and spices. The palate is medium-bodied, with generous notes of tropical fruits and ginger, balanced by a refreshing acidity which makes it ideal for spicy Chinese or Mexican dishes.
Domaine Raymond Usseglio | Châteauneuf-du-Pape | 2022
From one of the greatest wineries of the Rhône Valley, this is a rich, complex blend crafted from grapes grown on old vines. The nose shows ripe dark fruits like blackberry and plum, with hints of allspice, black pepper, leather, and herbal undertones. The palate is full-bodied, fruity, with a velvety texture and a long finish. This wine pairs excellently with hearty dishes; think big roasts, beef stews, or lamb chili.
Château Dauzac | Margaux | 2021
This first-time kosher offering from a prestigious Bordeaux château has pulled off one of the best wines from the challenging 2021 vintage. The nose features ripe cassis, violets, and a hint of oak. On the medium to full-bodied palate, it presents layers of cassis, black cherry, cigar tobacco, and earthy notes, balanced by medium-plus acidity.
J. de Villebois | Sancerre, Silex | 2023
This crisp white is made from Sauvignon Blanc, showcasing vibrant acidity and purity of fruit. It shows aromas of grapefruit and green apple, complemented by a subtle smokiness and hints of fresh herbs. On the palate, it is light to medium-bodied yet intense, with flavours of lime, underripe pear, and a sharp, refreshing finish. This is a wine that genuinely highlights the mineral-driven character of Sancerre! With thanks to Kedemeurope.com

WE ARE ONE
IN THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
Bestselling author Noa Tishby starred at the latest UJIA Northern Dinner. Two-time New York Times bestselling author and Israel’s former Special Envoy for Combating Antisemitism and Delegitimisation, Noa Tishby earned two standing ovations from over 500 guests at the UJIA Northern Dinner in November. At one of the largest UJIA events in Manchester for many years, Tishby spoke about how she “unfortunately was not surprised by what happened on 7th October.” On her book ‘Israel: A Simple Guide to the Most Misunderstood Country on Earth’ she said: “Many people are shocked that it was written before 7/10, as it discussed many of the things we are all talking about now: Hamas, social media, campuses.” The highlight of the evening was when Daniel Berke, who was interviewing Tishby, invited 13-year-old Mancunian Josh Glynne on stage to join him in questioning the star. Josh, who has gained plaudits from across the Jewish community for fearlessly taking on anti-Israel protestors in debates on the streets of the North West, quizzed Tishby for tips on how to effectively talk about Israel with those who are hostile, and how to manage being a Jewish student on campus when he gets to university in a few years. The dinner, the theme of which was We Are One, raised £871,000 for UJIA’s projects in the UK and Israel. The organisation announced last month that Israel Tour will launch on 9th December, and with the cost of living still increasing, the demand for bursaries is expected to be higher than ever. In Israel UJIA has launched its Rebuild campaign, to help the residents of two kibbutzim attacked on October 7th – Be’eri and Mefalsim – as well as those
residents who have been evacuated from Israel’s northern border communities, to return to their homes and to receive the trauma support that they need. UJIA Manchester Chair, Carmel Berke, said: “We were delighted to host a full capacity event where over 500 people came to support our work. I know how important UJIA is, because I grew up without it. I grew up in Finland in a tiny, shrinking Jewish community. We had none of the amazing UJIA supported youth groups, Israel connections and educational programmes. In the UK, and particularly in Manchester, at the heart of our amazing Jewish community, is UJIA – a power station that injects electricity into everything around us. Since October 7th, our work has reached a new height and I couldn't be prouder of what our team has achieved. It takes people to make a community and I encourage everyone to get behind our urgent and clear message.” Ujia.org

Bird is the Word!
