‘The Man from Matakohe’ reflects the life and times of Joseph Gordon Coates, the farm boy from Hukatere who went on to become a war hero and New Zealand’s first native-born Prime Minister. The exhibition has been more than two years in the making, and highlights commemorations to mark the 100th anniversary of World War 1. “We are thrilled to have a soldier of such stature in the Governor General opening a tribute to a war hero of the past,” said museum CEO, Lisa Tolich. “The exhibition opens on October 17 and re-tells Coates’s amazing story for a new generation of New Zealanders so they may understand the significant part he played in local, national and international events of his time,” she added. continued on page 3 …

The result has been credited to outgoing CEO, Steve Ruru, who has left to take up the same post with the Southland District Council. The Kaipara District Council adopted its annual report for the 2013/14 financial year on the day Mr Ruru departed. By law, the commissioners

had until the end of October to adopt the annual report but they approved the audited financial statements on September 30, a month ahead of schedule. Chief commissioner John Robertson says for the year 2013/2014 the council met two of its key goals.
