p The Mangawhai Lions Club has donated $15,000 to the Mangawhai Coastguard following its fundraising success at its Food and Wine Festival sponsored by New World Mangawhai. With the Coastguard newly formed in the area, the funds will go towards a boat, trailer and a tractor wash. “Salt water takes a toll on rescue equipment,” said Mandy Hebben. “By ensuring every inch of equipment is thoroughly cleaned after each operation, Coastguard Mangawhai can extend the lifespan of its assets, reduce maintenance costs, and remain mission‑ready at a moment’s notice. The waste disposal company is seeking overarching government approval to dump on a massive freshwater source and catchment of the Kaipara Harbour, despite the still-pending Forest and Bird court appeal against the Environment Court’s conditional approval of the dump site.
FTT counsel Andrew Braggins of The Environmental Lawyers says the project will destroy approximately 12km of streams and extensive amounts of native flora and fauna. “Our client’s concern is that this new initiative is an attempt to bully the courts and parties at this stage of a long legal
