New Cloverley Elementary welcomes first students BRENT RICHTER

In the days leading up to first bell at the new Cloverley Elementary, there was a different kind of back-to-school jitters. Last week the building was buzzing with contractors putting on the final touches and teachers unpacking boxes of books and supplies. And yesterday morning, it became the first new elementary school to open in North Vancouver in more than 35 years. The North Vancouver School District opted to rebuild a new facility in Cloverley Park to alleviate overcrowding at Brooksbank, Queen Mary, Queensbury and Ridgeway Elementary, which has been operating at about double its intended capacity. The district broke ground on the $64-million building – with 24 classrooms, a gymnasium, before- and afterschool care, and North Shore Neighbourhood House child care – in December 2024. Kids who went to the last new elementary school built in North Vancouver would be old enough to have children of their own attending the new Cloverley. A lot has changed in the design of a new school since then. Gone are the days of cinder block walls and chalkboards. Inside, there is a much greater emphasis on natural light, interior glass and exposed mass timber supports and ceilings. Smaller classrooms are adjoined by central, open-concept pods that help classes collaborate and share. Cloverley principal Tim MacLeod beamed as he walked down the gleaming hallways during a last-minute tour on Friday. Continued on A24
