LJWB’s Café Returns

LJWB has recently relaunched it’s popular ‘Pay As You Feel’ Café this month, to the delight of the community. LJWB truly values the importance of connecting with one another which is why it has introduced some additional entertainment alongside the meal. The café will provide a delicious, 2-course, hot, vegetarian meal to share among friends, followed by entertainment… and just pay as you feel! New Shul President

Jonathan Straight has been appointed as the new President of Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Synagogue. Jonathan will be taking over from previous President Martin Port, who had to stand down from the position due to health reasons. Before becoming President, Jonathan has served as the Treasurer of BHH for the last two and a half years. About his new appointment, Jonathan said: “It is both an honour and a privilege to be appointed as President of the BHH in what is its 150th year. My family has deep roots with this community; my great-grandfather served as Vice President in 1941 and then as President for the following three years. My late father was also Vice President in the early 1990s. “Since the middle of 2021, I have served as Treasurer, so I have a good understanding of the financials and the general working of the Shul, and I am looking forward to making the most of what we have been blessed with. We have challenges to deal with, but none of these are insurmountable and I hope to build a strong team to tackle these, and to ensure we offer our members and visitors the very best experience. “There has been much talk of a possible merger, and a committee continues to work on a plan. No further decisions have been made on this so far. There are other options we may consider for our future in the medium and long term, but for the moment, we have a beautiful space with room for all our more than 1,000 members and we pride ourselves on being open, friendly, and welcoming to all. “My hope is to continue the legacy set by my forebears and to leave the Shul in a significantly improved position when my tenure is complete.”

WIZO & LJWB Cook Up a Storm

WIZO volunteers will be running cookery sessions at LJWB’s three Learning Disability Homes in 2024. Over numerous sessions, a group of volunteers will demonstrate and cook recipes with a Jewish twist, alongside staff and residents. WIZO volunteers will discuss the origins of Jewish cooking and culture as well as leaving recipe sheets so all the dishes can be made again in the homes.

New Lifting Equipment at LJHA

Leeds Jewish Housing Association disclosed on its website that it has used part of the money it received from the sale of Donisthorpe Hall to purchase automatic lifting equipment and has trained its support team to assess residents and if appropriate aid them back to a standing position. The association believes this will be or great value to residents who do not need medical treatment, to get them back on their feet in a “calm, safe, and dignified way”. LJHA care for a number of elderly residents in its sheltered schemes and understand how trips and falls are a real danger in later life. If residents do fall, prior to the purchase of the lifting equipment, in many cases staff are not able to help them back up without calling emergency services. With ambulance waiting times sometimes in excess of 4/5 hours, this can cause significant distress to residents. With the purchase of new lifting equipment, LJHA will be able to avoid this long wait in the case of common slips and falls.

Kosher Catering Goes In-House

Following the announcement of the retirement, at the end of March, of Rob and Andrea McQue who provide Kosher catering services from the MAZCC, Leeds Jewish Welfare Board will be bringing its catering provision in-house; safeguarding its commitment to those in the community who rely on this essential service: “After much consideration and a robust tender process LJWB’s Board has unanimously agreed that the catering services will be brought back under the management of Leeds Jewish Welfare Board,” said Elizabeth Bradbury, LJWB’s CEO. “During the transition of this service, we aim to continue to provide all current catering services provided at and from the MAZCC including the cafe, restaurant, take aways, frozen meals and of course our famous ‘Lunch for Less’. We will also be able to provide catering for events held at the MAZCC including Bar Mitzvahs, Bat mitzvahs, birthdays and consecration teas. We will not be providing catering and event management services at external venues, but customers will still be able to purchase food from us for their external events.” New Chair of Trustees Helen Lewis said; “We thank the McQues for their years of dedicated service to the Leeds Jewish Community and wish them every happiness in their retirement at the end of March. Discussions have been held with the Leeds Beth Din and Kashrut authority and they have agreed to LJWB continuing to hold the Kosher licence and bringing the catering services in house. With their guidance and supervision LJWB will ensure the maintenance and continuation of high standards for the provision of Kosher catering in Leeds.”

WIZO Coffee Morning for Israel

Leeds Aviva WIZO held a very successful Chanukah Coffee Morning. The organisation is the largest social welfare organisation in Israel. WIZO helps vulnerable and disadvantaged Israeli citizens, regardless of age, race, or religion, to become self-sufficient and contributing members of society. The Chanukah Coffee Morning was opened by Josephine Brill and featured guest of honour Angela Barnett. The event raised a record amount of nearly £3,500. This money will go towards helping families who have been displaced because of the horrific attacks by Hamas against Israel.

Marshall Frieze grew up in Ra’anana, Israel from the age of 15 to 22 and still has close family living in the area. We spoke to him in light of the recent terror attack to gain his perspective.

