Mr Coe, a Leeston farmer, was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to local government, and was one of two Selwyn residents to make the list. He had served three terms as mayor of the Selwyn District Council, until his retirement at last year’s local body elections. He had previously been a councillor for the Ellesmere Ward from 1991 to 2007 and deputy mayor from 2004 to 2007. “It is always nice to have your efforts recognised but it has been a real privilege to have had the opportunity to serve as mayor of Selwyn,” Mr Coe said. “I have to thank my wife Gem and the family for their contribution and support over the years as it wouldn’t have been possible without them. “I would also like to acknowledge the work of council staff and councillors, both past and present, for their work, and also all the wonderful people of Selwyn who really are the ones who help shape the district.” Mr Coe led the Selwyn district through the aftermath of the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes and has held a range of leadership positions within various community organisations throughout the district. He has been involved with Federated Farmers for more than 40 years, including time as Provincial President of the North Canterbury branch from 1991 to 1994.
