WARS Six photographers shoot to win in a New Times photography competition BY ASHLEY SCHWELLENBACH
L
ast fall, New Times put out a call for photographers willing to engage in spirited battle for the title of Chief-Head-Honcho Photographer. Forty-six answered the call to arms, and from that talented pool six were chosen: Brittany App (appsphotography. com), a professional photographer with epic dreads. Atascadero photographer Adrianne Bonafede (adriannebonafede.com). Kamil Baranowski (kamilkonrad.com), an interactive web designer, graphic artist, and photographer from Shell Beach. Joseph Gorman (joegormanphoto.com), a digital editor and photographer from Grover Beach—quietest of the six. Cuesta College student Will Headley (willheadley. com), the youngest of the lot. And retiree and Morro Bay resident Howard Ignatius (howardignatius.com). The parameters were simple. The war consisted of six individual battles: four location shoots between April and August and two take-home challenges to

be completed by Aug. 15. Two days before the shoots, the contestants were sent the location. But until they arrived, they had no idea what they would find there and had only one hour to photograph. And when the hour was up, they had just one week to edit and turn in their photographs. These are their battle trophies, presented anonymously to ensure the winner is selected on merit alone. It’s your job to decide who won the war. You’ll find a ballot on page 47. Select your favorite body of work from each of the six challenges, along with the very best photograph from the entire war. Ballots are due to New Times by Monday, Oct. 4, at 5 p.m. Ballots are also available online and can be returned to photogwars@newtimesslo.com. Managing Editor Ashley Schwellenbach is more warrior than photographer. Send mighty pens to aschwellenbach@newtimesslo.com.
