The chemotherapy infusion unit was blessed by kaumātua Rex Nathan at a ceremony attended by senior health officials, hospital administrators, doctors, nurses and representatives of the Cancer Society NZ. Patients were at the centre of discussion during speeches, and they were present too; the locals who this effort of clinical expansion is designed to serve. In very real terms it’s a lifesaver. Those battling cancer used to have to commit to a long drive to Whangārei, an expense and a trial repeated more than 390 times by local patients last year alone. Now a dedicated space with the latest in treatment equipment is on-site in Dargaville, in a suite brightened by artwork from Christine den Hartogh.
“When we think back to when (surgical) operations here were removed, there was the threat that the hospital would close,” said Mr Nathan. “Isn’t it great to have a new service at our hospital, an expansion, which will serve such a large part of our community?” “I have always said that we can do anything in Kaipara, and this is evidence of that fact,” said hospital operations manager Jen Thomas. “This was our operating theatre block when it closed in 1994. We’ve been able to use every bit of space in this hospital by adding services. It’s going to be life-changing.” “For a long time we have known that geography should not be a barrier to
better care in New Zealand. Better care closer to home really does matter,” said oncologist Dr Vincent Newton. “How fantastic it is to have new services here in Dargaville,” said Kaipara Community Health Trust spokesperson Debbie Evans. “It’s so much nicer to have outpatient services like these here, to keep families closer together.” Specialist nurses and staff are also part of the expansion. Right now, these professionals are from further afield, but these roles will be filled in future by the Dargaville Hospital team. It all adds up to less stress, better care, closer family connections and positive outcomes for patients. ¢