Only 400 yards away from his family’s home, a terror attack struck Ra’anana exactly 100 days since the conflict began, killing one and injuring 17 others. Marshall Frieze grew up in the neighbourhood and his son, mother, and sister live in the location of the attack. He recalls looking at the TV in a dream-like shock at being able to recognise the surroundings of his upbringing on international news, only now under devastating circumstances. “It happened at the bus stop around the corner from my mum’s apartment while she

was at home and my sister was in the location of the incident probably about half an hour before it actually occurred.” The attack, which was later supported but not claimed by Hamas, involved multiple connected incidents in which cars were rammed into pedestrians on Ahuza Street and Haroshet Street. A 79-year-old woman was stabbed and later died in hospital due to her injuries received in the hijacking of her car and six children aged between 10 and 16 were treated in hospital for injuries between mild to moderate condition. “Ra’anana has a very large Anglo-Saxon community. So, there are other people who are from Leeds and around the UK who live there, so it’s very much a place that people in the UK are aware of and people go and visit frequently. A lot of people at one time will end up in Ra’anana because it’s so close to home.” In fact, Ra’anana is ranked second in highest immigrant absorption in Israel with almost 17,300 (22%) of its residents coming from the UK, US, South Africa, and France. Though Israel has reported few terror incidents since the war began, Israel remains in a state of intense shock since the events

of 7th October. Marshall confides he has felt constantly alert to his family’s safety since after the attack: “I don’t think anybody feels safe right now. I think, in this moment in time, we’re living in a very dangerous environment where incidents can happen at any time, any place, because they’re completely indiscriminate; these terrorists injure and kill as many people as possible irrespective of race or religion to create as much damage as possible.” Though the Leeds Jewish community offers a supportive environment, Marshall feels the weight of protest groups’ collective anger in his daily life: “I don’t think I’ve ever felt as much anti-Jewish feeling as I feel now and as I see on the streets. I think it’s really intimidating with the marches that are going on. And I think it’s very important that I state: any innocent life that is lost, is one innocent life too many, but I think the anger on the streets is channelled in the wrong direction. There will be many people in the Leeds community who have family and friends who live and work in Israel: we’re not unique. There are a lot of people with the same challenges, and all we want is the end of the war and the only way is by the return of the hostages.”

as it develops. During one of our sessions, volunteers found 1960s brochures for the Queenshill estate, family photographs from the early twentieth century and newspaper articles about famous individuals.

Many will be familiar with the book by Diane Saunders and Philippa Lester, From the Leylands to Leeds 17, which tells the story of immigration and growth of the Leeds Jewish community from the late 1800s to the present day. Cultural and heritage organisation Millim has launched the Leeds Jewish Oral History Project, which develops Saunders and Lester’s work by capturing life stories of the Leeds Jewish community within living memory. Volunteers are conducting oral history interviews with older Jewish people, covering a range of themes, including festivals, leisure, and the future of the community. The team is developing an exciting events programme to get more community members involved in the project, including creative writing workshops and a temporary exhibition

and will create an online archive of all the testimonies and artefacts collected. Ultimately, we’d love a space to work on our document archive in the Moortown area where visitors can uncover their family and community history.

A taste of what we’ve found so far

We’ve recorded stories from men who did National Service in the 1950s, memories of teenage meetups in cafes to play Rock n Roll records, a game of bridge with Omar Shariff, a meeting with the pioneer of IVF Patrick Steptoe, and happy camping with the Jewish Scouts and Guides movement. We’ve also teamed up with the Makor Archives and the Leeds Jewish Housing Association to discuss how historic documents in their collections might feature in the project

SPORTS DAY

The UJIA Rebuild Challenge on 14th January has raised more than £140,000 and is still growing.

The UJIA recently organised the Rebuild Challenge, a fundraising initiative for Israel encouraging the community to come together to run, cycle, row, or walk an aggregate total of 3,600 km – the distance (as the crow flies) from the UK to Israel. The initial aim of the initiative was to raise

£36,000 (3,600 km times £10), which would then be doubled by match funders for a total of £72,000, all taking place on one day. At the time of writing the initiative has raised over £140,000, with donations still ongoing. Activities involved group training sessions, group runs and walks, group cycles, and even a group boxing session. 62 teams signed up for the event, each with two to 12 participants, with organisers estimating that around 250 people took part. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. As well as the huge amount of money raised for the Healing Centres in Israel, local organiser Adam Gilman commented that “the positivity the event generated in communities all over the country was amazing.”

There have been several major auctions recently dedicated to pop memorabilia and Freddie Mercury has topped them all with some fantastic prices! Sotherby’s recently held a series of six auctions selling over 1,500 items of ‘Mercuriana’. The first evening auction was not a typical Sotherby’s auction. The saleroom was packed, and such was the response that it took over four hours to sell 59 lots. The audience applauded every lot and sang along to We Will Rock You during the build up! The manuscript draft lyrics for Bohemian Rhapsody sold for a staggering £1.1 million. His silver snake bangle fetched £550,000 and the crown and cloak from his 1986 Magic Tour costume sold for

