INDUSTRY OPINION

Best Behaviour Claire Fennelow, Executive Director of event and visual communication association EVCOM, explains what live events learn can from behavioural science.

Understanding the needs of our audience has always been crucial to putting on successful events, whether they are online or in-person, large-scale or small. Recently we welcomed behavioural scientist Lea Karam (Behave, Total Media) to speak to the senior leaders within our membership about how they can tap into behavioural science to better understand, and communicate with, their audience. Lots of event technology allows us to find out information about our audience. But behavioural science goes further than most event tech. Introverts and extroverts want different things from an event. Risk

takers will respond really well to elements of an event that a more cautious person would immediately avoid. Think about the behaviours of your audience when planning the structure of your event, to ensure different audience types are catered for. Creating opportunities for different audiences to speak to other ideas and their demographic, can empower them and offer them the psychological safety to offer up ideas, and contribute to the group. Small, carefully designed breakout groups are a great way to get more interaction from the different audiences present at your event. But with that being said, it isn’t about constant segmentation. Different

demographics want to speak to each other, want to hear from each other. And mixing people up will ensure a diversity of thought is present in the conversations you are having at your events. When it comes to getting people to your events, the campaign content needs to be different and original. And crucially, it needs to be in a place where your desired audience can find out. Distribution can be as important as the content itself. Behavioural science encourages event organisers to think beyond age group or background, to really consider who your audience are, and what kind of event they are going to engage with the most. Driving Discussion Recognising the power of collaborative thinking to support the growth of the UK’s business meetings and events sector, Chief Executive of the Meetings Industry Association (mia) Kerrin MacPhie discusses how the association is driving discussions amongst the sector’s stakeholders. As an association we serve as representatives to many groups across the sector. Groups with not just varying needs and interests, but also groups with different backgrounds, career positions and challenges. Having listened to the sector’s needs, we’ve been busy establishing dedicated peer-groups designed to facilitate and encourage much-needed conversations between a wide-spread range of stakeholders within the sector. This includes nine groups devoted towards large venues, academic venues, hotel groups, student membership, LGBTQ+, sustainability, destinations, Instant Book,

November 2023

stadia and more in the pipeline. Fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing and best practice, these groups provide a platform for like-minded professionals to engage, brainstorm and explore innovative ways of approaching opportunities and challenges within the sector. At the same time, they will also ensure we as an association continue to be kept abreast of the agenda for the various groups as they allow us to hear pain points and opportunities first-hand so we can support and offer guidance. Meeting regularly, we’ll be publishing agendas and updates from all groups,

while we are also welcoming leaders from across the sector to get in touch should they wish to find out more about getting involved. Collaboration really is key to ensure collectively as a sector we are better equipped to adapt and thrive. To find out more information, email membershipsupport@mia-uk.org. Readers can also keep up to date with sector developments, guidance and advice by following the Meetings Industry Association on LinkedIn and Twitter or visiting Mia-uk.org.

North in Brief Coronation Organiser Announced as Headline Speaker Lindsay Neyjahr, part of the strategy and development team at event company Identity, will headline the National Outdoor Event Association’s Annual Convention 2023. Lindsay is Head of Public Sector: Pitch Strategy and Client Services at Identity and is one of the first people to address the development and production of some of the biggest events that have taken place in the UK in the last 12 months.

NCASS is calling for tax reforms for micro-businesses including reform on the VAT rate for the industry, reform on hot food VAT and reform on the VAT threshold. The current VAT rules, the energy crisis and food inflation are resulting in many businesses struggling to stay afloat. NCASS members from across the country have reported huge losses, stating that the combination of challenges is putting the question of whether to continue with their businesses to the fore.

The session, which will open this year’s conference, leads into its wider event theme of Future and how the events industry is changing. Lindsay will share Identity’s own strategic concepts that seek to understand human experience and how this links together the planning and production of events including the G7, COP26 in Glasgow, COP28 in Dubai, The Queen’s Funeral, The King’s Coronation, and London’s New Year’s Eve Firework Display.

NCASS MD, Nick Summers commented: “Action must be taken swiftly to help keep the independent hospitality sector afloat before it becomes too late for many.”

VisitBritain Extends Future of Events Pathway VisitBritain recently extended its Future of Events educational series by launching a new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Pathway. The extension is in collaboration with New Intent, the pro-social organisation which partners the events community with global changes in DEI, to allow event professionals to understand and more deeply implement DEI across the industry.

The talk will also allow delegates to hear the personal perspective of what events mean to Lindsay, and how we can all create memorable experiences for audiences. The National Outdoor Event Association Annual Congress & Awards will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn, Bath and the Roman Baths and Pump Room, 22nd November.

VisitBritain Head of Business Events, Paul Black, said: “The events industry has a fundamental role to play in ensuring everybody feels welcome, represented, and valued. Understanding and further embedding DEI into event design offers the potential to accelerate important ambitions within the industry as well as developing stronger communities, increase participation and generate more meaningful connections.”

Better Medical Supervision at Events The Event Medical Association, a new body representing medical providers working within the events industry, is set to launch at The Showman’s Show this month. The inception has been supported by the National Outdoor Event Association (NOEA), is part of a shared vision to build stronger foundations within the industry.

Rory Archibald, Founder of New Intent, added: “Embracing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is not just a choice; building a brighter, more inclusive future for our industry and society is necessary. Events that embrace DEI embrace innovation and collaboration and can break down barriers that lead to enriched communities worldwide. VisitBritain’s DEI Pathway, curated in partnership with New Intent, is a testament to our commitment to fostering understanding, implementing change, and creating destinations and events where everyone feels valued and welcome. Together, we’re illuminating the path towards a more inclusive world, one event at a time.”

The Event Medical Association, or Event Medical, will answer the call to provide events with closer, more standardised, and coherent working practices within the sector, but to also address incoming governance that will regulate the medical treatment of attendees at events. Core objectives are: To promote the highest standards of medical care at outdoor events, to encourage and support good clinical and corporate governance, to provide a forum for discussion and debate amongst event medical providers, and to represent the event medical sector and actively promote its good standing.

New Lounge at CHS Birmingham CHS Birmingham will introduce a brand-new PA lounge, exclusively for PAs, EAs and Office Managers who are visiting the show and organise events as part of their role. The lounge will feature a full programme of dedicated educational sessions and networking opportunities as well as being a place to relax and chill out.

