IT'S COOKING The main dining room at Porto Vivo. By JOANNE STARKEY Published: October 30, 2009

PORTO VIVO — lively port in Italian — lives up to half its name. It is about a mile from Huntington Harbor, but it is definitely lively. Ever since Serena Williams was spotted dining there shortly after its opening in August, celebrities and regular folks alike have flocked to the restaurant, turning it into Huntington’s latest hot spot. It doesn’t hurt that Steven Lecchi, the executive chef, used to be the chef for Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony.

The building that houses the restaurant has good bones: brick walls and floor-to-ceiling windows. In the middle of the main dining room are four leather booths with their backs to one another. Rising from the center of the foursome is a massive arrangement of branches, palm fronds and exotic blooms.

level is another dining room, with a gas fire, that is a bit quieter than the downstairs room.

The menu is a mix of largely Italian comfort food and innovative fare, along with a roster of certified Angus steaks. Mr. Lecchi, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, worked at Lespinasse and Christer’s in Manhattan, was executive chef at Basilico in Southampton and spent six years cooking at various Northern Italian restaurants.

The best dish we tried was the appetizer of grilled Spanish octopus. The shards of snowy white, fork-tender seafood were tossed in a salad of frisée, onion, capers and chopped tomatoes. Vying for top honors was an opener of polenta, creamy with fontina cheese and laced with strips of portobello mushrooms. A salad of tomato and mozzarella opened our eyes to the potential of this usually boring offering. The tomatoes were wedges of deep red heirlooms alternating with fresh mozzarella, made daily in the restaurant.

Skate, one of my favorite entrees, is one of the choices on the three-course prix fixe meal ($25) offered on Mondays. The flesh of the sautéed fish, as flaky and white as cod, sat atop a very fresh-tasting sauce of grape tomatoes, capers and pancetta and was accompanied by airy spinach gnocchi. A moist braised chicken paired with three superlight veal meatballs was another good choice from that menu. We were less impressed with the bucatini (fat spaghetti) in an amatriciana sauce of tomatoes, prosciutto and pancetta. It didn’t pack the flavor punch this dish usually delivers. Better selections were the grilled branzino under a lemon-sparked arugula salad, a special of tender osso buco with creamy risotto Milanese, and a beautifully marinated rib-eye steak ($29) with a chimichurri sauce on the side. Unlike most entrees, steaks here are not served with vegetables, but an à la carte selection of roasted brussels sprouts with pancetta, onions and apple ($7) was a splendid accompaniment. It’s possible to pay as much as $44 for an entree here (strip steak), but diners don’t have to be that extravagant. There are pasta entrees as low as $14. Many meat and fish dishes are also reasonably priced: chicken dishes $17 to $19, wild salmon $21, and veal Milanese $21.

Desserts are impressive. We loved the zeppole with creamy orange-scented ricotta centers, which arrived with a strawberry dipping sauce. Also worthy were the creamy tiramisù topped with chocolate shavings; a plate of assorted tangy sorbets and sabayonglazed fruits; and the cheesecake garnished with figs in port wine sauce. The restaurant’s signature dessert is a very good chocolate soufflé, which takes 15 to 20 minutes to prepare. It would have been nice if someone had mentioned the dessert early in the evening so that we didn’t have to wait. Service was friendly but slow on both visits; the staff was also lax about refilling water glasses. Porto Vivo is well on its way to a rating of excellent. Tightening the service would take it there. (631) 385-8486 porto-vivo.com VERY GOOD THE SCENE Striking multistory space. The dining room on the first floor is where the action is; the one on the third floor is much quieter. Wheelchair access. THE CROWD Spirited couples and small groups; few children. Servers are affable. THE BAR A separate room of the restaurant, on its own level, with high tables, a lovely circular bar and leather chairs and couch. Voluminous wine list with selections as high as $850, but there is also a list of 17 bottles under $30, plus a dozen by the glass ($9 to $14). THE BILL Sunday brunch entrees, $13 to $44. Dinner entrees, $14 to $44. Threecourse prix fixe on Mondays, $25. American Express, Visa, MasterCard and Discover are accepted. WHAT WE LIKED Grilled octopus, polenta, mozzarella and tomatoes, sautĂŠed skate, braised chicken and veal meatballs, grilled branzino, rib-eye steak, osso buco, all desserts. IF YOU GO Sunday brunch, 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dinner: 5:30 to 11 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, till midnight Friday and Saturday. Reservations are a must (at least a week in advance for weekends). • Brody Jenner spent his actual 26th birthday – Aug. 21 – in the hospital, so on Tuesday the Hills star threw himself a belated celebration at brand-new L.A. club Mi-6. Jenner and his guests – including best pal Frankie Delgado and, briefly, stepsister Khloe Kardashian – took over an upstairs table, where the reality star bounced up and down to live performances by rapper Too $hort and Dirt Nasty (a.k.a. actor Simon Rex). Jenner was loving the musical attention, especially as the acts would call out his name during their songs, and also perked up when waitresses brought over vodka, champagne, sparklers and a cake while the entire club treated him to a "Happy Birthday" serenade.

