December was a month of celebrating. After attending the NTHBA Christmas Party on December 1st, my wife and I, along with Teri, had the privilege of attending the Christmas Party of the 363rd Training Squadron with Lt. Col. Thorp and his wife Jennifer on December 9th. The squadron welcomed us with open arms and made us feel like part of their family. We were introduced to many of the instructors and supervisors of the TRS. Throughout the evening there were drawings for door prizes along with a D.J. setting the tone with some holiday music. After dinner the group played several fun games that incorporated audience participation. It was amazing to see the comradery and laughter. The 363rd Training Squadron sure knows how to throw a party. We are already getting off to a busy start for 2017. Several NTHBA members, developers, surveyors and engineers, were invited to stakeholder’s meeting/presentation to explain the proposed updates and revisions to “Appendix A – Subdivision and Development Regulations” with the City of Wichita Falls Department of Community Development, Planning Division. It was fortunate for many we received the invitation. After several hours of discussing the pros and cons of the revisions, the NTHBA builders, surveyors and engineers in attendance were able to postpone acceptance of any revisions until further review. The NTHBA has already scheduled a meeting on January 4th at 1 PM with those who were in attendance, in order to compile review questions for the proposed revisions. I have also been informed by Bobby Teague, he will be concentrating on completing the amendments to the adoption of the 2015 Energy Codes. We will keep you updated as we receive new information. Always remember, this is your association, if you receive any information, find yourself in a particular situation or have any ideas or suggestions that the NTHBA might be able to assist in, please feel free to contact the NTHBA office or one of the directors listed in the reporter. We make every effort to keep informed but can always use your help.

Illinois Builder Ed Brady Being Considered as FHA Commissioner

Illinois home builder Ed Brady, who is also the outgoing 2016 NAHB chairman, is among the candidates that the Trump transition team has talked to about becoming the next Federal Housing Administration (FHA) commissioner. “I am extremely humbled to even be considered for the position of FHA commissioner,� said Brady. “As a home builder who has had to deal with FHA-compliance on a daily basis, I would bring a real-world perspective to the job if I was fortunate enough to be offered this important housing policy post.� Brady is president of Brady Homes Illinois, a small single-family home building and development firm. In addition to serving as NAHB chairman, Brady also serves on the board of directors of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago and he is also a member of the Bipartisan Policy Center Housing Commission. He previously served on the Affordable Housing Committee, directing and approving more than $100 million in grants for affordable housing throughout the country. The FHA provides mortgage insurance on loans made by FHA-approved lenders throughout the United States and its territories. FHA insures mortgages on single family and multifamily homes. It is the largest insurer of mortgages in the world, insuring over 34 million properties since its inception in 1934.

