More than half of the Silverlynn Apartments building was reduced to rubble and 39 residents were displaced after a raging fire tore through the Lynn Valley seniors residence on Saturday.
District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services first received reports of a fire at 1335 27th St. just after 9 a.m. Saturday morning, as thick smoke could be seen rising over the site from across Greater Vancouver. More than 60 crew members from across all three North Shore fire departments arrived to battle the blaze, which stemmed from part of the building that had been under renovation and was unoccupied. Fire spread rapidly through that section because it was all framing and no drywall, said DNVFRS Fire Chief Mike Danks. While that part was unoccupied, more than 10 residents had to be evacuated off their balconies in the adjacent occupied section of the building. All residents were accounted for, Danks said, adding that two were sent to hospital in stable condition but soon released, and another three people were treated by paramedics on site, likely for smoke inhalation. Sara Lawson, who lives a block away from Silverlynn, first noticed the fire while she was returning from her daughter’s softball game at around 9:30 a.m. “I had a mild panic attack thinking it was my house,” Continued on A24
