“I know it’s been an extremely tough time for many farmers,” said Ms Ardern. “Losing herds, pets and years of stock genetics built up over decades is an incredible hit to take for New Zealand’s one shot to protect our national herd and economic base. “For those families whose farms have been cleared of Mycoplasma bovis, restocking marks an important turning point — it allows them to begin moving forward again. “The government remains committed to phased eradication, which is progressing well, and to helping farmers get back to business,” she said. The recovery package rolled out by the Ministry for Primary Industries and response partners DairyNZ and Beef+LambNZ, includes a DairyNZ and Beef+LambNZ Compensation Assistance Team who can sit down and work with farmers on their claims. There is also an improved compensation form and guide, along with an online milk production losses calculation tool.
Rural Support Trust has been boosted with a further 80 trained members, and four regional centres will each have a regional recovery manager to help farmers develop a tailor-made recovery plan. Mr O’Connor said the response is making good progress in its world-first eradication attempt. “Today places a spotlight on the resilience of our primary sectors and those who work in them, with the focus on support for farmers who are helping to rebuild the national herd to full strength,” he said. “Working closely with our farming industry partners, the government remains confident eradication is ontrack and we have a good chance of success. I thank all farmers who have helped get us to this point,” said Mr O’Connor. Of New Zealand’s 24,000 farms, 74 have been infected to date with 36 subsequently destocked and cleared of Mycoplasma bovis.

Farmstrong comedy show a roaring success

The Farmstrong comedy show, designed to get Taranaki farmers off their farms and laughing, has been labelled a roaring success. A crowd of 140 people packed the Kapuni War Memorial Hall to see a line-up of popular comedians Paul Ego, Justine Smith, Tevita Manukia and Darren Jardine take centre stage. The event attracted farmers of all ages and supporters of the rural community. “It was great to get off the farm and have a laugh with the neighbours,” said Tariki contract milker, Kenzie Bellringer. “Having it in a rural community hall instead of in town is a lot more appealing to farmers. It was an awesome night. My face hurts from laughing so much. It was a fantastic night,” said Central Taranaki Young Farmers member, Jessie Waite. The show was supported by the Rural Support Trust, alongside Farmstrong and New Zealand Young Farmers. The Farmstrong rural wellness programme encourages farmers to be active, connect with others and embrace new experiences. “We have been making a big effort to raise awareness about the importance of members looking after their mental wellbeing,” said Matthew Herbert, who is chair of the district’s five New Zealand Young Farmers clubs. Paul Ego said what Farmstrong is doing is brilliant. “It’s great to see so many of you here tonight. It’s healthy to have a good

laugh. For us, getting out of Auckland to do these gigs is so much fun, even if it is in the middle of nowhere,” said Justine Smith. Members from Taranaki Young Farmers ran the bar and cooked nachos as a fundraiser at the event. The show was the first of five Farmstrong comedy nights being held from Tangiteroria to Winton during the next two months.

Sights set on

From a young age, Brandon Holdt loved visiting his uncle’s dairy farm, following him around on a pushbike and spending time in the shed. Although Brandon was a townie for most of his life, these visits set the course towards his decision to settle on a dairy farming career.
B
randon began his career as a junior farm assistant on a 220-cow dairy farm at Warea in coastal Taranaki. “I stayed there for a season to get my basic skills and knowledge of the dayto-day basics of running a dairy farm,” he said. A move to a farm assistant position on a 650-cow dairy farm unit in northern Manawatu followed. However, Brandon found the location presented a few problems. The farm was an hour’s drive away from any friends or family, and snowfall throughout winter added to the isolation. “It was starting to make me come to terms if this was the right job for me,” he said. Brandon decided to give it one last try and applied for a few positions closer to
Palmerston North. “In April 2015 I got offered to work in a big organisation, which ran 1,800 cows through an 80bale rotary in Moutoa.” After his first year as a farm assistant on this farm, Brandon was placed in a senior assistant role. He worked on the Moutoa farm, near Foxton, for three years. “It was hard for me to leave — as it was like our own little community and everyone was one big family.” Brandon said there was so much to learn and all types of machinery on the farm. “You would get all herds in morning and night, set up break fences, move irrigator, and bring cows to the feed pads, which held 1,000 cows in four different bays. There was also tractor work which you would be loading up and

