p The Ruawai College AIMS team were one of six Kaipara schools representing the district last week. Other schools included Dargaville Intermediate, Mangawhai Beach School, Mangawhai Hills College, Ōtamatea High School and a home school team. Ruawai students Ava and Anthony report that the 3x3 was more challenging and faster than five-a-side and placed fourth overall. Anthony and Niko received the Most Valuable Player for each of their teams. The students are grateful to their parents and everyone in the community who supported them to attend the national tournament. “The team went absolutely amazing; I couldn’t have asked for better,” says Ruawai sports coordinator Ruby Carey. “One of the perks of being a small community is that everyone backs everyone.”

While media coverage of the campaign is certain to be comprehensive, the true test of politicians and their ideas to shape a better nation comes in personal debate against their peers. Four televised debates will be hosted on TVNZ, starting with a leaders’ debate on Tuesday, October 6. However, a live, old-fashioned town hall meeting is what many voters desire — a chance to see our would-be leaders in the flesh to answer locally relevant questions. In Dargaville, this function has
been provided for many local and national election cycles by Grey Power, and it’s indicated that this group is seeking to organise a debate for west Kaipara during election season. For those in eastern Kaipara, mark the date — Thursday, October 22. On that day, at 6.30pm, the Kaipara Lifestyler and Rural Matters Limited will convene a local candidates debate, hosted at the Mangawhai Golf Club.