BIG GARDEN BIRDWATCH
From 24th to 26th January, get stuck into the world of birdwatching with the RSPB’s annual Big Garden Birdwatch. Established in 1979, the Big Garden Birdwatch has become a much-loved annual citizen science event that provides the RSPB with a valuable snapshot of how our garden birds are doing across the UK. Since it began, more than 195 million birds have been counted and over 12.1 million hours have been spent watching and recording garden birds. It’s free to take part, only requires an hour of your time, and all you need to do is note down the birds you see and feedback to the RSPB. The Big Garden Birdwatch is for everyone, there’s no prerequisite to be an expert! It’s all about connecting with nature for an hour in your chosen space, whether that’s a garden, balcony, or local park. Whatever you see, whether it’s 20 birds or none, it all counts. Every bird counted (or not) helps to paint a picture of how our garden birds are faring from one year to the next. With wildlife facing increasing challenges due to the climate emergency, it’s more important than ever to submit your results, even if you see nothing at all. According to the RSPB, over the last five decades, we’ve lost 38 million birds from our skies. The results of the survey help the RSPB to identify possible reasons for these declines and how they can be reversed. Reasons behind declines in garden bird sightings are complex and continue to be investigated but things such as fewer green spaces, pollution, and a changing climate are just some of the challenges faced. The top five birds spotted in Greater Manchester in the 2024 Big Garden Birdwatch were the House Sparrow, Blue Tit, Starling, Wood Pigeon, and Blackbird. Will it be the same this time round? By taking part and submitting your sightings you will join hundreds of thousands of nature lovers in helping the RSPB to develop a deeper knowledge of UK garden birds. Luckily, the RSPB has a few handy tips and tricks to ensure you’re prepared for the Big Garden Birdwatch. Firstly, brush up on your ID skills and get to know the birds in your patch – check out our guide below for a helping hand. Another great tip is to provide food, water, and shelter for the birds. If you’ve got outdoor space,
January / February 2025
leave seedheads in place so birds can find their own natural food and don’t cut plants back too much so there are plenty of berries to eat and places for the birds to perch and stay safe. Lastly, if possible, make your patch even more wildlifefriendly by adding water, plants, and homes for wildlife to encourage birds – and maybe even other wildlife like frogs, insects, and newts!
What to look for… ALL PHOTOS: BEN ANDREW (RSPB IMAGES)
House Sparrow
These cheeky characters are often seen in family groups. They have a stout bill suitable for their varied diet of seeds, nuts, and scraps. The male has a grey head and black bib, and females and youngsters are more delicately marked with more subtle brown and beige tones.
Blue Tit
These iconic blue and yellow birds are energetic and chirpy, flitting from branch to branch. They can often be seen joining other tits to form larger groups searching for food in winter. Predominantly seed eaters in winter, they love insects and caterpillars in the summer.
Starling
These lively characters have a reputation that often precedes them. They may appear loud and brash, but they are just chatty and sociable. Their speckled iridescent plumage is a thing of beauty, changing shades between blues, purples, and greens in the sun.
Blackbird
Male birds are black with the iconic bright yellow beak and female birds are much lighter in colour and frequently speckled. They are often seen foraging on the ground, uncovering invertebrates under leaves. Many of the Blackbirds spotted over winter will be birds that have bred further north and will not be the same birds that were seen in the summer. VALENTINE’S DAY
Valentine’s Day is more than just cards and flowers in many parts of the world; we take a look at some interesting and unique traditions from across the globe.
14th February marks the day of celebration of Valentine’s Day’s patron saint, St. Valentine, a legend that’s shrouded in mystery. Valentine allegedly sent the first valentine greeting after he fell in love with a young girl who visited him during his imprisonment and signed it ‘from your Valentine’. Although the truth behind St. Valentine is unknown, all stories emphasise his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and romantic figure. Regardless of its origins, Valentine’s Day is celebrated around the world as a time to express love and affection. While 14th February is associated with flowers, chocolates, and romantic dinners here in the UK, other parts of the world have their own special rituals – some steeped in centuries-old traditions and others emerging from more modern influences.
Japan
Valentine’s Day was not traditionally celebrated in Japan until the mid-20th century when it was introduced by confectionary companies as a marketing technique to promote their products. Since then, it has evolved into a distinctive event with its own set of customs. Traditional roles are reversed, Japanese women take the initiative to give gifts to the men in their lives. This practice extends beyond romantic relationships, women also gift giri choco (roughly translated to obligation chocolates) to male friends, colleagues, and superiors as a token of appreciation or friendship. More heartfelt expressions of love are reserved for honmei choco (true feeling chocolate) which are premium chocolates gifted to a romantic partner; these are often homemade as a more intimate and personal expression of love.