mixing the feed, and feeding out on the feed pad or in the paddocks,” he said. “Also doing other jobs when it was in the busy period, like helping with maize and silage or cultivating paddocks. It was a massive operation.” Brandon recently returned to Taranaki after working in the Manawatu for three years. He is now 2IC for James Holgate and Tracy Kivell who contract milk 360 Jersey crossbred cows, on a 137haeffective farm near Midhurst. James is the 2018 Taranaki Dairy Manager of the Year. The Midhurst farm receives an average annual rainfall of close to 2,000mls. Maize is grown, along with silage and hay. Brandon found this winter has been warmer compared to other years with only a handful of frosts. “Every day is a new challenge as you never know what’s going to come round the corner,” said Brandon. “I would say the bigger challenges would be getting to know all the pasture side of things, as this is my first year of working it out on my own. Having the owner and contract milker here, who are both strong in this section, will give me a better understanding and guide me through it all.” Brandon has completed Primary ITO’s level two milk quality course, and the level three livestock husbandry course. He plans to return to Primary ITO studies next season. With a better understanding of pasture management, Brandon plans to work towards achieving Primary ITO

level four. It will enable him to follow a contract milking or farm management role. Entering the Dairy Industry Awards in the future is also on Brandon’s list, along with looking at herd ownership. “I enjoy getting up knowing that I am out in the fresh air doing what I love,” said Brandon. “Making sure that the girls are happy and the job is getting done to the best I can make it.” Prior to leaving Taranaki to work in the Manawatu, Brandon was a member of Coastal Young Farmers.

“I really enjoyed meeting new people, helping out the community and activities that were done with Young Farmers. Since returning to Taranaki, Brandon has rejoined the organisation through the Central Taranaki branch and caught up with a couple of former schoolmates. Brandon said the farming lifestyle suits him and he has no desire to return to a town job. “I wouldn’t change it for a thing,” he
said. I love bringing my son out on the farm and getting him into it all. He will be a farmer one day, I reckon. “It’s good for the younger age kids to see what goes on. To everyone farming, take every day as it comes — nothing is too easy or too hard. Always ask for help when needed,” said Brandon. “New Zealand’s farming sector is like a big farm. You are never alone. When times get hard, seek help.”

Taranaki dairy farmer Lance Mullin has a long-standing interest in vintage machinery. Following the restoration of his grandfather’s vintage Allis Chalmers D270 tractor, Lance joined the Taranaki Vintage Machinery Club and is now vice president.
“I
’ve always been interested in old stuff,” said Lance. “If it was old, rusty, greasy and mechanical, I was interested.” The Allis Chalmers D270 was purchased by Lance’s grandfather, Arthur Mullin, in 1956. Lance said it was the first tractor that his father drove, and has been in the family since new. Restored during 2010–2011, this tractor is a treasured part of Lance’s collection due to the family history associated with it. Another favourite is a 1956 Ferguson FE35, built before this model was officially launched. Lance finished
restoring this tractor a couple of years ago. Lance grew up on his family’s farm at Te Kiri near Opunake and has lived in the area most of his life. He and his wife Claire attended the local primary school together. Last year the couple bought the family farm off Lance’s parents and have just started their second season as farm owners, milking 270 cows on 86ha-effective. They also have a small cottage museum on the property. Although a number of Lance’s vintage machinery pieces initially came from around Taranaki, he has also travelled to Auckland, Hawke’s Bay and Martinborough to pick up items.

