Dive into the depths of emotion with The Unquiet Heart presented by the NSO on Jan. 10, 2026, at 8pm at the D.F. Cook Recital Hall, MUN, conducted by Simon Rivard and presented by Quidi Vidi Brewery.
This intimate, thought-provoking program begins with Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 45 in F-sharp minor, “Abschieds-Symphonie; Farewell Symphony”—a poignant work that bids farewell with each movement as musicians leave the stage, symbolizing the departing court musicians. Tension simmers and pathos soars in this dramatic Classical gem.
The heart’s turbulence continues with a new work by composer Mao Zhu, featuring special guest Jing Xia on guzheng, blending Eastern tradition with contemporary textures in a poignant, modern voice.
Finally, Dmitri Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony, Op. 73a delivers raw emotion and aching intensity, reimagining his powerful Tenth String Quartet for string orchestra.
