Professor Doug Sutton of Massey University spoke in Dargaville last week, and offered a simple analysis of just one aspect of possible future farming plans for the district. He noted that there are approximately 5,800 hectares of highquality irrigated land in horticulture across Northland, just 1% of all agricultural land. land within a 30-minute drive of central Dargaville. Thus, high-value horticulture could become an annual half-billion dollar industry, locally. For context, it’s estimated the kauri gum trade, in its entirety from 1850 to 1950, generated $500 million when adjusted for inflation. In 1907, at the height of the kauri timber boom, timber exports only narrowly exceeded this sum per annum. “This alone is a sole and sufficient reason for believing that Dargaville is set for a major economic revitalisation,” said Dr Sutton. “High-value crops grown
here will be needed to feed a projected population of 2.2 million in Auckland in the near future, as well as export markets.” Dr Sutton highlighted the need to pivot toward what’s most profitable, and those industries which can generate jobs with living wages to provide local prosperity. The key to those jobs going to Kiwis is education, the reason for Massey’s interest in establishing a tertiary hub in Dargaville. “The university I represent has decided that it’s going to take this on,” said Dr Sutton. “We must get more of our kids into evidence-based tertiary education.” ¢