Some of these were found on Trade Me and at clearing sales. Others were sourced privately. “Sometimes people want their old gear to go to a good home and give them to you,” he said. Lance currently has 12 vintage tractors in various conditions. “Some restored, some waiting restoration, some still in their working clothes,” said Lance. “I also own roughly 30 vintage Ferguson/Massey Ferguson farm implements.” Lance’s collection has grown to include vintage Mountain Goat farm bikes, a 1956 Series l Land Rover and a Bedford SLCG truck. “I own two Ferguson TEA 20 tractors fitted with half-tracks,” said Lance.
These rare tractors are the same models that Sir Edmund Hillary took to the South Pole. “His were modified, so the tracks also went over the front wheels. “I have one I enjoy using on the farm that is still in its working clothes, and one I am currently restoring.” Lance joined the Taranaki Vintage Machinery Club 10 years ago; has been secretary for the past four years and vice president for a couple of years as well. The club, which is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary, has a membership of close to 90. Along with monthly meetings in Stratford, the club holds a variety of events during the year. One large annual event alternates between a Vintage Working Weekend in
South Taranaki and a Vintage Hay Day weekend in North Taranaki. Members often head to farm clearing sales together. These are usually held during April and May each year and extremely popular with club members. “It’s always a good place to catch up for a yak, even if there’s nothing worth buying.” Lance appreciates and enjoys many aspects of collecting vintage machinery. “Finding and buying something which is old, rare or unique is really fun,” he said. “I love getting my hands dirty, pulling stuff apart, fixing and restoring it, and bringing it back to life. “The club is a lot of fun, and there is some great friendship and comradely amongst members.”

Raymond and Janet Harre met whilst she was on a horse trek in Whangamomona and now are the successful owners of Mangaohae Station enjoying the ‘lambs of their labour’.

aymond grew up in Whangamomona and became a shearer, leasing his first property at 18 years of age. Janet grew up on a dairy farm and became a registered nurse. “We purchased the family farm in 2004, and bought our first Suffolk at the Stratford sales and acquired 300 ewes from two long-standing registered studs. We culled hard, keeping only high performing ewes and lambs and are seeing good results.” “We have managed to breed animals that can handle hill country pressure and produce fast growing lambs that are sent to the works at weaning. We buy the best breeding rams, and if they don’t meet our expectations, we cull them regardless of the cost.”
Raymond and Janet culled a ram costing $6,700 because they were not happy with his feet. “We want to breed good traits — because using animals with poor traits costs you in the long run,” said Raymond. “In 2012, the opportunity came to purchase Mangaohae station west of Piopio. Our neighbour purchased our Whangamomona farm, and the community welcomed us here. This was wonderful, as our reservation was losing the amazing community support that exists in Whangamomona.” Mangaohae is approximately 1,000ha with 800ha-effective. They winter 8,800 stock units including 3,350 Romdale ewes, 400 stud Suffolk, Suftex and Texel, 1,000 ewe hoggets and 150 ram hoggets along with 190 South Devon

Mangaohae Station is home to 8,800 stock units cross breeding cows, 130 18-month heifers and steers and 440 yearling steers and heifers. “Our Romdale ewes have scanned in lamb at 190 per cent for the past three years with stud ewes scanning at 175 per cent — our hoggets scan at 90–100 per cent,” says Janet. “Our first three summers were very dry and financially hard. We paid $200 for ewes with our first lambs only averaging $60 due to the dry. We kept costs to a minimum, and Raymond’s father Wayne helps at busy times like shearing and docking, and we recently employed a school leaver, Lochie Griffin to lighten the load and allow us time off. “We have increased our stud ewe numbers and included Suftex and Texels. Suftex are half Suffolk and half Texel — our most sought-after ram.” It produces a high yielding carcass, extra hindquarter meat with early
maturing high growth rates and larger frame. “This year we will have our first Charollais-Suffolk cross and hope their growth rates match, or better, the Suftex lamb. “Our stud ewes run separately from the commercial at lambing and mating. We believe running in large mobs with the commercial ewes, and selective breeding has contributed to increasing hardiness and intend to breed a terminal sire that’s lambs will grow well on hill country. “Our best Suftex rams are used over 1,200 Romdales, with lambing starting on September 6. We wean and ‘first fat pick’ around December 20 for singles and January 3 for twins. “Recent years with good spring grass growth 75 per cent of our Suftex/ Romdale docked lambs went to the works at weaning averaging around 17–

