Woman with rare cancer fighting for access to treatment

For 25 years, emergency dispatcher Kim Goulding of North Vancouver was the calm voice on the other end of the line during someone’s worst day.

As a police dispatcher, she guided people through crises they never saw coming – children who went missing, overdoses, people who said they would jump from the bridge. She made sure help got to them when they needed it. But for the past several years, Goulding has been waiting for someone to dispatch help to her. And so far it isn’t coming. Since 2019, Goulding, 55, has been living with adrenal cancer. The disease is so rare, it strikes only one in a million people each year. B.C. sees fewer than 10 people diagnosed, annually. There is no cure for adrenal cancer. But with the right combination of treatments, some people can defy the odds and live for years. Up until now, Goulding has done just that. But she knows the options are shrinking. Goulding was shocked to learn that one of the drug treatment options commonly available to patients in the U.S. and other countries isn’t available to her in British Columbia.
