Garnel Construction Jose Garcia, owner of Garnel Construction LLC, with

only a sixth-grade education knew that construction was one industry where someone without a higher education could succeed. “For someone who wants to work hard and learn the business, the construction industry offers opportunities for a good living and more.” In the early 1990s, he started Garnel Construction with Arnold Nelson. Habitat for Humanity The old house sits on a bare lot, ready

to be torn down. Yesterday, a family that had spent years here moved up the road to a new house—a simple, decent, affordable house they helped build and now they are buying. The cold night they spent huddled within these crumbling walls and the rainstorms they endured beneath its leaking roof soon will be distant memories. Already, they have begun building a new life. This is one of many Habitat stories that could be told from across our great country. The current housing crisis has only made matters worse for families trying to get out of dangerous, unhealthy housing, struggling every day just to survive. For them Habitat for Humanity’s housing program is a beacon of hope. Habitat for Humanity Wichita Falls is a Christian housing ministry working in partnership with God’s people in need to build decent, affordable housing and revitalize neighborhoods. There has been built 100 homes in Wichita Falls by Habitat Wichita Falls and local volunteers, since Habitat started in 1992. Habitat operates at the grass roots level, with affiliates in all 50 U.S. states and a presence in more than 90 countries. Local residents in each community direct the affiliates and are responsible for family selection, fund raising, house construction and all day-to-day operations. Habitat is builds houses alongside families who demonstrate need and willingness to partner with Habitat. Families invest 300 hours of “sweat-equity” labor in the houses. Their monthly mortgage payments at zero percent interest help fund the construction of more houses. Inadequate shelter binds a family into a daily struggle. A Habitat home frees them to enjoy self-reliance, self-respect and dignity. Children benefit, neighborhoods are changed and communities are improved. Modeled on biblical principles, Habitat’s solution to the blight of substandard housing is popular with people from many political, professional, ethnic, religious and economic backgrounds. This is the essence of Habitat—inviting diverse individuals to find common ground through using a hammer and sharing a goal, building relationships as well as houses. Volunteers who contribute their time to give Habitat’s vision a tangible form join with the homeowner families to provide virtually the entire house building labor. Locally individuals, churches, and corporations that support Habitat’s mission provide the tax deductable donations of money, land and materials that make the work possible. Harmon & Holcomb Homes Two lifelong friends, John Harmon and Ed Holcomb, shared a common philosophy: to construct homes that were of the highest quality. So in 2005, they partnered together to form Harmon and Holcomb Homes. They are able to accomplish their mission by attending educational courses on the most innovative building techniques, materials, and construction designs. Harmon and Holcomb’s construction standards meet and exceed the national, state, and local standards. Harmon’s credentials include an ICC Residential Building Inspector, a Master Certified Green Professional, and a Graduate Master Builder. Holcomb is trained in LEED and Energy Star Version 3 Standards and is currently licensed by the State of Texas for electrical, HVAC, plumbing, medical gas, and propane. Harmon and Holcomb enjoy incorporating cutting edge technology into homes, such as home theatres, security systems, tankless water heaters, energy-efficient fireplaces, and foam insulation. John and Ed work closely with their customers from the beginning through the end, making the building process as stress-free as possible. Both spouses are also active in the business. Denise Holcomb utilizes her extensive background in decorating and design. She enjoys working with their customers in the color design process, selection of appliances and fixtures, and final finishes. Shannon Harmon serves behind the scenes as the company’s accountant, files manager, and account analyst. Harmon said, “We build twelve to fifteen custom homes a year. That way we can give our personal attention to each one. It is normal for us to inspect our jobs 1-3 times a day.” When asked what they like best about building homes, Holcomb replied, “The joy of helping our customers, from design to completion, in building their dream homes!” Once a home is finished, John and Ed tell their customers, “If you have a problem, call us first.
