Between 2017/18 and 2023/24, rough sleeping in Liverpool increased by 141%

FatherJamesNugentwasbornon3rdMarch 1822inHunterStreet,Liverpool,atatimewhen thecitywasrapidlytransforming.Oncea semi-ruralrivertown,Liverpoolhadbecomea bustlingcentreoftrade,immigration,and emigration Withthisgrowthcame widespreadpoverty,overcrowding,andcrime. ThousandsoffamiliesfleeingtheIrishFamine arrivedonlytofindsqualorandstruggle.
Ordainedin1846atSt.Nicholas’Church, Liverpool,FatherNugentbeganhisministryat St.Alban’s,Blackburn,beforemovingtoWigan andeventuallyreturningtohishomeparishof St.Nicholas’in1849.Hisworkquicklyturnedto thecity’smostvulnerable;homelesschildren, theimprisoned,andfamilieslivinginextreme hardship
For22yearsasChaplainatWaltonGaol, FatherNugentstudiedthecausesofcrime, believinginaddressingitsrootsratherthanits consequences.Hefamouslysaid:
“Thereisnomorepracticalschoolto studymankindthanwithinthewallsof aprison.”
In1854,hecalledameetingatLiverpoolTown Hallwithleadingcitizensandchurchmen, urgingthemto“Savetheboy”;acampaignto protectchildrenlivingonthestreets Helater expandedthisto“Savethechild”,coiningthe phrase“Nobody’sChildren”forthosewithouta home,family,orhope.
FatherNugentbelievedchangehadtobe practical.Hisworkfocusedoneducation, employment,emigration,andopportunity.

Alongsidefoodprovision,thePantryoffersa relaxedandinformalmeetingplacewherepeople feelsafe,welcomedandvalued Visitorscanenjoy acuppa,sometimesasliceofcake,andtakethe timetogettoknoweachotherandtheir neighbours.Onanaverageweek,weprovidefood toaround43people
ThePantryoperatesonamembershipbasis,with memberspayingasmallweeklyfee-currently£5 -andinreturnselectingatleast10itemsoffood. TheNugentFoodPantryisafast-pacedand welcomingenvironment,withmanypeople comingthroughourdoorseachweek

EveryTuesday,theyhelpsetupthespace, welcomepantrymembers,andofferfriendly guidanceandsupportaspeopledotheir shopping They’realwaysreadywithawarm smile,ahelpfulsuggestion,andoften,agood chattoo!
Overtime,they’vebecomeafamiliarand trustedpartoftheweekformanyofour regularmembers,buildingfriendshipsanda truesenseofcommunity
VolunteerslikeMaryandFrankareatthe heartofwhatwedo,creatingnotjustaccess tofood,butaplaceofdignity,connection andsupport.
OurNugentPantrycouldnot operatewithoutourvolunteers, andwearehugelygratefulto allourvolunteerswhoeach weekchoosetosupportour work.Byvolunteeringyour time,youwillbehelping NugentPantryprovidefoodto thosewhoneeditinourcity.

AmassivethankyoutoGleeds,Nugentvolunteers andthestudentsfromLiverpoolJohnMoores UniversityfortheirfantasticsupportinDecember.
EachyearNugentreceivesdonationsoftoysto distributetochildrenandfamilieswhomight struggletogiveorreceivetoysatChristmas This yearwereceivedhundredsoftoysfromour supportersacrossparishes,schoolsandcompanies andbusinesses.
Theygenerouslygavetheirtimetohelpsortthrough ourToyAppealdonations,ensuringeverythingwas readytobesharedwithschoolsacrossourlocal communities,helpingtospreadalittleChristmas magictochildrenandfamilieswhoneeditmost.
Lastyear,Nugentdistributedalmost800toysacross 26schools Inaddition,wehavealsobeenableto handouttoystofamilieslivinginhostelsandthose atriskofhomelessness.Asaresult,in2025over400 childrenreceivedpresentsviaNugent.
TheVolunteerBefrienderroleplaysavitalpart withinNugent,givingthepeoplewesupportthe opportunitytomeetnewpeople,share interests,buildconfidenceandformmeaningful friendships.
Designedtobeflexible,therolecanfitaround everydaylife Kayleebalanceshervolunteering alongsideworkandfamilycommitments, showingthatit’spossibletomakeareal differenceevenwithabusyschedule.Shehas beenaVolunteerBefrienderfornearlytwo years.
