Recommendations to close the popular lake to powered craft came from the Taharoa Domain committee in 2025, as the gold clam took hold in Waikato waterways. The Kaipara District Council opted at the time to educate boaties and promote good washdown procedures. Legal advice was sought, and this indicated that it was the Northland Regional Council that could enact a powerboat ban, not the KDC. Now, the gold clam, a fast-breeding pest which destroys ecosystems, has been found in Lake Rotomanu near New Plymouth. The only solution is a drastic one; the council there is draining the entire lake dry to try to kill the clam. If this works, which is no guarantee, it will be the first time the gold clam has ever been eradicated
from a body of water, anywhere in the world. At a meeting of the KDC on December 10, elected members agreed to invoke its powers under the Reserves Act in support of the installation of a monitored gate at Taharoa Domain, which will be emplaced by the Northland Regional Council and designed to lock out watercraft not washed down to prevent the spread of the invasive clam. Any costs associated with the installation, operation and maintenance of the gate are to be the responsibility of the Northland Regional Council,” said mayor Larsen. “I think a monitored gate linked to the washdown and hygiene processes that are currently being undertaken is a good step in the management programme

of restricting the risk,” said councillor Snow Tane. A team made up of the NRC, Te Roroa and Te Kuihi swung into action to monitor the boat ramp during the busy summer period, and now the installation of the gate is imminent. It will be a self-policing system, however. It will rely on boat owners to complete an online checklist to declare their boat is clean. This relies on honesty and could be subverted. A hot washdown station has also been proposed by former council candidate Rodney Field, who was even prepared to have such a facility built on his own land to help stop the gold clam. Mr Field noted in his campaign that high temperatures are needed to kill the tenacious gold clam larvae, but for now, the KDC is proceeding with the gate option. ¢

A plaque commemorating the disaster was commissioned by Rotarians for the entrance to Baylys Beach, and in late December this monument was reconsecrated after the reconstruction of the boardwalk at Baylys, and the commission of a new mural on the wall where the plaque is mounted.

Kaihū Valley Schools local marae, Waikaraka, welcomed Mōtatau Kura with open arms, housing the school of more than 80 tamariki and whānau. The three-day camp, organised by mother and daughter team Donna (Mōtatau principal) and Te Paea Adams (KVS), saw students paddling waka, cycling and swimming at the Taharoa Domain and ending with a visit to Tāne Mahuta. “Hoe waka brings together a whole lot of learning, not just being out on the water paddling. It’s about whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga and much more,” said principal Adams. Te Korowai kaihautuū (host) Cheryl Meek shared her love for her culture with students and families in December
by bringing the traditional fishing waka to Kaipara. “We took them out earlier in the year in Waitangi, and they are fortunate enough to paddle on Lake Waikare,” said Cheryl. “It is about sharing mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) and Mātauranga-āiwi (iwi knowledge) with the tamariki and the whānau.” Imparting her knowledge of the waka and Māori culture, children got to paddle and sing waiata as they rowed on Lake Waikare with others present. “Now, they have experienced the waka on their own water, which may not have been seen in their lifetime. This type of waka was used for women, men and tamariki to go fishing, but these days, we use them for educational purposes.” ¢