£500,000. They even sold a door from his home with graffiti scrawled on by a fan for £325,000. The most expensive lot was a Yamaha model G2 baby grand piano at £1.74 million (originally bought for £1,000 in 1975). This was the most expensive price paid for a piano topping the £1.4 million paid for John Lennon’s white piano. An exhibition of the collection was held for a month before the auction attracting over 150,000 visitors from all over the world. More than 600,000 people viewed the sale online from 61 countries and 2,000 bidders registered to buy, bringing the total of the auction to a staggering £12.2 million. In December, an auction room in New

York sold a rare collection of ephemera relating to Freddie’s earlier role as a frontman for the heavy blues band Ibex in 1969. The letters and early photographs together with a ticket to the debut performance of Ibex sold for just under £40,000. St. Gemma’s Hospice stands as a beacon of compassionate care, dedicated to providing the best possible support for local individuals facing cancer and life-threatening illnesses. Specialising in palliative care, the hospice focuses on pain relief and symptom control, aiming to enhance the quality of life for patients throughout their journey. Situated at the heart of the community, St. Gemma’s offers a friendly, warm, and secure environment, extending its expert services to patients, their families, and friends. Regardless of age, gender, disability, race, religion, sexual orientation, or diagnosis, everyone is welcomed and cared for free of charge, embodying inclusivity and accessibility. Notably, the hospice’s commitment extends beyond its walls through the Academic Unit of Palliative Care, providing training to health professionals citywide. James Arkle of ArkleBoyce Architects expressed the joy of working with children to bring their ideas to life, reflecting the hospice’s commitment to involving the community in its endeavours. Behind the scenes, the hospice’s impact is quantifiable. With 492 patients cared for in the In-Patient Unit this year, most admissions within a day of referral, and nearly 20,000 contacts by a team of dedicated community nurses and doctors, St. Gemma’s exemplifies

operational excellence. Additionally, the hospice’s outreach is evident in the training of over a thousand professionals and support for 128 student placements, ensuring a legacy of quality care for the future. As St Gemma’s Hospice is a local, independent charity, the services provided are always free of charge to patients, families, and carers, but are not free to provide. It costs over £20,000 per day to run all the hospice’s services, and this needs to be raised from the generous local community, through donations, gifts left in wills, fundraising initiatives, a lottery, and our chain of charity shops. Way back in April 2022, no-fault divorce was introduced with a view, in the legal world, that it was long overdue. Fault or no-fault, divorce remains a difficult and emotional process, but it does not have to involve acrimony. Many couples can navigate their separation, agreeing how to care for children and the split of their finances. It is important to remember though, that while the divorce process has been hugely simplified, getting a binding financial deal which provides life-long protection, and indeed protection from claims against your estate, can only be done by getting a Court Order. The process for getting a Court Order has not changed, and it is important to get this right. Ensuring that your future finances are protected from claims is hugely important, even for the most amicable of splitting couples – most want certainty and to draw a line. Getting this wrong, by not ensuring your Will is up to date and what you intend,

or not getting a Court Order on divorce (or getting the details of the Court Order wrong) can lead to outcomes which neither party intends. There are key elements of dealing with this where the advice of a good solicitor, with your best interests in mind, while not seeking to “blow up” any sensible and amicable agreements, is key. A lawyer with the right experience can save time and money; one who encourages unnecessary battles will not be best for you. Divorce is a challenging life event, but whilst it is the end of your marriage, it is a new start. Navigation can be from a position of strength, and not one of a destructive and fault-based process. One of the biggest advantages of electric cars is how sustainable they are versus their combustion engine counterparts. But across the span of the EVs lifetime, there is a significant reduction in emissions compared to a combustion engine. Strictly The Masked Singer returned to much acclaim in December, raising money for various community organisations.

The Leeds Jewish community gathered for a night of music, mystery, and masked performers at the highly anticipated event, Strictly The Masked Singer. The event was hosted by the dynamic duo Rebecca Skolnick and Daniel Gray, who guided the audience through an evening filled with suspense and excitement. The show unfolded with a burst of energy as children from Rebecca’s Musical Theatre Life classes lit up the stage, with their delightful Matilda Medley. This was followed by 10 contestants, all dressed in captivating costumes, who took the audience on a musical journey with a diverse selection of songs. With a full house, the audience was not only entertained but also contributed to a great cause, as the event successfully raised just over £12,500. The funds will be distributed among hosts UK Israel Business, Brodetsky Primary School, The Zone, The Leeds Jewish Welfare Board, and PhysCap. The judging panel, consisting of Raina Sheif, Alex Ullmann, and Charlie Rosenberg, had the challenging task of guessing who was behind the mask. The contestants, each hiding behind elaborate masks were revealed as Andrew Reynolds, Andrew Saffer, Caroline Grant, Debbie Scott, Elliot Landy, Emma Portugal, Harry Tedford, Jeremy Goldberg, Naomi Goldman, Sophie Quigley, Susan Wilcock, and Will Maclaren. Marcus Edge claimed the coveted title of “The Masked Singer 2023”, dazzling the audience with an exceptional operatic performance of Time to Say Goodbye that

truly stole the spotlight, and also created a new Italian vocabulary. As the event reached its crescendo, the community came together for a heartwarming rendition of “Salaam,” symbolising unity, shared joy, and support and solidarity for Israel. smoking and eye disease. If you smoke, stop. Smoking significantly increases the risk of developing eye diseases, such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. However long you have smoked it’s never too late to benefit from quitting.

