COLORS AND HOODING This type of ceremony was started in European universities in the 11th or 12th century to celebrate graduating students as they began their career past schooling. Hoods were used mostly for practical purposes to keep warm in the medieval libraries, which is where the ceremonies would take place. Universities then began giving different color hoods to different academic majors to distinguish the students from each major from one another. U.S. universities adopted doctoral hooding starting in the colonial era. Starting in 1755, Princeton University in New Jersey was the first to have their students wear certain academic dress daily to indicate their field of study. This was meant to mirror their European counterparts but only lasted through the beginning of the nineteenth century. After that, colleges transitioned to only using academic dress for special occasions. When looking at the regalia, there are multiple parts that each have significance. There are three stripes on the arms, which, as legend has it, are meant to represent the three pillars of doctoral scholarship: academic curiosity, academic honesty, and academic courage. The hood is four feet long, which is longer than the bachelor’s regalia (three feet) and master’s regalia (three and a half feet). The hood is lined on the inside with a color indicative of the university, and the outside is trimmed with colors specific to the subject the student studied. Each degree dons a different color to represent the values and tradition of their professions. The black and red lining represents Northeastern University and physical therapy’s color is teal, to be associated with healing and protecting.