AND MORE! We had a great crowd show up for the annual 522 Beverly Drive Christmas Party at the Elks Lodge this year. After a great meal of Ribeye steak, loaded mashed potatoes, green beans, salad and rolls. President Michael Grassi presented the gifts to the Wichita Falls Fire Department representatives Randall Reel and J.J. Awtrey. Randall told guest, the fire department is very appreciative of the overwhelming contributions they receive from the association as well as the community of Wichita Falls. The fire department is able to give to families in the NTHBA Member since 1972 area a Christmas they may not have been able to have if not for the selflessness of the volunteers and residents of the community. After the presentation, members and guest made Helping Build Our Community for a festive evening in their holiday clothing Since 1907 and cheerful demeanor as they participated in the festivities. Each table was asked to choose one person from their table to act as a tree and allow the others to decorate them. There was a bonus table that allowed the designated captain from each table two 30 second chances to grab something extra to decorate with. The extras ranged from baby pins, two sided tape, prettier garland, a bigger or more decorative ornament, better scissors etc. There were around 12 trees. Member FDIC What imaginations. The creativity in the room was extraordinary. The person, or tree as we called them, were wrapped in paper, tinsel and ornaments. Some were wrapped from head to toe while others may have only wrapped their limbs. Decorations were pinned or taped on the tree or even weaved into the garland with the hopes of withstanding any movements. People were wrapping and winding while others were chasing decorations across the floor. There was a 10 minute time limit to trim all the trees. OSHA Finalizes New Walking-Working Surfaces Rule Filed in Construction Industry, Labor, Safety and Health on December 8, 2016 • 0 Comments The U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) has issued a final rule that updates its 44-year- old general industry Walking-Working Surfaces standard, created to better protect workers from slip, trip and fall hazards. According to OSHA, the rule aligns the fall protection requirements for general industry with those for construction that will make compliance easier for those companies who perform both types of activities. It should be noted that this new general industry rule does not change construction standard. One significant change to the general industry rule states that when an employer can demonstrate that using a guardrail, safety net or personal fall protection system on a residential roof is not feasible or creates a greater hazard, it must develop and implement a fall protection plan that meets the requirements 29 CFR 1926.502(k) and training that meets the requirements of 29 CFR 1926.503—the same approach that has been used in the construction industry. Additionally, all inspections, investigations or assessments of a job prior to the actual start of work, or after all the work has been completed, is exempt from the standard. (NAHB urged OSHA to make this change a few years ago.) The rule also allows employers to select the fall protection system that works best for them, choosing from a range of accepted options. Marker Released for Flood Insurance Reauthorization in 2017 Filed in Capitol Hill, Environmental on December 7, 2016 • 1 Comment
Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-Mo.), chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance, on Dec. 6 released a set of principles regarding reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which expires on Sept. 30, 2017. The chairman’s draft is a broad marker that seeks to place the NFIP on more solid fiscal footing, provide stronger public/private partnerships, deliver a more open insurance rate-setting process and update and reform mitigation and mapping standards. NAHB commends Luetkemeyer for requesting greater transparency by requiring the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to hold public meetings and explain its premium rate structures. NAHB also supports Luetkemeyer’s call for a longer reauthorization timeframe to reduce uncertainty in the market. The principles document provides few specifics on actual policies. However, NAHB expects the committee to move quickly in the new year with draft legislation. Reauthorizing the NFIP will be a priority for NAHB in 2017. The association looks forward to working Chairman Luetkemeyer and members of his committee to draft a reauthorization that takes into account the concerns of the housing community, particularly as it relates to the mapping program and the current NFIP mandatory purchase requirements for residential properties with federally backed mortgages. Design a Home Office that Works for You
Home offices are becoming less of a luxury and more of a necessity with more people telecommuting or running their own businesses from their homes. The number of Americans who work from home is in the millions, and with the rising cost of gas and increased traffic causing longer commutes, that number is likely to grow even more every year. Work space is no longer relegated just to the kitchen table or a corner of the guest bedroom; it has been promoted to a room of its own in the home. If you are looking to create a home office or revamp an existing one, keep the following points in mind: Separate Your Space Although you are physically working in the house, it is important to set up your home office so that the lines between your home and work life do not get blurred. You will be less tempted to take a television break in the middle of your work day or work on spreadsheets when you are supposed to be “home from the office.” Design Your Office to Match Your Work Style When choosing the furniture and layout of your office, make sure if fits the way you choose to work. For example, if you believe in “a place for everything and everything in its place,” be sure to allot enough space for adequate storage and file cabinets. If you work on several different projects, set up separate, smaller work stations dedicated to each task. Show Off Your Style There is no such thing as “one design fits all.” One person may prefer the look of dark woods and rich

colors. Another may favor a more whimsical look with bright colors and clean lines. This is your chance to bring in designs and items that best reflect your personality and interests. Don’t be restricted by what you think a home office should look like. Make it your own: You will be the one spending the most time there. Make It Comfortable When choosing furniture and amenities for your office, make sure that you are physically comfortable and that your work space is conducive to productivity. Your chair should be adjustable with adequate seat cushioning. Add a couch or armchair to allow for guest seating or provide a place to read away from your desk. Install recessed lighting which is less harsh, and buy smaller desktop lights focused on task areas that are used for reading and writing to reduce eye strain. Interesting Facts about the Lone Star State . . . . . . . The population of Texas is 26 million, not including the 14 million cattle. 70% of the population of Texas lives within 200 miles of Austin. Texas possesses three of the Top Ten most populous cities in the U.S. - Houston, Dallas and San Antonio. (As of 2010 census) Texas' most populous county and third most populous in the United States is Harris county in southeast Texas with 4.1 million residents.