62
The celebration continues on 14th March with White Day which sees men expected to return the favour to women who gave them chocolates on Valentine’s Day. The tradition of sanbai gaeshi (triple the return) dictates that the gifts men give should be of greater value than what they received.
South Korea
South Korea celebrates Valentine’s Day and White Day in the same way as Japan. However, South Koreans extend their celebrations of love to the 14th of each month, every month of the year! Black Day falls on 14th April and sees singles that did not receive a gift on either Valentine’s or White Day congregate to eat jajangmyeon (black bean paste noodles) with other single friends. It was originally seen as a day when single people come together to mourn their singleness and drown their sorrows with comfort food. However, in modern-day South Korea, the emphasis on being in a relationship has decreased over the years and Black Day is now seen as a celebration. On 14th July, South Koreans partake in Silver Day which is meant for couples to exchange silver jewellery as a sign that their relationship being ready to progress to the next level. Other days celebrating love on the 14th of each month are Diary Day in January, Rose Day in May, Kiss Day in June, Green Day in August, Photo Day in September, Wine Day in October, Movie Day in November, and Hug Day in December.
Estonia and Finland
For many single people, Valentine’s Day can be a day of dread due to being surrounded by couples exchanging tokens of love. But not in
Estonia and Finland, where 14th February is Friends Day – a celebration of platonic love. Known as Ystävän Päivä in Finnish and Sõbrapäev in Estonian, Friends Day began in Finland in the 1980s and made its way south to Estonia by the end of the decade. Originally created for school children to encourage them to make handmade gifts and cards for loved ones, it became popular among adults by the 1990s. Similarly to typical Valentine’s Day traditions, Friends Day sees cards and gifts shared but can be for anyone from a best friend to a neighbour.
Romania
While some Romanians do celebrate Valentine’s Day in a similar way to the UK, many favour the country’s own version. Dragobete, which falls on 24th February, marks the unofficial beginning of spring and honours love with more traditional customs. According to legend, Baba Dochia – a figure of Romanian folklore who signifies the return of spring – gave birth to Dragobete, who is most often depicted as being halfhuman and half-angel. Romanians view him as being not only the protector of love, but also a guardian of sorts to birds. These beliefs are reflected in every aspect of the Dragobete holiday, from its focus on romance to its many springtime activities. The most common Dragobete tradition is for single people to go into the fields together and gather springtime flowers. The men and women often spend time together as a group, lighting fires and talking with each other until late in the evening. After this, each man chases one of the women back to the village; if the woman has feelings for him, she will allow the man to kiss her.

NATIONAL CHEESE LOVER'S DAY
Mozzarella
Want to try your hand at a cheese that’s a bit more challenging? Mozzarella is the perfect option – remember, practice makes perfect! This will be a great addition to pizza, pasta dishes, or even battered and fried to make homemade mozzarella bites.
Ingredients
Turn milk into magic this National Cheese Lover's Day (20th January) with our recipes to make tasty cheese from the comfort of your own home. The art of cheesemaking might seem like a daunting prospect, but whether you’re a seasoned home cook or just curious about the craft, making your own cheese at home offers a unique blend of science and art where you can experiment with textures and flavours to suit your palate. Elevate your cheese game and indulge in homemade decadence by creating your own cheesy creations that will impress your loved ones, taste amazing, and be completely free of additives and preservatives!
Farmhouse
This recipe for farmhouse cheese is a great place to start for novice cheesemakers as you don’t need any specialist ingredients or equipment, just simple techniques and everyday cupboard staples! Great for sandwich fillings, on crackers, or as a side to main dishes.