We are seeing great results of using good growth rate terminal and Romdale sires.” Mangaohae is in the Waitomo limestone area with rocky limestone outcrops and Mairoa ash soil, which can dry out quickly in summer. “The area is very wet in the winter and spring, with an average rainfall of 3,200mls yearly. The station was low fertility at purchase with P levels of six on the hill and up to 15 on some flats, with a low pH of 5.1–5.4. We invested in capital fertiliser with 400kgs of super and 2.5 tonnes of lime per ha. Fertility has increased with regular fertiliser and lime applications, and we are making good progress,” Janet says. Ewe lambing is spread across the station to reduce losses due to spring storms. “The rocks provide shelter for lambing and spring calving starts on September
10, with the two-year-old heifers on the flats. Mixed age cows calve in mid-October, with the ewes in the easier paddocks. We rear 60–80 beef calves, buy in 200–300 weaners and sell 15-month-old steers in December– January at 450–500kgs live weight. “We farm as a family with our daughters, 12-year-old Leah and 10-year-old Tessa. Leah has her own heading dog, and is good at stock work and is interested in breeding Speckle Park cattle. “We brought some crossbred heifers and a pure breed bull and plan on embryo transplanting some to give her some pure breeds. Both girls are keen horse riders and have spent countless hours in the woolshed. “We want to leave a farm better than when we started, and believe if you look after your stock and the environment they will look after you.”

Kickstart to healing Some people who contact me have straightforward problems. I was speaking with someone recently who has moderate osteoarthritis (OA) in her knees. We put her on a programme that included some dietary recommendation, some helpful tips and two supplements. I have no doubt that within three months she will be more comfortable. Guidelines for farm safety Farm accidents are not inevitable, but they are unfortunately part of rural statistics whatever the best of intentions, so good advice is paramount. WorkSafe NZ says while there is no single product or document that is a blueprint, farmers should only employ competent and qualified professional health and safety advisers, with particular emphasis where staff employment is a factor. “When selecting a new contractor or buying stock, farmers do their homework,” says a WorkSafe adviser. “They shop around, look online, ask other farmers and make a decision based on sound information. The same should apply to buying health and safety advice and resources. “Farmers should make sure that they are not simply going to get a folder or piles of forms someone else has done for them. That won’t make their farm any
safer. What they actually need is a way of building a health and safety culture into farm activities and constructing a really effective culture of involving everyone.” There is no substitute for the unique knowledge the farmer, family and workers have of the land, its terrain, its facilities and day-to-day operation. “What’s most important is everyone on farm thinking about the risks and managing them, so everyone stays healthy and safe. When everyone is involved, there is a positive impact on other parts of the business.” While there are good health and safety consultants out there, they are not all of the same quality and effectiveness. “Farmers need to make sure they are working with a competent and qualified

professional safety adviser — that may not be the first health and safety adviser they get talking to at the local field day.” To help farmers buy the right kind of support, the Health and Safety Association of New Zealand (HASANZ), the national umbrella organisation representing all workplace health and safety professions, has developed a simple checklist. Ask them these five quick questions before making a decision: which professional association do you belong to – can you confirm this, what qualifications and/or certification do you
have, what relevant skills and experience do you have for this job, can you give me examples of similar work you have done recently, and are you happy for us to contact your clients about your work for them? Contractors need to know what a farmer’s health and safety procedures are — so they can assess their employees’ safety on-site. “Farm owners and managers must work with contractors to make sure they share a common understanding of the hazards that exist, and mitigation that is in place.”