A look back at the big issues and events that shaped Kaipara during 2025 — this was your year.
p Dargaville’s big Easter Egg Hunt was a highlight for families and chocolate lovers
The year began with big news; a wind farm long planned to be constructed at Omamari was confirmed for groundbreaking, and the Dargaville Little Theatre was invited to send a group to Monaco to present the locally created play, Out Of Mind, to an international audience. The year began with a big Poutō Lighthouse Challenge, a nomination
p A huge regatta on the Northern Wairoa River was one of the biggest nautical displays in recent Kaipara history
for the international Earthshot Prize for the Kaipara Moana Remediation organisation. Then a devastating tornado touched down in Mangawhai, stirring memories of Cyclone Gabrielle. However, there was good news on the east coast, too. A great breeding season for the fairy tern, tara iti, followed innovative captive-raising techniques developed by
locals, zoologists and the Department of Conservation. Summer was a time for big shows, including successful A&P Shows at Paparoa and Arapohue, and hot rod and classics shows in Dargaville and Mangawhai. The Northland Field Days debuted a big outdoor adventure zone as patrons flocked in.
Meanwhile, Waipoua Forest was saved in March by the efforts of firefighters, just as water woes for Dargaville came to a head. Dry weather was just the beginning of the town’s liquid issues as the year went on. A burst pipe, caused by maintenance errors later in the year, also highlighted the need for a solution. Water Trust, opened in Redhill later in the year, a pipeline, now under construction, was proposed as a water fix. There was cause to celebrate as new events and new facilities opened across Kaipara. The Mangawhai Activity Zone gained the world’s biggest skateboard, Dargaville hosted its first singers and songwriters festival, and Maungatūroto gained a new art gallery. Mangawhai Library went full-time, its local Rotarians expanded their learn to sail programme, and Paparoa gained a new fire station. Mid-year, the Ōtamatea Repertory Theatre earned applause with an allyouth production of Chitty Chitty Bang
Bang, and DLT helped boost funds for the Monaco contingent with a run of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. Communities rallied to make positive changes; an edible village project for Maungatūroto and an immense Trash and Treasure raising funds for St John. A new wharf opened for Poutō, and a new Coastguard unit for Mangawhai. Change came, too, for Dargaville High School, with commissioner Barbara Ala’alatoa appointed to replace the board and Curtis Gaylor stepping up as principal to steer a new course. continued on next page

The big issues in an election year for the Kaipara District Council focussed on water supply and fluoride, with former mayor Craig Jepson backing Whangārei’s stance on keeping it out. Sand mining hit the headlines again as locals, victorious in stopping the practice in Mangawhai, rallied to assist protestors in Bream Bay. The Dome Valley mega-dump galvanised public outrage, while protests by teachers and nurses hit the streets for fair pay, and Dargaville Hospital’s lack of all-night doctor coverage prompted controversy. The Dargaville Museum turned 40, and
the Northland Field Days is about to do the same. There are those recorded in history who were far from law-abiding citizens, and the Kaipara District had some characters who didn’t learn from their indiscretions.
Two people drowned in an incident just north of Glinks Gully on the Ripirō coast on Saturday, despite valiant efforts by surf lifesavers to revive them. Police received reports of two men struggling in the water at 6.50pm and contacted surf lifesavers, who responded by deploying a rescue boat and first responders. Unfortunately, neither person was able to be resuscitated. Local iwi called for a rāhui in the immediate area and thanked those who observed this mark of respect for those who died. ¢
Take the case of Irish-born Desmond Henry Hurst O’Connor, who was caught, along with a man named William Bell, using money intended for tradesmen and groceries at the Maungatūroto transmission camp. Bell had taken the money and later told the court he had spent it all on ‘booze, taxis and pictures’ in Auckland. Then, it came to the pair being charged for using £10 to lay a bet on a horse named Lord Brierley that came dead last in the 1936 New Zealand Cup. Bell was given probation while O’Connor was imprisoned — sentenced to three months’ hard labour. So it’s back ter werk for me. “Dog, first up we gonna go round an’ tally tha stock, check tha troffs ina paddicks, patrol tha fencelines, an’ the list goes on,” seda Boss. Well readas, I kin only wish the beech hollyday we had at Pahi was still going on. Boy we hada grate time ’cos there was kids to play with, seagulls ter chase ona sandy beach, an’ swims too. An’ boy, there was lotsa barbies an’ lots of leftovers for us four-legged campers. The wether was a bit up an’ down wiv wind and rain but we had sunshine, too. About tha only downside for some of me town dog mates that were ina camp was that blimmin’ noise on tha last day of las’ year. Now I go duck huntin’ wiva Boss, so I got no wurry with big bangs from his shotting gun. So people setting off explosions ina sky at midnight just woke me up. But me town dog campin’ mates nearly had blimmin’ hart attacks. But anyway, hear we is back ona farm and we just headed down ter smoko ona woolshed steps jus’ like we do every day, an’ Sharlene was lookin’ atta papa froma kasttil stop atta road gate. She tole Boss “Deah, looks like we gonna do okay this year ona farm.” An’ she read in her skoolteecher voice:
