Now family, friends, fellow firefighters and distinguished guests from the extended Northland fire brigade community have celebrated Mr Murdoch’s remarkable achievement, which earnt him a double gold star, as a variety of awards were made to

brigade members at the station’s honours evening. On December 10, 1956, 18-yearold Gary, also affectionately known as ‘Maggot,’ joined the brigade straight out of the army. Attracted to the military style with which the organisation is

run and the comradeship, he went on to serve for 50 years — apart from a nine-year break. “They were hard men and the gear and trucks were very primitive,” Mr Murdoch said of the early days. continued on page 3 …