It is good to ask yourself if your fencer has a successful track record, provides high-quality work with the best materials — will they stand behind their workmanship, and how long has this company been in business? Common sense questions at the outset will have a bearing on the job being successful. These are all valid and important questions not just for the wider farming operation, but also closer to home. Increasingly, farming residences are graced with a swimming pool, and strict health and safety codes apply. Do not always rely on advertising, but ask around the community — firstly

because these are people with first-hand experience. A fencing contractor that has a lot of word-of-mouth advertising is 110 per cent better than one with a $1,200 ad in the Yellow Pages. You want to find out how long a company or contractor has been around, if there is a history of complaints and if they are active in the community. It can help you form a more accurate picture of the contractor’s business dealings and how the company has handled complaint resolution. When you find a contractor that you are comfortable with, ask to see their portfolio. Portfolios are a source of pride
to reputable businesses, the contractor should be more than willing to show you his examples of work along with giving you the addresses of a few places with jobs similar to yours. If the contractor is not forthcoming, look harder. Almost all reputable businesses have a web presence now. Get the contractor’s web address if they have one so you can review the site. Often times, they have placed additional tools on the site along with their portfolios and references. The Fencing Contractors Association is also a good place to source local contractors.

Post-winter cultivation is critical The future of farming could be at risk if the quality and extent of our soils are not maintained. “Sediment and nutrients from farming operations, along with pathogenic microbes, are some of the most important causes of reduced water quality during the post-winter period, when farmers are cultivating their paddocks,” says sustainable agriculture adviser, Bala Tikkisetty. “Topsoil erosion, especially in hill country, of bare or cultivated land, leads to the loss of valuable nutrients, and disrupts infrastructure and increases the costs of maintenance such as cleaning culverts and drains. “Landowners and cultivation contractors can help mitigate the environmental risks associated with cultivation and protect their soil resources. The greatest risk can be when the protective plant cover is lost through the cultivation of soils for pasture renewal and crop establishment.” Soils should be cultivated when the moisture content is neither too high nor too low. “To assess if soils are suitable for primary cultivation, take a piece of soil, half the volume of an index finger, and press firmly to form a pencil. “Roll the soil into a ‘worm’ on the palm of one hand with the fingers of the other to about 50mm long and 4mm thick. “Exert sufficient pressure with your fingers to reduce the diameter of the worm to 4mm in 15–20 complete forward and back movements of the fingers. Conditions are suitable for cultivation if the soil cracks before the worm is made. Soil is too wet if you can make the worm.” Contour cultivation, sowing at right angles to the prevailing wind, reducing

run-off is recommended for minimising soil loss. Sediment and nutrients are carried to streams in the overland flow of water. Establish filter strips where water enters water bodies — healthy riparian vegetation improves bank stability, increases water quality, reduces stock losses, filters surface run-off and provides wildlife habitat. “Good riparian vegetation slows runoff down so that sediment, phosphorus and faecal matter settle out before reaching waterways.” Up to 90 per cent of sediment can be caught and trapped faecal bacteria in grass strips will die off — grasses should be 15cm high minimum with a high density of stems and leaves at ground level for maximum trapping. “The spread of pests, particularly weeds and pathogens, by vehicles, cultivation machinery and equipment has significant consequences so machinery hygiene must be practised any time a machine is moved between properties.”

“Finding the right opportunities, doing the prep work and being vigorous during the tendering process will increase your chances of winning contracts,” the ministry advises. Tendering is the process involved in responding to an Rfx, a catch-all term meaning ‘Request for information’, a quote, a proposal or tender. “An RFx can come in many shapes and forms. If it’s for a small amount of work, it will be fairly straightforward. However, applying for larger or long-term contracts will require a significant amount of time, thinking and resources to complete.

You can use that information to help you learn what to do, and what not to do, the next time you apply. “You will need to think about the dayto-day and long-term effects on your business. Before applying, ask yourself — do I have the people and resources to fulfil the obligations of the contract, or will I have to hire new employees or buy new equipment. “There are myriad considerations, and each approach may require a different viewpoint. In essence, a good contract will be the result of good homework and planning.”