Wear prescribed glasses Have regular sight tests

As well as an eye health check, a sight test might help detect signs of underlying general health conditions, such as diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Everyone should have a sight test every two years, or more often if your optometrist recommends it.

Eat healthily

Eating a healthy, balanced diet reduces your risk of eye disease. Include lots of omega-3 fats, found in oily fish, and lutein, found in dark-green, leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale. Vitamins A, C and E are also helpful, so eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. If you have a family history of macular degeneration (losing central vision in the eyes), ask your optometrist about taking nutritional supplements.

Follow the 20/20/20 rule – every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away, for 20 seconds. And don’t forget to blink, as this helps prevent your eyes drying out.

Wear sunglasses

As well as making your vision more comfortable in the sun, sunglasses protect your eyes from UV light. When choosing sunglasses, you should always make sure that they carry the CE or British Standard marks. There are different categories

of sunglasses to choose from, including everyday wear, as well as frames for specialist sports. Exposure to UV when young does most harm, so protect children with sunglasses, as well as a hat and sunblock.

Avoid dry eyes

Eyes become dry, tired and sore if you are not producing enough tears or you have poor-quality tears. Central heating, air-conditioning and computer use can make it worse. Many adults suffer with dry eyes due to a health condition or medication. Lubricating eye drops can soothe irritation and reduce discomfort. You may find taking omega-3 supplements helps over time. Drink plenty of water and remember to blink often. If your eyes are persistently dry, tell your optometrist.

Research your family history

Many eye conditions run in families, from simple long and short sight to more serious diseases, such as glaucoma. Knowledge of problems with sight can help detect a condition before it becomes serious. Remember your optometrist is the first person you should visit if you have any eye concerns. Her disappearance sparked one the largest manhunts to date, involving 1,000 policemen. 11 days later, Christie was discovered in Harrogate, checked in at the Swan Hydro – now The Old Swan Hotel, a renowned wedding venue for LS17 residents – under a false name, and with seemingly no memory of how she came to be there. Visitors can still visit the hotel, which is a veritable shrine to all things Agatha Christie.

Heading out of town, there are many walking trails which allow you to explore the picturesque surroundings. Explore the Nidderdale Greenway or venture into the nearby Yorkshire Dales for a refreshing outdoor experience. You can even grab a hardhat and map and explore the caves and beauty spots of How Stean Gorge, wandering through ravines and clambering over rocks. For the more daring explorer, there’s even a high wire and abseiling course available from Via Ferrara. While out and about, you can head to the historic ruins of the once prosperous Fountains Abbey, a Georgian water garden, a manor house known as Fountains Hall, Studley Royal medieval deer park, a beautiful Victorian church, and Cistercian watermill there’s plenty to explore here. Along the River Nidd visit Mother Shipton’s Cave, England’s oldest visitor attraction, which opened in 1630. Mother Shipton was born in the cave in 1488, and as she grew older, became famous for her prophecies. She foretold the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 and the Great Fire of London in 1666, and her cave is famous for its petrifying well which can turn everyday objects to stone. Harrogate’s blend of history, natural beauty, and cultural offerings makes it an enticing day trip. It’s been an exciting few months for the synagogue which held a very successful Chanukah party, in December, for almost 100 guests where over £4,500 was fundraised for Magen David Adom which will be spent on a street defibrillator in Israel. It was attended by local dignitaries and faith leaders including many friends and community members. Other speakers who demonstrated their solidarity with the Jewish community included the Lord Lieutenant, the Mayor, and Andrew Jones MP. All five of the cottages are situated close to town and in close proximity to local transport. Voice of the People Performer, musician and podcaster, Hayden Cohen has been creating art and media on behalf of the Jewish community for over 10 years. His three one-man performance poetry shows have been to Edinburgh Fringe, one of which won Shortlist Magazine’s Pick of the Fringe, and his UK Jewish community podcast, Bagel Podcast, has featured high profile guests from around the globe. We found out more.

Hi Hayden! Tell us how Bagel Podcast started and what topics were featured?

In 2018 podcasts were really growing so I decided to start one for the UK Jewish community, I’ve been podcasting for 12 years, and I was a SoundCloud International Fellow. There’s a section called Bagel Broigus which is a panel discussion where people with different perspectives discuss subjects of interest to the Jewish community. There’s been some quite high-profile guests in its time such as one of the CoFounders of Limmud, Clive Lawton OBE and the first female Chess Grandmaster Susan Polgar, who spoke about her childhood growing up in Soviet Hungary. All episodes are available on Bagelpodcast.com for people to listen to and a relaunch is planned for 2024.

What’s special about performance poetry and what does it mean to you?

Jewish Writer and Performer Hayden Cohen tells us about his creative work representing the Jewish community.

