DairyNZ wants people who have lost jobs due to Covid-19 to know there is plenty of work on dairy farms, especially in Waikato, Canterbury, Otago and Southland and that they might well earn more than in their previous role. With the national unemployment rate forecast to rise sharply due to Covid-19, DairyNZ is encouraging people to consider work on dairy farms in a new Go Dairy campaign that also includes entry-level training to help their transition to farming. “Immediately, there are 1,000 jobs up for grabs on dairy farms,” says DairyNZ’s chief executive Dr Tim Mackle. “As the new season gets underway on June 1, even more positions are likely to become available. For people who are looking for work and like the idea of caring for animals and the environment, there are lots of jobs and career progression opportunities.” While the Go Dairy career changers campaign, which is supported by Federated Farmers, aims to create awareness of the job opportunities, there is a big emphasis on ensuring new staff understand what is involved in farm life. “We want a win-win situation — for new dairy farming employees to be happy and fulfilled in their new lifestyle and jobs, and for farm employers to have great talent working for them,” Dr Mackle says. “Dairy also pays one of the highest average wages of all the primary sectors. For the most part, we are anticipating interested people will be from the regions where there are big job losses in tourism and hospitality — and where there is dairying close by. “An example is the dairy heartland of Waikato, which is also home to the Hobbiton and Waitomo Caves attractions, and the neighbouring Rotorua area, where there have been job losses, both direct and in the local support businesses.” Other dairy farming regions where there have been significant job losses include the South Island, in particular in Canterbury, Otago and Southland. “While new entrants to dairy farming would start off in the more junior roles, they can anticipate a rewarding career

pathway. Duck hunting confirmed Game bird hunters throughout the country have patiently waited for the announcement of the 2020 game bird season opening day. This year the season start date being marked on May 23 means the national tradition for hunters to come together and harvest game birds for the family dinner table is still possible. In consultation with Fish & Game New Zealand and the government, the season start date was selected so that hunters had time to equip themselves, prepare their maimais and travel to their hunting grounds. The alert level two conditions for game bird hunting are more practical for the hunters and has proven the benefits of waiting versus opting for the restrictions of alert level three. Hunters can travel inter-regionally and will be able to stay overnight at their hunting spots with friends and family under level two. While this offers the freedom duck hunters had hoped for, there are still considerations that need to be adhered to as outlined in the government’s level two guidelines for the safety of all involved. Hunters are able to travel, use their boats, and access public land under alert level two. That will mean communities that have relied on the game bird season for income and food supply will still have a season.

I show how to change the demeanour quickly and teach the horse to yield their feet to the person. It is a spatial thing, like a flight zone, a bubble

of air — it is not natural to people, and often a person doesn’t understand that a horse is trying to check that out with them. “The horse may step on their foot to move the person, and the person gets grumpy. The horse gets confused and then doesn’t know who should move first. It is communication, and the animal needs to feel safe and secure, and that scales up in the riding as well. “I teach about feeding horses properly because I had to learn how to feed my horse here. In the States, it is a more natural environment. Horses can get illnesses like laminitis, gut issues, and spores because they are not ruminants. You need to figure out ways to feed them like creating track systems where there is not much fodder. Let them out to graze for short periods and don’t let them have the richer grasses. “When you start feeling like you are having issues then it is good to call me. Large animals can be frightening — it’s not like a dog jumping up on you. They are big, powerful and complex creatures. “Some are ridden often, so they are more broke than others. Owners may be busy working and lucky to get six hours a week to ride, leaving the horses in the paddock. They want to get out and work so you have to hook it to be mentally with you, then they are your friend and will come to you at the gate. There are a lot of simple but complex things, and we have developed techniques that have mimicked a horse’s behaviour. “I love working out solutions for people and their horses and teach them how to read their horse. I have a lot

