They s ay while recreational fishermen are encouraged to clean and dry boats and equipment before launching in different areas to stop the spread of invasive species, this does not seem to apply to commercial boats. “Much like recreational fishermen being required to display navigation lights at night. These harbour hoppers seem to operate in complete darkness, causing a real hazard for others using the water,” says Karl. “These boats can carry up to 1,000 metres of commercial net each. That’s four kilometres of net in our tiny waterways and creeks — the fish don’t get a chance to breed properly. The untraditional methods of hitting the water with sticks (plonking) and zooming around with outboards half out of the water as they attempt to scare them into the nets can be very stressful for our fish and can cause them to drop roe early.

“Local commercial operators have fished these waters sustainably for decades, even generations. Now, the huge decline is forcing them into selling up and early retirement. This is happening right in front of our marae and favourite beaches, and it’s time for change. “While many have approached MPI and asked for records on how many and what species of fish are being declared caught in the Kaipara, MPI has refused to give out this information.” The group also cites the fact that as far back as 2004, a National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) study on the status of commercial fishing of flatfish, grey mullet and rig in the Kaipara found that catch rates had declined. The report indicated increasing commercial fishing pressure, with a growing proportion of landings of each species originating from the Kaipara. They say that “wake-up call” has been ignored by MPI. ¢

“We’re gathered here to celebrate the naming of a new public road, which is not something that comes up very often,” said Mr Larsen to a gathering of local dignitaries last Wednesday. That road is a new link connecting public amenities, such as a new park, to the Wood Street shopping and dining precinct, and when it came time to pick a name, popular opinion settled on a man who has served his community for four decades and counting. “Mark Farnsworth’s involvement goes back a long way, and spans our whole district and beyond,” said Mr Larsen. “For well over 40 years he has dedicated his time, knowledge and leadership.” Mr Farnsworth is a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, who has served in firefighting, on the ministerial committee for agriculture, on the Kaipara Licensing Committee since its inception, and on the National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee. He’s also put in 10 years leading school boards of trustees, and served six terms as an NRC councilman, added to two more at the table of the old Hobson County Council. judicial justice of the peace — he’s done it all. “I’m not going to say much, because I’m speechless,” said Mr Farnsworth, as he contemplated the road named in his honour. He gave full credit to his wife, Michelle, for years of supporting his community efforts, and reiterated that in public service you do not expect to be rewarded, but that it’s very pleasant when you are. ¢

Paddocks making up part of Mr Davidson’s farm on the Poutō Peninsula do run down to Anzac Street and Empire Street on Dargaville’s outer reaches. Homes in that area are served by a small localised wastewater system. Brynderwyn route to open The opening of the Brynderwyn Road Deviation by the Hon Mr Nash in a few days’ time will mark the successful completion of the most ambitious highway project in Northland, and will mark another stage in the modernising of the roads in the district. Of its kind, the Brynderwyn Deviation is one of the most remarkable works ever undertaken in New Zealand. It represents a bold and imaginative scheme by which the distance between Whangarei and Auckland is substantially reduced, while the extensive reconstruction of an old and somewhat tortuous section of road is avoided. A future generation of motorists, sailing serenely over the easy grades of the Brynderwyn Deviation, and pausing to admire the magnificent view from the top, will never know of the ugly twists and turns on the old road; and, except those whose business takes them to Maungaturoto, the Waipu Gorge will be just a legend. A game of monotony

Democracy eroded?

New Zealand has only two big movers in the supermarket game — Woolworths and Foodstuffs — illustrating what happens when the free market becomes a duopoly. That’s the final stage before the m-word. We all know how monopoly ends. Your brother flips the table when mum owns all the hotels. The board game was designed to teach people how a healthy free market can devolve into a toxic oligarchy, and we’ve all seen it work. The trouble is, when the board gets flipped in real life, it’s often replaced with a much bloodier game, more like Risk or Axis and Allies. Last week, an idea was floated to break the supermarket duopoly, which has been accused of reaping ‘excess profits’ during a bitingly grim cost of living crisis. Nationalising supermarkets to force competition was called everything from ‘visionary’ to ‘Stalinist’ in the press. The sight of self-confessed, chest-beating ‘capitalists’ ranting against competition was priceless. The sight of self-confessed flag-flying socialists keen to get into commerce was equally so. There’s a deeper reason why just buying supermarkets might prove problematic, and it’s got less to do with the hammer and sickle and more to do with the iron gauntlet on Adam Smith’s ‘invisible hand’. There’s an ugly little spin term called vertical integration we need to talk about. It goes like this: supermarkets need

to buy their stock from somewhere, and that ‘somewhere’ is a wholesale supplier. In New Zealand, there are three big ones, and they are the firms that make deals with food manufacturers, importers and growers. According to Consumer NZ, Wholesale Distributors is owned by, and predominantly sells to, Woolworths group stores. Trents is owned by Foodstuffs South Island, and predominantly sells to them. Gilmours is owned by Foodstuffs North Island, and predominantly sells to them. It’s reported that while other, smaller players such as petrol stations and dairies also buy from these wholesalers, the Commerce Commission discovered in a market study that it was often cheaper for these third parties to just shop at the supermarket. A nationalised supermarket would have to buy its stock from an effective duopoly, in an attempt to break the duopoly. That’s like trying to win a war when you have to buy bullets from the other side. Despite attempts by certain grifters to deny it, the cost of living crisis is real. Record profits are not trickling down. Solutions are needed — and have been called for since 2022. It’s time to look at how other nations solved this problem, and copy their best ideas. Leaving things alone until the table’s upside down serves none of us. ¢