Talking on the launch, The Event Medical Association’s CoFounder, Chris Howes, commented: “The government is looking at regulation that will examine the way medicine is provided at major events and, for us, it’s important that the industry has a voice in these discussions.”

Its education content includes a range of sessions led by Lyndsey Taylor from Parklane Events such as New Venues, a glimpse into national and international refurbishments, Back to Basics, a deep dive into the jargon and challenges of the event industry, and Christmas Parties, a talk about the benefits of early booking and the availability, packages, and tips and tricks you can use to prepare for your Christmas events. More on CHS Birmingham on p37

NCASS Fights for Independent Hospitality Businesses The Nationwide Caterers Association (NCASS) has launched a campaign to highlight the challenges that the sector is facing. The Empower Independents campaign has been launched in response to the increasing operational pressures on businesses. Following calls for feedback from its members, key partners, and other associations, NCASS has issued a stark warning to the government that the independent hospitality sector, which includes thousands of event businesses, shows no real signs of immediate recovery or even stability in the short term.

PROMOTIONS

Big Ideas We sit down with Martin Dickson, Director of Leeds International Festival of Ideas, to discuss planning a major festival event for the city.

Planning which parts of the event need to be organised first is key: “We start to identify speakers because for the bigname speakers we need to get in touch with the agents many months in advance because they have big diaries and big commitments. You have to start quickly on the big items.”

Since 2017, Leeds International Festival of Ideas (LIFI) has brought visitors from all over the country and beyond together to consider the big topics of the year. Highlights this year included a sold-out talk by Steven Bartlett, discussing outdated work practices, Ruby Wax chatting all things mindfulness and her personal journey, and Christopher Eccleston talking working class access to the arts industry. With 5,000 attendees and 39 speakers coming together in September, the event was truly empowering and left a lasting legacy in the city. Martin Dickson, Director of LIFI, told us what it’s like to put on such an event: “We start the planning really early, just a week or two after the previous event has happened. It pretty much is 12 months of work, for what is an amazing four days. Always be realistic about how long it will take and hit the ground hard at the beginning.”

Finding the perfect venue is another aspect which is vital to the success of your event: “Logistically, a massive boost has been moving to the West Yorkshire Playhouse for the first time this year. We started the conversation with the venue before last year’s festival, which we delivered at the Howard Assembly Rooms, had happened. If you know what you need in terms of production, you can work that out with the venue early on, and have it sat on the shelf until you get nearer the event, as you focus on other things.” As with most endeavours, having confidence in your ideas and working with the right people is how you’re going to succeed in making a showstopping event: “Have the confidence and boldness to back yourselves. No one else is coming up with what you’re coming up with and everything else to put that idea in place is just logistics. Putting the right talent around you is so important as well. We have a brilliant team which is really hardworking, and it’s not as many people as you’d think. Get the right people, and put the right dream in place, and they’ll make it happen.”

8

When putting on a large event, however organised you are there are always challenges as Martin has expereinced: “Anything that you can’t completely control is difficult, the challenge mainly is around people. We lost two speakers from our line-up schedule this year. You set out and organise the talent you want, and contractually you have a level of agreement with them, but there’s often a clause that you have to thrash out with the agent, which means that once you get within a certain number of weeks, they can’t pull out without paying the full speaker fee which they usually don’t want to do. This year we lost Jay Blades, from The Repair Shop, because he had a bigger commitment. Also, Krishnan Guru-Murthy from Channel 4 News. That’s a challenge when organising an event like this, it’s happened each year. It’s the unpredictable nature of the business.” Look out for news about 2024 at Leedsinternationalfestival.com

Speak Up! A keynote speaker can make or break an event, so how can you make sure you find the right speaker for your event? H&E North talks to experts to find out.

PENNY HASLAM

PAUL J. ABBOTT

A keynote speaker is the main attraction of your event, and something you want to be able to brag about in the build-up to attract people to attend. It makes sense, then, that finding a charismatic and interesting speaker who fits well with your event is one of the most important parts of the organising process. Paul J. Abbott – Author of Events Are Easy... and Motivational Speaker Penny Haslam know a thing or two about how to find a speaker to wow your delegates. Paul pointed out that knowledge and charisma are the cornerstones on which a speaker relies to hold an audience’s attention: “They don’t have to be famous or the big shot, but I look for someone concise and articulate, who can hold a room. Most importantly, a good keynote is able to focus the knowledge and ideas they share in a way that starts the conversation, setting out relevant key points and context for the event. Perhaps, posing the big questions. Everything else hangs from this. “ With these requirements met, the next thing to ensure it that your speaker is able to add something memorable to your event, which will stay with delegates event after they leave, as Penny points out: “Your speaker will only be memorable if they offer lasting impact and value. A memorable keynote speaker is someone with the ability to add lasting value. Although it’s very pleasing and enjoyable for them to come along and wow your audience, they must add something more. So what does value mean? Well, regardless of whether your attendees are businesspeople, employees or just a collection of individuals.

16

Everyone should leave the event knowing how to do something differently, find a new approach to a problem, or think in a different way.” Understanding how to find someone to provide this kind of content comes for understanding your own event and what you want to achieve from it, according to Paul: “Make sure you understand the purpose of your event and you can articulate it to prospective speakers. It needs to be a good fit. Think about the tone of voice your event needs and you are off to a good start.” So, when you’re initially searching out speakers for your events, what should you be looking out for in their profiles? Penny has the answer: “Look for testimonials from similar businesses. Does that speaker work in your market and speak to audiences like yours? It’s all very well having a raving fan on a speaker’s website saying how brilliant they are, but if that fan is from a completely different sector or strata of employees, then that testimonial may not be relevant. If a speaker doesn’t have any video on their website showcasing their work then walk away. Looking for a showreel with content that is useful for your audience. Remember, it’s very easy to make a razzamatazz showreel with amazing music and editing, but what value will you get from that speaker’s content? Ask yourself: Is their message coherent? Is it confidently delivered? Do you like the way they speak? Do you like their energy on stage? Would all of the above go down well with the audience you have in mind?”

INDUSTRY OPINION

Sustainable Cost There is a perception that adopting sustainable practices is an expensive business. David Humphries, Event Supplier and Services Association (ESSA) member and Director of Green Circle Solutions, delivers for events and exhibitions. Here he shares how sustainability practices don’t have to cost the earth.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach and many misunderstandings surrounding the topic of sustainability. But while being more sustainable isn’t always easy, there are many economically viable steps businesses can take.