Ingredients
• 4.5 litres of full fat whole milk • Half a cup of lemon juice (four to six lemons) • Salt and herbs to taste
Method
1. Pour the milk into a large pot and heat it up to just below boiling point. 2. Add the lemon juice and stir well. 3. Cover the pot and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes, allowing the curds to separate from the whey. 4. Pour the curds into a colander and drain from the whey. 5. Place the curds into a bowl and add salt and herbs of your choice to taste. 6. Transfer the curds into a muslin cheesecloth, tie it, and hang it to drain for two hours. 7. Remove the cheese from the bag and enjoy for up to two weeks!

Fresh curd
This cheese is a step up from the farmhouse cheese that only requires a couple of specialist ingredients. The taste, texture, and flavour are similar to that of ricotta, so use this fresh curd creation in its place.
Ingredients
• 2 litres of whole organic milk • A pinch of salt • 2 teaspoons of rennet
Method
1. Pour the milk into a clean, non-reactive saucepan, add the salt, heat gently, and immediately remove it from the heat when it reaches 38°C. 2. Stir in the rennet until well combined and leave for 15 minutes. 3. Line a colander with a double-layered piece of muslin. 4. Use a small sieve to gently scoop up the curds in as large pieces as possible and put them into the muslin. 5. Tie the muslin and hang to drip above a bowl or sink for three hours. 6. The cheese will stay fresh and sweet for around three days, before turning tangier and cheesier and still good to use for up to a week.
• 1 teaspoon of citric acid • 2 litres of whole organic milk • ¼ teaspoon of rennet • 2 tablespoons of salt
Method
1. Dissolve the citric acid in 60ml of warm water. 2. Pour the milk into a large saucepan and heat it gently – until it reaches around 13°C – add the citric acid, and heat it to 30°C. 3. Dilute the rennet in a tablespoon of boiled water that’s been cooled and add it immediately to the milk. 4. Warm gently to 39°C and stir it from time to time – it will begin to separate. 5. Remove from the heat and leave it for 15 minutes. 6. Carefully scoop the curds out of the pan with a slotted spoon and place them in a sieve. 7. Press the curds gently to remove some of the whey (but be careful – they need to be dripping a little as if you remove too much, the mozzarella will be tough.) 8. Add the salt to the whey in the pan and heat it to 80°C. 9. Put the curds on a chopping board and cut them into four 2cm-thick slices and have a bowl of ice water ready. 10. One at a time, dip the curds into the hot whey for a minute until they begin to soften and stretch. 11. Remove a piece of curd from the whey with a slotted spoon, dip your hands in the iced water, and gently stretch out the cheese. Fold it back on itself and work it until it’s stretchy, shiny, and smooth. 12. Mould and pinch the cheese into a ball, then drop it into a bowl of chilled water. 13. Repeat with the remaining curds, refrigerate, and use within two days.

Hit the Books Bring the joy back into books for children as Bolton School tells us how it encourages reading.
National Literacy Trust recently published its annual report about children and young people’s reading in 2024. Based on over 76,000 responses to its annual literacy survey from children and aged five to 18, it found that the percentage of children and young people who enjoy reading was at its lowest since the survey began in 2005. Just 34.6% of those asked said that they enjoy reading in their spare time, a figure that has decreased by 8.8% in the past year alone. With only 20.5% of children saying that they read something daily in their free time, it’s clear that reading enjoyment is on the decline. But it isn’t all doom and gloom, there are plenty of ways to encourage children to read more at school and at home, as Bolton School tells us… Rewarding reading is a great place to start with encouraging children to pick up a book. In 2024, the English departments at Bolton School started using the Sparx reader app to better track engagement with reading. The top readers and those who reach gold reader status on the app receive rewards for their reading, and the stats show excellent engagement, with an impressive completion percentage of 98%. Across the senior schools, pupils enjoy a weekly morning form time that is set aside specifically for reading too. Reading is set as homework in boys division literacy lessons, while in the girls division pupils enjoy fortnightly library lessons where they read through an anthology with their peer group. Students are encouraged to recommend books to one another, adding a social component into reading will add another element of fun for kids. All Year 7 boys are excited to choose a ‘book buzz’ book in the autumn term. The boys division literacy lessons begin with a book recommendation for others, and the student-led ‘gold reader’ newsletter also promotes reading to boys. In the girls division, recommended reads are included as part of the curriculum. The library encourages boys and girls in all year groups to provide recommendations to go on display amongst the shelves, so that

pupils can see what their peers have been enjoying. World Book Day offers yet more opportunities for students to share favourite books with one another. The library also shares suggested reads to support the English curriculum and to encourage reading for knowledge. In fact, the recommendations begin even before students arrive at Bolton School. At the beginning of the school year, all incoming year sevens received a book, Wonderscape by
linked to current events in school and in the wider world, such as Black History Month, Neurodiversity Month, LGBTQ+ displays, horror at Halloween, banned books, and more. Bolton School also promotes reading for pleasure more widely through the Bolton Children’s Fiction Award – an annual award run by the school’s librarians, which allows children across Bolton to select their favourite book from the three shortlisted.
