FortisBC is proposing to build a temporary work camp for more than 100 pipeline construction crew members at the Wigwam Inn at the very north end of Indian Arm.
The proposal is proving controversial among Indian Arm’s residents, recreationists and environmentalists. If approved, approximately 125 workers will rotate in and out of three temporary dormitory trailers for 12 to 18 months on a cleared plot of land, known as the “soccer field,” just north of the inn. The Eagle Mountain Woodfibre Gas Pipeline, which will run 50 kilometres between FortisBC’s infrastructure in the north end of Coquitlam to the new Woodfibre LNG export plant on Howe Sound, received approvals from the province and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) in 2016. The pipeline itself has been under construction since 2023 and is now about 50 per cent complete. Since 2025, about 300 workers have been transported to FortisBC’s worksite in the Indian River Valley via water taxis leaving the Lynnwood Marina every day. That trip takes at least an hour and a half each way, and the number of workers is expected to climb sharply in 2026 as contractors work to finish the project. Continued on A23