I like the rhythm of performance poetry and I enjoy performing it. Whenever I’ve done it in my shows, I never go ‘And, now here’s a poem.’ I might do a song, and then a bit of a spiel, and then before people know it, I’ve launched into a poem. And what that does is it disarms people. School has a big part to play about how people think about poetry. Generally the way poetry has to be taught in schools is in order to pass exams. I haven’t seen anything in GCSE English that presents poetry in a way which would engage anyone, and I’m saying that as an ex-English Teacher. I think it’s all about helping people to understand that their words matter. When I was working in a university in London, I was in a meeting and one of the deans said to a group of academics: ‘We hear you’ and one of the academics instantly became angry and said: “You may hear me, but you don’t listen.” I found the whole interaction fascinating because that just shows how you frame something completely changes the outcome.

How does being Jewish feature in your work?

While some of my work is most definitely Jewish themed, even those parts that initially appear to not be Jewish in the slightest, that Jewishness comes through. It’s a constant and integral to who I am and how I see the world. But of the three shows I have written and performed, 2013s Secrets of the Elders of Zion was the most Jewish by far and the one which was the most controversial. It was a satire as to how I wasn’t invited to the secret Jewish conspiracy so I decided to start the UK branch myself. I wanted to point out how ridiculous of an idea it was that there’s a secret Jewish cabal. The issue was people thought I was being serious! Leeds Jewish Welfare Board (LJWB) is offering a range of support services to help the community, enabling people to connect with other like-minded individuals who understand challenges and can support them on their journey, these include: Women’s Support Group – run by women for women. This group explores topics related to mental health and wellbeing; Men’s Support Group – run by men for men. Enables men to discuss a variety of issues in a

safe, supportive environment. Carers Support Group – support for those who look after others. Carers can get help, advice, and information. Inclusive Social Group – take part in a wide range of social activities, trips, and entertainment. Memory Stimulation Group – small groups

sessions with games, activities, and techniques to help keep your memory young. Life Stories (£3) – with assistance from staff, make a scrapbook of your memories and build a personal biography with photos and memories of the past. Cognitive Stimulation Therapy – activities to help those with mild to moderate dementia improve their memory and thinking skills. All groups are £2.50 per session, unless otherwise stated and booking is essential. Get in touch with LJWB to learn more about how it can support you on your journey towards wellbeing and independence. LJWB receives help from outstanding volunteers year after year. This year’s Impact Care Awards, run by Chabad Lubavitch, will include young volunteers (CTeens) from the Jewish community, aged 11 to 18 years. The CTeens will complete various projects for LJWB, amongst other local charities, building up their volunteer hours, which will culminate in an awards dinner in July. The CTeens will undertake numerous activities to help, benefit, and support LJWB services such as helping out at the monthly Pay as You Feel Community Café and delivering bags, to be filled with pre-loved items, for the LJWB Charity Shop.

LJWB is also honoured this year to have six runners training hard ahead of the 26.2 mile London Marathon on 21st April. Philip Rakusen, who isn’t running this year, will be taking up the mantle in memory of his dad, Lloyd, and supporting the team through their rigorous training programme. Proving a book is great company is The Leeds Library, sitting in a beautiful building in Commercial Street, the oldest library in the UK which has been a hub for the community since 1768.

Having opened in 1768, The Leeds Library is the oldest library in the UK and is a largely unknown part of Loiner history. The library has always been run on a subscription basis, meaning the library buys in what people request to read. Building up those requests since 1768 means the library has incredible historical records of popular fiction from the 1700s, but it also means it’s now running out of space. The Next Chapter Project is an expansion to The Leeds Library to meet the demands of its growing archives and need for a more accessible space in its Grade II listed building which it has occupied since 1808. Ian Harker, Communications and Marketing Officer tells us all about the new venture. “The Library started its life as an elite organisation attended by prominent citizens typically mill owners, industrialists,

solicitors – the well to do.” Being handed back to the general public of Leeds, anyone can now visit and attend its tours and events, though membership is necessary to be in regular attendance and to request books. “One of the remarkable things about the library is that we have books on our shelves that were acquired as part of the first set of books that we bought in 1768. So, we’ve got books in our care that were there 255 years ago,” Ian comments. The Leeds Library’s events are accessible to anyone, you don’t need to have a membership to get involved, Ian says: “The Next Chapter Project is about getting more space for the archives but it’s also about providing a heart for culture in the city and part of the building next door will be an events space which will facilitate in-person and online events which will take us to new audiences and get people to come in for the first time.” Literary themed events are posted on The Leeds Library’s website and have included an exciting range of guest authors, book signings, and recently a special reading of Charles Dickens by Dickens’ great great grandson! The library also provides welcoming space for the community, attracting remote workers who love the quiet and the company of bookshelves to help them through their day. When asked about the community found in The Leeds Library, Ian

reflected on a memory he had of a school trip: “I had just gone downstairs to make a cup of tea when a lady in a high-vis jacket came in and said: ‘I’m sorry, this is really cheeky, but I have a class of 28 pupils from my primary school outside. We were just passing, and we were wondering if it would be ok if they could look around?’ So, we said: ‘Of course, please come in.’ We didn’t have to tell them to be quiet, they were just gobsmacked looking around the building and they asked such wonderful questions about the books – children always have the best, and the hardest, questions to answer. “It was an absolute joy. Just one of those children might remember that trip for the rest of their lives and it might be the point at which they decided, ‘I want to be a librarian’ or ‘I want to be a writer.’” Theleedslibrary.org.uk

