North Shore Emergency Management is preparing for evacuation. How prepared are you?

The tri-municipal disaster agency has launched a major update to the North Shore’s evacuation planning. The last time NSEM updated the plan was in 2012. A lot has changed since then, said NSEM director Emily Dicken, with growing population density, shifting demographics and increasingly dire flooding and droughts. “This was long overdue,” she said. “We knew that it was time to update this plan.” The term “evacuation” may call to mind imagery of everyone in North Vancouver and West Vancouver trying to hurriedly escape the North Shore via its two bridges, but the far more likely scenario, Dicken said, is just residents of an individual neighbourhood having to be moved out of harm’s way. “The nature of the hazards that we face on the North Shore are really geographic-specific,” she said. “Whether it’s flooding or fire, there are many other areas that are unimpacted, and we know that it’s best if people stay as close to home as possible when they’re displaced.” The new plan breaks the entire North Shore down into seven zones and 45 sub-zones, which residents can see on an interactive map NSEM has launched on its new Continued on A21
