p Coven Mouat and the Lincoln High School kapa haka group welcomed Rolleston College founding students and staff to the Rolleston school’s opening ceremony

Education Minister Hekia Parata was on hand to do the honours at the opening of Rolleston College Horoeka Haemata. She was joined at the event by 214 Year 9 founding students, 32 staff and hundreds of invited guests and parents including Selwyn MP Amy Adams and Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton. Rolleston College principal Steve Saville told the crowd which had gathered for the opening that everyone involved in the new school build was jointly celebrating with them as they start the next stage of the journey. “We are delighted and excited to be at this point. It is the result of a huge

amount of work from a large number of committed individuals from within the local community and by those working at a national level,” Mr Saville said. “Our fantastic new school will provide for a huge range of learning opportunities with its large theatre and gym, flexible learning spaces that will accommodate technology, the performing and creative arts, as well as the core curriculum areas. It is hoped that these wonderful spaces will become genuine community facilities as we develop and grow. “Another special part of our school is the Waitaha School satellite, catering for students with additional learning needs.”

Establishment Board of Trustees chairperson Jackie Freeman said the official opening was an opportunity to thank everyone who had made a significant contribution to the new school. “A secondary school has been a long time coming to Rolleston and many people have worked tirelessly behind the scenes for this to happen,” Mrs Freeman said. “Their hard work and passion for our children’s education is now a reality with this incredible school.”
