The Selwyn Central Arts Council, or Arts Heart, is calling for entries into the inaugural Senior High School Student Art Exhibition in October. Council chair Rails Mackey said it is the first time they have run an event specifically aimed at student artists. “We have our annual art exhibition and exhibitions are what we do well but we wanted to have something that would encourage younger artists to exhibit their work,” she said. “We noticed that only occasionally would young artists dare to enter our annual exhibition and if they did it was usually because either their parents or some close relative had pushed them into it.” The exhibition is open to senior students from Years 11 to 13. Mrs Mackey said they have been in contact with the high schools in Selwyn but also want to reach out to those students who go to school in Christchurch and other areas. “It’s open to any senior student living in Selwyn — they don’t have to go to school in the district just live here.” To incentivise the students the exhibition entry fee of $10 will be pooled and will be given to a winner who will be selected by the viewing public. “The winner will be determined through a ‘people’s choice’ selection, not by us at Hearts Art. That means the artist with the most popular piece of work will get all the entry money.” She said they have scheduled the event for early October during the school
