Most recently, Hannah King won the Senior Dairy Calf Championship at the Boys and Girls Agricultural Club Championships held last week. This came on top of first prizes at the Canterbury A and P Show as well as success at the Ellesmere A and P Show. Speaking of the growing collection of prize ribbons won with her calf, Missy, Hannah said it was all made sweeter by knowing she was keeping up the family name. “I was quite happy because my Mum (Adele King) and my brother Samuel

have both won. I also felt really happy for Missy as well.” At the Canterbury show outing, the budding stock handler, with Missy, got a first for Best Turned Out and Handled and champion for Turned Out and Handled. The pair took out the hat trick by finishing the day by winning the Pet Calf Supreme Champion. On her final day of showing, Hannah was awarded a first place in the Young Handlers class and a second in the Junior Stock Judging.

From a 10-year-old’s perspective it was a challenge: “There were a lot of large calves and Missy is quite small. Also they tended to have more black on them. Missy is a Friesian, but she hasn’t got as much black on her. The leading took over half an hour. Then we had to stop and stand up our calf, then walk forward and stop and then the judge asked us heaps of questions.” Now there are holidays and Christmas to look forward to and preparation of course for more show accolades next year. 