Jennifer Bell, to read in the summer before they joined the school, and extra tasks were provided to extend their engagement with the story. The library also provides new students with a list of ‘seven books to read before year seven’ to give young readers more options to explore. Bolton School pupils benefit from several author talks a year, both in-person and virtual. These experiences help young readers to develop their comprehension skills by exploring these books in more depth. Providing a wide variety of material is key for children to explore their interests via reading. Bolton School’s library is at the heart of its culture of reading for pleasure, providing a safe space where pupils can read, enjoy clubs and activities, and explore wider interests. There are regular thematic displays
Every year, the school hosts a Book Award Day in celebration of the books and reading, with the shortlisted authors attending to meet children from schools around Bolton. This is always a popular event, with lots of engaged children full of questions about the books! The shortlist for the 2025 award was announced after deliberations and the three shortlisted books are The Final Year by Matt Goodfellow, The Secrets of the Snakestone by Piu Das Gupta, and My Brilliant Plan to Fix Everything by Ben Davis. Library staff at Bolton School said: “While all quite distinct titles, they do have common themes running through them – determination, resilience and maintaining a sense of humour when life is challenging. We hope that everyone reading them will enjoy them as much as we have.”

EDUCATION ESSENTIALS
Deputy Headteacher of LJFS (Leeds Jewish Free School), Sam Lawson, offers her advice for standing out in a competitive applicant pool and how your children can make informed and confident university choices.
Planning for university requires planning and preparation that is as important a life choice that your children will ever make. Upon entering Year 11, they will be focused on achieving the best possible GCSEs that they possibly can and hopefully will have already worked on volunteering, work experience, and extra-curricular activities that can set them out from the pack when applying for their post-16 choices.
What to choose?
At both 16 and 18, these choices run along three lines. It’s important that students know about the merits of the apprenticeship route, Sixth Form, and further education and the preparation for each of these steps. At 16, students should work on a personal statement, it is at this stage that they can start to look at UCAS statements and model their words around the requirements of applying through UCAS for higher education. It also helps at this stage to encourage your child to know their way around the apprenticeship websites and how these searches work on the Gov.uk websites so that they know what areas apprenticeships are offered in, what the requirements are, and how to familiarise themselves with local area market information.
Attend open days
Further education providers offer open days and opportunities to speak to course leaders which can be helpful in the decision making process. It can also be useful to attend careers fairs in local areas – these are usually attended by university and colleges, apprenticeship providers, and large employers. It’s an absolute must to visit the university your child wants to apply to and make sure to take the time to speak to students already taking the course as their insight is invaluable.
January / February 2025
Know their strengths
The obvious choice is to encourage your child to pick subjects that interest them and that they are good at. They might want to be a rocket scientist but if their strengths are English and humanities, follow that – they can always do PR or marketing for NASA!
Look beyond learning
Have an open discussion with your child about student life beyond the course, would they prefer studying away from home? Do they like big cities with huge student populations or campus living? What is the cultural life like in the place they’ve chosen – does it make them happy? University is about much more than the academic side, it’s important to consider the other aspects of student living when considering their next steps.
