p Council, library and civic dignitaries gathered for the blessing and unveiling of Micaela van den Berg’s enormous new mural artwork last week, transforming the view along Normanby Street. More than a year in the making and taking two weeks of intensive work to paint, the mural is one of two artworks gracing the side of the library building in Dargaville. The other is Manos Nathan’s laser-cut metal sculpture He Tohu o Ngā Hau e Whā, depicting the manaia of the four winds. This work was reconsecrated with a blessing at the same time by Jack Rudolph. “I simply wanted to have something beautiful as part of Dargaville; something to make people smile,” said Ms van den Berg of her brightly coloured mural, depicting a tūī amid native foliage. The design was the winner of a Resene civic artwork contest, and as such all paints were donated as a prize. Scaffolding equipment was donated by Northland Scaffolding, while a team of volunteer painters helped Micaela meet her deadline.

The owners of the new superstore are Scott and Rachael Henderson, who have moved to Mangawhai with their young family to take up the challenge of operating the new enterprise. Scott has served 19 years with Foodstuffs, most recently in senior
management at the company’s large Westgate retail site. “We are so proud to be the couple who are bringing this amazing brand to your community,” he said, after emissaries from Te Uri O Hau performed a blessing. The Kaipara District Council’s
delegation and senior management from the Foodstuffs group looked on as Scott’s daughter Scarlett cut the ribbon. Seventy staff will be employed here.
