From the President As many of you may have heard on the news, there has been talk of a new Wind Farm being built in Clay County. While some are very interested in having it built many are opposed and for good reason. North Texas Home Builders Association as a whole is not taking a stand for or against the Wind Farm but the Government Affairs Committee has been reaching out to stay educated on what is happening. The Wind Farm is a great concern to SAFB which in turn can cause concern for the economy of Wichita Falls. According to a story written by Matt McCullock on Texomashomepage.com, base officials say the location of the new turbines could interfere with SAFB flight training because of the proximity to flight paths and possible interference with radar. This interference becomes a major concern for the safety of the pilots when tracking aircraft. The base says they are informing residence and the wind farm company that if the wind farm is built both pilot safety and the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program that has been at Sheppard for 35 years can be at risk. “What makes us special is we teach Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program here where 13 nations from Euro-NATO partners come to train,” said Lt. Col. Mitchell Cok. “Some of them exclusively train their fighter pilots here. It’s the only base in the world that does this kind of training. Continues on page 6

It’s Parade Time! The 64th Annual Parade of Homes kicks off June 3rd. Wow how fast time flies. This year the Parade of Homes & Special Events Committee have been listening to suggestions and gone out on a limb to make various changes. Instead of 10 consecutive days it has been changed to two consecutive weekends. June 3rd-5th and 10th-12th. Ticket prices have increased from $6.00 to $8.00. We want to thank the Parade of Homes & Special Events Committee who volunteer their time to meet and work out all the details, put out banners and get the signs and magazines ready for each of the builders. “Our primary concern is wind farms inside 25 miles and that’s where it starts to have a really big impact to the base,” Lt. Col. Cok said. “If we can’t see those aircraft, we can’t keep them separated and we can’t ensure safety of flight. So we’re really trying to get the word out so people know as they are making decisions about where to put the wind farms.” At least one Clay County Commissioner is opposed to adding more wind farms in Clay County. The general consensus of how the NTHBA can help at his time, based on Henry Florsheim with the Wichita Falls Chamber of Commerce who came and spoke to the Government Affairs Committee and receiving an email from Jon Larvick President/CEO of the Sheppard Military Affairs Committee, is to help educate people on the potential impacts of the wind farms and for everyone to voice their opinions to local, county, state and federal representatives. Below is the information Mr. Larvick sent in his email: During a recent public presentation, Mr. John Greer (Clay County against Wind Farms), provided information regarding his position on wind farms. He highlighted the unreliability of wind as an energy source, its lack of economic viability without government subsidy, the long-term negative effects on property values, and the following actions available to fight wind farms: A. Educating people on wind farms in addition to the fact that wind farms have noise, appearance, birds, and heal ramifications B. Educating property owners on land value impacts (decline over time), access rights (power lines, roads, etc.), and questionable clauses in leases Continues on page 7

Dennis discusses South Sudan mission with home builders By: Lee Grace
Local home builder and owner of Dennis Company, Chuck Dennis spoke to the May Membership Luncheon of the North Texas Home Builders View of the Jonglei Christian Vocational Boarding School located in Bor, South Sudan. Association about the work of the Starfish Foundation in South Sudan. Dennis and fellow Wichitan Dennis Cady have made 14 trips to South Sudan in the past four years helping the citizens of that war-torn country. They are part of a team that has built a vocational school and boarding school in Bor, a city just north of the capital of Juba. South Sudan is one of the newest nations on the planet, becoming a nation on July 9, 2011. From 1983 through 2005, South Sudan was the site of the longest civil war in African history. More than 2.2 million persons were killed and four million were displaced. Dennis noted, “An entire generation grew up in refugee camps or lived as child soldiers. The infrastructure and the schools in this country were virtually destroyed during this civil war.” He added that even today, there are no paved roads except in Juba. Few girls attend school because they spend their entire day carrying water to their homes. Because of the long civil war with Sudan, Dennis noted that 70 percent of the population is less than 30 years of age. “About 80 percent are illiterate.” On their first fact-finding trip in Dec., 2011, Dennis and Cady met with the governor of the state of Jonglei where Bor is located. He asked them to build a vocational school along with a boarding school because vocational schools are desperately needed. “Education is the way to work your way up when you have lost everything,” explained the governor. He requested the boarding school because there is no transportation and students would have to walk from their villages to the school and back each day.
Another reason the governor requested the school and boarding school is because there is much tribal violence. “He said there are six tribes in his state and they don’t get along,” explained Dennis. Living and studying together would hopefully foster more understanding and cooperation among tribes. Dennis noted that everything has to be flown or shipped in for the school. “All food and medical supplies have to come from other countries. There is no electrical system, no potable water, no sewer system, no postal system, and no improved road systems in Bor.” The result of their work is the creation of the Jonglei Christian Vocational Boarding School. According to Dennis, the school teaches vocational skills, contributes to harmony within the community and teaches students that God has a plan for their lives. The school has 10 buildings, along with agricultural plots and recreational area, well, water tower, generator for electricity, rest rooms and showers. The school has a boarding capacity of 56 students, five teachers and a headmaster. In July, 2013 civil war broke out in South Sudan between soldiers of the Dinka and Nuer tribes. This resulted in 618,800 civilians within the state of Jonglei fleeing their homes. It is estimated that more than 100,000 refugees fled to neighboring countries. More than 50,000 people were killed. Bor was taken and re-taken four times. Each time it was burned and looted. When Dennis and Cady were allowed back into the town in Feb., 2014, they found the school’s campus was damaged, but not destroyed. Three aid efforts in May, June, and December of 2014 allowed the school to reopen. The school was also used to provide relief supplies to citizens of the area. School began again on Feb. 2, 2015. Students study Bible and agriculture along with a choice of masonry, electrical, carpentry or computers and each study last five months. The first class graduated 20 students.
