Leading youth in their sporting pursuits for more than 30 years, Robyn says the acknowledgement was humbling and unexpected. “Although I am a key part of the cog, there are also many other people working alongside me. This KSM is an acknowledgement of all of our work,” said Robyn. “I first became involved with coaching hockey for the year five and six boys’ and girls’ team in 1981 at Orewa. Once I got married and had a family of my own, I got involved in what my children

did with Plunket days, hockey, swimming, athletics and others.” Having been involved in managing and coaching in various sporting codes, including more recently the Duke of Edinburgh (DOE) programme, her service was what she loved to do. “The DOE is my latest passion. For 20-odd years, I have been a coordinator at Ōtamatea High School. To date, there have been 129 students who have been presented their gold award — it is really special.”

Seeing youth experience life-changing moments on mountain tops and other parts of New Zealand has been the highlight of her service. “It is rewarding. I had some special coaches throughout my life, and they were my role models, so for me, my work is about giving back to the community. “Thank you to everybody whom I’ve worked with — students, coaches and mentors who I’ve had throughout my journey.” ¢

Pahi’s Anniversary Weekend highlight event is back on January 24–25 with $1,000 on offer in the organising Pahi Boating and Fishing Club’s raft race event in its line-up of aquatic and landbased attractions.

Mangawhai community leaders have come together to arrange a whole day of fun in celebration of Waitangi Day, a time of togetherness honouring New Zealand’s founding.

The festivities begin at 9am with a ceremony at the Mangawhai Museum, welcoming locals and guests and commemorating the historic signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. There will be addresses from civic dignitaries to acknowledge the importance of our national day, and then the museum will be opened to the public free of charge for the rest of the day, as a venue for fun events and activities. Just down the road at the Lincoln Reserve, the maritime heritage of the east coast will be brought to life in the modern day, with an exciting programme of traditional waka ama and the chance to set sail in the kind of small boats that once took the place of cars and roads for those who lived in Mangawhai in the 1840s.

If you don’t have a sailing boat of your own, there will be small craft to borrow, thanks to the good people of the Mangawhai Sailing group. The day will culminate with a huge live concert, packing the Mangawhai Activity Zone with song and celebration. Last year’s performance schedule was legendary in its scope, and this year a range of artists and local entertainers are ready to take to the stage from 5.30pm until evening falls, with lots of tasty food options on-site as well. The Northland Field Days is a celebration of farming and rural life, and part of that vibrancy is reflected in the annual silage bale art competition, where the entrants are very literally outstanding in their field. Silage bales dot the landscape in rural New Zealand, little icons of industry and sustainability, which have become ubiquitous to anyone who has road-tripped through the countryside. The Dargaville Mediaeval Combat Club has grown to the point where local knights-in-training were able to run their own mini tournament in late December.

Visitors to the Waipu Highland Games on the last day of 2025 would have seen displays of intricately choreographed Scottish dancing, but they may not have realised just how good this form of exercise is for the brain.

The club was formed by local enthusiasts who have a passion for the ancient martial arts of Europe. Summer’s here, what about the animals? The effects of more sunlight and warmer temperatures are being enjoyed across the district as summer officially begins with the start of December. However, not everyone on the farm enjoys the warmer weather. Heat stress and sunburn are common problems in farm animals this time of the year, and are often easily prevented. With the UV levels reaching 11 or more recently, people have been feeling the burn, and the harsh reality of the southern hemisphere sun is that it can burn all species equally. Increased temperature and humidity cause reduced grazing in cattle, ‘mobbing up’ in the paddock, increased water consumption and shade-seeking behaviour. This can not only be a nuisance for the beasts, but can reduce yield and weight gain. By providing shade where possible, farmers can help to reduce the effects of warmer temperatures on the herd. The hot weather affects livestock and farm animals in the same way it affects us. The summer months are a time when exertion and stress are felt more keenly by humans, so giving some consideration to how the temperature impacts other species. Allowing cows to walk at their own pace during a shift or at milking time

reduces the risk of lameness as well as heat stress. Breed differences are noted, with Friesian cows more affected than Jerseys, and heavier animals struggling more in general. We also see more cases of sunburn, too. This occurs in species with exposed skin and is particularly prevalent in collie-type dogs with no fur on their nose, cattle that have previously reacted to the sun and horses with lighter muzzles. Avoidance is the best tool, and minimising exposure during the period from noon to mid-afternoon helps greatly. Your local veterinarian will also stock sunblock zinc creams that can help prevent painful burns. A final note: look after yourself in the sun as well. Working or playing, make sure that you apply sunscreen, slap on a broad-brimmed hat, wear your sunnies and try to stay in the shade during the most fierce parts of the day. Stay cool, stay hydrated and plan your work schedule to utilise the longer hours of daylight when it’s cool in the mornings and evenings if you can. ¢

It’s beginning to look a lot like election year Sometimes the devil is in the details, and that devil sits on your shoulder for days after you notice the detail in question, whispering that something is not quite right. An example can be found amid the details of the Employment Relations Amendment Bill. It’s a series of changes to Kiwi employment law unions have slammed for trying to introduce some of the worst aspects of the US workplace, such as the right to fire staff at will with curtailed legal recourse. The Labour Party damned the amendment, too. That’s predictable rhetoric for both these factions, in an election year that will be all about the cost of living and the ability to prosper by working a normal job. One of the provisions of the bill is about who gets classed as a contractor; pointedly, a worker who has no right to sick leave, parental leave or holidays. There’s already a robust test to determine if you are a contractor or an employee in the existing Employment Relations Act. The proposed new ‘gateway’ test makes it easier for you to be classified as a contractor. A little controversial, but what’s the problem? That comes down to a court case lost by international rideshare company Uber last November. In the case of four Kiwi Uber drivers who claimed that they were, in fact, employees, Justice Forrest Miller agreed with the Employment Court and Court of Appeal; they were employees. Did Uber concede quietly? Perhaps not entirely. It reportedly helped frame a new legislative amendment, which