Time Start by investing time in analysing your business operations. To ensure a sustainable way of working becomes embedded in your business culture, a topdown approach is key. Asking questions often highlights aspects that can be done differently to save costs and drive better revenue.

Communication Challenge your suppliers to support you on your sustainability journey. They may already have more sustainable products and services that you are not aware of, and effective planning can determine which can be implemented quickly without impacting the bottom line.

Design out waste As an industry it’s also vital we address waste management, especially from the show floor, which requires a greater level of collaboration between all stakeholders, with venues and organisers stepping up to take a greater share of this responsibility. Waste is not the problem, waste is a result of the problem, and must be designed out from the start. Recycling does not make you are sustainable; it is simply one strand of waste management. It’s still a waste!

Action ESSA is leading and supporting with its comprehensive Sustainability Accreditation and Sustainability Awareness training which focuses on all key areas of sustainability and is designed to enable members to build their sustainability roadmap with ease. The bottom line? Identify what changes can be made, communicate them business wide and you’ll see some remarkable results that don’t cost the earth. Essa.uk.com

Light Up The lighting you choose matters greatly to both aesthetics and sustainability. With more to consider for the latter than just using the latest LEDs and lowering energy consumption, sustainable lighting can help the natural climate as well as your budget.

Start with choosing a venue with plenty of natural light and an open plan. In the UK we don’t always have the luxury of relying on sunny weather to host stunningly lit outdoor events, but the right venue will give you the maximum value for any lighting options you choose.

62% in some areas of the UK, according to Buglife. Not only is pollination a crucial factor to maintaining crops, but by losing insect populations the displacement of food chains could have disastrous effects on entire ecosystems. You can help, try reduced lighting, have lights angled down – not skyward, and install low-level path lighting.

Automate it

Light pollution

Your lighting may not be needed all of the time. Automatic or motion sensitive lights can save on energy in bathrooms which don’t have people in at every hour of the day, storerooms for staff, or exhibition and meeting areas which lay dormant if not in use.

Many of us are living in an area which we cannot see a natural night sky. Taking responsibility to avoid contributing to light pollution only takes a couple easy steps as outlined by DarkSky. Firstly, warm coloured LED bulbs help to reduce energy and avoid harmful white or blue light sources, blue light especially at night should be avoided with its larger reach and secondly, avoid excessive or unnecessary indoor and outdoor lighting at night.

Choice of venue

Energy sources Just because the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing, doesn’t mean you can’t rely on sustainable energy sources for your event. With progressions in energy storage and clean generators you can easily power your event with clean energy. Just check out companies like Sunstore.

Retaining natural habitats Outdoor lighting at night has a devastating result on wildlife, reducing nocturnal pollinator visits to flowers by

Clean up According to Industville, dirty light fixtures emit 30% less light than clean light fixtures, lessening the brightness and quality of light your venue receives. So, if you think your lights are looking a little dim, don’t jump to replace them – lighting fixtures should be cleaned twice a year with regular maintenance and dusting, and you may be able to use less energy.

EVENT CATERING

Bon Appetit! Stay en vogue with some current event catering trends to fill your delegates and give them an event to remember. Plant List

Personal Touch

Personalising your delegates’ dining experience is an easy way to ensure they each feel special and recognised. Giving them a night to remember might include providing them with a small token they can take home with them such as personalised labels on drinks bottles, anagrammed napkins, or unique table settings which are tailored to your business or eventgoers. It shouldn’t be expensive; it just has to be thoughtful.

Being conscious of food production’s contribution to the climate crisis should be reflected in your planning. The farm to table menu trend is not only popular for supporting local suppliers but also for ensuring your food is sourced in a responsible way. To go one step further having a plant-based menu also cuts out harmful factors of the food industry, according to a 2018 study beef had the highest climate footprint of any food, while simultaneously making it simpler to provide vegan, vegetarian, and dietary requirement meals.

faux moss for a woodland effect, or a fishing net for a nautical theme can be used to create your desired illusion. Try using antique books to create height and contrast on the table and nestling tiny ornaments, such as deer for a Christmas table setting, in between each nook so each dinner guest has something new to find.

Blast from the Past

A trend of having comfort food at events is a good option if you’re wanting to create a homely atmosphere. Dishes like mac and cheese, pizza slices, nachos, or even desserts such as apple crumble and custard make guests feel relaxed and reminiscent of their past. Most of all, they won’t feel too shy to ask for second helping. Themed buffet stations make it

Van Tastic

In recent years we’ve seen a push for casual events, this is no exception when it comes to the food. Food trucks provide choice and fun for your attendees while creating a relaxed and atmospheric event. It’s never been easier to include creative cultural cuisines in fun trucks like Tuk Tuks that can be mobile and versatile.

Centre of Attention

The latest trends in table dressing include creating centrepieces which go beyond a floral display, a whole manner of unconventional ornamentation such as

casual and add to the fun.

Platter and Natter

Platters are a fun and flexible way to serve your culinary delights, you can stay in the main events area and keep the seating plan unplanned, so your delegates get to move around and meet new people.

TEAM BUILDING

Out of the Box We look at some wacky and wonderful team building opportunities to wow your clients looking something a little extraordinary. At their core, team away days are about bonding. You might think that you can’t force that result – either people will get along or they won’t and though there may be a level of truth to that theory, seeing people in a new light, tackling different challenges, and taking on new and unexpected roles humanises senior team members and allows the newest team members to show their strengths and potential. So, broaden your horizon and consider some unconventional team building– the results may surprise you.

Gorge walking

At Nae Limits in Ballinluig, Scotland the Kascadia team building challenge puts a team to the test. Designed to have a mixture of land and water-based challenges across its local gorge, this activity tests communication, strategy, and problem-solving skills as well as ensuring no one goes home dry! It’s not just Scotland which has some great gorge exploration opportunities, How Stean Gorge in the Yorkshire Dales is a great alternative in Northern England and also provides plenty of group and retreat packages.

Build a prosthetic arm

Encouraging connection in team building days can mean more than just a connection to your team. Connect with those in need and engage in David Mede’s Give a Hand Life-Changing Programme and build prosthetics which will be donated to amputees all over the world. Not only does building the prosthetic require communication, problem solving, teamwork, and creative skill but delegates can bond while providing an act of kindness.