As we go in and out of temperature-controlled rooms or the thermometer rises and falls during the day, we tend to be overdressed, causing moisture to be lost through perspiration. For winter wear, we often choose irritating fabrics like wool that can cause friction, more dryness, and accompanying itching and flaking. Or we may select materials (i.e., leather, nylon) that don’t allow the skin to breathe; this creates dampness that can trap bacteria against the skin which, over the long run, causes irritations. When dressing for winter, use non-irritating fabrics such as cotton, which doesn’t trap moisture on the skin’s surface and can be worn for warmth or coolness. Keep in mind, however, that cotton once wet, does not dry quickly. The best material for “wicking away” moisture from the skin is a synthetic material, like polyester or polypropylene. Also, it is best to dress in layers, so that you can add and remove clothing items to suit the changes in temperature. (Check out CozyWallet.com for more swank ways to save money) If you have the chance, try to stop by one of these great events this weekend:

Huntsville, Alabama – While we’re celebrating culture, we’re also celebrating history – most importantly, *Veterans, during the Veterans Day Parade. *The Veterans Day parade usually starts on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. porto vivo in huntington

November 2, 2009

Porto Vivo Restaurant in Huntington by Christine Gerani In the lively town of Huntington comes a new restaurant with all the right flavors. In only a few months Porto Vivo hails as the new hot spot in town. I was pleasantly surprised as soon as I walked into Porto Vivo of the restaurants size and warmth. This is a multi level room with a woodsy yet contemporary feel. Sexy yet cozy, Porto Vivo will capture the hearts of many diners around the island with its oversized booths, fireplace and immense wine cellar. The bar is on a level all its own with plenty of seating and a lounge area. The music is jazzy which helps give the restaurant a New York City vibe. The best part of the experience is the food. Celebrity Chef Steven Lecchi [Chef for Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony] cooks up bold flavors and delivers delicious art. Try the Colorado Rack of Lamb, it was perfectly cooked and the Rigatoni stuffed with braised lamb shank will melt in your mouth. Don’t forget it’s Long Island Restaurant Week! Great time to try this amazing restaurant! We chatted with Chef Steven about the restaurant, the menu and growing up cooking! Christine – Your mom is from Northern Italy, and you were born in Brooklyn, tell us about your early days in the kitchen with your family? Chef Steven – Our house revolved around the kitchen. My mother was always in the kitchen cooking. She ran hotels in Rimini before she met my father. My father went to St. Johns University and then from there he went to medical school in Bologna and that’s where he met my mother. His parents are also both from Italy. I’m a 100% Italian. Christine – Any brothers and sisters in the household?

Pages Chef Steven – I have two sisters and a brother. My family loved to entertain and make people happy. Our house was the party house. Everybody always came over for lunch, dinner. Christine – How old were you when you started cooking? Chef Steven – As soon as I was tall enough to crank the pasta machine I was rolling the pasta out! We used to make homemade tortellini, gnocchi and lasagna, everything from scratch. We had great holiday parties at the house. Christine – You probably had a full house when there was a party or holiday? Chef Steven – On a major big party my mom would do about 180. Christine – At home? You must have had some house! Chef Steven – Yup, it was nice.

November 2009 Christine – You’ve worked at some incredible restaurants including your mom’s restaurant Reba in Great Neck, M T WT F S S Lespinasse St. Regis Hotel, and Basilico in the Hamptons. What made you decide to actually become a Chef? 1 Chef Steven – I used to spend a lot of my summers in Italy. When we very young, my Mom ran seasonal hotels 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 in Milano, Marittima on the Adriatic Coast. Growing up I was in the kitchen with her and running around the 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 hotel. I just always had a love for the restaurant, I didn’t know if I wanted to be the Chef or the actual cook, which is a lot more difficult. I always had a great passion for it, just a love for it. Luckily I developed a palette 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 at a very young age. As I got more into it and more mature I just fell in love with it. It’s who I am. It’s what I 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 « Oct

Christine – What is your favorite dish on the menu? Chef Steven – The Osso Bucco is pretty amazing. The Roast Rack of Colorado Lamb is very nice and that’s with stuffed rigatoni with braised lamb shank. It also has a warm goat cheese fondue.