would change things in the future. Evidence presented by LawNews suggests that a written draft presented to the government by the rideshare giant has been dropped into the Employment Relations Amendment Bill in eerily identical words. “Brooke van Velden drafted aspects of the bill to please corporate lobbyists for multinationals like Uber, and now, following the Supreme Court win for the Uber drivers, the government has made changes that will prevent those workers from achieving any justice,” opined New Zealand Council of Trade Unions president Sandra Grey. Did a foreign corporation just write a piece of law for our government? The allegation is out there in the digital wild, but the truth may be more subtle. What this issue raises is a question of influence. Would we be happy to see a foreign leader like Vladimir Putin or Keir Starmer writing amendments to our laws? What is the difference when corporations might do the same? In an election year, we should be looking very hard at who makes big donations to every party, and what they might expect in return. It’s by no means partisan. The whole spectrum of politics has been placed in a position where the biggest campaign war chest often means victory. Is it time to overhaul how cash influences elections? Alternatively, perhaps this most recent oddity of coincidence, jurisprudence, corporate will and timing means that transparency sits above all. ¢

The first reference to “New Year’s resolutions” came from a Boston newspaper in the year 1813 and was, unsurprisingly, accompanied by a story about giving up strong drink to avoid a post-holiday hangover. However, the idea of making good choices at the start of a new year has a much longer and more storied history; one that’s even affected the calendar itself. The first ever recorded New Year celebrations came down to us from 4000 BCE, when the festival of Akitu marked the beginning of the Babylonian new year in what is now March. The start of the planting season was just around the corner, and devout Babylonians would make promises to do good deeds and make up for their errors to ensure their gods were happy enough to guarantee a good crop. This meant giving back things that had been borrowed, performing acts of kindness for neighbours and friends, and pledging to be a more moral person. While divine favour may or may not have really been involved, socially, it was a great time to patch up fractured friendships, be neighbourly and forgive transgressions. Everyone had to work very hard together to get the planting done, and a festival that made the community stronger at this time was a very good idea.

Patronage was most valuable at this time, when many warriors needed the good graces of those who owned the supplies of food to survive until spring. Christian knights saw the timing as appropriate for another reason. After the peaceful spiritual contemplation afforded by Christmas, the new year was time to turn back to worldly matters. Battery power has advanced to the point where it’s not just the equal of petrol in some applications now; it’s the preferred choice. One of the places where modern electric power comes into its own is in outdoor power equipment. Tricky carburettors, fuel mixing and difficult maintenance were always just something to put up with when you wanted to cut outdoor chores down to size, but that’s no longer a necessity. Battery power now drives brush cutters, hedge trimmers, drills and saws, even mowers. In fact, ride-on mowers powered by electricity can be a revelation. Quieter, faster, smoother, and without wiles of endlessly tangling, tensioner-twisting belts. The thing is, not all electric mowers are created equal. The core of their power is the issue, because battery technology is widely varied. Buying the right one from the start helps to avoid disappointment, downtime and stress. Some of this comes down to the matter of heat. It takes top-flight engineering to keep a modern battery cool; think about your mobile phone. The Toyota RAV4 has won a second consecutive people’s choice award and backed up this accolade with a top performance in new vehicle sales, making it the most popular new car in the nation for 2025. “We are incredibly humbled by the trust New Zealanders continue to place in Toyota, and especially in the RAV4,” said Toyota New Zealand CEO Tatsuya Ishikawa. “To see it voted people’s choice again and chosen more than any other new vehicle in 2025 is something our entire team is deeply grateful for. Kiwis choose the RAV4 for their families, their work and their adventures. We remain committed to earning that trust every day.” The latest iteration of Toyota’s midsized SUV has been on forecourts since 2019, and since then, 50,000 have found homes in Kiwi garages and driveways. That’s impressive in a very packed sector, facing pressure from an onslaught of EVs utilising a similar body type and footprint. It’s even more impressive to take the crown of best-seller from the marketdominating utes, which have tussled for the gold medal for more than a decade. That’s not just here, either. In an act of epochal dethroning, the RAV4 knocked the Ford F-150 off the US top seller’s spot. This, to put it in Kiwi perspective, is like sumo replacing rugby as our national sport. A total of 11,295 RAV4s rolled out in 2025, helping bust another record.

By 2020 the mid-sized Toyota had already exceeded 10 million units manufactured, and now it’s recognised as the best-selling SUV of all time. Which begs the question: why? People have taken to the current RAV4 like they did to the VW Beetle, the Mini and the Escort in their respective eras. It just fits the zeitgeist of modern times, it seems. The right size, the right amount of space, the right kind of distinctive but not madcap styling, the right blend of economy and smooth power delivery; it’s not here to set Nurburgring lap times or tow ocean liners, but it’s espresso in the morning. It’s that rare thing in the age of adult fads like the Labubu; popular because it’s good. I’m a contrarian. Tilly A six and a half year old female chihuahua cross, Tilly can be quite shy and requires someone with patience and time to make her feel secure. Good with dogs and confident cats. Her vet check found a slight heart murmur, which is not considered a medical issue. If you are interested in adopting Stella, Minnie or Tilly, please complete our Expression of Interest – Dog Adoption form on our website or pick one up at our council offices. Before you adopt a dog from us, we will make sure that you’re a good match for each other, that your property is suitable, and that a background check confirms you are a responsible dog owner.