VR simulator arcade

Not every team building opportunity has to be serious to be impactful, activities which remind us of the playfulness and carefree feelings of our youth can bond delegates through feelings of nostalgia and creativity. Virtual Reality arcades allow you to play a series of games independently or in teams while wearing a VR headset to immerse you in a new world. With VR arcades up and down the country you can unleash competitive spirit and encourage new ideas through new, cutting-edge tech.

Geocaching

Great for an active team, combine a fitness activity with a treasure hunt aspect with geocaching. Feeling connected with nature by going on a long walk gives your team an excellent opportunity to talk in a relaxing setting while feeling like they have overcome a challenge (depending on the difficulty of your route). Download the geocaching app to find hidden caches, open them to find exchangeable items or a logbook to document your findings, geocaching could take them anywhere.

Future Proof Nick Rosier, Chief Product and Customer Officer at Gther, discusses his commitment to delivering state of the art event app solutions, and looks ahead to exciting innovations for the sector.

With an event technology industry career spanning more than 15 years, Nick Rosier has a proven track record of delivering cutting-edge solutions which enhance the event experience for both organiser and attendee. His expertise lies in harnessing the latest technology trends to create user-friendly, feature-rich event apps which streamline event management, boost attendee engagement, and drive measurable results. “The Gther platform launched in October last year, and we have thought through every aspect of the event experience with event managers in mind,” explains Nick. “Whether you are simply looking for more information about the benefit to your workflow, or you’re a seasoned user seeking new ideas and inspiration, the apps within our product suite lets you explore different solutions.” Gther’s apps can come together in any number of combinations and are full of powerful features. Standouts include the VX Virtual and Hybrid tool for immersive events, the Sync Meeting Management system for efficient resource bookings, an RSVP Event Registration tool integrated with leading CRMs, and a Ticketing solution for comprehensive event e-commerce. These features, along with others, cater to a broad spectrum of events, from fully customisable conferences to meetings with efficient resource management. Nick highlights the simplicity and costeffectiveness of Gther’s apps, saying: “It’s incredibly straightforward and takes merely half an hour to get started. Our small team can provide personalised

support and add-ons including project management assistance, content management, and list management.” The pricing structure of Gther also aligns with its commitment to accessibility: “The base entry price of £150 a month isn’t exorbitant, even for solo entrepreneurs,” says Nick. “When you consider the time Gther can save you in your daily event management tasks, the investment quickly pays off. Our tools help to save time and offer a marketing solution so you can push messages to your attendees year-round rather than just at the event itself. That’s where the real value is these days.” Nick envisions empowering event professionals with Gther’s robust apps, enabling them to create unforgettable experiences and achieve their event objectives and eagerly anticipates the potential offered by this new technology: “You can make a really telling experience

in-person without a 3D world to zoom around in and without the need of whizbang live stream broadcasts,” he says. “Post-pandemic, there’s been a shift from a hardware-centric approach to softwaredriven innovation which facilitates the creation of products such as interactive sound tables and LED walls.” Nick is particularly enthralled by the utilisation of technology in venues such as the MSG Sphere in Vegas, YouTube’s new facility, where innovation takes centre stage. He believes that technology has transformed events into captivating and exciting experiences, offering attendees something truly spectacular. In terms of wearable technology, Nick foresees two main areas taking the lead: AR and VR headsets. He mentions Apple’s recent announcement of an AR headset, designed to overlay content onto the physical world, making it an ideal fit for immersive in-person events. Additionally, Nick shares insights into playful tools, saying: “Gther has been looking at brainwave-sensing headsets. We had a demo set up at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Four people put headsets on and sat in front of a Scalextric track. As they thought harder, the car went faster, and when they relaxed, it went slower. It was great fun and there are endless opportunities. At the end of the day the essence of a good event is to entertain and provide attendees with novel experiences beyond their day-today routines. Gther stands at the forefront of these innovations, offering event professionals the tools they need to create memorable and engaging experiences in an ever-evolving industry.” Gther.com

CASE STUDY

Viewing Gallery Find out how National Museums Liverpool creatively tailors its private view events prior to its exhibitions.

Each year National Museums Liverpool stages several exhibitions across its seven museums and galleries and to celebrate the opening of these exhibitions, NML hold a ‘private view’. The purpose of these is to invite stakeholders and members for a first look and to thank the teams, collaborators and artists involved. Private views are an essential part of NML’s hospitality and events offer. Since the start of 2023 NML hosted eight private views ahead of its Season Launch in October. These include the opening of freshly refurbished Renaissance, Medieval and Baroque galleries at Walker Art Gallery, a celebrity filled opening of Happiness! exhibition at Museum of Liverpool celebrating the life of Ken Dodd and the opening our summer blockbuster Return of the Gods exhibition at the World Museum.

At the opening on Happiness! at Museum of Liverpool this year the brief was a celebration of Ken Dodd’s career. Working alongside his family and friends the team came up with the idea of creating a theatre in our atrium. Our AV supplier experimented with hanging classic theatre curtains from light rails and a stage in the style of a theatre was built in the atrium. This was challenging as it had to be done in advance but at the same time not interrupting day-to-day operations of being a museum. The AV was finished off with a classic stage spotlight and attendees were treated to a performance by the Diddymen.

Each of these events is different. National Museums Liverpool’s in house event team, hosted by NML, work alongside the development team and exhibition team on the theming of the event as well as creating a bespoke menu for each event with in-house Head Chef James Behan. The venue works exclusively with AV supplier MSP Global on inspiring, exciting ideas. The venue created a bespoke canape menu inspired by Ken Dodd’s Jam Butty Book, working with the exhibition stakeholders as well as a jam cocktail in recognition of Ken’s love of the jam butty. Guests were treated to; mini beef and onion soup, the Merseyside chip butty, ‘Broken Biscuit Repair works’ – mini-ice cream cones with broken biscuit and ‘Slapstick Smash’ – mini lobster rolls. Gin cocktails were also provided by Liverpool Gin our official drinks partner for private views.

28

As well as Happiness! NML reopened its Rennaisance Rediscovered gallery at Walker Art Gallery with an evening of celebration. The theme for this private view is taken from the gallery name – Rennaisance with a new and updated take. Working again with our suppliers and our in-house chefs guests were treated to an evening of music from Liverpool Renaissance Singers, with their classical take on contemporary songs, and decorations created by Dutch Flower Shop themed around popular flowers from the period, again with a contemporary twist. The menu featured: game terrine, pear and saffron compote, polenta chip, aged parmesan and herb crumb, fig bread crisp, fig, goats’ cheese and aged balsamic as well as a take on the classic egg custard tart. Private views are a pivotal part of exhibitions at National Museums Liverpool, a venue that challenges expectations of what an exhibition opening is and create memorable, unique experiences for its partners, members, and visitors. It all comes with the challenges of tight deadlines, tight budgets, and working across departments to achieve this.

