p Michelle Attwood and her husky Sam are looking forward to the move to West Melton.

The dog rescue organisation has leased a 10 acre block with house on the outskirts the Selwyn township to initially home up to 10 rescued Husky dogs. Husky Rescue NZ was the brainchild of Christchurch woman Michelle Attwood who has been running the centre from her small Hei Hei property for over five years. “We have been looking for somewhere larger for the dogs for around a year now and we were fortunate to come across this beautiful property in West Melton,” Michelle said. “Huskies are a fiercely

independent breed of dogs. They are the seventh closest breed to wolves and as such need a huge amount of exercise. “So to find a property of this size is just ideal as it means we can exercise the dogs from our doorstep rather than having to drive all over the place to get them their exercise.” Michelle started Husky Rescue NZ after noticing a growing number of people looking to sell or give away their dogs on places like the TradeMe. “What some people didn’t realise is that these dogs are a lot of work in terms of exercise and also in providing

secure housing for them. “They are very independent and can survive without human contact. Many people expect to have the dog follow them around and come when they are called but Huskies have minds of their own.” Michelle has been personally funding Husky Rescue NZ for the last five years, costing her around $24,000 a year, but the organisation is now in the process of becoming a registered charity which should help with donations and sponsorship. continued on page 4 …