Protecting natural taonga How many of the locals and general public know that cat ownership carries an obligation to curb the incidence of cat fouling in the environment? The Department of Conservation supports this with facts, noting that toxoplasmosis from cats can adversely affect Māui dolphins. It’s interesting that a current petition to ban fishing that endangers

these dolphins is getting a lot of attention, and that’s great, as these dolphins have cultural significance for Māori. For years, cats have roamed free and not been microchipped; they poop anywhere they want. Is it time for that to change? M Smithe, Dargaville

Recent governments want us dependent on the internet. The internet is a useful tool but also a massive security and privacy threat to individuals and the nation. I am concerned about the ongoing loss of democracy, sovereignty and freedom in New Zealand. As an example, we need a viable postal service, but for many people NZ Post is now so expensive it is no longer fit for purpose. Road safety campaigners have designated September as Motorcycle Awareness Month.

The Rally of Whangārei will roll out on west Kaipara roads this Saturday, undeterred by the move of the pit and staging area to a closed Northland Field Days site location.

So far this year, motorcycle crashes have resulted in three serious injuries in Kaipara, 11 serious injuries and three fatalities in Whangārei District, and 12 serious injuries and one death in the Far North. “Bringing organisations and riders together to focus on practical solutions is an important step towards making our roads safer for everyone,” said Northland Road Safety Trust manager Ashley Johnston.

As part of the month, riders took part in a free Rider Down and Basic Handling Skills event in Whangārei last week to give riders practical, hands-on skills supported by Ride Forever, professional motorcycle instructors, and Hato Hone St John critical care paramedic Mark Going to provide riders with practical crashresponse and lifesaving skills. “The initiative brings together organisations with a shared commit ment to reducing deaths and serious injuries on our roads,” says Johnston. “Motorcycle safety is a shared responsibility, and initiatives such as this provide a valuable opportunity to engage directly with riders and support them to make safer decisions, improve their skills, and be better prepared if something goes wrong.” Hato Hone St John’s Callum Bracey says improved motorcycle safety is critical. “Our emergency ambulance crews regularly attend incidents involving motorcyclists and see first-hand the devastating impact these crashes can have on riders and their families. There are simple steps motorcyclists can take to improve their safety and reduce the risk of serious injuries.” ¢

Here’s where to catch the real action — the racers doing the business on Kaipara gravel. First up, arm yourself with maps of the stages at rallywhangarei.co.nz/ spectators. Then take some top tips from our photo team about where to see the best racing. Stage one at Houto launches at 6.50am, but keen fans can find a good p Be safe, listen to the race marshals, and bring your camera place to watch cars hit the finish line in the dawn light. Where Houto loop, and there’s a great spot to watch Road meets Kirikopuni Valley Road, the the action where Access Road meets finish line sits in an area of forest, and Greenhill Road. Tuck down Wallace Road there’s a safe spot to see the action as off SH12 to get there. Otherwise, come and see the cars blast by where Rehia racers charge for the chequered flag. Stages five (noon) and seven (2.30pm) are best seen at a tight and tricky corner where Waihue Road bends into Opanake take in Tokatoka, with the start and Road. Come in from Mamaranui and stop gates just past where Tokatoka you’ll see the spot, just over a bridge; Road meets Blong Road. The best it’s been the site of some drifting and viewing, however, is where Inch Road meets Tokatoka Road, and it’s best gear-crunching in previous years. Stages four (11am) and six (1.30pm) accessed round the back of the rock via rock in Ruawai, tackling the Greenhill Mititai Road. ¢

Road closures in place for rally weekend The International Rally of Whangarei is coming to Kaipara this weekend, with a number of local roads temporarily affected by rally activity. If you live on an affected road, you will have received a notification letter from the rally organisers. You can view road closure maps and event information on the Rally of Whangarei website or visit our website for public notices. The Dargaville Service Park has been relocated to the Northland Field Days site on SH14, east of Dargaville. If you’d like to see the rally cars up close while they’re being serviced, the service area in Ruawai will be open and accessible to spectators. Please allow extra travel time and follow directions from event officials.

Paparoa Oakleigh Road Good progress is being made on Paparoa Oakleigh Road, with stabilising work complete and sealing prep underway. Sealing is scheduled to begin on Monday 21 September, then the team will do sweeping and line marking, with the road scheduled to open on schedule by 23 September (weather depending).

Tsunami siren testing The start of daylight savings means it’s time for our sixmonthly tsunami siren test. On Sunday 27 September, the sirens will sound once at 10am for around two minutes and will be monitored for any faults. The sirens will play the familiar siren tone followed by a test voice warning message about the threat and any action required.

After relocating from West Auckland and settling in Tomarata, Tāne Petersen-Hodgson is bringing his love for helping the community to Mangawhai with his free dog training workshop this Sunday. “My wife was a big advocate for animals, and she showed me an emotional side of animals. Being a logical thinker, I saw that by having that relationship with dogs, you can get a lot more out of them by having a good relationship with them,” said Tāne. Becoming serious about the benefits dogs can provide, Tāne began learning from dog trainers from the US, became a professional instructor, and founded 100%K9. “I used to live in an area where we’d had a lot of roaming dogs, and that was how I started in dog training — working in public and with my dogs. I would help out the community, and people would come to the park knowing that I was working with dogs. “We ran free workshops and built a community where I would come in and help them with certain things. We can do something similar here, and now is a good time.” While free dog training workshops for pet owners were just the beginning, Tāne says a major vision of his is working with children and teaching them about dog safety. “I have a huge passion for giving young children outdoor activities, seeing as the world we live in is very isolating, and