You will need to be strategic when you decide which tenders to respond to. “Going for every RFx you come across is a waste of time and energy. Your probability of success will increase if you only respond to ones in the area of your existing services and expertise.” Even if the contract is relevant to your business, you should first consider how much preparation will need to go into the application process, and whether your business is able to sustain that effort — especially as winning the contract isn’t guaranteed. “Losing a tender can be disappointing, but it can be an important business opportunity. It has been more than a year since Mycoplasma bovis was first detected in New Zealand and DairyNZ continues to be actively involved in the situation across many areas of the response.

The risk of spreading M bovis bacteria between farms on machinery is low, however it is good biosecurity practice to have a ‘clean on, clean off’ policy for both machinery and people, which will protect your farm business from weeds, pests, and diseases. Insist all machinery coming onto your property is thoroughly clean, and expect it to be cleaned before it leaves your property. Disinfectant should be used ‘after’ cleaning vehicles, equipment and boots/gear that have been in contact with stock or effluent — disinfectant does not work through dirt. Remember the rule for machinery, vehicles and equipment, whether your own, visitors or contractors — separate, clean and disinfect. Ask if it needs to come on-farm — ‘if not, keep it off’ and limit visitors to your property. Do not allow any used equipment onto your farm that has not been cleaned and then disinfected — this includes boots, overalls and protective clothing. Provide a rubbish bin for dirty gloves, disposable overalls and other rubbish and have a place, with a scrubbing brush for visitors to wash their equipment, with a separate area and soap to wash hands. Keep stock trucks away from animal areas and have loading facilities

close to the tanker track. Check with the trucking company that their vehicles are cleaned and disinfected after each client’s stock is moved. The tanker track must be kept clean with a ‘no go’ zone for stock to this area. Disinfect to destroy or inactivate the ‘bugs’ — apply the disinfectant and leave it to soak, so it works. Change disinfectant regularly — any common agricultural disinfectants are effective against Mycoplasma bovis bacteria. Use the product according to the label directions or alternatively, you can use 0.2 per cent Citric acid — one teaspoon in one-litre of water.

The Rural Support Trust was set up to help members of rural communities at difficult times in life, no matter who they are and what the circumstances. The support workers at the trust understand that living and working rurally can be a challenge and sometimes the pressure is too much. Often it is the women who see the effects of stress setting in, sometimes with no support close by, or not wanting to burden others with their problems. If you are concerned for yourself, a family member or friend call 0800 787 254 for a free, confidential chat. “This year, we established Female Farmer Resilience Workshops after a lady called the trust line crying, as her husband was unwell. She was working the farm alone and caring for the family — she was exhausted,” says trust coordinator, Marcia Paurini. “I offered relief milkers so they could take time out and recharge but she said this was impossible as they were about to start calving and then AB, so they couldn’t get away until December. This call deeply resonated with me and led to the creation of the resilience workshops. “Resilience means the ability to bounce back. It is hard-wired from our foremothers — raising children, milking, churning butter, baking, washing clothes in tubs, sewing clothes, feeding everyone and carrying on.” Today, due to commitments, our rural women forget two important, resilient tools — reflection and self-care. “Reflection requires us to not expect thanks for a job well done but it is OK to look in the mirror and reflect on how proud you are for accomplishing that

task and pat yourself on the back for everyday achievements. Reflection is a powerful tool as most days blend into one another — the expression ‘mothers put on your own oxygen mask first’ is as important in aeroplane safety as it is on the farm. “Self-care is being mindful of yourself, not in a narcissistic way, but in a way that ensures that you are being cared for. Self-care daily helps to protect the energy that we need in order to survive and thrive. It goes a long way in managing stress and living your best life.” It can include coffee with a neighbour, walking at the beach, standing on the deck with a cup of tea enjoying the sun — taking ‘me-time’ to just be. “We can’t give and give and expect to be okay — we may be but what about