Mothers’ Day began in many countries as an award recognising women for birthing several healthy children during periods of low birth rates. In France during 1920, the French government created an official day dedicated to mothers of large families and awarded them with the Médaille de la Famille Française. In Germany during 1938, a similar award was introduced called Mother’s Cross (Mutterkreuz) and in Iran several women under Shah’s government were rewarded for birthing several healthy children.

In Ethiopia the Antrosht festival, in early autumn, is dedicated to mums. After the hot weather breaks, families gather in their homes for a big celebratory meal where daughters traditionally brought vegetables and cheese while sons brought the meat. After the meal, songs and dances are performed and stories are told of family heroes. In Mexico, it is also customary to sing the congratulatory song Las Mañanitas to your mother on Mothers’ Day, either acapella or with a mariachi trio.

The main focus of a landlord is looking after its existing homes and tenants and here at LJHA we take that responsibility very seriously. But housing associations also build new homes and can often be the only organisation putting any new and affordable homes into a community with a specific housing crisis. That is why we are excited to say we will soon be submitting a planning application for 28 new family homes on the Queenshill Estate to give local families the chance of an affordable home in the LS17 area. For years now our tenants, and the community, have been asking us for more family housing, which is especially important given the wait for a social housing family home in LS17 is well over a decade. The location we’re discussing is just off Queenshill Avenue where currently some of our oldest flats are, our current priority is respectfully moving those residents to other LJHA homes and settling them in before we hopefully start work in early 2025. There is a long way to go and we need more support of government grants and the community to make this happen but this project feels like a real investment in the community by offering our families a place to make home. New Market Causes City Boom

Leeds’ new Christmas market sparked a festive footfall boom in Leeds city centre in December, new figures have revealed. The launch of the city’s new seasonal market caused the city centre to enjoy its three busiest days since 2019, with huge spikes in the numbers of people visiting a number of key locations. Specialist cameras, which tally numbers in eight areas including Briggate, The Headrow, and Albion Street, have recorded a total footfall of 5,642,691 from 24th November until 17th December, an increase of 13.6% on the same period last year. 25th November, the day after the Christmas market launched, saw the city centre enjoy its busiest day since 2019, with a total footfall of 338,299 and footfall on Briggate, one of the city’s top shopping hotspots, hitting an impressive 57,209. For the first time in Leeds, the Christmas market saw stalls and attractions spread out across 13 different areas of the city centre, with a range of traditional, timber, seasonal stalls decked out in festive lighting and featuring international, UK, Yorkshire, and Leeds traders.

Independent Study Endorses Israeli Cancer Treatment

An independent study, in which Israeli company ProSense was one of two cryoablation systems analysed, was overseen and conducted at the Breast Centre of Excellence and the Department of Surgery, School of Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Centre. A total of 32 early-stage breast cancer patients with a median age of 70 (range of 50-91) were treated with cryoablation, a treatment that uses intense cold to freeze and destroy abnormal areas of tissue. Six of the 32 patients (18.5%) received adjuvant radiation, and 31 of 32 patients (97%) received adjuvant endocrine therapy. The mean follow-up was 15 months, with 20 patients (62.5%) completing two years, and 12 patients (37.5%) completing more than three years. All patients were disease-free at the last follow-up visit, and no major complications from the procedure were reported. The patient population in this study is similar to the population in IceCure’s ongoing ICE3 study, the largest controlled multi-centre clinical trial ever performed in the US for liquid nitrogen-based cryoablation of small, low-risk, early-stage malignant breast tumours as an alternative to surgery.

Israeli Company Receives Grant to Tackle Disease

Sequentify, a Rehovot-based company specialising in DNA sequencing technology, has been granted funding by the Israel Innovation Authority (IIA). This grant, contributing to a project totalling $1.3 million, supports the development of Sequentify’s targeted sequencing panel for infectious disease research. The panel aims to provide a culture-free, next-day solution for sequencing pathogens, focusing on pathogen diagnosis and antibiotic resistance surveillance. Tamir Biezuner, Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Sequentify, commented on the grant: “We are grateful for the recognition and support from the IIA. Infectious disease is a complex field, and Next-Generation Sequencing is still emerging in this area. This grant will be instrumental in advancing our research and development, helping us to provide timely and efficient solutions in pathogen detection.” Sequentify’s development of this sequencing panel reflects its ongoing commitment to contributing valuable tools for infectious disease research and management. We caught up with him to explore his thoughts on the subject: “To put a Jewish spin on AI, one of the things that I did as a demonstration at a conference recently was that I asked AI: ‘Can you tell me about the Shema?’ It came back and told me that it’s the central prayer of Judaism, the words mean this, this, and this… and started describing it. And that was very good, so I asked it to tell me the same thing in a way that’s suitable for five-year-olds. And it gave me a really nice story explaining exactly the same thing. Then I asked it to

do it again, but for teenagers, and it chose another style and way of saying it.” Despite this, Brian says we don’t have to worry about AI replacing rabbis just yet:

“Right now there’s no aspect of empathy." “There are two different types of limitation. The first is trust. How do you know that what it is saying is correct. If you ask it a question about a thing that you personally know about, you can verify yourself. But if you were to say: ‘Is the following food item kosher,’ can you trust it? If you went to a rabbi and asked, you would 100% trust their answer. Or, if the rabbi didn’t know, you would go and ask a different rabbi. AI systems won’t do that. The AI system will confidently tell you, it is or it isn’t, but

potentially incorrectly. “The other limitation is that right now there’s no aspect of empathy. If you were to say: ‘I’m having trouble with my relationship, what should I do?’ It can give you advice but it isn’t empathising with you, and it isn’t personalising it. If the rabbi knows you he is able to empathise and customise his answer for you specifically. AI systems can only work on their existing knowledges, which is twofold: the content and the style of writing it.” Despite these limitations, Brian does see some use for AI in Judaism in the future: “I can definitely see how it can be used in teaching, especially with the example I used earlier of explaining things in different styles for different audiences, especially children. In terms of adult learning, it can access more sources than you probably can yourself, and it can do so much more quickly. You might have a few books on a subject, but AI can access thousands of books!”

We talk to People Planet Pint’s Leeds Host, John Burgess, to find out how you can help save the planet over a relaxing drink.

Refreshing Change People Planet Pint is the perfect opportunity for those with an interest in sustainability to meet like-minded people and to make connections and friends. It’s a chance to enjoy a drink while sharing ideas and finding inspiration on how they can take action across the local area. We spoke to Leeds Host, John Burgess of Make It Wild, to tell us about how to get involved and what our attitude to sustainability is in Leeds. John explains: “The idea behind People Planet Pint (PPP) is to bring together anyone who is curious about sustainability. So, it’s a really informal format. In Leeds, anywhere between 30 and 80 people turn up to our events, grab a drink, and chat with nice friendly people. Those conversations generally lead to some discussion around sustainability, although there’s lots of general chatter as well.” Attracting a range of different people who all have an interest in personal, local, or global sustainability, people attend PPP events for different reasons. John says: “Visitors could be those concerned about sustainability on a personal level and want to come along and find out more, to small business owners who want a bit of help towards net-zero goals, to huge international organisations. It’s a real mix of all sorts of different people and ages that are coming along.” PPP began as a response to COP26 in Glasgow to give the public a voice during what is considered to be an exclusionary

event which decides the future of climate change. Two years later and PPP continue to host events aligning with COP, naming their own version COPPP (Congress Of the People Planet Pint) to combat the negative news around sustainability: “There was quite a lot of negative press around COP 28, which is understandable because there’s a lot of people who think that things should be happening more urgently. But we want to demonstrate that there’s lots of really positive things happening, especially on a local level,” John adds. “If we continue with negative messaging, people move to a place of apathy and that is a dangerous place because people think that action is pointless. We need to return to hope. Leeds has got a strong sustainability community with lots of organisations that are dedicated to developing the city, like tech companies that are helping other businesses to understand sustainability and then be able to adapt and change. I’m part of a rewilding organisation in North Yorkshire which buys land and gives it back to nature by digging ponds and planting wildflower meadows. “Leeds City Council was also among the early cities to declare a climate emergency in 2019 and has some pretty ambitious net-zero goals. So, Leeds is relatively proactive.” Looking forward, People Planet Pint’s ambition is to get more people to talk about what we can do for the planet. 69% of people are concerned about climate change, but aren’t taking any action, it’s decreasing

that number which is important to PPP: “The key thing for me is more people getting on board, like the impactful quote by Maragret Mead ‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Councillor for Alwoodley, Dan Cohen, discusses the upcoming global record-breaking election year, school placements, and some important dates to remember. Welcome to my first JLife column of 2024. There is a custom with ‘first’ columns of the year to make predictions for the 12 months ahead, however if recent years have taught us anything it is truly an exercise in futility – this is particularly the case given the unprecedented conflict around the globe – and both a UK General Election and a US Presidential Election Campaign taking place this year (and watching the news, you would be forgiven for thinking that these campaigns were imminent – rather than what is likely the back end of the year for both). Closer to home on 2nd May we will have both the local council elections (where my amazing colleague Cllr Neil Buckley is up for reelection for what I personally believe to be the best Ward in the Leeds, Alwoodley). On the same day we will hold the election for the Mayor of West Yorkshire, a role that few realise its huge local importance to the whole region. Not least given the many millions of pounds the government has delegated to the mayor for transport and regional priorities. As always Neil, Lyn, and I will be around and about the whole of Alwoodley, helping residents and trying to resolve local issues, but if you do see us pounding the streets and delivering leaflets, do say hello and stop for a chat – it will certainly help our stress levels. 1st March is High School offer day. Alwoodley residents apply for places at Allerton High School, alongside Allerton Grange, LJFS, and of course GSAL. If you (or someone you know) doesn’t get the school