SUSTAINABILITY

Green vs Gimmick Carbon offsetting and credits serve as tools which our sector employs to reduce its carbon footprint. However, do these measures genuinely promote eco-friendliness or are they merely a surface-level display of green initiatives? Sustainability and environmental responsibility are the buzzwords in today’s events sector, with venues and other key industry players all keen to reduce their environmental footprint. Enter carbon offsetting and carbon credits, touted as powerful tools to help them go green. But the question lingers: are these measures truly promoting eco-friendliness or are they just a superficial display of green intentions?

Understanding carbon offset

In simple terms, carbon offsetting is when a business invests in projects to balance out its carbon emissions. These can stem from various sources such as energy use, transportation, and waste. Such projects can encompass energy-efficient upgrades, waste reduction, or support for local conservation efforts. In return for their participation, businesses receive carbon credits, representing the emissions reduction achieved by the supported projects. Essentially, it’s a way to lessen impact on climate change while addressing environmental concerns.

The promise of carbon offset

Carbon offsetting certainly holds great potential for significantly reducing the environmental impact of the hospitality sector as a whole. Supporting initiatives in renewable energy, waste reduction, and reforestation for example, demonstrates a commitment to sustainability while actively contributing to global climate change mitigation. Additionally, knowledge of a company’s participation in such schemes appeals to eco-conscious travellers seeking environmentally friendly accommodations and clients eager to make a positive contribution.

Too good to be true?

However, carbon offsetting isn’t without its challenges. Critics worry that it might allow some businesses to appear green while continuing with unsustainable practices. Greenpeace go so far as to describe it as: “The most popular and sophisticated form of greenwash around.” Ensuring accurate accounting of emissions reductions is crucial to prevent any double-counting, where the same reduction is claimed multiple times, but as Rubies in the Rubble founder Jenny Costa wrote of carbon offsetting in The Grocer recently: “In practice, this unregulated market is hard to govern and there are many methodologies for how the offsets are calculated.” Pedro Martins Barata, Associate Vice President for carbon markets at the Environmental Defence Fund (EDF) and Co-chair of the expert panel at the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) agreed: “You do have a system where it’s everyone for themselves, nobody checks the quality of offsets.” However, he emphasised that change was possible, stating: “I’m worried about credit quality very much – and ICVCM has been set up to change significantly the landscape of carbon credits.” That’s not to say that all carbon credit schemes are a product of greenwashing, especially when paired with other sustainability initiatives within your business. Stephen Parkinson, Green Team Leader and HOSPA Sustainability Champion Award Winner at The Last Drop Hotel, told us why the hotel was in the process of setting up a contract with carbon offsetting business More Trees: “We looked at a lot of options, which were more

30

intense and in-depth. You could take it as far as you want but there are a lot of costs and responsibilities involved. Currently with where we are with the business and our responsibilities, we do quite a lot to manage our carbon footprint, and looking at the offsetting, this is quite a good, easily accessible route that can be applied.”

The path to true sustainability

In summary, carbon offsetting and credits have a role to play in making the events industry greener, yet their success hinges on transparency, authenticity, and a long-term commitment to environmental responsibility. Businesses need to view carbon offsetting as part of a broader sustainability strategy which includes reducing emissions at the source. Whether carbon offsetting genuinely benefits the environment or is merely a green facade depends on the individual company’s intentions and actions. When done correctly, it can enhance their green credentials. Nevertheless, it should not be a substitute for genuine sustainability efforts. Ultimately, the industry’s future depends on embracing carbon offsetting as a complement, not a gimmick, for a truly eco-friendly sector. The key lies in achieving a balance between effective carbon offsetting and authentic, on-the-ground sustainability practices, ensuring that going green is more than just a trend, but a lasting commitment to a greener tomorrow.

INDUSTRY OPINION

COLUMN Looking Long Term Susan Tanner, CEO of the National Outdoor Events Association, explores what the future of the industry could look like. Later this month (22nd November), the National Outdoor Event Association’s Annual Convention & Awards returns. Over the last few years, the tone of the event has reflected the often-desperate state of the industry, while at the same time looking to rebuilding for the future. The event has explored business survival, responsibility, accountability, and recovery. This year it’s different though, and we’re able to look, perhaps for the first time, at a longer-term future. That’s not to say the industry is out of the darkness. There is no doubt that events, and the suppliers who serve them, have been left with myriad of legacy issues. However, from a NOEA point of view,

businesses are better off knowing what a possible future could look like, not least as they lay down plans to negotiate it. That is what this convention is all about. This will of course include incredibly prescient subjects such as sustainability. We also return to a popular subject among attendees, how brands look at events from a sponsorship and marketing point of view. Continuing this commercially sided view of events, we’re looking at ticketing technology is constantly branching forwards and offering easier and more sustainable ticketing solutions which benefit both delegates and event organisers alike.

Tech is another quickly changing industry, which directly affects our own. Web 5.0, the Metaverse, augmented vs virtual realities, and everything in between. In a world where events can be completely virtual, what are the long-term prospects for outdoor experiences? All of this and more will be up for discussion at the NOEA’s annual conference. All in all, it’s going to be another enthralling conference. We continue to push our ambitions in terms of the subjects we cover and the opinions we bring together.

COLUMN NOEA New Talent Noea.org.uk

Jim Winship, Secretary of the Event Industry Forum, discusses the economic position the industry finds itself in. Contrary to some media reports, it has been a tough year for many outdoor cultural events. Faced by rising costs, shortages of volunteers and staff generally, plus the impact of the cost of living crisis on ticket sales, many events such as festivals have failed to make money and in some cases have had to be cancelled at the last minute. For an industry that generated almost £40 million and employed over half a million people before the pandemic hit, these are challenging times. When the Chancellor stands up in November to give his Autumn Statement, a reduction in VAT for events would go a long way to helping the industry get back on its feet.