The mystery of PTO pumps Power take-off pumps have been around for nearly as long as tractors. Early ones used belt drive systems to increase the impeller speed from the tractor output of 540rpms. Most pumps function best between 1,600rpm and 3,600rpm depending on design, so these variances often necessitated large differences in pulley size with accompanying problems in getting the power to the pump shaft. Also, the pump turned wrong way necessitating the pump being reversed, so that the suction end was away from the water source! Fortunately, several companies designed purpose-built units with integrated water-cooled gearbox such as the Ferrari F83 pictured. Customising of these Ferrari gearboxes can be done simply — allowing various input/impeller ratios. Ferrari also builds specific PTO pumps for effluent to take the much harsher environment of pumping dirty, abrasive liquids and include a macerator as standard, and a chopper if required. Bigger is not always more beautiful. A large pump always uses more power than a correctly-specified pump. We often see medium pressure pumps being driven beyond their service speed in an attempt to produce the high pressure required. Animal welfare stronger

Regulations to strengthen the nation’s animal welfare system came into effect on Monday, October 1 and farmers need to ensure they are aware of the new regulations, which cover on-farm practices and transporting livestock. “Two-thirds of us have pets, and we love them. Further, New Zealand’s economy relies on our social licence to produce the finest food and fibre — and it can take one case of poor animal welfare to harm this,” said Minister of Agriculture, Damien O’Connor. “These regulations have been developed over the past three years, in consultation with industry and advocacy groups, and target lower-end offending. While most people care for their animals and are already doing it right, the regulations make it easier to take action against animal mistreatment and target specific behaviours that need to change. “Animal Welfare Inspectors from MPI and SPCA can now issue fines for certain actions, such as allowing dogs in cars to get heat stressed, or failing to provide tethered goats with access to water and shelter. Some of the regulations are infringement offences, with a set fine, while others are prosecutable offences, which could result in a larger fine and criminal conviction.” Farmers and lifestyle block owners need to ensure they, and their staff, are up to date with the rules and regulation changes concerning the welfare of animals in their care to avoid prosecution.

Back in 1982, farming was a simpler trade in many ways. Nevertheless, the same challenges were on the mind of rural workers. The trusty two-wheeled farm bike had definitely replaced the horse, but when it came to lugging tools and equipment to far-flung quarters of the farm, something new was needed. Experts join advisory panel

Fonterra has appointed an independent Sustainability Advisory Panel to guide the co-operative as it strives to be a world leader in sustainably produced dairy nutrition. The panel features a diverse range of experts including Sir Rob Fenwick who co-founded the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development and was the first New Zealander knighted for services to both business and conservation. Paul Gilding, a fellow at the University of Cambridge’s Institute for Sustainability Leadership, author and former global head of Greenpeace. Aroha Mead, a research associate specialising in Matauranga Maori and indigenous knowledge. Bridget Coates, chairperson of White Cloud Dairy Innovation, director of Tegel Group Holdings Ltd and former director of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. Hugh Logan, who chaired the Land and Water Forum and has 40 years’ experience in natural resource management and Michelle Pye, owner of large-scale agricultural business Pye Group and member of the Fonterra Shareholders’ Council. CEO, Miles Hurrell, says the panel represents one part of the co-op’s wider strategy to build sustainability into everything it does. “Our independent panel will help ensure our strategy is relevant to current and evolving sustainability trends while being integrated into commercial objectives. “Some of the world’s biggest sustainability challenges are around

food, and we believe, like many, that the global food system must shift from being part of the problem to becoming a greater part of the solution. Our co-op is already taking action to support healthy environments and strong communities, but we know we must do more.” Mr Hurrell says collaboration is key. “Environment minister David Parker and agriculture minister Damien
O’Connor have just announced the New Zealand government’s blueprint to improve freshwater quality which is encouraging to see, and we support their overall objective. “We share their commitment to deliver healthy waterways for New Zealanders and appreciate the inclusive approach they are taking to solve the issues we all currently face.
“We are keen to maximise opportunities to accelerate progress together, and our Living Water partnership working with the Department of Conservation in five key freshwater catchments is a good example. We have committed to help restore an additional 50 catchments, working with farmers, scientists, the government and councils, mana whenua and communities.”
