Out of 10,000 participants nationwide, Northern Mindanao ranks fifth among Sugarbook users with 7,412 sugar babies and 1,709 sugar daddies on a Sugarbook survey raising concerns about the normalization of sugar dating and the rise of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and infant mortality cases.
Teen sugar dating surges in PH

19-year-old working student Stephanie opted for online sugar dating on Sugarbook, the leading platform in the Philippines with 280,000 sugar babies out of 400,000 Filipino users as of December 2023. Based on Sugarbook’s data, the monthly allowance of Filipino sugar babies is approximately 52,000, while the IBON Foundation revealed that the average daily nominal minimum wage rate nationwide is 454 as of October 2024. “It speaks volumes about the socioeconomic pressures young people experience, where basic amenities and a good education are not always within easy reach,” Sugarbook founder Darren Chan stated during an interview with Rappler. However, this trend has also been rising among adolescents in a poor household since they are encouraged to engage in sex work to fulfill the basic needs of their families. “Kapag walang-wala na kami kahit pambili ng bigas, sinasabihan ako ng nanay ko na magbf ka ng mayaman,” a participant in Manzanilla et al. (2024) said, explaining that her parents expect her boyfriend to support them. Meanwhile, the Commission on Population and Development Municipal Population Officer for Agusan del Sur Jean D. Miel explained that sugar dating raises significant issues around the well-being of teens. “The emotional toll of not having relationships based on love and care could hinder their ability to form healthy connections later in life,” Miel believed.
