Gumboots to ballet shoes  by Sheri O’Neill

Against stiff competition, 17-year-old Charlotte Gleeson from Ruawai has been accepted for the New Zealand School of Dance, renowned for grooming talented dancers for the New Zealand Royal Ballet Company and international career prospects. This Easter, on her first trip home from studies in Wellington, Charlotte was more than happy to be swapping ballet shoes for gumboots on the Ruawai family farm. During the audition process Charlotte took part in both a classical and a contemporar y technique class and then performed a solo in front of the 12 person board. Of around 70 in her audition intake, she was one of only seven New Zealanders accepted for the entry class of 18 students majoring in classical ballet. “It wasn’t a great start — my plane from Whangarei was cancelled because of weather and I had to get a taxi to Auckland, grabbing the last seat on a plane to Wellington and arriving only just in time. So I wasn’t as confident as I might have been — but I held a picture in my mind that I might get in,” she said last week from Wellington, now several gruelling weeks into her first year. “It’s been unbelievable, but I’m still a farm girl at heart and I’m so looking forward to the Easter break.” With Charlotte’s typical day at the

school starting at 8.30am and not finishing until 6pm, and at least 25 hours of her week spent actively dancing, that’s not surprising. “They started us off with a week of warm-up classes, and it’s good they did. That first week every muscle was so sore. But now I’m into the routine it’s okay, although I spent three days recently recovering from a lumbar strain. They teach you how to avoid and manage injuries, but they’re part of being a dancer.” In addition to dance classes, Charlotte also studies anatomy, nutrition, music, dance history and Maori studies. Around 80% of all students at the school go on to full time employment in a ballet company, either here or overseas, and Charlotte says although she gets nervous, performance is the best part of being a dancer and definitely her goal. First studying ballet at the King School of Dance in Te Kopuru, for the last few years Charlotte was a student of the Northern Dance Academy in Kerikeri. “I’ve tried heaps of other

things — netball, violin, horse-riding and touch rugby, but I’ve always come back to ballet. “I love New Zealand and it would be my first choice

to dance here, ultimately in the New Zealand Royal Ballet Company.” But right now, Charlotte says, “I can’t wait to get home and jump on a horse.”
