Child population stagnates in two North Shore municipalities

The number of school-aged children in the North Shore’s two district municipalities has barely budged in the last 23 years, according to data from BC Stats.
Between 2001 and 2024, the District of North Vancouver’s total population grew by 16 per cent but there were actually 694 fewer residents aged five to 18 in the municipality last year – a decline of four per cent. While West Vancouver’s total population was up 14 per cent in the last 23 years, there were only 259 more children in 2024 – a more or less flat growth rate for young people. The City of North Vancouver, by contrast, had 1,531, or 16 per cent, more kiddos in 2024 than it did in 2001, while the municipality as a whole grew by 46 per cent. Metro Vancouver, as a region, saw an overall growth rate for school-aged children of 15 per cent over the same period of time. “This is a big part of our future in our region and in our particular communities,” said Andy Yan, director of SFU’s City Program. “It’s so interesting just seeing how different the City of North Vancouver was compared to both districts.” The uneven growth speaks to changing demographics, Continued on A24