Kenny Finlayson and Terri Donaldson converted their 100 ha 170 dairy cow farm to organic as a way to give their animals a healthier life and care for the environment for future generations.
K
enny’s great-grandparents immigrated from Nova Scotia and for more than 27-years Kenny has farmed the property, which has been in his family since 1869. The couple decided to convert to organic three years ago. Wharepuke Organics is EU and NZ certified, and they are nearing full NOP certification this July. “The property sits on limestone and clay and is flat to rolling with bush. When you look after the land, the land looks after you, and we changed to organic because it is ethical and the right thing to do,” says Kenny. “We downsized from 200 cows to manage what we have well. Being organic you can’t buy feed in, and everything has to be produced on the
farm unless it is approved. We grew a multi-crop of chicory, plantain, red and white clover, maize, peas and sunflowers for summer feed. “It is scientifically proven that a variety of plant roots can interact and this grows humus and that grows topsoil, which stores carbon. Organic soil has healthy biology, which grows healthy feed. “The sunflowers provide high protein and the oil is good for animal health and is amazing for the cows’ coats. The flowers attract bees and are attractive in the paddocks. We have people ask to take photos when they are in bloom — it is a nice experience to be able to share. “We are also experimenting with a worm farm. I only use earthworms, and in six months they have created half a

The 170 dairy cows and replacement stock are all housed on the property in line with the organic way of life cubic metre of topsoil for our vegetable garden and fruit trees. We haven’t done anything but add vegetable and fruit scraps. People are amazed at how many worms can grow and how they produce soil.” Planting trees has also been a focus on the property. “The worst thing is the sun and the wind for the land and animals and with the climate changing animals need trees to stand under,” says Terri. “Trees lessen the effects of sun and wind burn off in summer to pasture. Cows can handle cold as they have internal heaters in their stomachs but they can’t handle heat. Tree roots also help the soils and the soil is the key to everything — if you get that right everything else will follow.” Production was up 10 per cent with fewer cows last year. “Milk production is stable with more cattle on the farm as all our youngstock for replacements can’t be farmed out as they need to graze organic,” says Kenny. “Our costs are way down because the farm is very self-sufficient with healthy soil. “We don’t spray so we don’t buy chemicals or drive the tractor every day. We grub thistles while we are waiting for the cows to move. Every aspect of organic farming is positive and happy. Every cowpat is the same all season with no diarrhoea. “Youngstock have good growth rates with great coats. We definitely have happy, calm, healthier cows and with

happy lines, which are the parallel lines of fat over the ribs. The lack of chemicals grows healthy grass, so cows eat less and we get more nutrient-rich ourselves. “The further we advance, the more passionate we become. The wider community is very supportive and want to learn as it is change and different from what we have been told to do. Organic is like the holistic approach, and we love meeting other organic farmers because they want to learn and share and help each other to do well. “I love the way it opens your mind to other ways of farming, growing soil health and increasing the microbiology
in the soil. The opportunities to learn, experiment and grow have been exciting and rewarding. We have fewer weeds, less mastitis and internal parasites are non-existent despite not using chemical drenches. “The rewards are numerous, the environmental pay off is organic soils, which are more capable of absorbing atmospheric carbon, soils leach fewer nitrates and absorb more moisture. It is mentally more stimulating with new ideas and methods to learn, and costs are down, and profits are up thanks to Fonterra’s organic premium and animal health is vastly improved.
“Recently, we started taking interested groups around the farm showing people how the system works, and we talk about sustainability, soil biology and environmental footprints. We enjoy sharing what Wharepuke Organics is all about and are considering pursuing eco-tourism and educational farm visits in the future. “We were just normal everyday conventional farmers, and if we can do it, anyone can do it. “Organic farming is a good lifestyle, it is a mind shift, and we have no regrets. We wish we had done it sooner.”

Creating an
ANIMAL REFUGE by Ann van Engelen With a vision to help animals of all shapes and sizes from across New Zealand get out of abusive situations alongside their owners, construction is underway for a pet refuge with farmers across the country offering to support large animals when necessary.
“I
became aware that some people experiencing family violence delay leaving out of fear for their pets’ lives and I want to help them,” says Pet Refuge founder Julie Chapman. “Often, victims have to choose between their safety and the safety of their pets as pets are part of their family. The refuge will take smaller animals like dogs, cats, and rabbits with farmers around the country ready to care for larger animals such as horses, pigs, goats and cows. “I am the founder of KidsCan helping children in school with necessities such as food and footwear, and we participated in research last year with Women’s Refuge. Nine hundred women answered that they had experienced
pet abuse alongside family violence. It showed dogs were the most abused, followed by cats, cows and horses. Twenty-three per cent had a pet killed by a partner. Fifty-three per cent delayed leaving to try and keep their pet safe, and 73 per cent would have left sooner if there was a place for their pet to go. “I love animals, and it has been a long-term dream to help them in some way, but I didn’t want to duplicate rescue services that already exist. Our intention is for the refuge to be secure in the permanent location for future generations.” The small animal shelter is on five acres at a secret location in the North Island. It will take up to 24 dogs, 35 cats and 15 smaller animals including rabbits, guinea pigs and birds.