But there is also more that could be done tax-wise to help the UK economy grow generally. One tax factor that seriously holds back UK economic growth is the VAT threshold. There is an absolute disincentive for many individuals or small businesses to grow their enterprises beyond a turnover of £85,000 as immediately they go over that amount they have to pay VAT on the whole lot. That means that they need to increase income by over £20,000 just to stand still! This anomaly could be easily remedied by simply applying VAT to sales over £85,000. Such a move would also help to ease shortages of freelance workers, in particular, as they would have a real incentive to work longer if they did not have to keep themselves below the £85,000 threshold to avoid paying VAT on

32

all their turnover. The other sticking point for tax is the reluctance of many on benefits to work longer than around 16 hours a week because they find their benefits being eroded. Under the current system many workers refuse to work longer hours because they see little gain in doing so. This is an age-old problem which continues to impact the available UK workforce. At the very least it warrants a detailed review into how to incentivise benefits claimants to get fully back into work. While I am not an economist, and I’m sure there are counter-arguments to these things, action in these three areas could make all the difference not only to events but to business generally. PROMOTION

Take a Stand The Royal Arnouries will be showcasing its new event spaces and Christmas Party Packages at CHS Brimingham this October The Royal Armouries Conference and Events team will be taking its own brand of premiere venue, conference and events experience on the road when it takes part in the CHS Birmingham event this October. With 13 versatile rooms that can cater from 20 to 2,500 delegates, striking waterfront view and the stunning, award-winning Royal Armouries Museum in its arsenal, it’s easy to see why it has welcomed hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic delegates to the city of Leeds for almost a quarter century. One of the reasons for its enduring success is that it doesn’t stand still. The organisation and talented in-house team, are constantly looking at ways to improve the visitor experience, exceed customer expectations and never say no to a creative idea, however extraordinary. Venue Director, Ben Campbell explains: “We are always on the lookout for what we can do

bigger and better, experimenting with ideas and concepts to ‘wow’ clients. We’re finding post-pandemic, that many of our clients are looking to extend the immersive experience outdoors before delegates enter the venue. “As well as a great in-house team, the city has a fantastic roster of creative, inventive and innovative event companies who share this vision and can work with us. So, if our customers want a full-scale fairground, craft market or the Leeds equivalent of MIPIM, then we have the wherewithal to make it happen.” The venue has undergone a £1.25 million

refurbishment recently that reflects the current theme of bringing the outdoors in. Lots of natural, sustainable materials, textures and a warm, neutral palette, with an occasional colour pop, has created several smaller meetings spaces, that look closer to a cosy, comfortable lounge with all the mod-cons, than a sterile office space. They bring an instant sense of calm and bonhomie to a meeting, removing any need for a cringeworthy ‘icebreakers’ as delegates can easily get the conversation started over a sustainably sourced coffee. Sustainability has been an important element of the Royal Armouries Events business long before farm to fork and nose to tail food principles were ‘a thing’. Food provenance and locally sourced products are an important ingredient to the menu and with the fecund Yorkshire larder on the doorstep, Executive Head Chef, John Brodie, Senior Head Chef Michael Gromyko and the team already produce some mouth-watering worldflavours sourced from fantastic, seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Take food for the mind and the body a step further with the Mindful Menus, designed to help fuel a productive session by ensuring blood sugar levels are maintained with nutrient dense foods that have a low Glycaemic index. So, no post-lunch slump from your delegates with menus designed and developed by registered nutritionist Luxey Dayanandan and Executive Head Chef, John Brodie. Committed to the planet, the seasonal menus are created with the planet in mind to ensure they include sustainably and ethically sourced ingredients and a plant forward philosophy to fuel conference and events. It’s been quite the year for the Royal Armouries conference and events team and for those who, like the Venga Boys, like to party, they’re looking to bring 2023 to a close with a recordbreaking Christmas party season. The Royal Armouries Christmas do is a bit of a legendary experience and this year’s spectacular includes a…. Yodel Lady Whooooo! Alpine Experience or if the bustle of Times Square and Downtown Manhattan is more in keeping the

New York New York state of mind instead. Either way, as an exclusive event or joiner party, guests are guaranteed an evening full of sumptuous food and drink bound to get the party started and get into the festive spirit with a Yorkshire twist. The Royal Armouries will be bringing a little bit of Leeds and Yorkshire spirit to the Midlands this Halloween. They’ve been proud to host CHS Leeds for a number of years and are looking forward to seeing the show in Birmingham and makes lots of exciting new connections. The West Midlands Growth Company showcases why Birmingham and the West Midlands is the beating heart of business events in the UK.

Birmingham and the West Midlands has a track record of success in providing the best welcome for meetings, conferences and events. Nowhere else in the country is as easy to reach, and with more than 121,000 bed spaces across the region and a host of world-class event facilities, it’s no surprise that the West Midlands attracts more business trips than the national average and more international business visitors than any other destination outside London. Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands, said: “Our region is increasingly becoming the destination of choice for some of the UK’s most significant conferences and exhibitions.

West Midlands. We are proud to be home to 11 Michelin-starred restaurants and the best Asian cooking in the world. Our infrastructure is second to none. We have the largest venue campus in the UK at the NEC, some 200,000 sq. metres of event space complemented by our universities across two cities: Birmingham and Wolverhampton. Many of our sporting venues also have incredible conference and event facilities.”

Bouncing back

New research compiled by RJS Associates for the West Midlands Growth Company

shows that the region is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic quicker than the UK average. Last year, the West Midlands hosted 8.3 million local, national and international delegates at 81,700 business events, generating £1.9 billion of direct spend. Its business events performance was at 78% of 2019 levels, compared to the national average of 73%. With a full calendar of events now back at major West Midlands venues including the NEC, it is expected that the region’s business events sector will return to normal during the 2023/24 financial year. “Our outstanding connectivity, broad choice of venues and plentiful hotel accommodation all help our cause – combined with our positive attitude and the warmth of the welcome visitors have come to expect.” Neil Rami, Chief Executive of the West Midlands Growth Company, added: “It’s the experience delegates get here that brings events back time and again. Abbott, who is using the show as the official launch of his book, Events Are Easy… .

who were involved heavily in the sustainability and accessibility policies around the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last year, will be sharing their thoughts on accessible and values driven events, while Neil Thompson, Founder of the Delegate Wranglers, will be talking about building a positive space on social media. Entrepreneur and one of the minds behind the Love Life Live Well podcast, Jason Allan Scott will also be talking on how to build profile and brand through podcasting and sharing business and life lessons. The day will finish with Nick Elson, a Motivational Speaker, who will wrap up the conference in his own, inhibitable style.

