SENIORS EXPO CO-PRESENTER BIO: LINDSEY SHEPHERD Lindsey Shepherd is the Coordinator of Hidden Housing Solutions at The Hollyburn Society, where she is leading the design and delivery of a supported home-sharing pilot for adults 55+ on Vancouver’s
North Shore. Originally from the UK, she has worked across the UK and Australia, bringing an international perspective to community services and experience in developing new pilot programs.
Q&A WITH: CHANTAL DUARTE AND LINDSEY SHEPHERD Without giving too much away, what is one intriguing insight you’ll be touching on in your presentation?
We will explain the terms surrounding affordable housing so that people will understand what each term means and which types of housing they should apply for. We understand that it’s frustrating to apply for rental units only to be told that you don’t qualify. We’d like to share the details to make your application process simpler and hopefully, more successful!
Can you share a preview of a key challenge your presentation will address? We will address the growing number of older people who want to stay in their home as they age but are finding it increasingly difficult to manage on their own. Rising living costs, home maintenance, safety concerns or reduced access to driving can all make remaining in the home or neighbourhood they love more difficult. Our Continued on page B4

presentation will help explore how to safely share your home with another older person, to share costs, earn extra income and feel more connected, with support from the Hollyburn Society.
What’s a common myth or misunderstanding about your topic that you plan to set straight? That home sharing is the same as renting out your room and that homeowners need to navigate finding housemates alone, rigid rental rules and formal legal processes. In fact, supported home sharing is a different model: it uses careful screening, compatibility matching, clear
agreements and ongoing checkins to ensure seniors stay in control.
How could your presentation help someone feel more confident or connected in their daily life? We hope that people will leave our presentation with more knowledge about how to be prepared for finding rental units and what will be required of them to be accepted into the current rental market. We also hope that they will have more information about the options that are available and that there are different ways to find connection and support within the community.

PRESENTER BIO: CORINNE STEWART Corinne Stewart (RN BScN Clinical Coordinator, Vancouver Coastal Health, Home & Community Care) is a Clinical Coordinator for the Case Management Team on the North Shore. Prior to this she worked as a frontline case manager for
over 30 years for VCH. Corinne has supported clients and their families to navigate resources and services to support them through their final years. Corinne now supports VCH’s frontline case management team in their work.
Q&A WITH: CORINNE STEWART Without giving too much away, what is one intriguing insight you’ll be touching on in your presentation? The willingness to accept some help whether it’s from family, friends or community supports most often enables people to remain at home longer. Can you share a preview of a key challenge your presentation will address? 1. Navigating both the public and private resources and supports. 2. Knowing when to apply for services
What’s a common myth or misunderstanding about your topic that you plan to set straight? One myth is that people are not eligible for VCH services if they make too much money and a second myth is that the services are all free (some are free and some have a fee). How could your presentation help someone feel more confident or connected in their daily life? Many services and resources are available on the North Shore. After this session you will have a better understanding of who to call and when. Continued on page B11

SENIORS EXPO • SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2026, 12pm – 4pm SPONSORED CONTENT
The Home Care Checklist for Families of Ageing Loved Ones Recognizing the signs of social isolation As people age, changes in mobility, driving ability, health or social circles can make it more difficult to stay connected. Over time, these challenges may lead to loneliness and reduced participation in everyday activities. Consider asking yourself: • Are they regularly seeing friends and family? • Are they still participating in activities they enjoy? • Do they have opportunities to get out and engage with their community? • Have they become less socially active than they used to be? Social connection plays an important role in emotional well-being and quality of life. Companionship and transportation support can help older adults maintain relationships, continue familiar routines
and participate in the activities that bring meaning to their lives. Small changes in daily support can make a meaningful difference in helping someone stay connected to their community. MEMORY & COGNITION Understanding the difference between normal forgetfulness and concerning changes Occasionally forgetting a name or misplacing an item can be a normal part of aging. However, persistent or worsening changes in memory, judgement or thinking may warrant further attention. Some signs to look out for include: • Asking the same questions repeatedly • Frequently missing appointments or important commitments • Difficulty managing bills or finances • Forgetting to take medication or making medication errors • Becoming confused or lost in familiar places
“I’m worried about my mom”
• Forgetting to turn off appliances or complete familiar household tasks Why these changes matter Changes in memory and cognition can have several causes, and they do not automatically indicate dementia. However, when these changes begin to affect everyday life, it is important to discuss them with a healthcare professional. Consistent routines, a familiar environment and appropriate support with daily
activities can help older adults maintain safety and independence for as long as possible. Recognizing changes early allows families to seek guidance, understand their loved one’s needs and explore appropriate ways to support their well-being. At Shylo, we believe independence is about more than doing everything on your own. It’s also about having the support to continue living a fulfilling, connected life. It is our honour and privilege to be trusted to care for you and your loved ones. With Shylo it’s Your Home—Your Health—Your Choice TM

straight? A common misconception is that healthy aging means becoming increasingly independent. In reality, connection and interdependence are fundamental human needs. Asking for support, receiving care, and allowing ourselves to rely on others can be important parts of living a meaningful life.
Can you share a preview of a key challenge your presentation will address? One challenge is navigating the losses and changes that can come with aging while continuing to find purpose and connection. We’ll explore how relationships and our sense of identity can evolve, and how we can adapt without losing what matters most to us.
How could your presentation help someone feel more confident or connected in their daily life? Our hope is that participants leave with a deeper understanding of what connection and purpose mean to them personally, along with small, practical ways to nurture meaningful relationships.