Farmers across the country are offering to accommodate large animals such as pet cows, horses and goats
“We will open later this year, and once we are up and running, we would like to establish one in the South Island. We are building a network of safe farms around New Zealand to house the larger animals, including horses, cows, sheep, alpaca and pigs. We have more than 50 farmers ready to take large animals and care for them. “On farms, people have pet cows, sheep or other large animals, and it is proven that hurting animals is a means of control in family violence. The abuser is saying ‘if I can do this to the cow, horse, goat or dog, I can do this to you’. There are many stories of children witnessing their pets being tortured, abused or killed, and that
has a severe effect on a child’s mental health and wellbeing. “We will take pet referrals from Women’s Refuge, police and family violence organisations. Paid animal welfare staff will run the shelter, and caseworkers will work with victims. This was an unmet social issue and will give animals temporary housing so their families can leave the abusive situation. Most safe houses don’t allow pets so this removes one of the barriers that people face when they want to secure their own safety. They will be able to all leave together.” The animals will receive behaviour therapy, vet care, food and safety until they can be reunited with owners.
Pet Refuge is a charity that will keep animals safe for up to four months while their owners find safe accommodation
“We would like to see more landlords be open to renting to people with pets so they can remain together as this helps everyone, including the animals, to heal. The cold hard facts are the majority of abuse is men against women and children, and New Zealand has the highest rate of family violence reporting in the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). One in three women will experience partner violence at some point in their life, and 14 are killed by their partners or expartners each year. We acknowledge men are also victims of abuse, and we will certainly take their pets. “We have modelled our programmes on the RSPCA New South Wales

How to handle the bull by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland
There is an old farm saying that has found its way into popular parlance. It is “taking the bull by the horns.” It means grabbing an issue and vigorously and usually proactively resolving it, or at least mitigating the worst effects of it. To do that successfully takes vision, courage (after all we are talking about a bull, the saying is not taking the calf by the horns), insight and skill. Which is why I am immensely proud of the National Party and the major announcements we made about the steps National will take to get New Zealand back on its feet post Covid-19. No other party has done that. No other party has looked that far ahead. No other party has come up with, let alone announced, a comprehensive, workable policy that gives New Zealanders the hope that we can return to relative normality. Yet National, the party of the future, has done it — even in the midst of the Covid and looming constitutional crises. We have announced a GST claw-back scheme, a fiscally neutral loan of up to $250,000, business grants and other measures planned to keep businesses in business and people in work. These measures are needed. The government has done the job of containing the virus, but they are floundering with what to do next. Something has to happen. Without the measures already signalled by National, New Zealanders will likely face

Eventually, his ‘good’ knee became worse than the knee damaged in an accident. I contacted him this month, and in his own words, he thought the results were amazing. He has much less pain and is more mobile. He has come from a position where working was becoming increasingly difficult to now being more confident about the future. There are several lessons we can learn from this. The first is that our bodies have an extraordinary ability to heal. However, this healing is dependent on the smooth operation of the healing systems. In many cases, healing is restricted because the body system that is designed to heal the damage is somehow faulty or has just stopped functioning. The outcome of this is always disease. In this case, we made a number of changes. The first is to try and identify foods that either cause inflammation or in some way, restrict healing. Two of the most important groups of