Dr Paul, an Event Planner, Entertainer, Speaker, and Author, will discuss why many businesses believe that what we do, as an industry, is easy. But for those of us who already understand that just isn’t so, he also dives into how we can make life a little less difficult. Reflections from Dr Paul, a deep thinker, a seasoned and practical event planner, and an entertaining speaker his advice makes an unmissable spot on the itinerary. In other sessions, the show is also looking at more practical guidance for event planners. Following audience requests from last year, there are sessions on managing social media and sustainability, and the building blocks of organising events. The Bulb,

Learning Curve Dr Libby Carter, Course Leader and Lecturer in Sport and Event Management at the College of Business, Digital Transformation and Entrepreneurship at Birmingham City University discusses the importance of industry and educational collaboration. Our course here at Birmingham City University aligns with a strong philosophy of employment and industry focus, where we encourage placements and work experience and embed industry within the course at every availability. Within their second year our students are presented with the opportunity to attend Events Week Live, hosted by the NEC Group and head of events Michelle Baldwin. It’s a fantastic week where students gain behind the scenes access to event spaces and event managers from across the West Midlands. As a result, students are given an industry mentor and many have gone on to work for the NEC Group both within their final year of study and after graduation.

While attending Event Week Live, I was fortunate enough to attend the presentation from the Association of Event Venue (AEV) project manager, Alden Arnold. During the network session, I was keen to chat to Alden who explained the Academic Associate Member structure and how it would benefit our students through commitment to providing time to help them gain insights into the real-life experience of working in the venue events industry, something we strongly value as a course team. Academic Associate membership opens doors to the event venue community for students, providing the option to secure work experience or site visits. Collaboration gives academic members

38

an audience and opportunity to network with AEV member venues giving students a broad learning experience. Membership also gives us access to circa 50 member venues in the UK and around the world and the AEV will help utilise these connections to initiate and evolve mentor programmes and placements enabling students to apply their theory knowledge and to experience the nature of working in an event venue. We are very excited by our membership and are keen to make the most of all the opportunities the AEV provide! Aev.org.uk

Data collected by RJS Associates in a recent report for the West Midlands Growth Company found that the region’s 2022 business events performance was at approximately 78% of 2019 levels, whereas the national average stood at 73%. In 2022 the West Midlands hosted 8.3 million local, national, and international delegates, equating to 11.6 million delegate days at 81,700 business events. Ian Taylor, Managing Director for Conventions and Exhibitions at the NEC Group commented: “The MICE sector is an integral part of our business across NEC Group venues including the NEC, ICC, and Vox Conference Venue. We’ve seen a strong appetite for events of this kind in the past year, with the ICC having hosted more than 400 in the last 12 months, welcoming over 350,000 visitors from around the globe to the West Midlands.”

ExCeL London Enhances Security

Home of the UK event industry’s biggest conferences, International Confex and Event Tech Live, ExCeL London has recently partnered with security company ITS UK & Ireland to enhance the safety and security of the venue through a detection canine team. Head of Security at ExCeL, Henry Havis, who also chairs the AEV’s Security Working Group, said: “The safety and security of everyone who comes to ExCeL London – be it event organisers, exhibitors, suppliers, staff or our four million annual visitors – remains our utmost importance.” AEV Announce Board Changes After its annual general meeting of the Association of Event Venues held in Manchester Central, the AEV has announced some personnel changes to the board. Its Chair Shaun Hinds, CEO of Manchester Central and Vice Chair Ian Taylor, Managing Director of NEC will continue their roles for a second year on the board.

“It’s been an amazing decade or so for the Fully Charged Show. The changes we are making are designed to ensure that the next decade will be even better still.”

ICC Birmingham Invests

In the past year ICC Birmingham has spent over £3 million on technological advancements which will improve delegate experience in the venue. Its most recent progression being a new larger media wall to invite in delegates upon arrival. Other updated instalments include new camera equipment, audio and lighting rigs, and a new projector system. Simon Whale, Technical Manager at ICC Birmingham, said: “Our focus on enhancing the technology in the venue represents a commitment to our customers and organisers in delivering the highest quality events. “We’re keen to listen to our clients and react to their needs. For example, in recent times we have seen an appetite for hybrid and live streamed events which therefore meant an investment to increase our filming and streaming capabilities.”

Shaun commented: “I am pleased to report that the AEV has enjoyed yet another prosperous year, effectively addressing the challenges and providing unwavering support to its members; achieved through the commitment of our board and central AEV team.

Talent Retention Looks to Students

“Our working groups remain one of our most valued services. With 15 groups currently running, we have hosted 48 meetings in the past year. These groups proved indispensable during the pandemic and have seen record levels of participation and activity. Thanks to our members for their contribution.”

The latest campaign will see both organisations focus on educating potential employees on the benefits of working within the independent food and drink sector, specifically relating to events. Both NCASS and NOEA have extensive networks within both universities and high school education, and the associations will work to encourage the celebrating of these roles as credible career paths while raising awareness of apprenticeship opportunities open to employers looking to gain new talent.

The National Outdoor Events Association (NOEA) has announced the second of a series of campaigns with The Nationwide Caterers Association (NCASS), this time steered towards attracting and keeping talent within the events industry.

Nick Summers, Managing Director of NCASS, comments: “We really want to create a sector of choice, for people starting out in their careers, looking for a change or for those coming to the end of their careers and are looking for a different lifestyle – this is an industry that embraces so many transferable skills. It’s not just about transient workers or students looking for summer jobs, we need to present our industry as one that offers professional careers.” The campaign will also outline the many benefits of a career in events covering opportunities for growth, salary, and personal development.

Coventry and Warwickshire offers a range of venues with everything from modern to historical and well-connected to tranquil.

From the largest venue, which can host around 7,000 delegates in its exhibition hall to holding a meeting in a medieval castle; Coventry and Warwickshire is a thriving hub of business and culture. Combining the historically significant architecture and industry of Coventry, with the rural splendour of rural Warwickshire, the region offers an experience that is unique, focused, and innovative. Coventry and Warwickshire are riding the wave of a series of major international events, underlining its reputation as an established conference, business, and event destination. The region’s conference bureau, Conference Coventry and Warwickshire, provides a free event enquiry service and has seen great success in driving national and international business to the region - maintaining a regular presence at key trade shows such as The Meetings Show and CHS. In the heart of England, Coventry and Warwickshire is one of the best-connected regions in the country, with 75% of the country’s population within a three-hour reach. Coventry is less than one hour from London by train and only 20 minutes from Birmingham by train, which has led to the flourishing of event bookings in the area.