Consider entry requirements
Make sure your child is familiar with the grades that they need to get into their desired university and course. They may need to work extremely hard for what they want, and it’s important to deliberate whether or not it will be worth it. Create a back-up plan with your child just in case things don’t work out as expected. A Level courses can be very competitive and academically demanding and so some university courses will have a minimum requirement and others may be open to negotiation on results day. Get to know more about the routes of clearing and deferred entry – it’s better to be safe than sorry. Above all, the most important thing is to encourage your child to put in their best effort when it comes to studying. However, it's equally important to remind them that there will be plenty of trained advisers available to guide them through their next steps once the results are in. With any luck, everything will fall into place, and the world will be their oyster!

Music is an enriching and central aspect of life at The Manchester Grammar School, offering every pupil the chance to participate, excel, and enjoy. The Music Department at The Manchester Grammar School caters for both the enthusiastic amateur and those more deeply committed to instrumental or vocal pursuits. Alongside a diverse array of dynamic performance opportunities beyond the classroom, highly qualified teaching staff deliver an engaging and challenging range of academic courses. In the Lower School, the music curriculum combines hands-on practical activities, such as steel pans, samba, ukulele, and keyboards, with theoretical learning, listening exercises, and cultural awareness. This foundation allows pupils to develop their musical vocabulary and composition skills, supported by the use of specialist software. For those continuing with the study of Music in Year 9 and beyond, these areas are explored in greater depth, further enhancing their musical abilities. Sixth Form students studying Music benefit from opportunities to perform, compose, and analyse a variety of musical styles and traditions. The school is proud of its strong record of preparing pupils for further study at leading conservatoires and universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, often with choral, organ, or instrumental scholarships. Beyond academics, all pupils have access to an extensive and vibrant co-curricular

programme, featuring choirs, orchestras, bands, ensembles, and musical theatre. Pupils also have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument with one of the 24 Visiting Music Teachers, take ABRSM exams on site, and attend additional music theory classes. Recently, the pupils showcased their musical and dramatic talents in a collaborative production of Les Misérables. Pupils from The Manchester Grammar School, Manchester High School for Girls, and Withington Girls’ School came together for this ambitious production, which featured participants from Year 4 to Year 13. Staged over three evenings in the MGS Cryne Theatre, each performance ran for nearly three hours and demonstrated exceptional dedication, skill, and perseverance. Throughout the year, pupils from Year 3 to Year 13 also have opportunities to perform in a variety of events, including Junior School Teatime Concerts, Senior School and Sixth Form recital competitions, outreach concerts with local primary and secondary schools, seasonal music concerts, and the annual Music Festival. A TOUCHING TALE
IN THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
The Muslim Jewish Forum of Greater Manchester organised its 150th event which was a visit to Holocaust Centre North at the University of Huddersfield. Holocaust Centre North (HCN) in Huddersfield opened in 2018, the brainchild of Holocaust survivors mainly from the West Yorkshire area. The Muslim Jewish Forum (MJF) of Greater Manchester paid a visit to the centre at the beginning of November. HCN’s exhibition focuses on 16 men and women who were all born into Jewish families in Central and Eastern Europe whose lives were changed forever by the German Nazi regime because their families and communities were destroyed. All originally came to different parts of the UK but settled and made new lives for themselves in the north. The exhibition tells their stories to keep the memories of their families alive. One of the 16 people featured is Trude Silman. Her daughter, Judith Smith, told the MJF visitors Trude’s story. Trude was born in Bratislava in 1929. When the Nazis began their occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1938, life changed dramatically for Jewish citizens. Trude’s parents decided to send her with her aunt and cousin to the UK for her protection when she was just nine years old. It was very poignant when Judith stated that her mother could not remember saying
goodbye to her parents as a child and that unfortunately, she never saw them again. Despite such trauma in her early years Trude went on to study Biochemistry at Leeds University where she met her husband, Morris, and they had two daughters together. She has been thankful for the kindness people in her adopted homeland of the UK have always shown her. Trude is now 95 years old and still
lives in Yorkshire. MJF’s Muslim Co-Chair Mohammed Amin said: “Like my previous visits to Holocaust museums elsewhere, this was a sombre day. HCN’s displays remind you that each person who perished in the Holocaust was an individual with a name, a family, and hopes for the future. HCN reminds you of where demonising ‘the other’ leads.”
