Nurses’ Memorial Chapel reopens p It was built to honour ten New Zealand nurses whose deaths in the first world war “should never have happened.” It was threatened with demolition by district health boards in the 1970s and again in the 1980s. Then in February 2011, it was nearly destroyed by the earthquake. That earthquake could have been the death-knell for Christchurch Nurses’ Memorial Chapel. However, last week, after years of restoration, the world’s only chapel commemorating nurses killed in during the world wars, was officially reopened by the Governor-General the Right Honourable Dame Patsy Reddy, accompanied by Canon David Morrell (right) immediate past-president of the chapel trust.
