HEROIC ACT

Firefighter honoured for saving lives in Silverlynn blaze NICK LABA

nlaba@nsnews.com

As an inferno ate through the integrity of the building and dark smoke clogged the air, Matt Saely and other firefighters assigned to the backside of the burning Silverlynn Apartments were called back to safety.

The crew was using scaffolding that was against the building to rescue senior residents trapped on their balconies while the blaze ripped through the interior. But the smoke was becoming too heavy, and the front side of the structure had begun to collapse. Saely started to make his way down the scaffold when he heard the sound of people coughing. “There was a decision I had to make: Try to save those people, or go back down,” he said. Ultimately, Saely’s choice to turn back and save the two seniors still stuck on their balcony would completely change the outcome of the firefighting effort that day – from a potential tragedy to one where no lives were lost. At a ceremony last week, Saely was awarded the Commendation of Valour – one of the profession’s highest honours – for his extraordinary act of heroism in the Silverlynn Apartments fire in North Vancouver on May 10, 2025. The story of the rescue is heroic and harrowing. Wading through the opaque air, Saely followed the coughing sounds to the extreme end of the scaffolding, closest to the unoccupied half of the building that had been gutted for renovations, making it even more susceptible to fire.
