Leeston in playoff for national title shot

Unbeaten Leeston-Southbridge and defending champions Sefton will meet in a one-off showdown …

It is hoped the Selwyn Motor Fest and Family Fun Day, which raised funds for Selwyn Central St John, will become an annual event. Local district councillor Craig Watson, a member of the Motor Fest organising committee, said the district needs more high profiles. “The district already has some great draw cards like the Hororata Highland Games and Selwyn Sounds which help to raise the profile of the district, but we need more.” He said overall the feedback on the inaugural event had been positive.

“There were far more people there than we expected, which was cool, but it did throw up some challenges for us to deal with. “There were a lot of volunteers who came in on the day and helped to get us over the line and we really appreciate that. I think the event really did raise the profile of the district and for the local St John ambulance service, as a lot of people think it is fully funded but it isn’t. “We haven’t done a final tally of the money raised but I think it will be significant, maybe in the tens of

thousands. A lot of people gave more than the ticket price as the money was going to St John.” Cr Watson said it was hard to get an accurate estimate on the crowd. “There were well over 850 cars, trucks and motorcycles on display and as we didn’t issue tickets for everyone as people paid on the day it is hard to put a number of people who came in but I would say it would be in the vicinity of 5,000 to 6,000.” He said all the food vendors were really happy with the way the day went and some even sold out of food. 