During the Covid-19 alert level two, it might be a good time to contribute to the country’s economic recovery from the battering of lockdown by spending a little on repairs or maintenance around your home or business at a time when tradespeople can visit your home for the necessary work to be carried out. Be aware tradespeople do not need to wear personal protective equipment (such as face masks), but they must keep a one-metre distance from those in the home. So, if the idea gets your green light, there are a few things to look out for. Always hire registered or licensed tradespeople. The sector is one of professionals, and they will make life easy in making sure estimates and quotes are well researched given that your working brief is clear. By all means, shop around and get written estimates or quotes from different companies and choose tradespeople that are recommended by others — ask friends and family, or check online reviews. If they have the experience doing the type of work you need it helps to find a good fit — you need someone who understands your vision and family situation, and who you can talk to easily. Good communication is the best way to avoid problems down the track. Check your tradesperson is licensed for the work you’re hiring them to do, because if not, you might not be insured for damage caused by poor workmanship or even you may not be able to get the certificates you’ll need for council sign-

Cow collars key to monitoring Having the ability to monitor individual cow health and heat status is fast becoming a gamechanger for New Zealand dairy farmers. James and Rosie Pelham are equity partners of Acer Properties in Putaruru and are using Allflex collars to increase submission and conception rates, along with a move to full artificial breeding (AB). The couple purchased an Allflex monitoring system in August 2018, and they have never looked back. “We chose Allflex over competitors because it was proven technology and we preferred the software,” explains James. The goal was to take the time commitment off James and Rosie and use the reliability of the collars to identify cows that are on heat. It’s also given them the confidence to use short gestation semen and tighten up their calving pattern. The collars have also been a valuable investment for Airport Farm owners Ed and Melissa Whiting in Stratford. They started with just the collars and have now installed an Allflex ‘Intelligate’ drafting gate to complete the system. “We have significantly improved our cow health and calving is a breeze,” explains Ed. They have climbed from 420kg/ms a cow to 545kg/ms simply by focussing on the cows that ruminate well and the ones that are healthy. However, the biggest change has been in regards to people. “Mating is probably the easiest time of the year now. Anyone can be milking, and the cows on heat are ready and waiting, all drafted out automatically by the Allflex gate.”

Kiwi tradesmen, as well as their customers, are protected under the Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA) in the rare case a disagreement may ensue, but this process may be limited during current alert levels. Talk to the relevant business in the first instance because with Covid-19 as a major unexpected event — usual services may not be possible. Businesses need to meet their obligations under the CGA, but it may be reasonable for a repair, replacement or refund to take longer to process under current conditions. If you pay a business to provide a service and it’s sub-standard, you can ask them to fix the problem under the act, but in turn, they might not be liable if the reason they couldn’t finish was something out of their control. The act covers services usually bought for personal or household use. There are, in fact, four guarantees that apply, including: 1. Services will be provided with reasonable care and skill, and any work done must be at least as good as the work of a competent person with average skills and experience for that type of work. 2. Services will be fit for purpose. When you have told the service provider what work you want them to do, and they accept the job, they must make sure you get what you want. However, if you are not clear about what you want, the service provider might not be responsible if you don’t get it.

DairyNZ says the announcement of a $500,000 government fund for drought recovery will be appreciated by farmers in need of feed assistance but says it highlights the need for longterm solutions. “This fund increases the options for farmers and having coordinators in the North and South Islands will enable easier access to feed and farm support, which will be appreciated by many farmers,” said DairyNZ general manager — farm performance Sharon Morrell. “We encourage dairy farmers who need feed support to access this service, as taking action to set up for winter and the 2020/21 season is crucial right now. However, this year’s drought has affected thousands of farmers, and this fund may not extend as far as it is needed.” DairyNZ believes this year’s drought again highlights the urgent need for greater investment in water storage in key regions where dry conditions often have a big impact on farms. “Water storage is essential to giving farmers access to water, when and where farmers need it, in times of drought,” said Ms Morrell. “It is promising to see the government starting to move in this direction with water storage schemes recently announced for both Northland and Hawke’s Bay — but what is really needed is a coherent and coordinated National Water Storage Strategy. In the face of a changing climate, investing