High-quality, modern, and well-connected venues span the county – from North

Warwickshire to Leamington Spa, and down to idyllic Stratford-upon-Avon in the south of the county. Enjoy the rolling countryside and bring some peace and tranquillity to your event with beautiful views and unique venues.

vibrant destination rich in history, heritage, and culture, with huge diversity from the city of Coventry to the surrounding rural towns. Despite the challenges facing the sector, we are continuing to see investment in business events across the region. “We’re proud to be home to many large sectors including automotive, advanced manufacturing and engineering – but also providing a launch pad in the UK for sectors such as autonomous vehicles and game design, with Leamington Spa becoming known as ‘Silicon Spa’ with the gaming industry booming in the town. The region already has a huge amount to offer event organisers and we’re very excited about how we are continuing to develop that offering.” Conferencecoventryandwarwickshire.co.uk

Coventry is an appetising destination for foodies, with Warwickshire boasting 12 Michelin-star-winning restaurants – and the range in the region is continuing to grow. Paul Jones, Managing Director of Conference Coventry and Warwickshire, said: “It’s been an incredibly exciting past few years for our region and we are confident that the benefits brought by recent major events have further strengthened our offering for event organisers. EVENT TECH

Make it Stick Sarah Thackray, Co-founder and Director of BeaconHouse Events, explains how to put a meaningful ESG strategy in place, and how to stick to it.

The events industry has a significant impact on the world around us, and creating an ESG strategy that outlines your commitment to the environment, society, and governance is no longer a ‘nice to have’ for agencies in the UK. While there has been some progress over the last few years on ways to create more sustainable events, how we operate within our businesses is intrinsically linked to the work that we deliver for clients and the impact our sector has on wider communities. As events professionals, we can make more educated decisions about how to make real change if we look at the whole picture, rather than just taking actions in silo. Creating a meaningful ESG strategy that encompasses both internal and external activities takes time, investment, and commitment – it should be something that you live and breathe, not just a tick-box exercise that sits in a drawer. Here are some key things to remember as you navigate the journey:

Avoid grand gestures

Seek external expertise

Work with experts in the field of ESG to help shape your vision and give an outside perspective on your strategy. Experts in ESG have a much broader understanding of the issues facing multiple sectors and can positively challenge and sense-check some of the ideas on the table. Knowledge sharing is the key in this emerging and fast evolving space. The horizon is constantly shifting when it comes to ESG that is it pertinent to take advice from someone who lives and breathes it every day.

Create an action plan

While your strategy sets out your commitments and vision when it comes to ESG, an independent action plan is a roadmap of how you are going to make it happen. Often there are so many ideas on how to approach this that it can be overwhelming and progress stagnates. Work together with your team to establish key priorities, realistic action based tasks, and timescales and check in with each other to see how things are progressing.

Create a strategy that is realistic to achieve with the time and resources that you have within your business. Focus on consistent, considering changes that will make a difference to your people and planet and that align with your purpose as an organisation. ‘Greenwashing’ has become more and more apparent in recent years, and when your ESG strategies simply become a PR exercise, they lose their value entirely.

Communicate with everyone

By communicating your ambitions with your clients, supply chain, and partners you widen the pool of people who want to support you along the way, but don’t forget to communicate why this strategy is important to your internal team too. Change or new focus can be scary, and by helping everyone understand their part of the process and why it matters, you can move forward together.

Collaborate

Rather than trying to figure things out on your own, take time to talk to other people in your sector to understand the challenges they have been facing and to celebrate success. We are stronger together and there is no need to be competing and gatekeeping information, sharing knowledge is only going to empower our clients, and each other to produce better work that is good for people and our planet. BeaconHouse Events announced its four-year ESG strategy in early 2023. The strategy aims to deliver considered, achievable actions, help the business reach responsible carbon neutrality, and drive sector-wide change from inside the organisation. Beaconhouse-events.co.uk

Don’t forget about S and G

It is tempting to only focus on ways to reduce your carbon impact, like banning single-use plastics, choosing plant-based catering for meetings, or advocating for green transport options, but it is just as important to consider how you can have a positive, and long-lasting impact on the communities that you work in, and how your business is governed. Having your CSR ambitions and policy commitments all in one place makes everything work in harmony, and you can ensure that all the work that you are doing complements each other and the overall business vision.

PROMOTION

It may not be on a motorway network, but if you are looking for a place to really treat a team or clients that is away from it all, this is it. Nestled in Derbyshire’s divine town of Buxton, in the heart of the Peak District and a perfect backdrop for inside and outdoor events, Buxton Crescent is just a short train ride from some of the North and Midlands’ busiest cities and transports you to a different life. The crescent shaped venue’s £70 million refurb gives event organisers 5 star spaces, accomodation and dining that will be remembered. Buxton Crescent is the reincarnation of two once-upon-a-time, grand and gracious hotels, well known throughout Georgian England as the premier resting place for stylish spa seekers who came from all over the country to bathe in the thermal waters of Buxton. A spa not like anything you’ve experienced. Bedrooms really are supreme, a range of different sizes available, with views of this charming town, the hotel offers seven event spaces, from the Boardroom to the

spectacular Assembly Room that can accommodate up to 186 delegates for a theatre style meeting or 120 guests for a seated banquet with a grand, elegant ambiance. The hotel is the ultimate choice for your meeting or event, providing a space to communicate and create ideas and motivate. The Executive Chef has created specially-designed menus offering flexibility with healthy options and specific dietary requirements. And despite the historic nature of this venue, Wi-Fi, natural daylight and air conditioning is standard with the latest IT and AV equipment available in all rooms. But the piece de resistance is of course the spa. Boasting a wide range of treatments, from traditional beauty therapies to wellness and holistic, three pools include the impressive indooroutdoor rooftop pool, a relaxation pool, with its atmospheric dark ceiling pierced with shafts of natural light, and the fully

refurbished Victorian baths with many original features, which is filled daily with Buxton’s thermal water. And if that’s not enough, guests can enjoy a salt cave, an ice fountain, and numerous editions of a sauna to keep them more than relaxed after a busy day. It’s the venue that has it all, don’t put it aside due to the remote location, in fact embrace it, because your delegates will love it here. Gala events, conferences or a team builder, I challenge you to find a venue like this in the beautiful north. Put it on your radar.