place they were wanting, do please get in touch and I will do all I can to assist. March will also see us re-launching our street surgeries across the ward. At street surgeries we write to an area within the ward, explaining we will be visiting between 4pm and 6pm on a certain day, to meet with residents and try to address any local issues and concerns. Recycling isn’t just putting empties in the right bins, what about the endless untouched products you have lying around at home? Try break up old makeup products to make new ones. Create your own lipstick shade by melting down stubs or whole bullets of lipstick which you don’t use. Play around with which shades you include and create something you really want. To set the product you can either find a lipstick bullet mould on Amazon or you can simply reuse an old lip balm tin! For powder products like blush, eyeshadow, or bronzer, you can crumble the product in an appropriately sized makeup pan for what you’re making. Combine it with another crumbled powder and crush the two until fine. Add a small amount of rubbing alcohol to the powder and create a paste. Compress this paste into the pan, soaking up a little of the rubbing alcohol, and leave to dry overnight. And voila!

Having recently opened a Leeds venue, Six by Nico is an exciting and adventurous Valentine’s date. The six-course tasting menu, which gives Six by Nico its name, is changed every six weeks and will be sure to include some love-ly bites. If you want to be surprised on your date book ahead and await the theme on your arrival (or you can check beforehand). Previous themes have included a Tokyo theme, a storybook inspired menu titled Once Upon a Time, a Circus theme, a Thai theme, a theme inspired by the Amalfi Coast, and an Alice in Wonderland themed menu. With an ornate and intimate interior, complete with decorative vines and water features, Sukhothai’s original location in Chapel Allerton makes a lovely date location, especially if you’re a fan of authentic Thai cuisine. Since the restaurant first opened in 2002, Owner Ban Kaewkraikhot, has refined the menu to perfection, though you can still find items that have been on there since day one! Teppanyaki

If you’re looking for somewhere flashy, you can’t do better than this location which combines a meal and entertainment into one. Teppanyaki comes from two Japanese words, ‘teppan’ and ‘yaki’, meaning iron plate and grilled, respectively. This flamboyant style of cooking will see you seated in front of a chef who will cook your food on a large iron plate right in front of you, performing mesmerising tricks the whole time. Tattu is a high-end, contemporary Chinese restaurant with a dark, dreamlike interior serving unique fusion food. The concept was initially founded by brothers Adam and Drew Jones in 2015 and has been delighting Loiners ever since. Helen Lewis, a Trustee and former Deputy Chair of LJWB and Chair of Community Engagement and Inclusion, has recently become the new Chair of LJWB taking over from Russell Manning. Having been involved with the Board for over 20 years when she first moved to Leeds, we asked Helen how she feels about the role and what’s on the horizon during her tenure.

Hi Helen! How does it feel to be new Chair of LJWB?

Hello! I am excited, though obviously I am also daunted. I have big shoes to fill after my amazing predecessors, and I am conscious there are lots of public expectations about this role which is one of the key lay leadership roles in the Leeds Jewish community. I think I am the first person not brought up in the Leeds community to be in this role, and the first from a public sector background. I hope that this will encourage people to recognise that these institutions belong to the whole community and that we all have a part to play, whatever our backgrounds.

How long have you been working in the community?

I moved to Leeds about 28 years ago, and I guess I have worked for the community ever

since. I come from a family where doing community work has never been seen as optional. I have been involved in Jewish educational ventures, school governance, and in social care since I moved here. I think the mainstream established Leeds community has become more welcoming of people from outside Leeds, more accepting of people who are seen as ‘different’ in some way (such as single parents, people who are LGBTQ+, people with mental health needs), but we obviously still have a long way to go to be fully inclusive. There are some fantastic institutions and leaders, and we are working better together to meet our needs.

What plans do you have for your new role?

My goal as the Chair, is to support our whole Board of Trustees and our whole staff team to continue to make a difference to the Leeds Jewish Community. It’s an incredibly challenging time for all charities and for the people we serve, due to austerity, and the financial position of the public sector makes this all the harder. My goal is to ensure everyone knows what we can offer, but also that everyone knows there is something they can contribute. Now, more than ever, we need to widen the engagement of our community, and remind them we can use

even the smallest contributions – an hour a week, or month. Volunteering or donating clothes or bric a brac to the charity shop if you can’t spare any money helps a lot.

What makes you proud to be part of LJWB?

We received a donation this week from a community member explicitly thanking us for the support of our mental health team, and their contribution to her wellbeing. Another example would be from our Chanukah party, where I had the pleasure of dancing with the residents of our homes for people with a learning disability, and witnessing the care and affection they have for the staff, and the staff for them. It was so heart-warming, in contrast to the lives these members of our community would have lived 30 years ago. We really do positively change lives, every day.