Planning underway for avocado season Produce exporter Darling Group and its New Zealand avocado supply arm Just Avocados are gearing up for the 2020–21 season with optimism despite the challenges of Covid-19. Darling Group’s GM of Sales and Marketing Jacob Darling said the primary matters are increased freight rates, interrupted port operations and altered supply and demand trends affected by the slowdown of food service. “However, then, in contrast, we see online and offline retail are operating quite well.” He said Darling Group is working with their freight service providers and communicating directly with airlines to better understand what they can control for the coming season. “There is also discussion happening on possible collaboration with other exporters to ensure growers are not disadvantaged in uncertain times.” Darling said the 2020–21 export marketing strategy for Just Avocados would continue to focus on Asia and the building of Darling Group’s consumer brands Darling Avocado and Jake’s Avocado.
“Positive progress has been made towards our aim to put 50% of export volume into Asia; the total volume shipped last season increased from 28% [2018–19] to 42% [2019–20].” He said Darling Group’s Australian business operation continues to add value to their New Zealand avocado exports. “Darling Group’s new warehousing and logistics facility in Brisbane, due to be completed August 2020, is positioned to help ease the challenges of import handling and throughput. “Australian import protocols continue to be challenging so our investment in technology and capability to handle this well for our growers is important.” Darling said Just Avocados’ focus on accommodating growers’ needs had driven a plan to place 50% of their New Zealand avocado export volume into Australia and 50% into Asia.

Return of the Outlander by our Motoring Correspondent
If you think hard about the best quality items out there, and those that have stood the test of time in your garage and home, you’ll agree that it’s attention to detail, which makes a big difference. Ettore Bugatti, the father of the ultra-luxury brand that still carries his name (at great speed), once said that nobody remembers second best, but nobody forgets perfection. Another automaker quipped that ‘the quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten’, and he must have known a thing or two because he was one half of Rolls Royce. Both men had a good point, and it holds true for everything from ironing boards to trousers to motor vehicles. Something well made, where attention has been paid to the details that matter, will impress more than something flimsy but inexpensive. To put it another way, you might save once by snapping up a bargain-basement design. However, you’re paying your future self back with interest if you go for quality. This long preamble is all to do with the fact that Can-Am’s new Outlander quads have been built not to a budget, to annoy the competition, but to a standard that aims to embarrass it. The Outlander 570 DPS is the star of the line-up for features, but everywhere you’ll find little touches of added toughness, ease of maintenance and durability, which are the hallmark of engineers finalising the design, not bean counters. The big 570
packs an eight-valve v-twin churning out a dependable 48 horsepower, enabling a 590kg towing capacity and lots of torque, the tractive force that keeps offroad machines moving when the going gets muddy. There’s another example of building up to a standard; the auto-locking front diff on the new Outlander is primed to kick in earlier, and it doesn’t need a speed limiter, as you might find on other ATVs. Between this innovation, dynamic power steering and sure-footed four-wheel-drive on tap, the Outlander feels reassuringly stable as a platform for farming chores of all kinds. Fit a winch, add a two-up passenger seat, customise with packs, racks and tray options, and the underpinnings will still have that ‘bank vault door’ kind of build that ensures long life despite hard knocks. The best part is, when Rolls and Bugatti were talking up their well-made machines, they were asking punters to part with a big chunk of cash. While Can-Am has followed the advice of those

With a bit of classical history still echoing in my head from college days, I’d always thought it odd of Mitsubishi to call their big, burly 4x4 ute the Triton. Being a history nerd, I recalled (and didn’t Google, promise) that Triton was the son of the Greek sea god, a fearsome protector of the oceans armed with a triple-pointed trident spear and more muscles than the All Black’s front line put together. Great name for a powerboat, or a submarine, perhaps, but a ute? Are they suggesting that it will be good for towing a boat? That seems a little unimaginative, considering all the other jobs the original Triton could do. It’s all coming clear, as the 2020 model arrives with a burlier shape, a more aggressive, modern look and a handy amount of power and torque thanks to an efficient 2.5 litre inter-cooled turbo diesel engine. Triton himself went through a lot of changes over time, becoming a Greek god, a Libyan lake spirit who helped the Argonauts, then a Roman demigod, then, eventually, Aquaman. That’s right; the latest version of the prince of the oceans, and hence the Triton myth, is Jason Momoa. Hence Triton is a good name for a machine that’s gone through a lot of changes during the years to finally emerge in a modern form that packs a punch. For the Mitsubishi ute, that punch comes from the aforementioned motor, enabling a 3,500kg braked towing capacity and putting down 183 horsepower and 437 newton-metres of