LEST WE FORGET A touching and poignant day was held at The Nicky for Armistice Day in November. Rodney Ross brought his audio-visual presentation, We Were There Too, to The Nicky to mark Armistice Day. A two-minute silence was also observed by The Nicky’s members and staff to remember the fallen soldiers. PHOTOS: LAWRENCE PURCELL PHOTOGRAPHY

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY
In Memory Ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day on 27th January, we find out how Holocaust Centre North and Manchester Jewish Museum are marking the occasion.
Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) takes place every year on 27th January; a day dedicated to remembering millions of victims of the Holocaust and other genocides recognised by the UK government. This day is the anniversary of the liberation of AuschwitzBirkenau, the most infamous of the Nazi concentration camps. This year marks the 80th year since the liberation of the camp; as such the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust has organised a digital exhibition of 80 bespoke candleholders designed and created by communities and organisations from across the UK that highlight the life of an individual or a community persecuted by the Nazis. The theme of this year’s HMD is For a Better Future. The theme highlights our collective responsibility to shape a better future by confronting Holocaust and genocide denial, challenging prejudice, and promoting education about the Holocaust and more recent genocides. Two of our local museums will also be holding special events to commemorate the day. Both of the events are free to attend, so be sure to make space in your calendar!

To mark HMD 2025, the Manchester Jewish Museum has been collaborating with a group of young people from the Homework Club at NTCG Faith Tabernacle, Cheetham Hill. The young people have been exploring stories from the museum's collection, learning more about the experiences of Jewish refugees during the Second World War. In response to the stories, they have been creating artworks on this year's Holocaust Memorial Day theme of 'For a Better Future'. These artworks share the young people's ideas for Cheetham in the future, including ways in which we can continue to make the city a welcoming place for people arriving into Manchester. Join the museum for an exhibition of their works, alongside other activities designed by the young people. Manchesterjewishmuseum.com
Join Holocaust Centre North in its HMD commemoration as the museum remembers the six million Jewish people murdered in the Holocaust and the victims of subsequent genocides across the world. The evening will feature artists, performers, and speakers, including: • Jen Kagan, the centre’s Chair of Trustees and Friend of Holocaust Centre North. Jen helped to curate the ‘Through Our Eyes’ exhibition in 2018, which features the remarkable story of her mother, Margaret Kagan. • Professor Caroline Sturdy Colls, a Professor of Holocaust Archaeology and Genocide Investigation at the University of Huddersfield. ADVICE
OUR COMMUNITY With Marc Levy, Chief Executive of the Jewish Representative Council On the 1st January 2000, the New York Times created a fictional front page around what life would be like on the 1st January 2100. In and amongst the fictional stories around flying cars and robots demanding the right to vote, in the bottom corner there was a small caption around Friday night candle lighting times. When asked about why this was included, the editor said that no one could predict what the world would be like in 100 years’ time but the only guarantee was that Jewish women would be lighting candles on a Friday night. Having just celebrated Chanukah, another of our beautiful festivals, this resonated with me strongly. I frequently speak in this column about how impressive it is that our community

fully integrates into society while maintaining our belief systems and traditions. This anecdote from one of the world’s most recognisable newspapers perfectly encapsulates this principle. One of the other integral parts of the Jewish faith is to express our gratitude to those who undertake invaluable work and care for people who are in need. That is why we are once again joined with the Time To Say Thank You initiative created by Rabbi Alby Chait in Leeds for the second year. It was a wonderful event where people from our community attended hospitals, care homes, and the emergency services to say thank you for working on Christmas Day. When we turned up, it was a wonderful moment as staff members who have
given up the opportunity to spend time with loved ones on their special day received a small gift as recognition. I encourage you all to register for next year to spread some joy and good wishes to staff members who have selflessly dedicated themselves to care for those who are less fortunate. NEWS IN BRIEF Heathlands Reminisces with Man City
In November, Heathlands Village had a special visit from Chiara Young and Marcus Matthews from the City in the Community team at Manchester City FC to deliver their ReminisCITY programme. The ReminisCITY programme aims to create a dementia-safe environment for participants to enjoy social and physical activity, through the conduit or football and Manchester across activities within Greater Manchester. They began the session with a Man City player themed bingo that featured stars from across the decades. A City shirt was won by one of the residents, Jeff, who was thrilled with his prize! The session then moved on to ball skills using special foam footballs. Either using their feet or hands, residents rolled and kicked balls around, passing them between each other. A few City themed tunes finished the session, including fan favourite Blue Moon which was accompanied by a slice of cake and a cup of tea!