Christine – Chef if you can give us one piece of advice for the home cook about cooking pasta, what would that be?

Bonehead

Chef Steven – To definitely salt the water so it’s very salty, otherwise the pasta will have no flavor. Absolutely do not overcook it. The water must be boiling when you put it in. Do not rinse the pasta because then the sauce will not adhere to the pasta, plus you lose the color and the flavor.

Dr. James A. Lee (Jim)

Christine – When you’re not cooking what do you like to do? Chef Steven – I like to play with my son Christian and take him out for the day!

The Guide Ornella Trattoria: Where the Menu Begins at Home » LONG ISLAND

Porto Vivo: Set to Impress Italian in Huntington Porto Vivo, a new upscale rustic Italian inspired grill, has opened at the site of the former Gerard Street Antiques in Huntington. Owned by famed Long Island inventor and entrepreneur, Joy Mangano of the Home Shopping Network, and classically trained, Swiss restaurateur Philipp Seipelt, Porto Vivo is set to impress. Executive Chef Steven Lecchi spent many years cooking in some of Tuscany’s top restaurants and most recently was the private chef to Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. He has created an imaginative menu along with consulting chef John Doherty, born and raised on Long Island, and who for the last 23 years was the executive chef at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The design of the space emphasizes the history and the character of the building, while offering a contemporary rustic ambiance. The dining room on the main floor offers a grand entrance with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and marble tile. The open dining room is accented by authentic brick, dark hardwood floors, exposed duct work and original ceiling beams, and distressed brown leather booths in the center of the room. Rustic wrought-iron light fixtures add to the stylish and lively atmosphere in the main floor dining room. The bar and lounge area on the second floor offers a black marble circular bar, high bar tables and a blue stone patio just outside the bar area. The third floor dining room has carpeted floors, rustic booths, a modern gas fireplace and onyx wood table tops. A catwalk between the two upper dining areas offers an open view to the lower dining room. The atmosphere is complete with an exclusive music list piped throughout the space and there will be occasional appearances from world-renowned musicians on the corner stage in the bar and lounge area. Lecchi and Doherty have created a rustic Italian menu with emphasis on quality and freshness. The sharing style antipasti selection, ranging in price from $9 to $18, includes highlights such as crispy fried artichoke hearts; oven roasted plum tomatoes Parmesan frico; eggplant caponata, crescentina fritta; grilled Spanish octopus with fried capers, onions and red wine vinegar; and several perfectly aged meats such as sopressata, salumi and prosciutto de parma. Savory appetizers include: seared scallops with tomato marmalade over saffron potato $15; seared carpaccio of Wagyu beef with arugula, salsa verde and shaved Parmesan $11; roasted beets, ricotta salada and pistachio oil $7.50; and Caesar salad, made tableside $9. A selection of signature flatbread pizzas will feature inventive creations including Bianca with Alfredo sauce, onion and Parmesan $13; Primavera with eggplant, artichoke and goat cheese $15 and prosciutto, arugula and Parmesan $15. Pastas are served in two sizes, half orders and full orders, and include: hand rolled gnocchi Bolognese $11/$16; braised short rib tortelloni $12/$17; and wild mushroom risotto with parsley coulis $12/$17. Entrees range from selections from the sea and land such as: slow roasted wild salmon with roasted fennel puree, salmon caviar $16; roast rack of lamb with braised lamb rigatoni with goat cheese fondue $26; grilled branzino with potato, lemon and arugula salad $16; and 12 oz. 28 day dry aged Certified Angus Prime Beef, $44. Porto Vivo has a dedication to quality beef and it is the only restaurant on Long Island to offer 28 day dry aged Certified Angus Prime Beef steaks. Some of the sweet endings on the dessert menu include: Joy’s creamy cheesecake with cherry conserve $7.50; strawberry’s flambé with black pepper, aged balsamic and vanilla ice cream $10; and Porto Vivo’s signature chocolate soufflé $10. The philosophy of the wine list was to hand select some of finest valued wines and offer them in accessible price ranges.

All wines are kept in the private wine cellar, which also doubles as a tasting room available for private wine tastings among the vintage selections. In the bar and lounge area, an imaginative cocktail menu is available with concoctions such as pineapple-basil daiquiri, Riviera sunrise, tomato basil martini, rhubarb Bellini; blueberry and ginger margarita; and the signature cocktail, the Porto Vivo sour, made with calvados and fresh house made apple juice.