Mitzvah Day Event
At the end of November, Heathlands Village welcomed local children for a heartwarming Mitzvah Day event. The collaboration with the PJ Library helped the children to share mitzvah-themed stories alongside the residents. The special day was filled with delightful storytelling and a creative crafting session, bringing smiles to all participants.

LJW Coffee Morning
The League of Jewish Women North West Region and the Council of Christian and Jews (CCJ) held a coffee morning at Stenecourt Synagogue in Salford. The guest speaker was retired judge Margaret Goldrein who spoke about some of the cases she dealt with during her career. Also in attendance at the event was The Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Paul Andrews, and the Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Suzanne Wyatt. Manchester Jewish Representative Council’s Chief Executive, Marc Levy, and CCJ Manchester Co-chairman, Rev Canon Steve Williams, were also present at the coffee morning.
Pupils Entertain Belong Residents
Residents at Belong Morris Feinmann Care Village in Didsbury enjoyed the singing talents from pupils from North Cheshire Jewish Primary School as an early Chanukah treat. Year six pupils sang their renditions of Chanukah songs for an early celebration before inviting residents to join in with Mao Tzur. Belong’s Cultural Experience Co-ordinator, Angela Luckett, said: “There were many joyful memories shared as our customers recalled their own children, grandchildren, and even great grandchildren attending the school.”
JRC’s Discussion with Lord Mann
In December, the Jewish Representative Council (JRC) held one of its regular meetings with Lord Mann, the government’s Independent Adviser on Antisemitism. The meeting focused on the challenges across society and also the areas where the JRC has been successful in combatting antisemitism. The JRC is also looking to progress a number of innovative ideas around how it is able to continue educating organisations about the gold standard in combatting racism against Jewish people.
Camp Simcha Theatre Night
Camp Simcha supporters came from near and far for the charity’s gala theatre evening at The Lowry in December. Come From Away attracted theatregoers from Manchester, Leeds, and London for the fast-paced musical, which tells the story of the real-life experiences of the people of Gander in Newfoundland and almost 7,000 airline passengers who were forced to land there when US air space was closed on 11th September 2001. Camp Simcha supporters were each treated to a goody bag and the event raised over £1,200 for the charity’s work supporting Manchester children and families with seriously ill children. Contact Michal@campsimcha.org.uk for information on future Camp Simcha events.
Jewish Women’s Aid End of Year Stats
New figures released by Jewish Women’s Aid (JWA) show significant rise in the number of women and children seeking support over the past year, highlighting the growing need for services combating domestic abuse in the UK Jewish community. The figures show a 24% increase in the number of women receiving support, a 9% increase in the number of children affected by abuse, a 26% rise in the number of counselling sessions delivered. There’s also been a staggering 64% increase in the number of clients seeking help after experiencing sexual violence. JWA offers sensitive support to those affected by abuse, including therapy and help from Independent Sexual Violence Advisers. JWA provides a wide range of services including financial advice, legal support, and counselling, to help them rebuild their lives and find safety. Chief Executive of JWA, Sam Clifford, said: “These figures are a stark reminder of the growing impact of domestic abuse and sexual violence within our community. We are seeing more women and children reach out for support, but we know there are still many who are suffering in silence. We encourage anyone affected by abuse or violence to get in touch with us. JWA is here to support all across the Jewish community, regardless of social background or religious denomination.” Jwa.org.uk
